Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

How To Sell Diamonds

Selling gold online should be easy and hassle free. You have chunks of jewelry, you send them in for evaluation, knowing that the offer you will get depends on the following:

  • The gold day's value, known as the London PM Gold Fix
  • The Purity of your gold, measured with karats

Easy, right? But what happens if your gold jewelry has diamonds attached to it? Well, that's a different story. Selling diamonds is more than just weighing. Every diamond is special and every diamond has its own qualities. So how can you tell the price?

Grading diamonds has to be done on an individual basis and properly evaluated by a certified gemologist who will establish fair market value. Demand is also an important factor in determining what your diamond is worth.

Here's an easy way to understand diamond value. aThe 4 Cs of Diamondsa is how we like to call it in the industry. The 4 Cs are:

  • Cut - refers to your diamond's general look. Simply look at the finish, see if the diamond catches the eye and if it flashes in the light.
  • Clarity - describes the purity of the diamond when F stands for flawless.
  • Color - a fine diamond shouldn't have any color to it. The range starts from colorless and goes up to yellow.
  • Carat - is the weight, subdivided by 100 points.

Every one of these factors can change the value of your stone. People tend to think that Clarity is the most important character in a diamond, but it is the color and cut that make a diamond truly unique.

Now that you know more about your diamond, you probably wonder how to sell the diamonds without getting scammed. The best thing to do, would be selling your diamond inside the family or to your friends. This works for all jewelry and promises you a safe transaction which relies not only upon the value of your stone, but also on sentimental value and look value of the jewelry.

If no one wants to buy it from you, find a reliable diamond buyer. A good dealer should be located within a diamond district and understand the complexities of supply and demand. When you try to sell your diamonds on the street, you'll probably come across jewelry stores that have limited cash flow but are eager to buy. Remember that when dealing with such a business you might not get the greatest return on your stones. Never settle for less than 60% of your diamond's worth!

Costco does this, as well as a few others. If they appraise for double, why do they sell it for half the value???

    Thanks in advance,

    • ANSWER:
The standard value of diamonds at full retail is 1/2 the advertised price if you pay full price. Understand? It is the industry standard to say that .00 diamonds are worth 0. You are paying full retail at the 50 percent mark.

    • ANSWER:
You can submit your store to the search engines. Also, I would create an "entry" page hosted on another site. Then you can promote that page with conventional internet marketing such as Yahoo paid advertising and google adwords. You may also want to check out Overstock.com, amazon.com and other sites that allow you to sell your items.

  5. QUESTION:
    How to robbers sell diamonds?
I was watching on TV some show about a guy who stole a big diamond worth street value at like 400 million dollars. It was fiction, but what I'm wondering is how do these robbers first sell the diamond, because someone doesn't walk around with 400 million in their pocket to buy a big diamond, and the robber wouldn't pawn it or give it back to the rightful owner, and second, how would they get away with it, because some rich dude would be like "oh yea, this person sold it to me" so just wondering, i didn't actually steal a diamond.

  6. QUESTION:
How do you sell diamond jewelry that you bought from a jewelry store but that you no longer want?
I have this diamond ring that I want to sell. I don't want to take it to a pawn shop because they won't give me what its worth. But I don't know any other alternatives. Do you think the store that I bought it from will buy it back? Please Help!

    • ANSWER:
Ebay it! Just make sure you describe it accuratly, and be able to prove that its real.

  7. QUESTION:
HAVE YOU BOUGHT from bluenile.com? Why do retailers sell DIAMONDS for less than the appraisal price?
I received a diamond ring from my bf and it cost about 0 canadian dollars/0 USD, but the appraisal made by a gemologist at blue nile set the ring's value at 0 USD.
Why would they sell it to me for 0USD when they appraised it for 0 USD?
Secondly, has anyone purchased from bluenile.com, I was just wondering how your experience was with them.

    • ANSWER:
You can almost always find diamonds for less than what they are appraised for. The true value of the diamond is not always what they're sold for. It's kind of like going to a car dealership and getting a ,000 car for ,000. They're still making money off of you, but the original value of the car was ,000.

As for Blue Nile, they're an excellent choice. I run a free diamond search service (see the link in the source box below) and Blue Nile is often at the top. In fact, I bought my own wife's engagement ring there.

  8. QUESTION:
how much less can you sell diamond from the Appraised Value?
I have a diamond ring for sell, Color GH, 1 Carat Diamond on a 14k Gold ring. Clarity is I1 and its very good cut. Its appraised value is 3600, but i want to know how much i can sell it for? how much less can i sell it from the appraised value. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
about 25% of that appraised amount. it will sell at a retail shop for about 50% of appraised value. and a private party can sell it for even less.

you get the idea the appraised value is meaningless? if retail only sells for 50% of appraised value then why is this the valuation process.

    • ANSWER:
Nothing really fishy it's just a hit or a miss and obviously Beyonce missed the mark with her latest album. It doesn't really matter though she's making bank either way. The longer your in the game= the faster you fade out. It's just how it is.

Take them to a local, reputable jeweler for an appraisal. Ask them how to sell them. DO NOT do anything online, too much bad can happen, like you send them somewhere and never hear back and don't get any money for them. Don't be duped. Keep them in your possession at all times until you have the money in your hands.

  16. QUESTION:
Can a jewelry store sell real diamonds/gold rings on sale?
For example if the market value of a ring is 00 because of the diamond and gold on it, how can a jewelry store sell it on sale for sale 00?

Thinking about Kay Jewelers compared to a local jeweler. Kay Jewelers has an anniversary sale so I wonder if its a deal or is the Kay Jewelers stuff a lower quality?

    • ANSWER:
Most jewelry in jewelry stores is marked up about 200%- or more. Therefore, they can take off quite a bit and still make a profit.

