Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How much money can i actually get when I sell broken gold?
I have lots of unwanted & broken gold. And want to sell some old gold pieces. And I know that the places to sell gold is endless....And, know that gold is trading at an all time high, I think its over 0.00 an ounce. How much can I expect to get from a dealer if I have an ounce of gold? Should I take it to a pawn shop or an independent dealer? OR should I sell them online?? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Never sell your gold to a pawn shop or jeweler. They are just going to turn around and sell what they bought from you to a precious metals refinery for more money than they paid you. I would recommend sending your gold straight to the source. Many precious metals refineries out there are buying gold directly from the public and paying way more than a pawn shop or jeweler. Shop around for refineries posting their prices for individuals. I would recommend looking at Metallix Direct Gold. The have their prices posted daily and offer free shipping and insurance.

  2. QUESTION:
How much money do you actually get when you sell broken gold?
I want to sell some old gold pieces. The places to sell gold is endless....And, know that gold is trading at an all time high, I think its over 0.00 an ounce. How much can I expect to get from a dealer if I have an ounce of gold? Should I take it to a pawn shop or an independent dealer? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Well It depends on whom you sell it to. If you sell it to a pawn shop or jewelry store, all they want to do with it is resell it to someone else. So if it is broken or chipped or dirty or messed up in some way then they wont give you as much for it cause there is a smaller chance of someone buying it from them. If it has a lot of gold in it you can sell it to a jewelry maker or a factory that sells gold and they will melt it down and give you money for whatever amount of actual gold is there, cause they can then make whatever they want out of it.

You can invest in gold in a few ways:

buy actual gold. but then you have to find a place to store it. that costs money.

invest in gold mining stocks. as the price of gold goes up, the price of these stocks goes up (usually)

buy a gold ETF, such as ticket symbol GLD.

What's the best way to sell gold and know we're not getting ripped off?
My grandma called my mom today and told her she has a bunch of old gold jewelry she doesn't want anymore and wants us to sell it to use for our bills and such. How do we know if were getting a good deal or not when selling this gold? Does it go by ounce for jewelry as well?

    • ANSWER:
You should be able to get 70% of its value from a reputable jeweler. The value is easy:

Gold per ounce = ,400. There are 31 grams per ounce (Troy), so...
      Gold per gram = .

      24 karat = 100% gold.
      14 karat = 58% gold.
      18 karat = 75% gold.

Example: You bring in a 14karat gold necklace that weighs 11 grams. How much is it "worth" and how much should you get?

      Worth: 11 grams x gram x 58% = 7

      Get: 7 x 70% = 1

  11. QUESTION:
How To Sell Gold Mobile Phone Numbers On Ebay?
    Hi,

I'm looking into making some money and have noticed a lot of people selling gold mobile phone numbers on ebay etc and was wondering if someone would be willing to let me know where I could get these numbers from to sell them.

    All help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
The number is programmed into the SIMM.

I ASSUME you can either get SIMM's programmed with numbers of your choice OR you just obtain thousands of free SIMM's with random numbers and sift through them for the 'special' numbers ..

Needless to say, I would like to bet some Chinese factory is churning our fake SIMM's with any 'golden' number you care to mention by the thousand (in much the same way as they churn out USB sticks with fake capacities = as you will know if you ever purchased a '32Gb' stick off eBay for only to find it max's out at a few Mb :-) )

  12. QUESTION:
How do I sell my a class gold ring at a pawn shop?
I do not have experience at dealing with the clerks at pawn shops. Has anybody ever sold gold and gotten a good deal?
Do you know a system / trick on how to handle your transaction? Thanks a million!!

    • ANSWER:
The pawn shop will give you a price for what they will pay you for it. Often, they will give you a little more for it if you say you want a loan on it and they think you'll be returning to buy it back. Have you checked into any scrap gold dealers or though about craigslist or ebay? It is possible to have the ring altered for another person(new stone, high school and such).

