     You're definitely taking the correct approach by doing some research and being skeptical. The run up in gold prices has brought the scammers out of the woodwork. It's a bad economy all over and investment scams are duping people more than ever, since more people (and scammers) are looking for opportunities and a way to make money. Gold prices have got the most attention after hitting record highs, both by investors and criminals conducting fraud. I'm not sure where in Africa you're looking, but Africa and China are both very high risk markets. South Africa and Ghana are the largest producers in Africa, and China is actually the largest gold producer in the world now since it overtook South Africa in 2007. West Africa seems to be where the action is for new investment. Bottom line is not to do business with anyone without having them verified first by a due diligence investigation or background check, or having a company recommended to you by a trusted business partner, etc. There is too much fraud to go it alone. I think Wymoo International is your best bet if you want to verify companies in China or Africa, they offer due diligence and have field investigators in most countries. You want to be sure that any claimed company is registered with the government, licensed and has a proven track records of honest operations. Gold scams can be very complex, so don't be fooled by supporting documentation, photos or contracts. There have even been "companies" registered with the government to appear to be legit when in fact they don't exist - a lot of corruption. So, be skeptical and get some offers from some gold producers or miners or sellers, (don't give out any personal information or payment), get a background check or due diligence investigation to minimize your risk, then make an informed decision.

     The other post is correct; never send money via Western Union. Use your bank or escrow service and contacting the embassy or consulate is also a good idea to get started. But, the most important advice is to not engage in any business deal or transaction until the seller is verified.

     then this is not the field for you.
     Do your due diligence elsewhere before you get into a risky speculative field like gold.

     I've purchased gold for WoW several times without getting scammed, the most important part is going with a fairly reputable company. Since you can't exactly find reviews of these companies easily then the best way is by word of mouth.

     In the past I've used both IGE and DGameSky. If I was going to buy gold again I would probably go through IGE as they offer in-game transfer of the money by meeting your character somewhere and transferring the gold through the trade window. Some other companies use the mail system or auction house which can easily lead to you getting tracked and banned by Blizzard.

     Just try not to buy gold from one of the sites that always spams in game, they aren't ones I would trust.

    Lately there have been a lot of commercials, mostly on the cable news networks and talk radio, soliciting gold investments. Are these scams? Is there a better way to buy gold? As the value of gold has peaked, is it still a good investment?

      Some o the commercials are scams yes. In fact many that I have seen are like cash for gold and buy this coin for this price or that price. The only commercial Ive seen that is not a scam are the Monex commercials. Any commercial that is trying to sell you a product and they give you a price for that product, it is a scam.

      I am a gold and silver buyer. And I can tell you that 100% of all TV advertised coins are a scam. Commercials that push knowledge of information such as the Monex commericals those are not scams.

      Gold is not an investment. Making money on gold is NO reason to buy it. As to why you want to hold physical gold for long term the reason is simple. There is no counter party risk. Nobody will owe you anything. Gold in physical form is final payment and cant be debased. It is the "Currency of last resort" as Greenspan has stated many times through the years. Gold doesnt pay interest, dividends, doesnt restate earnings, has no lawyers, accountants, CEOs or CFOs lying to you on television. Gold doesnt ask for bailouts, doesnt go BK and cannot cook its books. Gold cant be debased or printed at the will of a company or governmetnt and holds its purchasing power.

      Gold sits there as a store of value, is labor intensive, and a one ounce coin will not split into a bunch of half ounce coins at the direction of the pin stripped bandits on Wall Street. Also Gold is the ONLY asset class in the last ten years to increase in value and retain every dollar of its purchasing power.

      It's not necessarily a scam, but more of a complete rip-off. I agree with some of the other contributors about the limited payout to you in order for the gold buyer to then sell for a considerable profit. I would not trust selling gold or jewelry online - it's always best to have it appraised and then sold at separate venues.

      If I understand you correctly you are trying to get back at a gold farmer that has hacked your friend, which method you are going for, I don't know. Trying to Whisper a gold spammer is about as useless as replying to a "Do not reply" Email. You can't send the farmer anything in the mail as the character they are spamming on rarely lasts more then 5 minutes before it gets deleted. NOW if your talking that you want to trick a gold farmer into giving you money, there is no way to do such. Gold farmers are usually played by bots that are being surpervised by the farmer itself. If you go to one of their sites, to even get them to talk to you, you must give them your pay pal # and agree that you are buying gold. Hope this helps.

