Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

Gold N Silver

Hallmarking is necessary because when jewellery is manufactured, precious metals are not used in their pure form, as they are unworkable. Gold, Silver, and Platinum are always alloyed with copper or other metals to create an alloy that is more suitable to the requirements of the jeweller. Such an alloy needs to be strong, workable and attractive.

Due to the high value of gold, platinum and silver, there are significant profits to be gained by reducing the precious metal content of an alloy at the manufacturing stage. Even an expert cannot determine the quality or standard of precious metal items by eye or touch alone. Base metal articles plated with a thin coat of gold or silver are indistinguishable from the same articles made wholly of precious metal until subjected to expert testing.

With volume manufacturing, enormous profits can be made from undercarating. Without compulsory independent testing there is huge potential for deception and fraud.

The UK Hallmarking system has offered valuable protection for over 700 years. Compulsory Hallmarking protects all parties; the public who receive a guarantee of quality, the manufacturer who is given quality control and protection from dishonest competitors at a very low cost and the retailer who avoids the near impossible task of checking standards on all his goods.

Brief History of UK Hallmarks
Hallmarking is the world's first known instance of consumer protection law, in the UK it dates back to about 1300 AD.

Millennium Mark Used

A typical set of antique British silver hallmarks showing; Standard Mark, City Mark, Date Letter, Duty Mark and Maker's Mark.

The Standard mark indicates the purity of the silver.
A - Sterling .925
B - Britannia .958, used exclusively 1697 - 1720, optional afterwards.
C - Sterling .925 for Glasgow
D - Sterling .925 for Edinburgh
E - Sterling .925 for Dublin

The date letter system was introduced in London in 1478 (elsewhere as the hallmarking system evolved). Its purpose was to establish when a piece was presented for assay or testing of the silver content. The mark letter changed annually in May, the cycles of date letters were usually in strings of 20 and each cycle was differentiated by a changing of the font, letter case and shield shape.

In 1784 the duty mark was created to show that a tax on the item had been paid to the crown. The mark used was a profile portrait of the current reigning monarch's head. The use of this mark was abolished in 1890.

The enforced use of the maker's mark was instituted in London in 1363. Its purpose was to prevent the forgery of leopard's head marks upon silver of debased content. Originally, makers' marks were pictograms, but by the beginning of the 17th Century it had become common practice to use the maker's initials.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Question about Pokemon soul silver n heart gold also regarding the action replay?
So i was wondering if the action replay will work on the pokemon game soul silver n heart gold(ss n hg) Cuz i wanna get the modifier code for it so i can get which ever 6 pokemon i want like how i did in diamond. I just want to know if it gonna be possible?

    • ANSWER:
The Action Replay should work for both of them, and I'm not sure if there's Action Replay codes for them yet, but you can bet that shortly after the official release of those games, that they will start creating codes for the Action Replay.

  2. QUESTION:
does artificial gold n silver jewellery with coloured gems n stones etc look odd on girls who aint teenagers?

    • ANSWER:
      no everyone can wear them!

      hope it helps

  3. QUESTION:
Can u wear gold n silver accessories at the same time?

    • ANSWER:

  4. QUESTION:
what i gonna be the elite Pokemon game off of soul silver and heart gold?
Every paired Pokemon game has a corresponding "elite" version like Pearl n diamond have platinum n the origional gold n silver had crystal and saphire n Ruby have emerald so what's gonna be the elite version on soul silver and heart gold

    • ANSWER:
There is going to be none. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen didn't have none since they were remakes whos original version had an elite version (Blue in Japan, Yellow everywhere else) and it's highly likely Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver won't have an 'elite' version either especially since the story is somewhat parallel to that of Pokemon Crystal, an elite version already released.

  5. QUESTION:
Gold n' Silver Earrings.... and cheap... help?
okay.... i just got my ears pierced and earrings on thursday..... it's gold (i noe that you need gold earrings when you first get your ears pierced)... and i was just wondering how long do i have to keep that gold earring in till i take it off and switch to silver or cheap earrings..... cause my friend got his piercing a long time ago and he took off the gold earring right away and put on cheap n' silver ones with diamonds..... n' idk if thats gonna work for me... and i don't want it to get infected...help plz???

    • ANSWER:
      Hi

You need to keep a piercing in for 4-6 weeks while it heals.

