Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

Gold Scrap Value

Gold prices are currently high, making it an excellent time to sell your broken jewelry and other scrap gold. However, you might have a hard time knowing whether or not you're getting a fair price for your gold. Here's a short guide to finding out how much scrap gold is worth and getting a good deal.

Scrap value is the minimum value that gold should be sold for - the value of the gold itself. Before you sell your old jewelry or other gold items at this price, think about whether or not you could be getting a better price. After all, there are a number of factors that could bring the price up.

Good workmanship could get you a price that's less than retail, but higher than scrap. Likewise, something that's antique or bears a maker's mark may be worth more, as well as any piece with gems set into it. They all have value outside the transaction, and should be removed from any gold piece that is only worthwhile as scrap. Sell precious stones to another dealer.

Once you have determined that the piece has no other value than scrap, you'll need to know what karat it is. This ranges from eight karat to twenty-four karat, and will tell you what percentage is truly gold. Twenty-four karat gold is nearly pure, and eighteen karat is about seventy-five percent pure.

Eight karat gold is found mostly in Europe, and is too low in purity to be recognized as having much value in the US. This material is about a third gold, and sometimes may tarnish. Nine karat is thirty-seven and a half percent gold, and is found mostly in the UK. The minimum US standard is ten karat, at about forty-one percent gold. This material is chosen for its hard wearing qualities, as it's harder than pure gold.

Twelve karat gold is fifty percent pure. It's rarely seen these days, but may be found in old watch cases. Fourteen karat gold is fifty-eight percent pure, common in the US, and is also made in Asia for markets overseas and in Russia. Fifteen karat gold is sixty-two percent pure, and a discontinued standard from countries in the UK. Since no fifteen karat pieces have been made since the mid-1930s, this mark tells you the piece may have antique value.

Eighteen karat gold pieces make up the majority of quality pieces, and may also be marked 750 parts per thousand. You'll find twenty-two karat gold mostly in pieces from Asia and the Middle East. It's very yellow and soft. At the top of the list is twenty-four karat gold, the softest and purest available.

Once you know how pure your gold is, finding the weight is the next step. Gold and silver are measured in either troy ounces or in grams. Look up the daily spot price per ounce (you can find it online), then divide that number by the percentage of purity of your gold. This will tell you the price you can expect to get for your scrap gold.

  2. QUESTION:
    Where in canada can I get above 97% of scrap value for gold?
    I have a place here in Maryland that gives me 96% of the goldspot price on my scrap gold. In canada, gold goes for more an ounce. Im looking to maybe ship some out and get a little bit more for it. Does anyone know of a gold liquidator in canada??

    • ANSWER:
      First, it is a very rare business that pays better than that. Paying more means giving up their profit margin. In general, only private individuals pay better than that. My own business pays slightly better, but only for coins - I am not buying scrap gold right now, and if I was, I would be paying less.
      Second, while you do get more dollars for your gold in Canada, they are Canadian dollars. Spot gold is presently US20, which equals CAN95. Canadian dollars are worth slightly less than US dollars, and you will lose a little bit converting then to US dollars.

  5. QUESTION:
    What are today's value for gold or scrap?if I went to a goldbuyer, how much should I at least get for per gram?
    I want to turn in my old gold and don't want to get ripped off. The last thing I'll do is send it in the mail!

    • ANSWER:
      There was a study done by one of the major news organizations recently. Those mail-in places are frauds. Believe it or not, they got the most reasonable prices for the jewelry at a pawn shop.

  6. QUESTION:
    How much is 9 carat gold worth to scrap value.?

    • ANSWER:
      9 Carat £ 6.43 per gram

  7. QUESTION:
    Scrap Gold.. How to figure value?
    How do I figure the value of scrap gold? I need to know the price per gram. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
      It should be published in the paper in the financial section. It varies from day to day, and from country to country, of course. I sold a lot of old broken bits several months ago (many jewellers will buy it) and got about £70 (0) for it. They have to buy it at that day's official price. In the UK it will go back, I think, to the Bank of England, if bought officially like that.

