Gold Prices Per Gram

These are the most frequently asked questions we receive at GoldFellow. It's problematic for everyone as it doesn't relate to any measurement we currently use in our daily life. Pennyweights, however are still commonly used in the U.S. jewelry industry but we prefer to use the more accurate and globally recognized Grams (metric) as our unit of measure.

There are 20 pennyweights also referred to as DWT in an ounce. There are also 31.1 grams in an ounce. As we are talking about precious metals I'll use gold in my example throughout this post.

Many of our customers are weighing their valuables on home kitchen or postal scales of either mechanical or digital make. Most measure in grams and ounces, particularly when weighing food. The grams shown on your scale are not the same as the grams used in gold! You are measuring on a device that uses 28 grams per ounce while gold is measured in troy ounces. There are 31.1 grams per Troy ounce. The simplest way to use your home scale is to multiply the number showing as ounces by 20. That's it. If your scale shows 3.5 oz you have approximately 70 pennyweight. 1.5oz is about 30 pennyweight and so on. (Same for silver and platinum)

Ok, now for measuring your gold in grams. The scale shows 3.5 ounces. Multiply by 31.1 and it comes to 108.85 grams of gold. If it's 1.5 oz x 31.1=46.65 grams.

Lastly, if you would like to know a price per gram, follow this formula. per pennyweight is.86 per gram. To convert simply divide by 1.555=.86. Try dwt divided by 1.555 and you get .58 gram.

      It is impossible to give one answer for the price of white gold.

      White gold is a mixture of gold with either nickel, palladium or platinum. In addtion the mixtures or amounts of these metals to the gold can vary. If platinum is mixed with the gold the price is higher than pure gold. Nickel and palladium result in less expensive mixtures.

      On a per carat basis white gold is almost always more expensive than "yellow" gold. Yellow gold in jewelery is usually gold mixed with copper and or zinc.

      The international standard unit for precious metals trade is troy ounces, a rather obscure unit.

      White gold and yellow gold are imprecise trade names for gold alloyed with other metals. You'd have to know the type and quantity of the "impurities" before determining the price of those alloys.

      The price of diamonds is dependent on the 4 C's, and is controlled by the DeBeers monopoly, so the price of diamonds is not affected by this recession. Surprisingly, the price of precious metals has softened...so far anyway.

      Usually the price of gold is measured per troy ounce. This is the price that is listed in major media sources. Right now the price of gold is US0.31/tr. oz. If you would like to figure out how many troy ounces there are in a gram, simply go to Google and type in "1 troy ounce in grams." Now take the 0.31 and divide it by that number. That should get you the price of gold per gram.

      Gold is essentially a hedge against inflation because when people fear that the value of the US dollar is falling (as it has been steadily for a while now) compared to other currencies, it is wise to hold gold, which, historically, holds its value extemely well. If left to our own devices, the economy would tend naturally to a gold standard, but actions by the US government such as the seizing of gold holdings and the powers instilled to the Federal Reserve keep this from happening.       a gram for 14k is pretty damn good. I know in vegas right now alot of places are offering between and a gram for 14k. If you wanna know what the total worth per gram is you just have to do some basic math.

      Goto monex.com and look at live prices, as I write this now its at ,113 per ounce. Now to figure out the per gram price we have to take 1113 / 31.103 X the purity of gold(31.103 is a troy ounce, which is whats used in gold trading), which in this case is 14k so the purity is .585 which comes out to .93. Now may seem cheap when compared to but they must make some money also.

      If your dealing with a pawn shop then they will resell the gold to a company that melts it down. They get anywhere between 90% and 98% of the .93(or whatever the price is that day) from the melt down company.

      If you wanna do the math on your 18k pieces then the purity is .750 instead of the .585 of 14k.

      You need to take in account that most gold is alloyed 10Kt is only 41.667% gold and 14Kt in 58.333%.

      Allso you will not get that rate. If you have Kt gold to sell you will only get 50% - 95% of the gold value. It depends on were you go. A pawnshop being the least and a secondary refiner being the most, and the better rate the more have to sell.