The reason for this is that when they pierce your ear they use a slightly thicker ear stud so that it makes a decent sized hole to put other earrings into etc.

If you take it out earlier. Firstly it will be really hard to get the earring back in coz it will start to close the moment you take it out - it can be really tricky and painful getting it back in and another reason is because you are more prone to be getting a allergy to cheaper earrings while your piercing is healing.

You are best to wait and change it after 4-6 weeks. Your piercer should have told you how long to keep it in for.

I know you wanna put in your own earring but its best to wait.... it will go quick.

    • ANSWER:
It's like any other pokemon game. It's a remake of the older generation. Recycled pokemon, with a old story that may have minor differences, revamped graphics, and is a pretty basic pokemon game. Personally I wouldn't buy it, but if you like pokemon go ahead and buy it. As far as team building, that's up to you. If you want advice go to a forum on a game site to get helpful answers and not from the people on here.

heres a link to the site if ya need some proof =P

    http://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/starters.shtml

    • ANSWER:
Just get your favourites. you can trade for the others later, and you'll have more fun playing with the Pokemon you like (:

as for me, the Johto starters are my favourite so choosing one from them three is going to be hard. I'll probably go for Cyndaquil or Totodile, and maybe ask my friends for an egg of the others later.

For the Hoenn starters, I'm definitely going to get Mudkip. The Hoenn starters were my least favourite, and I only like Mudkip, not to mention Swampert is a great Pokemon for competitive play.

For the Kanto starters I'm also going to have a hard time choosing, because I love them all! I'll probably go with Charmander though, as he was my first ever starter when I played Pokemon Red

      Hope I Helped! (:

  19. QUESTION:
a 925 silver necklace n a white gold plated necklace which is more exp n lasting? wats the difference?

    • ANSWER:
A .925 silver necklace is made of sterling silver--92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy to strengthen the silver.

A white gold-plated necklaces is an incredibly thin layer of white gold that has been plated onto a base metal. The FTC (who regulates the jewelry industry in the U.S.) defines gold-plating as a transitory, temporary finish on a piece of jewelry. Normal wear will erode the gold plating exposing the base metal underneath.

All other things being equal, the .925 silver necklace would be worth more than the white-gold plated necklace.

  23. QUESTION:
1892 mexican coin, out band I assume is silver and a Gold or ? inset in the center. It says " N " on 1 side.?
backside looks to be a Hawk with a snake in the mouth along with other images on the inset. Many other images around the outer silver band. Next to the " N " on the inset is a very small " O " on top of a " M ". Any feed back would greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
The N is a dead giveaway that the coin is dated 1992 not 1892. They did not use that back then. The N stands for new peso. The coin has an eagle with a snake in it's mouth, that means as much to the Mexican people as Liberty and the eagle on U.S. coins. There is 13.3 pesos to the dollar so it is not worth much. They can be found in a coin dealers world coin box for around .25 cents. The coin is bimetallic so it is collectible by those collectors that collect that type. It is made of an outer ring of stainless steel and an inner ring of aluminum-bronze. Silver outer color and a gold inner color.

  24. QUESTION:
I don't understand Zakat at all? What's with the silver? Why can't you use cash? Totally stuck on calculating.
Reaching Nisab (Minimum Amount Liable to Zakah...DON'T GET THIS)

The method of estimating the Nisab (minimum amount liable to Zakah) is applicable to cash money, gold, silver, commercial commodities and cattle (WHAT THE HELL?) According to a prophetic hadith, "Gold is not liable to Zakah unless it reaches twenty dinars. Once it reaches this amount, half a dinar must be paid as Zakah on it(WHAT'S A DINAR?). Likewise, silver is not counted for Zakah unless it reaches two hundred dirhams (SO IF U DONATE WIV GOLD ITS £20 BUT SILVER IS £200? OKAAAY WHY?). Once it reaches this value, an amount of five dirhams must be paid as Zakah on it. (OK SO U ADD SOME DIRHAMS TO £200, HOW MUCH IS IT THEN? WOT R DIRHAMS?)
Based on this hadith the Nisab of gold counted for Zakah is twenty dinars (85 grams) of fine gold, while the Nisab of silver is two hundred dirhams (595 grams) of fine silver(K THIS WHOLE GOLD N SILVER IS RANDOM)
he Nisab of merchandise is amount whose value = 85 grams of gold (HOW?
Basically, I need some explaining on it. I don't do maths and can't calculate. What's 2.5 % of income...so if I'm unemployed and still at home with parents, then I don't do Zakat? Only do it when I'm employed and get income and have my own house n that? Well, anyway I don't understand Zakat whenever it's described to me. Most words I don't understand. I'm 6 years old (joke...)

