Most advertising campaigns by De Beers feature their famous slogan "A Diamond is Forever." Consequently, women seldom sell a diamond and often feel uncomfortable buying diamonds previously owned by other women. There is a sentimental aspect to diamonds that is very different from other tangible assets like boats, houses or automobiles. However, there are occasions when consumers need to sell their diamonds and, unlike the used car market, there is not a well-developed method for consumers to sell their diamonds.
As a consumer, you face some unique challenges when trying to get the best price for your diamond in a safe and comfortable manner. Your starting point is to know exactly what you are selling. This is much easier if the diamond has a grading report from a major laboratory like the GIA or AGS. You have more of a challenge if there is no formal grading report. In this case, you need to find an independent appraiser who can evaluate the diamond and determine its quality and potential value.
Once you know your diamond's specifications, you can find the current retail asking price by checking with online retailers to see what similar diamonds are selling for in today's retail market. It is unlikely you will be able to get the going retail price for your diamond. Selling your diamond at 80% to 90% of that amount would make it sell quicker. Be realistic about your expectations. The lowest cost online retailers, not the expensive jewelry stores with double the price, set the value of your diamond.
You now know your target price and simply have to figure out how to find the right buyer for your diamond. There are several options available to sell your diamond and you need to determine which is best for maximizing your money and safety while minimizing your time and effort.
Your first thought might be to go to the closest jewelry store or pawnshop and sell them the diamond. The key to remember here is that they do not need your diamond. They can get all the diamonds they want on the wholesale market. The only reason they will buy your diamond is if the price is a fraction of the wholesale price. They hope you need the money bad enough to take 25%-50% of what you could be getting for your diamond elsewhere. They might offer you a little more if you "trade up" to something in their display case. However, this often results in you paying more for the new diamond and receiving less for your diamond than if you sold it elsewhere.
Several online brokers specialize in buying diamonds and estate jewelry from consumers. They typically have you ship the diamond to them so they can determine the amount they will pay you. All too often, this amount is much less than their preliminary estimate so you must either pay the return shipping, or accept their price. If your main priority is getting money fast, this is a valid option. If your main priority is getting top dollar for your diamond, there are better selling methods available to you.
Auctions like eBay are very popular for selling jewelry items but there is so much low quality jewelry listed, it is hard for potential buyer to find your quality diamond. You are competing with jewelry retailers whose entire business is selling on eBay so they are experts at writing the descriptions (often with exaggerated quality), taking impressive pictures and shipping their items. Even if a bidder does find your item, the odds of getting your target price are slim to nil because other retailers are advertising items with similar descriptions for about half the amount you want. Notice I did not say they are advertising similar quality, just similar descriptions. Do a search for diamond rings with GIA grading reports and you will see the vast majority of diamond rings have paperwork from sources you have never heard of before.
Other effective ways to find a buyer are classified ads in local newspapers and bulletin boards at church or work. The challenge is reaching enough people to find at least one buyer willing to pay your price. You have to be careful when doing this kind of transaction, especially if selling to a stranger. Do the transaction in a safe place and be sure you have a valid form of payment. You do not want to hand over your diamond and end up with a phony cashiers check or bad personal check.
Some jewelry stores and online retailers will sell your diamond on consignment. Online retailers with a local presence have an advantage in that they have large numbers of diamond shoppers on their website plus walk in traffic that can see your diamond in person. They also have lower overhead and prices so you can get a bigger share of the selling price. With jewelry stores often marking up prices over 100%, your share is likely to be less than half of the selling price.
Just be sure to get a written description of the item you are giving on consignment and the minimum amount you will accept for your diamond. All too often sellers are not being able to get their jewelry items back from a store or only receive a fraction of the amount they expected from the sale. However, if you have patience and a low priced, trustworthy retailer to broker your diamond, you have an excellent chance of getting an excellent price for your diamond without the hassle and safety issues of selling it yourself.

QUESTION:
what is the right way to sell your jewelry?
i want to sell somthing on ebay but im not sure how to sell it.
what would be the right way to sell my jewelry.-
ANSWER:
eBay is one way to go, but you might also just try setting up your own website. It's free and easy to do with Microsoft Office Live, and you can even accept payments with paypal. With your own site, you can give your store the look you want. It's challenging to drive traffic to your site at first, but if you get some good links, get listed in directories like indie friendly and bust girl wide web, you should start getting hits. Plus you can tell all your friends and family to help spread the word, too!
You could also open a shop at etsy.com, where traffic is already high, but they charge for listing as well as selling your items.
hope this helps!

