By hosting gold parties, you and your friends can make money just by selling the gold jewelry that's been sitting in your jewelry boxes so long you've forgotten you even owned them! Or all the broken jewelry that you'll have to pay to have fixed. You can sell scrap gold, which is also called recycled gold, like old gold dental fillings, teeth, bridges and crowns. Perhaps you have some gold coins or bullion you want to sell. No matter what you have, if it's gold, you can sell it.
And R & L Gold Buyers, LLC wants to buy it. It won't cost you anything - in fact, we'll pay you for hosting a gold party. You'll make 10% of everything that's sold at your party. And, just to start 2010 off right, SellGoldGetMoney.com will give you a bonus 10% to host a party - that's 20% of the total amount of gold that's sold at your party. Since gold is worth more than ever before, the money you can make will add up quickly. Let's say ,000 worth of gold jewelry and gold scrap is sold at your party - you'll make 0! When was the last time you made a couple hundred bucks during an enjoyable evening?
Your gold party can last as long or as short as you like. The actual transaction for each of your friends can take as little as five minutes. Your friends can come and go as they please, or can laugh, relax, snack, and socialize throughout the evening with the rest of your friends. When you go to work the next day and your co-workers ask what you did the night before, you can tell them you had fun trading commodities! Arranging gold parties is a snap. Just call the main gold buyer, Levi, at 602-708-6830, let him know the date and time of your party, and Levi will send a professional gold buyer to your location.
And there's not a lot of fine print when you sell scrap gold. All sales are final. And our buyers of gold, at their discretion, reserve the right to refuse to buy any item. When you sell to R & L Gold Buyers, LLC, you are certifying and declaring, under penalty of perjury, that you are the lawful owner of the gold jewelry and gold scrap, that you are over the age of 18, and that you have the absolute authority to sell those goods. The buyers of gold will make a photocopy of your driver's license, and submit all the information to the appropriate department in the city where the sale occurred, as is required by law of the State of Arizona. Pretty simple. And safe. scrap gold

QUESTION:
How much should i pay for scrap gold?
Would like to buy scrap gold but do not really know how much I shoud pay for the gram (10,14 and 18k) Would appreciate a knowledgeable person advise.-
ANSWER:
It's about 4 an ounce and about .13 per gram(as of Dec. 24,2008).>In conlusion, you should by it for around .31 for the 10k, .825 for the 14k, and .35 for the 18k.<
It might also be a good idea to pay several percentiles less than these prices, otherwise you won't make too much money. No one should ever buy at market value for commodities.
Instructions on Method:
"Separate your scrap gold into their various karat fineness (i.e. 10k, 14k or 18k). You may need a magnifying glass to see the number inscribed on the piece....."
"If you have any gold coins, they may have a numismatic (coin) value above their metal value, based on age, rarity, and condition. Take it to a coin dealer; you may be able to get more money that way.
Determine the gram weight of each group by using a gram scale. If you can only weigh by the ounce, convert to grams by multiplying by 28.35 (e.g. 2 oz. = 2 x 28.35 = 56.7 grams).
Determine today's price of gold. You can find this on the Internet[3], [4] or in your local newspaper. Fine gold as of this writing is about 0.00 per troy ounce. (A troy ounce equals 31.1 grams. This never changes.) The price of gold fluctuates according to supply and demand.
Divide today's gold price by 31.1 to get today's gold price per gram.
Multiply by the fineness of the gold. For each group of gold, divide the karat by 24, then multiply that number by today's gold price per gram. For example, if you have 10KT gold and the current price of gold is .94 per gram (0.00 / 31.1), then the price of your scrap gold is .94 x .4167 = .06 per gram.10KT = 10/24 = .4167
14KT = 14/24 = .5833
18KT = 18/24 = .750Multiply the price per gram by the weight in grams. If you have 10 grams of 10KT gold and you calculated the price at .06 per gram, then your scrap gold is worth 10 x .06 = 0.59.
Examples
If you have 5.0 grams of 14KT scrap and gold is 0.00 today, then 0.00 divided by 31.1 equals .9389 multiplied by .5833 (14KT) equals .88 per gram. .88 multiplied by 5.0 grams equals .40.
Now let's say you have 15.3 grams of 10KT gold scrap. 0 divided by 31.1 equals .9389 multiplied by .4167 (10KT) equals .06 per gram. .06 multiplied by 15.3 grams equals 4.52."-wikihow.com