  8. QUESTION:
    Whats the scrap value of an olympic gold medal?

    • ANSWER:
      Quote from about.com:
      Are Olympic gold medals made of gold? Yes, but they haven't been solid gold for almost a century. The medals are designed by the Olympics Committee in each host city, but the designers have to follow a few minimum guidelines:

      all medals must be at least 60mm in diameter and 3mm thick
      gold and silver medals must be made from 92.5 percent silver
      gold medals must be plated with at least six grams of gold.
      Some medals for recent games have been larger. Like the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. The gold and silver medals awarded there were the heaviest ever created, measuring 85mm in diameter and 10mm thick and weighing in at 20 ounces.

      ~~~~~~
      But, if it is actually from the Olympics, people pay more for it because it is an OLYMPIC medal, that increases the value a bit.
  9. QUESTION:
    what is the value for 2 grams of gold (scrap gold)?
    • ANSWER:
      Gold is selling for ~7/oz. You have ~0.064 oz.
      So this is worth about at the market rate. However, it may be hard to tell how pure the gold is, so the only way to find the real value is to take it to a jeweler.
      The real value of anything is whatever the seller and buyer agree to.
  10. QUESTION:
    What is the value of a 22 carat gold half sovereign?
    I want to sell some Royal Mint jewellery (unwanted gifts) to a scrap gold/ second hand jewellery merchant but I don't know what it is worth. I have the following:
    A 9ct gold chain & cross bar (with 10 small diamonds) & a 22ct half sovereign pendant from 2003 - limited edition of 5000. Also a pair of 9ct gold earrings in a cross design with a small emerald in the centre & very small diamonds. Finally a sterling silver fine chain with pendant & 3 small sapphires. Can anyone help? What is the minimum I should take? I had a look on www.royalmint.com & the jewellery on there isn't cheap, but if you are selling it on second hand what sort of price can you expect to get?
    • ANSWER:
      You would be well advised to take them to a reputable jewellery store or two, or a reputable pawnbroker, they also buy scrap gold and will give you a fair price.
      Obviously you wont get full values as they need a margin for profit. If i were you i would also consider a reputable auction house as you might get a better price there, but get a valuation first and put a reserve on at 70% of full value.
      Good Luck.
  11. QUESTION:
    What is the current value for Gold?
    I am going to go to a jeweler and give up my "scrap gold" for cash. I am curious if anyone knows what the average amount is for gold. I know that it depends on what kind of gold it is (10K, 14K, 18K, 24K, etc) but I am curious to know:
    On average, about how much is gold worth per GRAM? per OUNCE?
    I would like an answer in US DOLLARS.
    Thank you!
    • ANSWER:
      Here is a web site that will give you the current spot gold price per Troy ounce:
      http://www.kitco.com/market/
      Divide by 31.1 to get price per gram.
      Your local coin shop pays about 80% of spot. Pawn shops pay less, and cash4gold.com should be avoided (Read some of the responses on Yahoo Answers regarding cash4gold.com and you will see why.)
  14. QUESTION:
    Can a broken watch ever have any scrap value?
    I am having a clear out and I have a Longines 9 ct gold ’Presence’ gents wristwatch which let me down very badly about 10 years ago when its case split. Consequently I rather fell out of love with the Longines marque. I don’t care to repair it by way of replacing the case, the cost would at least equal the price paid for the watch which was £400.
    Should I just throw it away?
    • ANSWER:
      I see watch parts on ebay all of the time. Expensive watch parts, especially older ones do have value as this is often the only source. If the mechanicals are good I would expect that it has some value,
  15. QUESTION:
    If I melt down my gold scraps to gold bars who can I sell the bars to? Is there some sort of Gold Bank?
    I don't want to sell my gold to those gold for cash places/websites because I will only get a fraction of the gold's market value. If I melt down my own gold scrap to gold bars where can I sell the gold bars for Gold's true market value?
    Where or whom do modern day gold prospectors sell their gold to?
    Thanks.
    • ANSWER:
      Anybody who wants to buy your gold bars will have to assay them, heaven only knows what is mixed in with the gold. "White" gold is only 75% gold, for example, the rest is silver and copper. Best would be to find a cash place that will work with you and not charge you assay fees with every batch.
  16. QUESTION:
    Why is heaven described as a place that is paved with gold and gems when mankind gave value to those objects?
    Why did god make heaven with gold and gems when in fact it's humans who placed value in these objects when they in fact have no intrinsic value? In certain societies and civilizations in the past aluminum was valued greater than other precious metals. If that trend followed wouldn't be weird to imagine heaven as one big scrap yard?
    Why does god have to spice up his crib just to impress us mere mortals? Why does god indulge himself in these extravagances when he expects us to live a modest life? Sounds hypocritical.
    • ANSWER:
      On the one hand, when asked what we wil do all day in Heaven, they say that Heaven will be a place beyond our understanding, nothing like our material world ("We could NEVER imagine heaven because god will pass our expectation by millions.") Then they pimp it out like that, as if glorified, eternal beings will be impressed with something as tawdry as rocks and metal. Can't have it both ways. Ridiculous.
      Its like how they imagined Hell; volcanoes and geysers showed people what was underground, and Hell was supposed to be there,...
  17. QUESTION:
    0.5 g gold st. gaudens 20$ bar/scrap/bullion...does this coin has any value?
    It says 20$ on it, can it be used as a 20$ value? There are like 500 coins on ebay sold by a single seller...kind of curious as to where he gets these from...couldn't find them anywhere in the internet except ebay...i might be wrong...anyone willing to give an insight?
    • ANSWER:
      If I understand the weight to be 0.5 grams, than the gold must be at least 19K or better to be worth US. Gold coins usually say .999 fine, which would correspond to 24K. A half gram of 24K gold is worth about .34US.
      Bar/scrap/bullion could be anything. Just because something says on it, dosn't mean it's worth . I suspect this person is trading on people's ignorance. Even it it was real gold, your local grocery store probably would not accept it in payment.
  18. QUESTION:
    I need to know the numismatic value of a gold antique coin.?
    I have an uncirculated 1915 Austrian 4 ducat coin. It is in excellent condition, I haven't had it graded but I would assume it to be MS65+ at least. I've taken it to a couple coin stores but they all tried to rip me off, one told me the coin was worth less than it's weight in scrap gold and the other told me the value of the weight of the scrap gold...which is worthless information to me as i was seeking to learn the numismatic value of the coin (which I'm assuming is more than the weight of the gold it's made out of.) If you could help me out with this at all you'd be doing me a huge favor. Thanks in advance!
    I know it's uncirculated because most of these coins are. Also, there are no blemishes and there is no wear at all on the coin, even on the raised parts of the coin.
    • ANSWER:
      Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but according to Wikipedia, "The Austrian mint still mints single and four-ducats, both dated 1915." So the fact that it is dated 1915 is irrelevant, it could have been minted 3 years ago for all you or I know. Also, worldcoingallery.com doesn't even LIST the coin on their page for Austria, so it's entirely possible that the dealers you took the coin to might actually be telling you the truth. I'm sure someone else around here though might have some more information on the coin, though.
  19. QUESTION:
    How to instill confidence in bidders when selling scrap gold on Ebay?
    I have a substantial amount of scrap gold and want to get as close to market value for it as possible. I have decided I want to sell it in an auction setting.
    There are many small, and broken scraps in my collection. I split the larger scraps, stamped with the carat, by carat. I plan on selling the gold in large lots, by weight, separated this way.
    I am curious if there is anything I can do to instill confidence in bidders that my auction is legitimate. I am also interested in protecting myself from a false claims about the weight, quality or value of the gold after the auction. Is the any outside source or otherwise that I can employ to prove to a buyer that my auction is legitimate?
    I want to sell some gold but dont know the best way to go about it.?
    I wouldnt send it off in one of those envelopes, but what do you do? Go from jeweller to jeweller to see who will give you the best price?
    Also, what happens if you have got a gold ring with diamonds in, someone told me that jewellers will only pay you scrap value for the gold and not pay for the diamonds?
    Help - I really want to get the best deal.
    Thank you
    • ANSWER:
      Those envelopes will send you pennies for your gold.