QUESTION:
selling handmade jewelry to stores-display question?
When selling your jewelry to a retail shop, do you also supply the display set up? or do they set up how they want it in their store?-
ANSWER:
It is going to vary from store to store what the display setup is. Some stores/galleries completely control the display and provide all of the materials needed for the set-up. Some stores/galleries expect the artist to supply the display items for their jewelry and to participate in the set-up.In my experience the most positive stores/galleries approach the set-up of displays as a collaborative effort between them and the artist. While as artists we do like to control everything, we need to remember that the store/gallery owner and employees know the merchandise and their customers and have a lot to contribute to display.
Make certain that the responsibilities for set-up and any guidelines/rules for displaying your pieces are in the agreement signed by you and the store/gallery.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
How do you best price your handmade jewelry for a fast sell and profit?
all handmade by me, materials, price of, and time spent on vary greatly. also, there is transportation and display costs. an example of what i sell is : 16 inch onyx and black agate necklace with a teardrop mother of pearl pendant, 18 inch 3 strand turquoise colored seed beaded necklace with a handmade one of a kind 30mm sterling silver dolphin and hoop pendant. both took about 2.4 hours to make.-
ANSWER:
Normally, price is associated with quality, especially when it comes to handmade jewelry. You don't want to price your jewelry too low because people will think maybe something's wrong with it. Fast sell and good profit are almost like oxymorons when it comes to jewelry. A lot of time and money goes into making it, so don't underprice your jewelry. Of course, this means it might not sell as fast. You can calculate both wholesale and retail price. Labor is the amount you want to pay yourself per hour. Depending on your experience it can be anywhere from and up per hour. A common pricing formula is the following.
Wholesale price = (Materials X 2) + (labor X # of hours)
Retail price = wholesale price X 1.50(50% markup)The markup over the wholesale price can be as high or as low as you want but 50% is pretty common. The display and transportation costs cannot be part of the price since those are business expenses. You have to markup your jewelry to the extent that the price will cover all your expenses plus leave you with a decent profit.

QUESTION:
Is there a way to tell if your jewelry is real gold or costume jewelry? Some kind of test to do at home?

QUESTION:
How and where to officially register your design?
I'm looking for a solution: if you design something, such as, a car, furniture, jewelry, clothing.......etc. and before introducing it to the public, how and where to officially register your design first to protect your own design patent and intellectual property? And, will you have to register in every country that you may sell your product to?
Thank you!
-
ANSWER:
Some things are patentable/copyrightable, some are not. I don't know where you're from, but in the US the place to go is the Patent and Trademark office http://uspto.gov If you have questions look for the "contact" linkYou need to know that ideas in themselves can not be protected. To have a product protected It can be trademarked in it's associated with a particular brand. For instance, only Ford can produce and sell a Mustang. This is called "Branding." The same with designer clothing and accessories. The other stuff, there is always an implied copyright. If you can prove you came up with it first (if ever you need to go to court) then the jufge must rule in your favor. Ideas cannot be protected. For instance if you wanted to start a new type of business people would be free to enter the market and be your competitor.
The thing to remember about protection is is the old addage:
.00 for the prototype
,000 for the patent
,000,000 to protect it
In other words is a large company decided that they like your product and decided to copy it you would have to hire a lawyer, pay him, then take the company to court. Assuming that you're not as rich as Ford, they can afford to go extend the lawsuit for years (which is fairly common) until you run out of money to pay attornies. Then it's "Hey, tough luck. There is no way to stop us from stealing your concept because you can't afford to defend it."You should register in different countries, but some countries have no copyright laws. China comes to mind. You've heard how they make bootleg copies of music and movies and sell them around the globe. If you sell something in a country like that you would have lots of competitors who would copy your product.

QUESTION:
Selling jewelry to stores...?
How much to you sell your jwelry for when you sell it to stores? Do you sell it for the regular price you would charge the customer? Or do you sell for less?
Let's say a store is willing to buy hairclipf from you that you usually sell for .00 and they cost [FAQ-QUESTION].50 to make. At what price does the store buy your hairclips from you?-
ANSWER:
Since stores buy in quantity and expect to make a profit ...you sell to them at what is called "Discount" or "Wholesale" prices .....Since you would probably be selling 12 pieces per item .... you would charge about 50% of your cost to allow for material and labor .... so if it cost you 50 cents to make , you'd charge like 75 cents per item ....
In some upper scale store ; you might get away with doubling your cost and charging .00 for a item that cost 50 cents to make .....
BUT: you can never charge a store or retailer the price that you sell to the general public ..... Don't forget; the stores have to make a profit also .