QUESTION:
How do gold refineries make money? When they buy our Gold what do they do with it to make a profit?
I need to know how do refineries make their money. When refineries buy people scrap gold and such. They melt it but then what do they do with it. how do they make a profit? Who do they resell to? Who buys from them?-
ANSWER:
Refineries are quite lucrative businesses. It's all really about services or processes. When you sell them your scrap gold they assay it, to find out exactly what percentages of what metals you provided them. They may charge you for that "service."
So there's profit #1.
Then they use acids to dissolve some metals and not others to purify the valuable metals. Suppose you sold them some 14K gold scrap. You actually sold them a metal alloy of 58% gold, 20-25% silver, and 12-7% copper by weight. Proportions vary by different alloys, but the Karat of gold is always a fraction of 24. 24K is 99.9% pure and 12K is 50% pure.
Anyway, they would pay for the gold, at less than 58% what gold traded for on the day they receive your shipment because the gold you sent was scrap, therefore of a lesser value because it needs to be processed (by them) to be of pure value again.
That's profit #2 and #3.
They pay a devalued rate for scrap, and in case you missed it, both silver and copper have a value, and are traded as commodities, but the refinery probably won't pay you for the other metals in the alloy. Though it may not be as big a number as the gold, they deal in volume and the little numbers add up.By the very process of removing the impurities they increase the value of the metal, and that is the main way they make their profit. Used metal has less value as pure, unless it has historical or sentimental value.
If a refinery has purified an alloy into it's purest state, the metal is in a more rare state. The laws of supply and demand follow. Since refineries are the main source of pure metal, they stand to make the first, and most, profit from the refining process.

QUESTION:
What are your experiences selling gold?
I keep seeing the Cash 4 Gold commercials on tv, plus local jewelers are advertising that they will buy scrap gold. I was wondering if anyone had specific examples of selling gold and how much they got. I have some pieces and I don't know if I should sell online (and which companies to avoid) go to a jeweler or if I should just pawn them. They don't have stones or anything in them so I would just want the gold worth. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Stay away from that Cash 4 Gold. I heard of a person who used them for cashing in 2 US per 1933 Gold Pieces. She received 0 cash for both. This was about 2 weeks ago. Problem is the dealer she bought them from 10 years ago would have given her 00 for both of those coins. Basically she got 1/3 of the total value. Cash 4 Gold is a scam pure and simple. Keep your gold. You may need it in the near future.

I guess I am going to take it to one of the many places that seem to be buying gold these days. It is not scrap it is in perfect condition. But I am sure they will buy it as scrap. It is 14k gold and weighs 156.1grams. I just checked todays spot price and its is 17 per troy ounce. So maybe that will save you a minute. I am looking to see gold as scrap, gold in new pieces, and silver as scrap and new pieces.I am going to different jewelers that buy gold to see what the best price is,I just want to know what I am up against and the real prices versus what they will pay.Any feedback to help me not get ripped off or sold for alot less than I should. Thanks-
ANSWER:
Prices change constantly, you can monitor them online:http://www.kitco.com
Dealers will charge you a small percentage over "spot", or pay you a small percentage under "spot", for items valued primarily for their gold or silver content. Rare items or finely worked jewely goes for even more. If you just want to buy and sell gold or silver, you might check coin dealers as well.