  13. QUESTION:
How,Where and Whom to sell gold bars in the Philippines?
Is there any policies pertaining on selling bulk of gold bars in the Philippines? How to do it and is there any tax on it and how much?

    • ANSWER:
Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas - Security Plant Complex (SPC) located in East Avenue, Quezon City. It is right across Heart Center. There is no tax, and it is the safest way to sell your gold and help the economy. Go to the Mint and Refinery at SPC and inquire.

They will test your Gold if it is genuine and know the Karat, they would buy your gold based on the Troy Ounce value per trading day. From what I know they will issue a voucher, and your gold is to be paid after 30 days. What is good is that it is the Bank that makes the Philippine Currency, so you can be assured they you will be paid with real money for your real gold.

Allot of gold prospectors and panners sell their nuggets at SPC, so it is a common thing.

  14. QUESTION:
Where, How do I sell gold coins at market value?
Will a bank buy gold coins for market value?
Or should I sell to a coin dealer?
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
How do you define market value?
Coin dealers will pay 80% to 90% of the value of the metal or 50% - 60% of catalog value, whichever is greater. Banks, at least in the US, don't buy gold. In Mexico, banks buy Mexican gold coins at about 90% of the metal value but don't buy non-Mexican coins.
Selling them yourself on eBay might be better, but then you have to consider eBay's fees.

  15. QUESTION:

Guys Please don't say get stocks instead or don't invest all in gold or wait blah blah... I need real information on how much minimum capital I should have to trade gold? Which site/s will allow me to trade it on live gold prices?

    • ANSWER:
To trade futures with Interactive brokers, you need about 00 per contract. Their margin requirements are usually at exchange mins, so you may not do better. Intra-day margins used to be 50% of that, may have been reduced or eliminated, I don;t ever run my acct so tight that it matters to me.

  16. QUESTION:
How can I buy and sell gold?
I have an opportunity to sell gold to a refinery. What is a good way to buy gold in the USA so I could resell it?

    • ANSWER:
Gold bullion is most often used as a hedge as it is the gold itself which retains value thus making gold equity useless in terms of asset protection. You can either buy bullion in the form of marked bars or gold coins. coins are usually easier to move about and liquidate both due to their smaller size as well as the fact that they are clearly marked. For this very reason it is suggested that if you decide to purchase gold bars you should only purchase clearly marked ones because there have been many cases in which the bar was only made up of a gold crust and the rest was a different type of metal with a comparable weight to volume ratio as that of gold.

we live in an imperfect world where scammers try to wring out your last drop of blood you will have to be watchful when determining where to buy gold. Of course, the best places to buy gold are dealers with a stellar status and trademark, who can also be found online. The Internet gives you the benefit of being able to get recommendations from previous clients easily which will help you conclude whether or not the vendor is reliable.

How do I sell gold coins?
I keep hearing that gold is a good investment. Banks sell gold coins. If I buy 1, where do I sell it later to get a profit? I want to buy & sell through safe secure channels like banks.

    • ANSWER:
Generally Banks (which is very secure) do not buy back the gold.

  23. QUESTION:
How could I sell my Swiss gold coins?
I've got some Swiss francs that are solid gold and were issued by banks in switzerland - to sell them do I have to take them back to that bank or is there any other way of selling gold?
Don't suggest doing one of the postal gold things off the telly please - this is serious gold worth a lot of money

    • ANSWER:
I am guessing that what you have are the Swiss 20 Franc gold coins from the late 1800s up to 1947. Those are worth at least the value of the gold (which today is about US4). Nearly any coin shop will pay 90% of that. Pawn shops and jewelry stores generally pay somewhat less, and selling by mail is outright foolishness.
If you have 10 Franc coins, those will go for about 20% more than bullion value. The 100 Franc coins are outright rare.

How do people sell gold nuggets/flakes?
I quite often see gold nuggets & flakes being sold on eBay, etc. and there are actually quite many people bidding on them.