QUESTION:
Jewelry & Purse Parties?
Hello,
I was going to sign up with a direct selling company for 0 that sells purses and jewelry through home parties. My question is this...Has anyone ever bought jewelry & purses wholesale themselves and did their own home parties? Is it really necessary to sign up with a company to do this? If you have cut out the middle man (direct sales companies) and you started your own business yourself how did you mark up your items after buying wholesale? Where did you sell your items?
Any advice that you have to offer is greatly appreciated. Many Blessings
-
ANSWER:
There are several advantages to having the middle man. They have all the inventory you need. If you're on your own, you need to buy all the inventory and maintain it in your home. That's a lot of upfront cost and storing it all can be quite a hassle. The middle man takes care of that for you. Also the name of the company will also help. People will recognize and search you out because you are a part of a particular company. These direct sales companies really help the small business owner get started. When I started with Scentsy, I was given all the tools I needed, including my own website. If you're out on your own, you will need to build all that up. It's going to be a lot of out pocket, which can be risky.
Another thing to think about is continuous sales. When I was researching companies, I wanted to be sure I found a product that people would continue to come back for more. I didn't think that was the case with purses or jewelry. Most people who attend those parties only buy something out of guilt to the hostess. With my business, my customers seek me out. When they are out of wax, they call. I get continuous business from my customers because they want the product.
Those are my thoughts on it. I wish you well and hope it all works out for you.

QUESTION:
why are there so many places out there buying all your gold/silver jewelry all of a sudden?
i noticed lately that so many places are looking to buy your old gold/silver jewelry at decent prices. i also see a lot ads in the papers/periodicals that are looking for the same thing. whats the deal? if i wanted to sell back some of mine, what should i look out for? how do i know i am getting what i should and not ripped off?-
ANSWER:
Look out for companies that ask you to mail your gold in.
Clark Howard from CNN.com has a scam artilcle on this.
You mail in your gold and you get about 1/3 to 1/4th of the value you would get at any pawn shop or local jewelry buyer.
If you want to sell, stay away from anything online.
Leave it for the dummies to mail in their gold and accept whatever offer they get - they will never know if they got a good price or not.
Get three estimates from local stores and sell to the highest bidder.

QUESTION:
How do you make your own jewelry?
I was thinking about making my own jewelery and selling them. Does anyone do that? Is it fun or is it really hard to do?-
ANSWER:
Making jewelry is fun and a great hobby or way to make some extra money. It will take patience and practice to perfect it... like anything worthwhile. I suggest that if you are serious about it you get the tools you will need to make jewelry. These tools are a good pair of setting pliers and calipers preferably digital calipers as they are much more accurate. While wire wrapping is very artsy, it is difficult to make a piece that will hold up and last over time unless you are a skilled wire wrap artist. A great way to start making jewelry is to get settings and start practicing there with lab created gems or cubic zirconia, since if you crack or chip the gem it won't be a huge loss since they are inexpensive. Starting with snap-tite settings is a great way to get a feel for it, they are fairly simple to do and virtually anyone can learn to use them. A great place to buy snap-tite settings is
http://www.jamminggems.com/If you'd rather go with a cast setting that is sturdier and has a lot more design options go with a Pre-notched setting, so the notches in the prongs are already made for you. Otherwise you will have to debur the prongs yourself with a tool. These settings can also be found on Jamming Gems website. They also have a few videos showing you the proper way to set a gemstone into these settings, http://www.jamminggems.com/learn-how-to-set-videos.aspx/
Hope this helps! Have fun and good luck if you decide to make jewelry!

QUESTION:
Does anyone know of a good way to sell handmade jewelry?
I've tried eBay, but I didn't get even one bid. Has anyone ever sold handmade jewelry at fairs or festivals before? If so, tell me how it worked out for you. Was it worth your time and effort?-
ANSWER:
I'd say re-try Ebay but also get yourself a LiveJournal account and promote the heck out of yourself. I always see people on LJ selling stuff. Getting a booth at a fair or festival is a good idea also, but you have to put up some money initially. Another good idea might be to try to have a "jewelry party". Kind of like a tupperware party, but with your jewelry instead. You can make up order forms and small catalogs too. Good luck!