QUESTION:
how much should I pay for crap silver ?
I would like to buy scrap gold and silver as a venture-
ANSWER:
Scrap Value" If you see this check it your self.
Three easy stepsYou must KNOW EXACTLY what you are bidding on. Auctions listing Precious Metals for sale as "SCRAP" will include the weight 99% of the time. They list most weights in grams. But you will also see listings in ounces (oz), postal ounces, pounds (lb.), or even grains.
1. You need to convert this to an amount that easy for you to calculate the ACTUAL Scrap Value.
2. You need to know the ACTUAL % of content of Precious Metals.
3. You need the current spot of value of the precious metal.
I like to convert all of my weights to "TROY" ounces because the "Spot" amount on Precious Metals is based on weight in troy ounces. If an auction lists a weight in ounces ALWAYS assume it is NOT troy ounces. If you search ebay for scrap silver you will see many listings with weights in ounces. If you assume it is troy you will come up short by about 9%. It is an advantage to the seller that you will think that this is the amount of silver or gold that they have for sale. They boost the perceived value by 9% when they list it this way.
To convert from the listed weights use the following formulas;Make sure the items that are listed do NOT have any extra non-silver or gold weight, like stones. Large stones can add a lot of weight to gold.
Ounces, oz, or postal ounces. Take the listed amount and multiply by .91 to convert to TROY Ounces (t.oz.) 11 ounces x .91 = 10.01 troy ounces
Grams. Take the listed weight and divide by 31.103 to convert to TROY ounces (t.oz) 111 grams / 31.103 = 3.569 troy ounces.
Grains. Take the listed weight and divide by 480 to convert to TROY ounces (t.oz) 444 grains / 480 = .925 troy ounces.
Pounds (lb.). Take the listed weight and multiply by 16 to convert to ounces (t.oz) 11 pounds x 16 = 176 ounces. Now convert this to troy ounces by multiply by .91 176 x .91 = 160.16 TROY Ounces
Precious Metals %'s of ContentSilver. Most silver for sale on Ebay is STERLING (.925) 92.5%, 925/1000. There are others such as "Coin" silver 90% (US pre 65 silver coins), 800 or 80%, 835, or 83.5% and a very few items that are PURE SILVER .999 or 99.9%. Just so you understand PURE silver is always listed as .999
Gold. The most common gold is the USA is 14k. PURE Gold is 24k. Gold content is measured in "k". To get 14k they mix 14 parts of PURE gold with 10 parts other metals, as copper.
9k. 37.5% pure gold (Typically found in Europe)
10k. 41.66% pure gold
12k. Probably only gold plated. .001% or less gold
14k. 58.33% pure gold
16k. 66.66% Pure gold (Old Dental Gold, always treat this gold as 14k)
18k. 75% pure gold
22k. 91.66% Pure gold (Asian and Middle Eastern) Some of this 22k gold is marked .999 but will not test as 24k.
24k. 100% Pure gold (Only in certified) if not certified do not buy as 24k.

QUESTION:
Buying gold in foreign countries?
Hi,
I have a question; I have learned that the U. S. Dollar-though shrinking in value still has some decent momentum for its value in China. Therefore-- what about the price of gold in China? Can a person buy gold in China and get more for it because the US dollar still holds value there, or are there limitations to importing gold from China to the US? What about other countries as well ... any ideas on how to procure scrap gold and come out with a big profit? Thanks,.-
ANSWER:
Actually, the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Chinese Renminbi is fixed by the Chinese government. That creates the perception that the US Dollar is maintaining its value there. As you may be aware, the US has been putting pressure on China to sever that link, which would cause the Chinese Renminbi to appreciate rapidly against the dollar (which would also make Chinese goods more expensive in the US and make US goods cheaper in China.
In the mean time, buying gold there may not be a bad idea. I don't know of any restrictions on exporting gold from China. You may have to pay customs in the US, though.