      And you will never know anybetter and not complain since you never knew the value.
      All the companies will only pay you for the scrap value.
      Take your gold to three pawn shops and dealers.
      You must tell them you need an estimate good for 48 hours and that you will compare other jewelers and pawn shops.
  21. QUESTION:
    If I want to sell some gold jewelry for scrap, how much per gram of gold is a fair price? I know whoever I sell it to has to then sell it to a refiner, and everyone wants to make money along the way, so what should I expect? I know the karat weight of the items and how much they weigh, so I can calculate the exact amount of gold I have. It has a value of about 0 with gold at per gram. Thanks.
  22. QUESTION:
    How to sell scrap gold in Highlands Ranch Colorado?
    I live in Highlands Ranch Colorado, 20 miles south of Denver and Littleton. I have a few old gold rings and some broken 14kt gold necklaces that I would like to sell. I have tried craig's list but only seem to get weird people calling me from pawn shops that want me to take my gold down to Denver to sell it for half of melt value. I was thinking about sending the scrap gold to that CASH 4 GOLD business that I saw on late night TV but when I read the on line reviews NO one had any thing nice to say about their business. Other refiners seem to have a ounce or two minimum for shipping and still charge 10% and send you a check in about two weeks. There is a Hotel Gold Buyer in town this week end and they have bad on-line review as well. Is there a local jewelry shop that would pay cash on the spot and not charge me 50% commission. What is a fair commission when I sell my gold? Please respond with usual percent of commissions or refining charge. Or if you know of a trusted gold refiner if I have to mail my GOLD, Thanks for your responses.
    • ANSWER:
      I have checked into the Cash4Gold and it look like a big scam! The local pawn shop is only a good place to sell your gold if you need cash today and you don't mind getting 50% of value. I have sold a few things on Craig's list but people want you to give way your gold and jewelry because they think you are desperate for cash. found https://sites.google.com/site/goldsilverplatinumcoppermetals/ website looking for some one to by my gold coin because I don't want to pawn it or go to some crap hotel and get offered half of what it is worth. Check out that link and see if that guy is willing to give you a fair deal. Sound like he is Highlands Ranch Colorado just south of Littleton and Centennial I think it is very honest he explains his commission.
  23. QUESTION:
    Gold charm bracelet value please help!!?
    I have a gold chain charm bracelet that I believe is from the 1950 from Lebanon and has been hand crafted with precious stone in it. One of the items is a treasure chest box with blue presses stone on it that opens and it has 4 other charms that are shaped like well. It is 18 K gold with a 750 stamp. It has a safety chain 7 inches long. I can not find any photo on line of it and can’t get any idea of what it is worth. It weighted 5.7 oz I think and I received a offer of 1100 for scrap gold. It’s to nice to be scrap I would like to know were I might find more information on this.
    • ANSWER:
      If the numbers you stated are correct, the bracelet worth much more.
      5.7 oz would be equal approximately to 5.2 troy ounce. If it is 18k gold, the pure gold content would then be about 3.9 troy ounce. Given today's gold market price of about 00 per troy ounce, you are looking here at about 50 of gold worth. Of course, the refiner will charge you for his labor but still, it is far from the 00 you mentioned.
      Verify the numbers yourself by playing with the weight conversion tool at: http://www.pasternakfindings.com/template/Convertor/Jewelry_Size_Weight_converter.htm
      You could also get a feeling of the gold price at: http://www.kitco.com/charts/livegold.html
      It could very well be that the design itself gives the piece an extra value. Consult first with a local jeweler before you reach a decision.
  24. QUESTION:
    where to sell gold bullion / dore from dental scrap gold to?
    I've melted lots of dental scrap into an ingot / gold bar and refined it using a home refining system. its 99.98% gold. where can i sell it to? I saw others on Ebay which sold for a lot less than the gold spot price (ie, spot was /gram and other home-made bars were selling for roughly /gram only) The only ones selling for a good price were the stamped ones from Metalor, Suisse, etc. Since I made it myself, what do I do with it? I tried selling some before to refiners I found online like Midwest Refineries and Garfield, but the return was NOT as advertised. They claimed I would get 94%-96% of the value but they really only gave me like 60% - scammers, to say the least. Anyways, does anyone have experience with a reputable gold buyer for non-minted gold bullions? Allso, I have a good amount of palladium which is about half the price of gold - who can buy that at a good price? Thanks