QUESTION:
jewelry business?
i like desiging jewelry. on paper that is. how do i get my design from paper to tangible? can you sell your designs to other jewelers? or would they just steal the idea. i just want to know how to get started. thanx!-
ANSWER:
.
It depends on what type of jewelry you are designing? Is it bead jewelry? Metal smithing? Wire work?Designing is the major part of jewelry making, but before you can sell your designs you need to make some samples to make sure the designs work (You could design a beautiful and unique piece of wearable art but if it is too heavy, too long, not long enough, too clunky, too chunky, too fragile, parts that easily catches on things or threads from the clothes or the wearer, extremely difficult to get on or off, or can fall off the wearer to easily then it is not really considered functional jewelry)
If you enjoy designing more than actually making jewelry pieces then consider designing and creating jewelry kits and/or patterns. To learn how to design and market jewelry making kits check out this site:

QUESTION:
is there a place i can sell my unwanted gauged jewelry?
I have numerous horeshoe hoops, and plugs, and few hanging styles and other misc body jewelry that accumulates from getting piercings over the years and stretching your ears. Anyone know where or how i can sell all of my excess jewelry to make some spare cash.
these are not regular jewelry this is jewelry for stretching ears and more gothic or extreme looking jewelry.-
ANSWER:
I would suggest trying eBay or hitting up any friends who are interested. However, old jewelry that's been through a piercing isn't usually clean or safe to share. Jewelry that's been in stretched lobes usually has more built-up gunk since the pierced area is larger. You should clean them thoroughly and disclose to any potential buyers that they have been previously worn, so your customers know the situation up front. You don't want to get back feedback by hiding it from a buyer. Good luck!

QUESTION:
How easy is it to sell on ebay and is it worth the charges it costs to post items. Is it a smart way to make $?
I went to the goodwill in my area months ago and found a dept. 56 "Chapel of love" That lights up with the happy couple on the outside. Its 2 seperate pieces NIB and they are selling it Buy it now on ebay for 99.00. I paid 5$ for it. If i posted it on ebay for Buy it now for 60.00, i would make a 55.00 profit. You can find many things out there CHEAP for instance, at yard sales. I bought a Princess house ornament that sells on ebay for 29.99 buy it now. I paid 6.00 for it at a yard sale. I looked on ebay earlier and found a woman that was selling a Tin man wizard of oz barbie, which is one that my mother has (she collects and is wanting to sell them seperately). A shop that has 9,000+ purchases had it listed for 79.99. A seller that had only 55 purchases had it sold for 19.00. All was different is the listing for the 79.99 was more descriptive and had a much clearer picture of the doll NIB. You could turn around and buy the doll for 19.00 and repost it for 79.99 for example. I would love to open a shop on ebay of vintage items and clothes that are modeled in by my friend who is very thin and petite. If you look on lookbook.nu, you will find many people that share pictures of their vintage fashion and it is back people! I think i would find tons of things like that and sell them for much more on there. I would also like to buy supplies from Etsy, which is a handmade website of sellers who sell their handmade items. The items under supplies are already crafted so it makes it easier for you to assemble the unique and OOAK jewelry. For instance, you buy 2 ceramic owl charms hand painted, and put them on a Safety pin type brooch with maybe another embellishment. The 2 owls charms would cost about 2.00 for a set of 6 in a variety of colors and you can get the Safety pin and other little embellishments to add for practically nothing. I have seen people on there sell the same exact thing and charge 12-15$ PER BROOCH. It would be a lot harder to sell your items on etsy (i would imagine) because there is so much competition. Maybe ebay would be better and you would have a better turn out. I would like to open a couple of shops for different styles, but i wanted to check to see if it would be possible to do with a 360$ a month income (i am on disability and this is my extra $ after my bills are paid). It will give me something to do at home and hopefully i can make profit. Please let me know if this would be possible. Thanks so much, guys!
Ex. how much would it cost to post an item for 15.00 starting bid listed for a week.
vs. how much it would cost for a 15.00 buy it now listing for a week.with the best description and photo options.

ANSWER:
Youve pretty much got all the answers from the other people but I wanted to add..
I sold Barbies on Ebay for a long time.1. The picture is everything.
I could sell the same doll and get more than other people, because I spent a lot of time on the photo.
With stuffed animals and dolls..you MUST touch their child heart.
A picture should make them thing " I cant live without this"Ebay is like doing a TV ad. People dont read unless they like what they SEE first. I saw one woman have Barbie sitting on a table. In the the background was a horrible dirty kitchen loaded with dirty dishes all over.
My thought was my shipping box prob would have bugs in it. People dont realize how BIG the photo is on the selling factor.I also found using font colors softens your voice, or creates a mood.
Saying " this is a lovely doll" in lavender . is better than
THIS IS A LOVELY DOLL !!!! in red.. making you sound like a scatter brained maniac. Develop sales techniques and you'll do well.