  26. QUESTION:
What would be its apparent weight if it were made of (a) pure gold and (b) 75% gold and 25% silver, by volume?
7.Archimedes purportedly used his principle to verify that the king’s crown was pure gold by weighing the crown while it was submerged in water. Suppose the crown’s actual weight was 25.0 N. What would be its apparent weight if it were made of (a) pure gold and (b) 75% gold and 25% silver, by volume?

    • ANSWER:
I get (without taking into account sig figs)
      2.5484kg pure gold
      and
      2.2575kg 75% gold, 25% silver

To convert Newtons to grams, you need to take out the acceleration portion of the newton. That is 9.81m/s^2. So divide 25N by 9.81 and that gives you the kilogram weight of the crown made of pure gold. Multiply that by 1000 to get the gram weight. (I got 2,584.4g)
Next, you convert the weight of the crown into the volume of the crown. To do this, first find the density of gold (19.3g/cm^3) and divide the gram weight by 19.3. This gives you the volume of the crown in cm^3. (I got 33.01cm^3) Divide that number by 4 to give you 25% of the volume. Multiply that by the density of gold (19.3) and then multiply that answer by 3 to give you the weight of the gold. (I got 1,911.27g)
Then, take the 33.01 times the density of silver (10.49g/cm^3) and that will give you the weight of the silver in the crown. (I got 346.27g)
Add the two up, and that gives you the gram weight of the crown (2257.54g), divide by 1000 to get the kg weight.
To reconvert to Newtons, multiply the answers by 9.81.

  30. QUESTION:
Should I choose White, Gold or Silver as the color for my new car?
I'm having a HARD time deciding on the color for my new car-Toyota Highlander 2007. My current car (Toyota Celica 85) is metallic beige & after 20+ yrs, still looks awesome-color hasn't faded much & still has its shine, doesn't look easily dirty so I don't have to wash it all the time, and has worn really well.

Originally, I was set on Gold thinking it'll last as well as my current car's paint did since I'll prob have it w/ me for the next 20+yrs, but my sister brought "white" to my attention and now I'm even considering silver & white as my other 2 options.

So, I need to decide on White, Gold, or Silver. The white looked really nice/classy. Silver seems boring. The gold looked good also, but not in all lights. Bottomline, I want the color choice to wear well after 20+yrs, not have to be washed frequently if possible, and also not be ez thief target. It will be parked in garage @ home/work and I live in N.Ca South Bay. Run errands alot, no snow areas, & weekend travel.

Mercury has changed gold to silver.. :O :O?
my gold ring got contact with mercury n was changed to silver colour. Is der any way to turn it back to gold colour??? Plzz help me..:(

    • ANSWER:
Your best bet is to take it to a jeweller who knows what s/he is doing. You might heat the ring too much and melt it. In any case, the mercury vapours are toxic so leave it to someone who can do it properly.

The mercury in your ring is still mercury and the gold is still gold. They have formed an amalgam where they have physically combined but have not chemically combined.

  33. QUESTION:
    How do you melt,old Jewelry?
The reason for this Question is=I have all these old stuff like=necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches, pendants, nick nats Jewelry.I saw on t.v. they buying gold n silver, then they are melting it.I just taught maybe I can do it somehow.Melting all this jewelry.

    • ANSWER:
It takes special (and expensive) equipment to melt down jewelry... not to mention quite a lot of training, and a facility that can safely handle it. It's not something you can do at home. The average household oven doesn't even come close to getting hot enough to do if (if it did, you wouldn't be able to bake anything... all your pans would melt). You would first need to build a smelting furnace to even get started.

In addition, they usually attempt to extract impurities in the metal before casting it, and it's unlikely you could get access privately to the chemicals required to do so.

  36. QUESTION:
Do girls like guys who wear silver, or gold?
Howdy everybody, i'm 17yr old male, and i like wearing jewelry (chain, ring, bling watch, etc) I come down from a family of jewellers n they supply me with gold. I wear the Mr T/Tupac/50 cent type jewelry. Lately i've been thinking that i'm being a try hard, even tho im not. Do girls like guys who wear jewelry? Eg, iced out watch. if so, gold or silver.
Yeah, i'm about 70%Fijian, 30% Indian, so I look kinda Ni**a like, but only marginally. My skin goes well with gold.