What do they actually do with it? Make a gold ring out of it for themselves, or is there a special shops where you can trade in few grams of gold nuggets/flakes???

    • ANSWER:
Gold is sold and valued by weight. The flakes are minute fractions of a gram and have no real value. The nuggets can be used for repairing other items but only if you know how to smelt them down and mix it with stronger metals. Gold is too weak to use alone. Why people bid? That is up to them I have bought several gram bars for good prices when gold was down and sold them locally when it was up but that was all.

  36. QUESTION:
Do u need a license or permit to buy/sell gold in Oklahoma City?
I am interested in buying gold. How do I find out if I need a license or permit to do so in Oklahoma or any where else?

    • ANSWER:
You do not need a license or permit to buy and hold gold for personal purposes. If you are operating a business, you may need a license.
Visit City Hall or contact the Chamber of Commerce in Oklahoma city.

I operate a computer repair business. However, I have so store or public shop, I go on site, so essentially I operate out of my truck. Since I have no store or place of business, I do not need a license where I live. If I had a computer store, or even a walk-in repair shop, I would need a license in my community. Your mileage may vary.

  37. QUESTION:
How do I sell gold chain?
I bought a 24K gold chain and a 24K gold dragon carved pendant several years ago. I got them at a jewelry shop and they come with a certificate of 24K gold from that shop. It was about 0 back then. Now, I want to sell them. Where could I sell them? And how much would they sell for? I live in the U.S.

    • ANSWER:
If you're selling for the gold value only, than it goes by weight. If you're selling for the aesthetics of the jewelery, than it can go much higher than the cost of the gold, just as it did years ago when you bought it.

Ebay or other such site would be your best bet. Ebay has the best reputation, and I highly suggest you open a Paypal account and use that as the only method of acceptable payment. This is the safest method of money transfer on ebay for both buyer and seller.

For a starting/reserve price to list the jewelry at, you could pay the cost of an appraisal, but that probably won't be cost effective for such a small piece. You could, if you wish, consult two or three pawn shops. This should give you an idea of the minimum value at least. Some mom & pop jewelry stores may give you a rough estimate without charging appraisal fees. It couldn't hurt to ask.

  38. QUESTION:
how do you sell gold ingots - does it have to be at a gold trader or will a bank buy them?
I am in the country and there does not seem to be anyone that does this.

    • ANSWER:
In the USA, there is no legal restriction on selling them to any interested party. It is most common, however, to sell gold ingots at a coin shop. Assuming the hallmark on your ingots are one of the commonly recognized ones, most coin dealers will pay about 95% of current spot price.
Current spot gold as of this writing is 1.60 per ounce. For updates, check the web site below.

  39. QUESTION:
    Where/How to Sell Gold Jewellery?
What is the best way to sell gold jewelery in India or in the US without taking a big discount ? I know that taking them to a shop would mean that you will have to sell it a very low price, but I need a good rate since I need to take care of some loans. It would be great if some one has any clever ideas to tackle this. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I would strongly suggest checking out the Silver and Gold Exchange before selling gold or silver to ANYONE. I did a great deal of research, online and offline, and learned a lot about this business. I checked pawn shops, jewelers, "gold parties", hotel "buying events as well as the online buyers, including the "as seen on tv" guys. I found that the Silver and Gold Exchange paid more than anyone else I could find. I liked the fact that they post the prices they pay per gram (beware of the places that quote in pennyweight/DWT) on a live price chart at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com I also checked out their Better Business Bureau report and found they have never had a single complaint as opposed to HUNDREDS of complaints some other companies have! I recommend them 100%

  44. QUESTION:
in World of Warcraft how some pages do to sell gold?
What kind of sistem do they have? or its just a trick to get money and you'll never see any gold?

I don't want to get gold from them. I think thats for loosers. But Im curious how do they do that.