Diamonds are hard when it comes to pricing. The value has to do with the color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Unless you are an expert, it would be difficult to determine if one diamond is worth more than another. A one carat diamond could be less valuable than a 1/2 carat diamond of a much higher quality.

Then there is the price of gold. It has gone up recently so if the gold was purchased a few years ago, the jeweler paid a lot less than current price for it.

This is really a job for an expert - or a jeweler that you really trust.

  18. QUESTION:
Where can i sell geo diamonds?
i have a lot of geo diamonds the are straight from the actual rock. i want to sell them. does anyone know where i can sell them? If so, how much $ do u think i could get from selling it?

    • ANSWER:
I heard there is one company in the world called De Beers that regulates and distributes the planet's diamond supply. They are the ones who actually mine, shape, and polish the stones. Unless you have a good quantity of the rock it would probably cost you more money to dig the diamonds from the blocks and cut and polish them, I would be surprised if you could break even let alone make a profit from doing all that.

  19. QUESTION:
How could it be possible for a company overseas to sell gold & diamonds cheaper than here? They swear not fake
The sellers profess that the gold is solid gold, NOT plated, and that their diamonds are earth mined diamonds, yet offered at such huge discounts.....if they are truly real......how could such prices be possible.....i would absolutely love some answers...thank you to ALL of you in advance for your help:)

    • ANSWER:
If something sounds too good to be true, it's probably not.

Gold prices are remarkably similar all over the world. They go up and down constantly, but nobody is getting it much cheaper in some other country, unless they are cheating somehow. Don't buy any gold-plated lead bricks.

How to buy a 3ct solitare at an auction?
I am interested in buying a 3-4carat diamond solitaire and I wanted to know how to buy it at auction? What auctions sell diamonds online? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Unless you have some knowledge about diamonds you can get taken to the cleaners unless the stone has a gemologists statement as to the color, cut, clarity and size. A 3 ct diamond can be of such poor quality( because of color or inclusions )as to make it nearly worthless. You need some serious education as to what to be looking for before you make any offer. Never buy on someones verbal word and always have it checked out by a certified and registered gemologist.

  28. QUESTION:
i want to sell my diamonds , how to sell them?
hi i have some diamonds , which i got as business gift , i want to sell them, how to sell them

    • ANSWER:
First of all business gifts are normally not supposed to be more than so I don't know that you have diamonds to sell. You could first take them to a jeweler to have them looked at to see if they are real and what they'd be appraised at. When a person buys a diamond (let's say it's an engagement ring) the diamond is not worth that much but the gold ring is worth a few dollars but a person pays for where the business is located (like their rent in a mall) so diamond rings aren't that expensive, so you might be disappointed in what you get for your business gift.

There are places today that buy silver, gold, diamonds, rings, and junk dental gold but since they take a cut you won't get what you think you will out of it.
And, always remember that you advertising diamonds might make some burgler think you have something valuable when in reality you don't. So this is a sensitive issue.
Why not just put them in your safety deposit box and save them for your wife or girlfriend or mother.

  32. QUESTION:
Where and how to ebay sellers get their cheap diamond jewelry from?
These sellers are selling diamond jewelry thousands of dollars under their retail price and for the price I thought would be the wholesale price? How and where do they buy them so cheaply?

    • ANSWER:
They buy it strait from china. Much of it is suspect quality and may be fake.

That being said, jewelry can have a huge markup. Not many people realize that if the sticker says 0, it probably cost the store about -. But the stores are VARs. They do things like warranties, gift boxing and free cleanings for life. You pay for service from a jeweler, not the gold/ diamonds.

If you want cheaper jewelery, especially diamonds, go to a pawn shop. The biggest issue with pawn shop jewelery is that it is used so softer stones may be worn/ scratched. Diamonds don't wear or scratch so they always look like new (metals are buffed and cleaned) and they are plentiful because it seems like there are certain groups of people who are financially unstable and don't understand economics feel like it is a good idea to o buy some ice the first time they have money left over at the end of the week.

      0.93-Carat Round Diamond
This Very Good-cut, E-color, and VS1-clarity diamond comes accompanied by a diamond grading report from the GIA

  46. QUESTION:
How much can i sell my Diamond for?
    1.00ctw
    shape: princess
    color: J - K
    clarity: I2

what is the price range i should be looking for if i am trying to sell this diamond?

    • ANSWER:
Right now, with our current economy, selling a diamond will be tough. I would say depending on the location the diamond (no mounting) would retail for 00-00. With that in mind, on the second hand market you can expect to receive 50-60% of the original value. So if you can get 0-00 you'll be doing well.

I would suggest asking friends and family first, then try your luck with a jeweler who will try to sell it for you. If someone sells your diamond on consignment they may be able to sell it for close to retail. They will then take their commission and the rest is yours. This is a longer process, it could take a month or a year, but its usually the best way to retain the value of your diamond.

      800-1200

  48. QUESTION:
What or how is the best way to sell my diamond ring?
I have a very good quality engagement ring as well as a beautiful tanzanite ring that are not being worn and I need money desperately. I'm sure I first have to start with new appraisals since it has been around six years since I have gotten one. They are both rings that I love but have too much heartache attached. The money I receive could help me a lot. I don't want to go through a big procedure to sell them. I also would be sceptical to auction them due to not being guaranteed of a good selling price. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has gotten excellent results in receiving top dollar for jewelry. I suppose I should have done this before Christmas. Maybe I can catch some Valentine's Day Romantics. For personal reasons, that would be a very appropriate time to remove these rings from my life. Save a heart, help me do this.

    • ANSWER:
i would keep the tanzanite because that supply is running low and the price will increase daily. the ring, i would sell it to the jewler you got it from or go to a couple of jewlers and see which one has the best price.