Ebay problems, can he get the police?
I sold scrap gold for £400, good feedback all went well, so I bought more gold off ebay that said 14k gold real hallmarked. I sold it for over £500, I did not hear from the guy, he gave me bad feedback and said he is getting the police involved. He said we put a fake hallmark on there, as if I would know how to do that! he hasn't asked for a refund, no contact or anything just negative feedback with a threat about the police. My mum is really scared now as she listed it. can he get the police involved? when its his fault for not contacting or sending the gold back? plus a lot of places so if u leave bad feedback we will not refund u,?
UK........
for the first guy that answered me, I didnt no it was fake, the guy hasnt even asked for a refund, he kept the gold and threatened with the police in my feedback-
ANSWER:
I highly doubt the police will come knocking at your door. But if they DO, you will be able to prove you purchased this gold from someone else on eBay just to sell on and you had no idea it was not real.Get back on eBay and print off the listings (the auction YOU won for the gold, and the one you sold it) with pictures etc before it expires.
I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about.

QUESTION:
How do i find the carat of a gold coin?
If i mail it to a scrap gold buyer will they do it or can i do at home somehow? The solid Roman coin (not gold coated) came from a lot of grimey coins I bought and i found a gold but it has absolutely no detail and isnt worth anything but scrap.I ask this in the chem section because i thought i remembered being able to do this by chemistry equation but could be wrong.
despite what you folks may think, its 8 grams of gold, supposing it is the very lowest of quality, say 8ct, its 40 bucks of gold. Just by looking at it its obvious that it is a dark yellow and im guessing closer to 16ct.-

Dealers have methods to assay them by weight, density, and chemical tests; whether they'll give you an honest answer is another question entirely.

QUESTION:
How much does gold jewelry retain its value?
My husband is looking to sell a necklace he bought 12 years ago. It is 14k gold and weighs 28 grams. He bought it for 00 at a jewelry store. It has a unique lobster claw link and we have never seen anything like it elsewhere. He hasn't worn it in awhile and would like to sell it to get the our kids some presents for Christmas, but wants to make sure that he doesn't get ripped off. My question is this - I have researched online and found a formula for how much he should expect to make for 28 grams of 14k gold as scrap gold (4.17 is what it is worth and from what I can tell dealers will pay 80-90% so 1.34-2.75) - should we expect to get closer to what he bought it for seeing as it isn't really scrap?-

QUESTION:
Do you think it is possible that gold coins are being diluted?
I wonder if gold coins are being diluted like they were in the past? How would we really know?.
King Croesus of Lydia was the first to mint gold coins more than 2500 years ago. Subsequently many a country's ruler used the trick of debasing the value of gold coins by adding other metals to their content. If the purity of gold in coins was diluted in this way then inflation would occur - more coins would be required to buy goods. And.. of course , we would not be getting one ounce of gold in the coins that we think we are paying for.
Does anyone know if it's possible to test a coin to not only verify the ounces, but the quality of the gold. And now , there is so much scrap gold being sold, how would we know if it is filled inside with 14 or 18 carat recycled gold?-
ANSWER:
Easy.Determine the volume of the gold coin, find the weight and then calculate the two to determine the density. Then simply compare the density with that of pure gold.

QUESTION:
how much is my 9 carat gold necklace worth?
HiIve a 459 gram 9 carat gold necklace which im wanting to sell, ive had a value of £3400 for scrap value though it is definitely not scrap..Could anyone give me UK contact details of any refineries that they think would offer me at least £10 per gram as i no myself to buy this type of necklace would cost around £8000 of a jewellers.
-
ANSWER:
Ignore the jeweler price. Jeweler's markups are legendary. The scrap dealer is paying for the gold in the necklace, and he is out to make a profit. Let's take a look at that.you can check spot prices anytime here:
http://www.kitco.com/market/bp_charts.html
Spot price for 24K is* £22.393 per gram, multiply that by 9/24 because your gold is 9K.
I get £8.39 per gram so your 459 gram necklace has a spot value of approximately £3854*
* Spot prices change rapidly - check again before you buy or sell.
That scrap value is actually not that bad, you would expect to sell at a discount to spot value.
Certainly nobody is likely to offer you more than the spot value. You might do better in a private sale if you can find a buyer.

