     In my area they buy and sell gold, copper and silver, which are the common components of most yellow gold alloys, and nickel, zinc, and palladium to produce white gold alloys.

      Get it appraised somewhere, but tell them it's not for insurance purposes (which is always a good deal higher) so you can get a better idea of its worth.

      I don't know of stores that buy outright, but be aware that they would not give you retail price.

      You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

      1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

      2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

      On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

      I agree with the person above. Jewelers, pawn shops, etc are all middlemen. They all take the gold to a refiner and sell it back for more than what they paid you for. I would go directly to the refiner. That's what I did with my chain and got a nice return. I took it to Cash4Gold. It seems to be the best one, you have to weigh the stuff and enter the carat and they give you the estimate online.       Yes, do not go to one of the places that pay you a portion of what ever gold is selling for via the stock market. The "Cash for Gold" places will scam you for as little as 30% of what the true price of gold is that day.

      Every city has one place in town that pays what ever the stock market (or very very close to what the stock market is that day) is at that day. So if you have an ounce of gold, and gold is at 1,100, they will give you 1,100. They then sell sell it to a guy who melts it down and makes it into rings, and triples the price and resales it at places like Kay Jewelers (huge scam btw).

      So what you need to do is call around to each place in town that buys gold and ask them how much they pay. Usually the best one is just called "Gold and Silver" and is not a pawn shop. A pawn shop will give you about 40-60% on gold. Make some calls. And do not look on Craigslist for a private buyer, they pay about 80% of the true price--all they do is run to the gold shop and make 20% off what you just sold.

      Forget it. You will lose big. Take it to three or more jewelry stores, or shops that advertise 'we buy gold and silver'. They need to make money and will pay less than 'spot market' price, but most of them are pretty fair with you. These online places are a joke.

      It all depends on what you have. If your jewelry is in nice shape and at least 14kt or 18kt gold, many estate jewelry buyers will express interest and pay a bit better.

      If the jewelry is damaged, or common pieces you still see in chain stores, you might as well sell it for gold weight...and in that case watch the gold markets for a nice gold spike because gold is paid on closing price.

      Also, look into some private jewelry stores. Sometimes they do consignment for a percentage and you could maximize your dollar out of that.

      My father buys so I'll give you some information idk where you live so wherever you go just know this. Gold is either 10 14 18 or 22 karat. The higher the number the higher the purity. For example 14 K is 58% PURE gold. Now when buying gold there is a spot price. Right now gold is kitco.com about 1542 dollars per ounce of PURE 24k gold. In an ounce there are 31.1 grams. So say you have a 14k ring that weighs 1 gram and it is 14k gold well 1542 (the spot price) divided by 31.1 ( to know how much it is per gram) is 49 dollars per gram. For PURE gold. So times .58 for 14k is about 26 dollars per gram. So if someone buys your ring for 16 bucks a gram there making 10 dollars per gram. I hope you dont get ripped off wherever you go. And oh btw
      10k is- 48%
      18 is 75%
      and 22 is 91%