    • ANSWER:
They pay people to play WoW and get as much gold as they can, then they will place prices up according to the servers economy (new servers cost more). After you send them money, the gold will be transfered to you either via in-game mail or trades. This is an action that violates the TOS and is a bannable offense.

Of course if you just wanna know how to farm gold for yourself that link I put gives some good tips IMO.

  47. QUESTION:
    How do you sell gold?
Everyone keeps telling me to buy gold, but what if the world doesn't end? How does one sell it without taking a loss?

    • ANSWER:
Short answer is, you can't buy gold hoping to make a gain but having no chance of making a loss unless you do a little lying/cheating/stealing. That would be like free money...

That said, if you're serious about buying gold, note that you will pay a premium for physical metal, which likely mean's you'll take a loss on it all things equal (if gold prices are constant, etc). You can hold paper ownership, but even then there's a bit of a fee.

  49. QUESTION:
how much could i sell this small gold charm for?
I have a very small gold charm of the eiffel tower. I want to bring it to a place that sells gold and silver. How much will I get for it>

    • ANSWER:
Nobody here can tell you how much you will get. What we can tell you is how it works.

It will be tested for the purity of the gold, then weighed to find out how much gold there is. The weight of the piece is multiplied by the purity to get the actual gold weight (AGW), which is the weight of pure gold in the piece. That number is then multiplied by the spot market price of gold. That result would be the 100% value of the gold, which you will not receive.

If the charm is 24K gold, you may be offered 95% of the value because it will be easy to turn into something else to sell for a nice premium above market value. It's pure gold and needs no refining. A 10K or 14K charm might be discounted 25% or more.

Just yesterday, I decided to unload a 14K gold chain I had found while cleaning out a house. Full market value of the gold at yesterday's price was 5 and the best deal I could get was 7. I took it, because it was found money and the chain wasn't doing anything for me sitting in a drawer.

You need to go to more than one place. At least three, to be safe. There are places that will cheat you. I saved an elderly woman a lot of money yesterday. I took my chain to the place that usually pays the most, got my price of 7, then took it to a large retail jeweler that offered less. Then I went to the mall, though I was pretty sure the Zales and Kays don't buy jewelry, they only sell it. I was right. But, just outside the Kay store, there was a small kiosk that offered to buy gold and silver as well sell it. This woman was there with a bag of silver US quarters and a few from Canada. The guy was looking them over for mint marks and counting them. I counted, too, and wanted to see just how low-ball the guy was going to be. I got a bad vibe off of him. He was a young guy and I judged. from him stepping away to make a phone call, that he was checking with the owner about how much to pay. I nudged the woman gently and whispered, 'Don't sell, I'll give you somewhere better.' and we agreed to meet a few stores over. The guy offered her each for the US quarters and nothing for the Canadian. She said that she was just getting an idea, then left, and I had him check my gold chain. The offer was 0.

When my wife and I met up with the woman, I found out that she wanted to sell her coins that day to pay some bills, and she didn't know who to take them to. She probably would have sold them to that guy, and not just those. She had bags of more quarters, plus dimes and half dollars. Well, there was, yesterday (it's higher today), over worth of silver in ONE quarter. She couldn't believe it. I told her she wouldn't get that much, because the dealer needs to make a profit, but that she should be able to get no less than 28 times face value per coin, and possibly more, which is .00 + for each quarter. Much better than , eh?

I sent her to the shop I was going to. My wife went in to sell the chain and right after she came out, the woman came out - my wife hadn't noticed her in there - and walked by the car. She saw us, and she was happy. I asked how many times face value she was paid, I had told her to get that number as well as a total price, so she could compute the number herself. She was paid 30 times face value, which was .00 for each dime, .50 for each quarter, and for each half. She walked away with over ,700 to pay bills with. If she'd sold to the first guy, she'd have gotten about 0.

Long story, but it should teach you to shop around first before you sell.