Ive got around 5 gold rings and various gold necklaces in good condition from my dear departed Grandmother which are all made of 14ct gold and a number of Diamonds. QUESTION:
Where could I sell my alexandrite ring?
I have a 14k gold ring with 15 alexandrite small round stones and several very small diamonds. The bring is aprox 8 years old but has never been worn. I was given the ring as a present but was recently advised as to how rare alexandrite is and its gem potentitals to change colour etc. I want to sell the ring but am having trouble finding anyone to buy the ring for anything other than scrap gold metal value. The ring cost £460 new and I therefore refuse to give this away for £30. Could anyone point me in the direction of a gem lover who would appreciate the alexandrite or to someone who would be interested in buying? I can provide photos if necessary.-
ANSWER:
don't believe the previous poster. Of course Alexandrite is very precious and expensive, but it all depends on the quality as well. How strong is the color change etc. Considering the original buying price, I am sorry to say, the stones can't be great and could even be synthetic. Do you have any documentation about the ring/gemstones?Your best bet is a private sale, advertise in the newspaper, on etsy etc.

QUESTION:
What should I do with a broken ring of sentimental value?
I have a gold signet ring which is broken. It wasn't expensive or anything - just from Argos - so not great or anything quality either. My granny bought it for me when I was about 15, the final Christmas before she died.If it was just any old ring, I'd probably sell it for scrap or something, but it's got sentimental value because my granny gave it to me. So I'm wondering what to do with it?
Obviously I can just keep it as it is, but I'm worried that it'll end up getting lost or something.
I toyed with selling it for scrap and then using the money to buy something else to remember my granny by - but that doesn't seem right, and anyway, I'd hardly get much for it, so I'd be buying something tiny in the end!
I also thought about getting it made into a pendant or something. Does anyone know how much that costs and how to get it done?
Or does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks!

ANSWER:
You could keep a memory box.
Like put it in there, put photos of her and other things with sentimental value. Decorate it with the colours she likes and little things you guys have collected. Inside you could put stuff she liked to do, like if she liked to read put a page of a book in there, or if she liked to knit put yarn of knitting needles in it. Keep it safe so you can come back and look in it.Sounds corny but its really nice.