Just to save me points 4 asking another ?, how about glasses, do girls mind guys wearing glasses. I wear contacts but the other day I bought a gold lamborghini specs, they look wicked, but do girls like glasses, or a normal face?

    • ANSWER:
I hate over-the-top bling, because I think it looks chavvy; so I go for understated jewellery. OTT bling puts me off someone, but in regards to the metals they wear, I have no preference.

What I hate though, is when people wear the colour that doesn't suit them. For example, my fiance is Mediterranean, so his skin looks really good against gold. I on the other hand am British, so paler than he is, and my skin looks washed out against gold, so I wear white gold or silver. I think wearing the wrong colour metal can make you look awful.

But I also think that the big gold blingy necklaces, like you find in many European cities (esp where my fiance is from), would only look good in gold. If they're silver then they look tacky, in my opinion. But I hate them full stop, so wouldn't go for them in any case

  37. QUESTION:
132 pupils went for a competition. 3/4 of the boys n 1/2 of the girls won gold medals.?
The rest of the pupils won silver medals. There was an equal no. of boys n girls who won silver medals.
    a) How many boys won Gold medals?
    b) How many more boys than girls were there?

    • ANSWER:
Since there was an equal number of boys and girls who won silver medals,
      1 - 3/4 = 1/4 boys
      1 - 1/2 = 1/2 girls are equal
In other words it can be said that the number of girls = Half the number of boys
The ratio of boys to girls = 2:1
      So the number of boys = 132 * 2/3 = 88
      and the number of girls = 132*1/3 = 44
      Number of boys who won the gold medals = 88 * 3/4 = 66
      Number of girls who won the gold medals = 44 * 1/2 = 22
      Number of girls who won the silver medals = 44 - 22 = 22
      Number of girls who won the silver medals = 88 - 66 = 22
      Number of boys more than the girls = 88 - 44 = 44

  41. QUESTION:
    Gold and Silver????????
I recently found my Grandads old wedding ring and necklace n decided i wanted to wear them!

The rings far too big for me so i hung it on the necklace! The ring is Gold and the necklace is Silver.

I was just wondering if they would do any damage to each other? Being different elements (hope that's right?) will they react with each other after some time n get messed up? cos i really don't want that to happen!

    • ANSWER:
No. The silver is harder than the gold, and could ding it, but there will be no chemical reaction between the two. The silver could tarnish, but in most cases will do so on a necklace only very slightly. The gold is extremely stable and non-reactive. Also, it is not 24-carat, probably, so it has already been alloyed, mostly with silver.

  42. QUESTION:
Can i wear gold and silver together? Im 18m...?
im an eighteen year old boy n i got an expensive watch that i dont want to change to another one and its silver colored

but i also have a gold school grad ring

and i wear a silver chain/cross round my neck

i was wondering if it would look odd on a guy like me to wear both gold and silver

and wondering if i should bother getting gold jewelry from now on or just stick to silver

    • ANSWER:
I'd say not to wear them together because it looks odd, but you're a guy so I doubt as many people would look at your jewelry compared to a girls. Plus, your chain is probably covered by your shirt unless you're wearing tank tops al day, every day, which Im guessing you don't. I think silver looks better with lighter skin tones and gold better with a tan complexion, so that's how I'd determine what color to stick too, but its good to have a mix depending on what mood youre in. And it IS your life, so you should just wear what you want if its important to you

  44. QUESTION:
gold or silver necklace for 17 year old guy?
I was given a gold necklace for Christmas, but i'm not sure what is "in". My parents said I could trade it in for a silver.

What is "in" for teen guys?

this is the one I got in 14k gold, and gold color: http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?GrpTyp=STY&ItemID=1505ab5&DeptID=70737&CatID=70867&SO=0&SelDim=4~+18~&x5view=1&Ne=4+5+18+964+578+904&shopperType=G&N=4294953101+4294966637+518&Nao=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=70737|70867

    • ANSWER:
i wouldnt say that theres and "in" color or metal for guys right now.

It really depends on their preference. i like both gold and silver and feel that i look good in both but in this case id take the silver color over the gold though.

so in short: go with the silver one this time but either looks good.