    im dealing with about 50 oz. what is the minimum for a known refining company to refine my gold, and do you know what rates they charge?
    • ANSWER:
      Many coin dealers will buy bullion. You might also try jewelry stores (real jewelers, not the places in the mall).
  25. QUESTION:
    why is there such a difference in price between silver and gold?
    they are both precious metals yet when you look at even scrap value 9ct which is only 37.5% gold is £8-£9 per gram yet sterling silver which is 92.5% silver is only 25p-28p per gram
    why is there such a big difference
    • ANSWER:
      Each metal is priced as per its availability and cost of mining. More rare a metal more precious it will be. Take iron, available in abundance see the price and than move on to Platinum, Uranium they gets costlier simply because of low availability and enhanced cost of finding them and mining them.
  26. QUESTION:
    how much is my 9 carat gold necklace worth?
    Hi
    Ive a 459 gram 9 carat gold necklace which im wanting to sell,ive had a value of £3400 for scrap value though it is definitely not scrap..Could anyone give me UK contact details of any refineries that they think would offer me at least £10 per gram as i no myself to buy this type of necklace would cost around £8000 of a jewellers.
    • ANSWER:
      Ignore the jeweler price. Jeweler's markups are legendary. The scrap dealer is paying for the gold in the necklace, and he is out to make a profit. Let's take a look at that.
      you can check spot prices anytime here:
      http://www.kitco.com/market/bp_charts.html
      Spot price for 24K is* £22.393 per gram, multiply that by 9/24 because your gold is 9K.
      I get £8.39 per gram so your 459 gram necklace has a spot value of approximately £3854*
      * Spot prices change rapidly - check again before you buy or sell.
      That scrap value is actually not that bad, you would expect to sell at a discount to spot value.
      Certainly nobody is likely to offer you more than the spot value.
      You might do better in a private sale if you can find a buyer.
    How much does gold jewelry retain its value?
    My husband is looking to sell a necklace he bought 12 years ago. It is 14k gold and weighs 28 grams. He bought it for 00 at a jewelry store. It has a unique lobster claw link and we have never seen anything like it elsewhere. He hasn't worn it in awhile and would like to sell it to get the our kids some presents for Christmas, but wants to make sure that he doesn't get ripped off. My question is this - I have researched online and found a formula for how much he should expect to make for 28 grams of 14k gold as scrap gold (4.17 is what it is worth and from what I can tell dealers will pay 80-90% so 1.34-2.75) - should we expect to get closer to what he bought it for seeing as it isn't really scrap?
    Scrap Gold - what to expect?
    I have lots of gold I am going to scrap. A friend of mine works at the Kiosk so I'm sure I won't get completely screwed...however, what do I need to expect? I know gold is at 1400. right now which would be the base price for 24k. So, about per gram of pure gold. How much less will the 14k be than the 24k, and how much lower will the 10k be from the 14k? Obviously I'm not expecting to get the full value. I know how a business has to run. But what is a good range? 30%? 50%? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
    The gold is separated into the different purities. Sorry for not adding before.
    • ANSWER:
      normally, u should separate the scrap into : 14k, or, 10k, or 24k. this will be more easy for u to sell it in future.
      if it is a mixture, nobody can give u a price about it.
      the best is : u look for a company who can re-fine the gold. u could send the scrap to them and they will re-fine it for u: u will get the fine gold ( or they will buy it ) and will pay them the labor!
      4 oz * .375 = 1.5 oz equivalent of pure gold
      1.5 oz * 1500/oz = 50
      Do not expect to get the full amount if you sell. 9k is a fairly low jewelry grade, not an investment grade, so any offer is likely to be at a significant discount.
  34. QUESTION:
    how do you smelt gold so that i can sell my scrap gold?
    does melting it down decreas the value
    • ANSWER:
      It does decrease the value, you have paid for the workmanship that went into producing the item, if you want scrap value then take it to a jewellers/precious metal dealer and compare the money they offer you.