QUESTION:
Why are most of the mommies (and daddies) in the parenting sections of YA so um..."thrifty"?
I sometimes ask questions about products/items that I am looking to get for my daughter, to see if anyone has something similar to give me their opinions on it; or to find out if there is possibly something better out there. I don't mind saving money, believe me. However when it comes to things like bigger christmas toy items, or shoes, or even clothes; I really like to get new things. Not because I'm snobby just because I am 1 a germ nut so I really cant stand the idea of wearing something someone else wore ect. But 2 because something like a big electric riding car, or a toy kitchen I know that it will all work and be nice for my daghter to grow with. But usually the second anyone answers it's to leave some scolding remark about how I can get a "cheaper one that is just as good" or "get it at a garage sale". I understand that often cheaper things can be just as nice, and I know garage sales can have great finds. And I dont mind helpful tips, but people seem so dead set on here that things should be either cheap, or used, or both. Anyone else? I mean I dont think I am superior to anyone or anything, but I like nice new stuff; and thank god I am capable of providing it to my daughter. I understand not everyone can, and maybe it is in their insecurity that they bought something that was "used" or second hand that they get so upset; any thoughts? I just dont know why people care if the swing I buy for my baby is new and made of 14K gold and cost 0000, or if it is made of old scrap fabric that I sewd together myself.
I don't know I mean I like saving money, who dosen't? But at the same time there are certain things that I just feel like they should be new (only if possible of course). Like I said before to me clothing is a germ kinda thing, and the same as bigger more expensive items that could have possible problems that cause them not to work. Like I have bought plenty of toys for our daughter to keep at each of her grandparents that were either out of box sales, or from yard sales.
I know they have chemicals however most of hers are organic or bamboo. And I prewash everything
Ida: I have nothing bad to say for your story. I think it is wonderful that you did the best for her that you could. I would never begrudge anyone for buying something used or even grabbing something from the trash (hope u used lots of lysol tho LOL kidding). I can totally understand where you were comming from. But I thank god that I dont have to go through that. And since I dont then I just think its unfair that I am rediculde. I understand things are really bad for most people, and although we arent raking in the dough; I can still get her new stuff. I dont get on here and tell people "o my go buy all of your children mercedes convertibles for their 5th bday". I mean come on a decent toy kitchen that was 5 and all the answers were go to yard sales, or to make it myself. Thats not even rediculous for a christmas gift. And that will likely be her only real gift; just a few other accessories and clothes.-
ANSWER:
I think some of it stems from people who almost feel superior to those who pay retail-reverse snobbery... I also think some people genuinely CAN'T afford really pricy items and they may feel bad...
I am like you. I would never buy secondhand clothing for my children or myself. I love a good bargain, but I buy retail and there is definately a quality difference between Wal Mart and Gap...I think all in all people need to live and let live. If someone wants to spend more than another deems "necessary", what business is it of theirs unless you specifically are asking "do you think this is overpriced?". If you aren't asking for opinions on the price but on the quality of an item, people should be answering your question and leaving the other stuff out...
And sorry, but as far as "make it yourself", sometimes that can be more costly in the end-not only the materials but your time.
Nobody should make another feel bad for buying retail. In fact, it's rather hypocritical. Retail is simply a way to buy a product. Yard sales are as well. Who is anyone to degrade another for their particular preferred place to purchase an item? As long as your aren't racking up debt on your credit cards to buy any item, then where you shop is perfect for you.

QUESTION:
How much would be a good price to haggle?
I noticed a very unusual gold necklace in second hand jewellery store and I'm interested in purchasing it, especially as I know that there's another serious buyer who would like to try and melt it down.
It's a high quality piece of jewellery 18K with a good (world renowned) name attached to it and weighs in at 142 grams (solid gold)I've checked around and if I was trying to buy something similar to it new from the original retailer it would cost me ,250 - ,500.
I've calculate the scrap value of the necklace to be ,237.The seller is pushing that it's a "unique" piece and "vintage" therefore worth a lot more; the price set is ,500.
There's no way that I'm paying that much for it, retail prices are inflated anyway but then to inflate it again is beyond wishful thinking. I know that the other buyer will offer a lot less than that and probably less than me as they're only interested in the gold value, not the name.
I'm keen to haggle with this seller but this time I'm not sure what to offer. Typically I offer 50% the asking price and work from there with it usually ending up at 35% the asking price, but I know that jewelry is the special exception to the rule as the Western market always over-inflates it cripplingly.
The seller also seems well versed in trading by weight rather than a set marked price, they've listed the weight per gram on all the items. What would be a good price to try haggling for?
-
ANSWER:
You usually start by offering 50% asking price and then you get it for only 35%?! Wow, you're much better at bargaining than I am! I guess you mean 35% OFF.If the other buyer will pay only K for the gold, and you can get a similar item new for K AND you neither appreciate nor acknowledge the suppposed antique value, then i would offer .5K first. Then, he has to decide whether to hold out for the vintage collector.
The relevant points are 50% new value = K. That would be what you would offer a private seller who was offering it second-hand.

