     If you think that the world economy is going to improve and the US$ is going to increase in value then it would be a time to sell gold.

     But if you believe that the US$ is going down the drain then it would not be advisable to sell gold unless you had to.

     But in all markets there are short term fluctuations that allow for a profit in either camp.

     If you have a good need for the funds then go ahead and sell as you will have gained a considerable increase over the last year in the value.

      Are you sure that it is 24k, and not 22k or 23k(24k is rarely used in jewelery because it is too soft), the factor determining the value is the price of gold per oz , or gram. 0 will be about 1/3 of an oz of 24k chain. it would have a greater value to someone as an item of jewelery.

      If you bought the chain at retail value 8 years ago you might only have 6 grams so you will only get about 0 now.

      It would have been nice to know the weight of your chain.

      Gold is Gold. People who deal with the metal know what they are doing. It does not need to be stamped or certified. Gold is measured in Troy Ounces and that is a big differance than what you pay for a loaf of bread. 12 oz. = 1 pound or 480 grains. Too often the gold is mixed with other metals and a scratch test is made to assay the purety. Streak the gold against a smooth black rock and drop a drip of nitric acid on it. what remains is Gold and can be compared with a streak of known pure gold. The additional weight is lost in the transaction. A Gram is a metric measurement and is 1/1000 of a kilogram. 1 kilo equals 2.2 pounds. 1 gram equals .035 Ounces.
      When selling Gold demand the price on the market. Every dealler will discount the price for reasons of processing fees. You DO NOT allow this. The dealer will make money regardless of the fees. The profit on Gold is 300% if you know the business.

      Well I just don't have enough details on the piece to give you a clear answer. Generally if it you take it to a pawn broker you will just get weight value of it, which would be very little, whatever the price of gold is per ounce, probably around twenty dollars. They would melt it down to make other pieces.

      Now, if the necklace has some interesting features to it, or a story behind it, you can sell it to an interested buyer. You can try posting to ebay, keep in mind they only allow one free picture to be posted of the item, others you will have to pay for. It's all in the salesmanship.
      Does the necklace tell a story?
      Where did you get it?
      Who made it?
      How rare is this particular item?
      How old is it?
      You might perhaps be able to get what you paid for it with a good enough story. You might even pick up a cheap velvet jewelry case at a pawn shop or garage sale to add a finishing touch to your product.

      However, in these very tough economic times, you're mostly likely going to have to take a cut to get it off your hands. Go to Ebay and search for similar items. Put them on your watch list and see what they wind up selling for. You'll know about how much your item will get then.

      In the end though, the old economic saying still holds true: "something is worth what someone will give you for it." If you can convince someone that your item is unique, they will be willing to pay more for it.

      Take it to a jewelry store to be weighed. Most places should be able to give you an idea of it's value. I've heard that the places to send gold advertised on TV are scams. Try sending it direct to a gold refining company.

      Assuming that the coin is genuine, it is worth a lot more. Compare it to the coins shown in the link below (navigate using the large arrows). That will give you a rough idea of condition.

      Based on gold content alone, it is worth at least 00. If it is in near-perfect condition, possibly more.

      Do not rub the coin. Only handle it by the edges. Never clean a coin as it destroys value.

      There is 32150 troy ounces in one metric ton, so Gordon sold

      400 metric tons times 32150 oz/ton times 275 dollars per oz =3.54 billion dollars.

      Now todays value

      400 metric tons, times 32150 oz/ton times ll31 dollars/oz= l.45 x l0^10 dollars or l4.5 billion dollars.

      so if Gordon was selling gold today he could have gotten l0.96 billion dollars more for the gold.
