      It depends on what kind of gold you are talking about. Gold bars/coins, etc? To import such items wouldn't make any sense because you would buy them tax free in Dubai but would have to pay tax at US customs.

      Where you may make some profit is buying jewelleries procuced in "cheap labour countries" and then sellng them in the USA. But in this case it would make sense to buy the jewelleries in the producing countries direcly.
      Please note that gold in Dubai isn't any cheaper than anywhere else. It's just taxfree.

      Profit on gold (not jewelleries) is made when bought while the gold rate is cheap/low and sell it after the price/rate increased. Same system like shares/bonds/ fonds, etc. If you for example would have bought gold a couple years ago and sell it now, you would make some profit.

      You also may take into consideration when buying gold in Dubai, the seller in Dubai will take his piece of the cake already:)

      Well the price of gold is the price of gold regardless of where you are. But.......

      Jewelry in the Middle East is generally often better worked and more interesting than the standard jewelry in the west. Standard western jewelry is already marked up hugely. Say that 00 tennis bracelet is worth in reality 00, really. So imagine if you were to buy something here that was exceptionally done and obviously took a great deal of time to make. Imagine the markup.

      Over the years I have purchased jewelry in various Muslim countries including Dubai. Upon returning I get it appraised in order to add it to homeowner's insurance. A couple of times I have been offered double what I paid. And always you can tell that even the experienced jeweler get a gleam and an interest. And I have noticed that when my wife wears some of it people comment on where could I have possibly bought it. You get the point.

      Further, keep in mind that dealers are much more apt to haggle a bit on the price..... it is even expected. So yes I suppose on could make money if one had a good eye and a place to sell it where people would appreciate it.

This increases its intrinsic value but as the metal is very soft (lacking copper or bronze as the 21 carat kind does) the jewelry will very rapidly scratch beyond repair.

      There's hundreds of gold shop you can choose from. The best way to is to go at least five or six shop and bargain. The rule here is bargain! The jewelry assistant will normally ask, "what is your price?".As a tourist normally 10% less but believe me, they already mark up the price more or less 45%. Be confident and walk out if they are not satisfying, there's a lot other shops that wants your money.

      1. You can take a cab and visit the gold souq where you can bargain.
      2. You can shop in any jewelery shop at the Airport. No bargain there, but you can ask for a "special discount".

Only thing is the purity of gold which matters that too in case of ornaments. 22 c of Dubai will be 22c but of India only the seller knows. I was in Dubai for some time and found the difference my self. In case of genuine biscuit there may not be any difference in purity. However you may find some difficulty in custom clearance if you bring biscuit,because it attract duty and one can bring only specified quantity and above it one has to pay duty.

      Dubai Airport is not the best place to buy gold coins. If they are available they will be neither cheap nor good.
      You will also have to declare any gold coins you buy in Dubai to Indian customs on arrival and pay the applicable duty and the value of a real gold coin will exceed the duty free allowance.

      Gold prices are projected to keep going up. You're best to buy sooner rather than later to capitalize. I believe gold just recently hit 5 an ounce, and I read a future somewhere that gold could reach 00 before 2010.
      Gold is always a good investment because deposits are not infinite. 5% assets in gold would be a good start, but anything more than 20% and you should be consulting a financial advisor before making a move.

      Best 2 or 3 places I know of in Dubai are at the Gold Souk (Deira):

      I recommend Lakhoo +971 (4) 2266501, in one of the side streets of the covered mall of the Souq. Ask most of the shopkeepers where it is and they will direct you. Lakhoo have 2 stores next to each other, first one (the one I mainly frequent) is more a bulk dealer which sells larger quantities of metals (ie bars 1kg of silver & up, Ten Tola or approx 100g of Gold & up). They have low premiums & up to the minute pricing. Next door is a coin/jewelery dealer which deals in small quantities, but their premiums are higher.

      There is also Swiss Gold (cant vouch for them they have short opening hours) Anjali +971 (4) 2253487 (were all but out of stock of smaller coins last week) and another one near Anjali which I don't know the name of.

      There is a shortage of Silver & smaller denominations of Gold at the moment (you probably already know that if you're a metals bug), and it may be best to call ahead to save you the parking hassles at the Souk. It can take awhile to find parking day or night, so it may be better to take a taxi from Deira, but DON'T do that near closing time or you'll have trouble finding a cab back again. Lakhoo also don't open until around 5pm on Fridays, but every other day they seem to be open from the morning until 9pm sharp.

      71131921 Gold rope necklaces and neck chains.

      Which as a MFN (Most Favored Nation Rate) of 5%, which should be the rate for Saudi Arabia. This means your duty will be 5% over the value you paid for the item.

      Say it costs 3000 USD X 5% Duty = 150 USD duty total.

      However, if you are importing it as a tourist and will only be using the item for personal use, not re-selling it, there may be a ruling which allows you to import it with minimum duty.

      Consult a US Customs Broker (See Reference Below). They're apt to charge maybe 30 USD for the consultation, if at all. They'll tell you the ruling number and how much to pay.

      Also, you can just arrive at the US Airport and declare to the Customs Official this item for them to assist you immediately for you to pay your duties and taxes applicable. Do declare in any case, though.

      Gold sells for approximately ,700US/Kilo. They are apt to think you are a terrorist.

      Are their duty free shops in the Dubai airport? As you have surmised, there will be import duty when you reach India, hopefully somebody will tell you how much.

      By the time you do currency conversions, import/export duties, taxes, etc, I suspect you will actually lose money.

      i don't think gold is any "cheaper" here or there. gold is gold. there's the New York price, the London price, the Zürich price, and maybe a few other markets, and they are all priced in US Dollars. the prices of these different markets do not vary much from one to another. you will pay pretty much the same US Dollar price wherever you are translated into whatever non-US currency you happen to be using at the moment (plus dealer's markup, commissions, etc.).

      You will have to make the exact calculation by yourself as it depends on the gold price on the world market, the NZ $ exchange rate and the quality you are looking for.

      The gold price in Dubai is floating, and is in line with the world market price. Once you enter the Gold Souq in Deira you will see the current rate per ounce displayed in US $ on the main entrance near the Deira bus station. I cannot recommend to you to buy gold when you are in a hurry, or in an airport shop. Remember that you will hardly get a real bargain especially at the airport as the whole country has no sales tax!

      Never buy at the first 3 to 4 shops you see. Compare the quality (which is pretty good) of your merchandise, then start bargaining. If you pay more than today's world market price, they made great business with you... so bargain harder. Especially in a period where the price is rising, they have bought their gold for less which opens up further terrain for bargaining. For a plain gold chain I pay around 10 to 20% less per ounce than market rate. Only gold which has been worked on a lot (such as great colliers etc.) will be more expensive than the market rate.

      You might also mention to the salesperson you had been to Saudi Arabia where gold usually is not more expensive than the world market price even if a lot of work was needed.

      Go to the gold souq and start bargaining. Everything is subject to negotiation. The shop keeper knows his business and will read you. Act desperate and he will take you for more than it's worth. Act like you don't care and know what you are doing and you will get a good deal.