  36. QUESTION:
    How the value of gold is calculated for gold with purity less than 24k.?
    I just inquire about the rates for the gold in local jewelry shop and got the rates as 1175 per gm for 24K gold and 1155 for gold jewelry (the jewelery does not have any BIS or Carat mark on it. instead marked with percentage like 85% mostly.I am queries to find how exactly the rate is calculated.
    Other rates the jeweler quoting are as below (per gram, for 18 aug 2008)
    Pure gold 24K -1175
    jewelery --1155
    Replacement(Badla)-1145
    Scrap (mod)--1135
    • ANSWER:
      How would you know what it has been alloyed with and how much? If it quoted as Karat it must be assayed or hallmarked. The its value is calculated as so many 24ths. i.e. 22k=22/24 Otherwise you are buying a pig in a poke.
  37. QUESTION:
    Are U.S. Coins now worth more as metal scrap than thier face value?
    I know that silver and gold bullion coins are but I am talking about more common coins like the penny, nickle, dime and quarter.
    Thanks
    • ANSWER:
      That was the case a year ago with the penny, but commodity prices in general have fallen since then, not sure about zinc (which makes up 99% of a penny's metal content). The other coins, probably not -- there's not much more metal in a quarter than in a penny, but it has 25 times the monetary value.
  38. QUESTION:
    Do you think it is possible that gold coins are being diluted?
    I wonder if gold coins are being diluted like they were in the past? How would we really know?.
    King Croesus of Lydia was the first to mint gold coins more than 2500 years ago. Subsequently many a country's ruler used the trick of debasing the value of gold coins by adding other metals to their content. If the purity of gold in coins was diluted in this way then inflation would occur - more coins would be required to buy goods. And.. of course , we would not be getting one ounce of gold in the coins that we think we are paying for.
    Does anyone know if it's possible to test a coin to not only verify the ounces, but the quality of the gold. And now , there is so much scrap gold being sold, how would we know if it is filled inside with 14 or 18 carat recycled gold?
    • ANSWER:
      Easy.
      Determine the volume of the gold coin, find the weight and then calculate the two to determine the density. Then simply compare the density with that of pure gold.
  39. QUESTION:
    Buying gold in foreign countries?
    Hi,
    I have a question; I have learned that the U. S. Dollar-though shrinking in value still has some decent momentum for its value in China. Therefore-- what about the price of gold in China? Can a person buy gold in China and get more for it because the US dollar still holds value there, or are there limitations to importing gold from China to the US? What about other countries as well ... any ideas on how to procure scrap gold and come out with a big profit? Thanks,.
    • ANSWER:
      Actually, the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Chinese Renminbi is fixed by the Chinese government. That creates the perception that the US Dollar is maintaining its value there. As you may be aware, the US has been putting pressure on China to sever that link, which would cause the Chinese Renminbi to appreciate rapidly against the dollar (which would also make Chinese goods more expensive in the US and make US goods cheaper in China.
      In the mean time, buying gold there may not be a bad idea. I don't know of any restrictions on exporting gold from China. You may have to pay customs in the US, though.
  40. QUESTION:
    What is the easiest way to identify palladium jewelry?
    I scrap gold and am starting to become more interested in palladium due to its rising market value. I need this info purely for scrap purposes.
    • ANSWER:
      Palladium jewelry should be marked 950Pd or have a similar hallmark/stamp somewhere on it. You should also be able to use a density or specific gravity test to verify as it is lighter than gold, and platinum but slightly heavier than silver or sterling silver.
      It's not particularly common in jewelry, though it is becoming more popular thanks to a big push by mining companies. Primarily, you want to look for a mark, mostly used is 950Pd.
  41. QUESTION:
    • ANSWER:
  42. QUESTION:
    Who pays market-rate for gold? I went to a 'Gold Buying Event', and for 00 of gold, they offered my 00.?
    And I mean 00 scrap value, not as jewellery.
    I told the guy to his face he was a con-man.
    And promptly left.
    • ANSWER:
      It depends.... There are a number of exchanges that deal in purified gold, but the skills (and equipment) required to purify the gold is beyond the average persons abilities... Meaning, you might only get ,000 for that gold of yours, but someone has to melt it down, purify and test it, and then have the certifications (and bonding), to prove his is trust worthy...
  43. QUESTION:
    Ebay Sellers using reverse psychology with gold listings?
    I am intrigued when I see more bidders looking at gold jewellery listings that don't include gold karat! Do these sellers rely on people doing searches in hopes to find a 'mistake' in a listing with the hope that nobody else will find it?
    Surprisingly lots of people find these listings while ignoring the listings that clearly state gold karat. I even wrote a few sellers and told them to please include gold karat in their listing to get more hits. But, some of them left their listing as is.
    Do these sellers know what they're doing? Are they relying on those who look for mistakes to create competition among those who stumble upon their listings? I see the price shoot up to more than scrap value and see that their eBay counters are higher than one would expect!
    Would somebody explain this?
    • ANSWER:
      You just said that you see gold listings without Karat getting more hits and then said that you wrote the Listerine'selling them to include Karat weight because they would get more hits...
      So which is it, the Karat weighted jewelry or the non which gets more hits? What about bids?
      Believe it or not some people buy Jewelry because they like the way it looks, not just for scrap value. in those cases Karat weight is not going to be that important nor is the per once value...
      Maybe they figured they will get more jewelry buyers and less scrap metal buyers if they don't list the K weight
  44. QUESTION:
    Should I invest in gold bars?
    Hello,
    My fiancee and I are selling some scrap gold, which has sparked my interest in gold as an investment. I was wondering if it would make sense to just get our scrap gold melted into a bar, and then purchasing additional bars as investments. I am 24 now and could probably buy .5 oz a month at current value. Would this be a smart investment for the future? I like the idea of having a physical investment (not to meantion the cool factor of having a safe full of gold bars). Is now a good time to be investing in gold? What is the best way to go about this? Who sells the cheapest bars (closest to market value)? Thanks so much!
    • ANSWER:
      Gold is generally a very popular investment, however it depends on your long term goals per say, if your looking for safety then gold is a good investment because when, investors or the public are fearful about the currency or a currency they generally turn to gold. Gold can be bought in forms of a bars, or in form of a equity investment e.g. ETF's (exchange Traded funds) a good one is IShares COMEX gold trust (NYSE:IAU) this is like a stock but its price fluctuates with the gold price in the market, technically you would be holding gold because the company responsible for this ETF holds 63.2 tonnes of gold in storage. Note that in order to purchase ETF's you have to buy them through a stock broker. Another way to invest in gold is through stocks gold companies such as (NYSE:GG) this is riskier because your dealing with a companies stock which involves tracking they're returns and they're movement, in price, and the risk that a normal stock would posses.
      Golds Price fluctuates as do all commodities, hence forth if you want to make money on gold make sure you buy it at a low price this is generally when the economy is doing well and the USD (u.s dollar) is strong and rising.
      In Conclusion confirm with your investment advisor what your long term or short term goals are and in that relation you can invest appropriately.
      Good Luck
      Happy Investing
  45. QUESTION:
    Where could I sell my alexandrite ring?
    I have a 14k gold ring with 15 alexandrite small round stones and several very small diamonds. The bring is aprox 8 years old but has never been worn. I was given the ring as a present but was recently advised as to how rare alexandrite is and its gem potentitals to change colour etc. I want to sell the ring but am having trouble finding anyone to buy the ring for anything other than scrap gold metal value. The ring cost £460 new and I therefore refuse to give this away for £30. Could anyone point me in the direction of a gem lover who would appreciate the alexandrite or to someone who would be interested in buying? I can provide photos if necessary.
    • ANSWER:
      don't believe the previous poster. Of course Alexandrite is very precious and expensive, but it all depends on the quality as well. How strong is the color change etc. Considering the original buying price, I am sorry to say, the stones can't be great and could even be synthetic. Do you have any documentation about the ring/gemstones?