QUESTION:
my ex girlfriend compltley used me for a year and now im afraid i'll never meet a good girl?
my story is pretty pathetic on my part. i was 18 when i asked out my ex who was 16, we dated from august 08 til july 09.
alllllll of my friends hated her, and my friends moms, and my sisters did not like her. they always called her a gold digger, fat, and said why is someone as good looking as me dating her. i saw her beauty, i think she is the prettiest girl alive and no body else really saw it.however she cheated on me 4 times, compared me to other guys, never once bought me anything, ever... spent 600 bucks on her for xmas when i was unemployed and used my last of my savings for her.
broke up with me the week of my bday, forced me to buy her a promise ring, got mad i made her a scrap book, constantly lied to me.
she was my first kiss, first girlfriend, first love ,first date, everything. i wasnt the first everything for her. she knew i was a nice guy, and it hurts cuz its been a while since the breakup. she got a new boyfriend right after the break up and he is a nice guy like myself. it sucks, i feel helpless and i feel as if i was never loved or cared for during the 11 months we were together.
my question is, has any guys ever felt as if they were never loved or cared for in their relationship with their ex, then SOMEHOW, they found a good girl and fell in love again? how amazing is the feeling of KNOWING your loved??
and will my ex get mad that i get a new girlfriend even though she is horrible to me and STILL calls me everyday even tho she has a new boyfriend?
she calls almost every night cuz she misses me... and wants to see a movie alone together maybe sometime.
dont get me wrong.. i miss the hell out of her, i wish i could have her back, but i know it wont work cuz she is horrible to me. and i cant trust her. she is my first everything. i ignored her for 2 full weeks before she saw me at church and said hi and called me that night and i answered.

QUESTION:
How can I make them understand?
My Grandma, especially, keeps letting my dog lick the babies high chair thing before cleaning it. That, or he gets scraps from the floor all the time. I'm not so worried about the scraps, at the moment, but I'm more worried about him thinking people food is his food to.You see, my brother is tall for his age, but holds his food by the dogs face. If we aren't watching, he will take it, and I don't blame him. He usually gets it anyway...I've been trying to explain to them that feeding him a lot of people food is not good for him.
They don't listen.
Also, they keep buying him food like Purina, even though I offer to pay for Solid Gold. How can I get my mom to understand that the food DOES make a difference and buying the 'expensive' brand is cheaper in the long run?
I see feeding a already overweight dog table scraps not so good.Anyhoo, he has to eat more on other brands such as Purina. On brands made with better ingrdients, he won't have to receive so much for his required weight. It's also healthier.
-
ANSWER:
Well, you are getting some crappy answers, huh? This is a tough situation. Your mom probably grew up in the era where dogs were traditionally kept outside, and fed whatever was left over. The role of dogs as pets has changed to dogs as family. Your mom will probably never change her mind...sorry.

QUESTION:
How long for compost?
II started my compost just as a pile of organic material (grass clippings, kitchen scraps etc) directly on the ground in a corner of my yard. Yesterday after much research I bought some chicken manure and added that as well. As I mixed it, I could feel heat being generated which I know is a good thing. But how long will it all take to breakdown completely into useable compost (black garden gold) and is there anything I can do to speed it up? Add worms, more manure etc…? All suggestions appreciated. Happy Cinco De Mayo!!!!-
ANSWER:
If the compost isn't covered up, cover it. It will generate more heat and compost faster. Also, make sure you have scrunched up newspaper or cardboard in there for air pockets.
Turn the compost over every month or so, putting the new material at the bottom and the older stuff nearer the top.

ANSWER:
another thing to consider is all the waste buying everything new creates. If you think about when your grandparents were first married - They probably got a toaster for a wedding gift. When that toaster broke - they got it fixed. Now toasters are so cheaply made that they break all the time and we just run out and buy new ones and 10000 toasters sit in a dump taking up space and polluting our water. Look at what's hapening to the world now because of the last 20 years of not caring about all the waste we make... what do you think it will be like in another 20 years when your kids and grand kids are trying to sustain life....and then their kids and grandkids? pretty selfish to just think of the hear and now...ourselves!!!Leave no footprint!
