     Ok, when we talk value we have to define the market. Are we talking about A.) Replacement value new.
     B.) Fair market value as is.
     C.) Gold or scrap value?
     The most active market for used chains is the gold or scrap value. Since your chain is 14K, that means it is approx 58.3% gold, the rest is copper and silver. So 18.6 grams x 58.3% = 10.84 grams net. If you're only selling the dealer one chain, he's probably going to offer about half its value, so that he can realize a profit by selling it to a refiner and make it worth while transaction for him. Based on today's closing gold price 4.40 per fine troy ounce, I would offer 7.44/gram (for 14K) x 18.6/ gram = 8.40. The most frequently occurring price in the marketplace (small volume scrap gold sales) determines the value.

      So spot price for pure 24K gold is about /gram. If your scrap gold is 18K, it is only 75% gold; 12K is only 50% gold. So adjust accordingly.

      The funny thing about spot price if you are selling is that nobody will pay you spot price. They will pay you less, but they will never pay you more. Obviously you want the most you can get, but you will probably have to accept a small percentage under spot price.

      So if you have 40 grams of 12K scrap gold, it could be worth up to 0.

      The spot price of gold means how much one troy ounce of pure (24 karat) gold sells for on the open market. A troy ounce is just a fuzz over 31 grams, while a standard ounce is 28 grams. Right now, the spot price is about 5 an ounce, which is about .65 a gram.

      To determine the value of a necklace or other gold jewelry, you first have to figure out the percentage of pure gold it has. All gold jewelry (not plated) will have a stamp on the item itself or a small gold tag on it that has the karat content stamped on it. If it's 14 karat gold, that's 14/24 pure gold or about 58% pure. If it's 18 karat gold, that's 18/24 pure gold or 75% pure.

      Next, you weigh the item to determine how much actual gold you have. Let's say your necklace weighs 10 grams.

      Now, you have to determine the weight of the pure gold that's in that necklace. If it's 14 karat gold, that means you would have 10 grams x 58%, or 5.8 grams of pure gold. So, the gold value would be 5.8 grams x .65 per gram = 8.77 worth of pure gold.

Most dealers would offer you or for it. It would have minimal collector value coming from a piece of jewelry so melt value is all you will probably get.

      Gold is worth 6 USD per pure ounce, But your gold is not pure and is not in recognized investment bars or coins so it will fetch a lower price than 7/12 X 906.

      The person buying it would want to make a profit and ensure your gold is the purity you say it is.

      If your gold is jewellry, you might be better off to auction it on E-bay

      You are assuming the nugget is pure gold. Gold occurs naturally as alloys with copper, silver, mercury, lead and zinc, among other things. You would have to have it assayed to be sure.