      Well, I've played RuneScape for over 4 or 5 years, and quite honestly, there are no SAFE sites for you to go on. Jagex does a great job keeping cheaters out of the game, and it will continue. Any site that breaks rules like this, will be shut down, the only people who truly bot successfully are the people who create their own scripts.

      Chances are, if you go to a site people are listing, it's aimed at stealing your RS account, and you will probably be infected by viruses upon opening the link, for the love of your account, please don't go to the sites, and please, don't cheat. You will be banned, there will be no warning, and you will get upset. Play the game the right way, and if you truly need any assistance or anything, PM me on here first, then we can speak in-game, I'm very experienced.

      The Fox guys are revving up fears and getting people to buy gold which is driving prices up artificially, but eventually people will stop being afraid and stop buying the price will go down below what people paid for it.

      Those places don't give you nearly what your gold is worth.

      If the gold is worth 10 grand or more it would be risky to walk in the street alone. (I would ask a gold jewelry store that don't rip off people much and tells them you know someone that want to sell gold you tell the person you think how much it's worth. After that bring someone alone with you for safety/witnesses, stay there so the buyer would not steal or ripoff you.

      trust the government because if you don't you get deported. of course the central bank is trustworthy. pawnshops are regulated by the central banks and some of them do get into trouble.

      Through legitimate brokers. Look at it this way, if there was so much discounted gold on the open market then legitimate buyers would grab it immediately. So they either are not legit or if they are legit it is pointless to deal with these unregulated iffy people when you can buy gold for close to the same price from a trusted source.

      But do keep in mind that victims have already lost money to an internet stranger and will be leary of anyone asking for information. Add to that, the fact that the mods and admins of such sites will also be suspicious of someone popping in asking for victim's stories, you may need to give some some more information about who you are and what exactly you are doing. Some victims have also been a victim a second time around with a refund/reimbursement type scam.

      you're probably looking at the bid price, which is NOT the price that it will sell for. Its just what someone is bidding for it for now. Thats how ebay works, you can look at other items that are expensive but the seller will start it at 99 cents bidding, and put a reserve price that you dont see.

      That would be 0 per ounce. Assuming it's solid gold jewelry you're dealing with. Most jewelry is sold at 14 ct. or 18 ct. I'm not sure what a buyer of scrap gold is looking for...perhaps 24 ct (which is pure gold)? What I do know is that the higher the carat of the gold, the more pure gold is in it, so the higher the value. Check the links on your chains and the inside of the rings for the ct. content. That way you can know going into your sale what you should be getting for it.

      The 1st link below looks like a good website for everything gold (including the current price per ounce around the world). The 2nd link is specific to selling scrap gold, which relates to you. Do as much homework as you can beforehand. That way it's less likely anyone can take advantage of you. Good luck!

      P.S. I just perused that 2nd link and it has GREAT TIPS on selling your scrap gold. Read the whole thing. It could be the difference between making some good money for yourself or not being paid what your jewelry is worth.

      I'd say the wisest things you can do are:

      1) take photos of all the items you're selling
      2) catalog their gold content
      3) remove any gems/jewels from settings, as well as other metals (like silver), if possible
      4) weigh all the gold and document it
      5) take the items to a jeweler OTHER than the one you're going to sell it at, and get an estimate of what it all could be worth
      6) make copies for yourself of any paperwork you fill out

      It is close to 0 and you should report it to the FBI as an Internet Crime Complaint. Also you should be able to report it as a loss on your taxes good luck.

      It all comes down to the product. Real coffee is healthy...powdered coffee is NOT. Since the product is a scam, then so is the business, regardless of the model used.

      I haven't heard of it. If you're looking to invest in gold, the easiest way to do it is to buy shares of the Gold Streetrackers ETF (ticker symbol GLD) which you can buy via a brokerage account just like a stock.

      You won't get very much money from these types of companies. They will give you a very low value for your jewelry, and you don't get to negotiate. They just send you a check for what they want to pay you.

      You'd get more money by selling the jewelry yourself, or even by taking the jewelry to a pawn shop. Before you do anything, take the jewelry to a jewelry store and ask them if they would buy it.

      It's not a rip off, they will send you a check, but it won't be any more money than one of your local pawn shops, and probably a little less. Your best bet is to take it to 3 seperate buyers and see who offers you the most money. There was a difference on the same jewelry on the same day when I sold some extra I had.