      Your best bet is a private sale, advertise in the newspaper, on etsy etc.
  46. QUESTION:
    How much would be a good price to haggle?
    I noticed a very unusual gold necklace in second hand jewellery store and I'm interested in purchasing it, especially as I know that there's another serious buyer who would like to try and melt it down.
    It's a high quality piece of jewellery 18K with a good (world renowned) name attached to it and weighs in at 142 grams (solid gold)
    I've checked around and if I was trying to buy something similar to it new from the original retailer it would cost me ,250 - ,500.
    I've calculate the scrap value of the necklace to be ,237.
    The seller is pushing that it's a "unique" piece and "vintage" therefore worth a lot more; the price set is ,500.
    There's no way that I'm paying that much for it, retail prices are inflated anyway but then to inflate it again is beyond wishful thinking. I know that the other buyer will offer a lot less than that and probably less than me as they're only interested in the gold value, not the name.
    I'm keen to haggle with this seller but this time I'm not sure what to offer. Typically I offer 50% the asking price and work from there with it usually ending up at 35% the asking price, but I know that jewelry is the special exception to the rule as the Western market always over-inflates it cripplingly.
    The seller also seems well versed in trading by weight rather than a set marked price, they've listed the weight per gram on all the items.
    What would be a good price to try haggling for?
    • ANSWER:
      You usually start by offering 50% asking price and then you get it for only 35%?! Wow, you're much better at bargaining than I am! I guess you mean 35% OFF.
      If the other buyer will pay only K for the gold, and you can get a similar item new for K AND you neither appreciate nor acknowledge the suppposed antique value, then i would offer .5K first. Then, he has to decide whether to hold out for the vintage collector.
      The relevant points are 50% new value = K. That would be what you would offer a private seller who was offering it second-hand.
  48. QUESTION:
    How do I claim cash from gold?
    I have an 1898 9-carat gold pocket watch given to me by my Grandmother and she said to sell it and keep the money.
    How would I go about doing this without using online Cash for Gold websites? I have taken this watch to Jewellers and they have told me how they would get it insurance valued but at a fee which they would charge. I'm not prepared to pay fees and don't want to send this watch to anonymous online traders who claim to pay out for your 'scrap gold'.
    What else can I do to get the monetary worth of this watch?
    Thanks.
    • ANSWER:
      Take it to a nearby auction house. They will value it for free. If the valuation appeals to you get them to auction it. Set a minimum price and see what happens. You will have to pay them a percentage.
      Hope this helps. Good luck.
  50. QUESTION:
    How should I sell some old jewelry?
    I have a couple of rings that are from a engagement that went south a few years back. One of the ring's stone is pretty much trashed, but the setting is okay, and 14k gold, no scratches on it. Other is the engagement ring, 14k white gold, no-scratches, custom designed, with a asscher cut diamond.
    I'm trying to get as much as possible from the rings. Is it wiser to pull the stones, and scrap the gold for value, or is it wiser to attempt to leave them and sell them as complete? I've read that 24k gold is selling for around 00/ounce. I was offered about a 1000 for it all. I have about 5500 in both from new.
    What advice can you give me? Is it worth scrapping the gold and selling stones individually or will I get more as a whole?
    • ANSWER:
      Hi, your best bet for getting the most money for these rings would be to remove the stones and sell them to a refinery. I work for a precious metals refinery called Metallix Direct Gold and we would be happy to give you a quote on your rings. Our website has a calculator which will give you an estimate on how much your rings are worth with daily updated gold prices according to the London Fix. If you are interested in selling to us you can send in your rings, we will give you a price, and you can reject the price if you are not satisfied. We will then send your rings back to you as soon as possible. Our company eliminates the middleman so your gold goes directly to the refinery.
      If you have an extra minute you could download our free white paper on The 7 Steps To Getting The Most Money For Your Silver. I will put both of the links below for you.