QUESTION:
Selling Gold Jewelry?
Hello, my mom is looking to sell some 14 KT gold jewelry for money. A few bullion gold buyers wouldn't buy from individuals but the website USGOLDBUYERS.COM would. Is this website legitimate? Does anyone have any better gold buying websites (that will accept 14 KT jewelry)? What about verification and insurance, I work at a lab so was able to get the exact weight (to the 10th of a millgram) with an analytical balance. How does one know that they will get the same weight agree to the purity (14 Kt)? Once you send it in is there proof of submission and do you have the option to turn down their offer and get your jewelry back?-
ANSWER:
Well. spot gold price is 5.70 / troy ounce. Divide by 31.1 grams / troy ounce, then multiply by 14/24, because of the 14K. So the gold in your jewelry is worth .30 / gram. Probably a bullion buyer will not offer you more than the spot value, and may offer you substantially less. You can check spot prices anytime, they change often:

QUESTION:
How can I advertise my new business website for free? I sell exotic jewelry at freewebs.com/worldspice?
Is there such thing as free when it comes to advertising your website?-
ANSWER:
YES, there's such a thing as free online marketing, but you need to do a lot of workYou can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products (not free and can even be costly, but one of the most effective around). You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com
Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:
1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.
2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!
Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.
If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm
4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as 0 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

QUESTION:
Is it wrong to pray to the saints or wear jewelry with the belief it can protect you?
According to the bible, I'm under the belief that we have access to Christ through the holy spirit. I have a friend who is Catholic and has been giving me jewelry with saints, such as metals and rosaries. I have been looking at some Catholic websites, and they talk about "Christian magic and spells" using the saints. For example, burying a statue of a saint on your front yard when selling your house. Or praying to st. christopher if something is lost. Or believing Mary intercedes for you. If saints are in heaven, and Jesus is the only way to the father, how can we pray to the saints? If you can pray directly to jesus, why would you need anyone to intercede for you? I'm torn between whether this might even offend God. What do you think Christians and Catholics?
Although I'm sure a lot of God haters would love to stick their two cents in, the point of this question is for me to get the perspective of Catholics and Christians since I do believe in God. If you answer with something hateful or smart eleck, I'll just give it a thumbs down and ignore it.-

3.) a 17 1/2 in gold chain with a 10k gold heart pendant. the heart has 3 white stones and 4 red. ( I don't know it they are real rubies and diamonds ) pendant is about 1 1/2 cm.

5.) 1 inch long Italian pepper pendant. Gold. I think 10k not sure.
6.) 14k gold S pendant, 1/2 inch long.
Thats all I'll list. But please if you know about jewelry help me. They were all gifts and do mean a lot to me. Finding the best price will make it easier to part.
-
ANSWER:
Jewelry looses a lot of value once it is second hand. To be able to come up with an approx. price idea, we need the weight of the items. Your white gold bracelet could be anything between $ 20 and thousands, all depending on weight and design. You will only end up with approx. 20% of the money that was initially spent buying the items. If it means a lot to you, I wouldn't sell it.
I want to add here, everything is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. Just because you spend $ 100 for a jewelry item doesn't mean it is 'worth' $ 100. If you want the scrap value, what the content of solid gold is worth, you will have to weigh everything, calculate how much solid gold is in the lot and look up today's gold price.
Cheers

QUESTION:
How can you say the Bible condemns Homosexuality?
There are actually only EIGHT places in the Bible where homosexuality is condemned. And in each place, the situation is ABSURD.1) Adam, and Eve not Adam and Steve. ABSURDITY--Adam and Eve had the most disfunctional family in history. Cain killed Abel, and their surviving children all committed incest. (There was no one else on the planet)
2) Sodom and Gomorrah: ABSURDITY-- Lot the hero escapes. He gets his own daughters pregnant. He is not punished for this. But his wife is destroyed for TURNING AROUND. Watch for this statement ("It was OK for Lot to have sex with his daughters; he was drunk!!!")
3) Leviticus says Homosexuality is an Abomination unto the Lord. ABSURDITY--It also says Lobster is an Abomination unto the Lord. (11:10)
4) Exodus says Homosexuality is wrong. ABSURDITY-- Exodus 21: 7 Says you may sell your daughter as a maidservant. Exodus 35:2 Says to kill people who work on the Sabbath.
5) Romans 1:29 Says Homosexuals deserve death. ABSURDITY--Romans 1:30 Says Gossips deserve Death.
6) I Corinthians Homosexuality is wrong. ABSURDITY Corinthians also says long hair on a man is wrong, short hair on a woman is wrong, women have to cover their heads, and women must be quiet in church. (1 Cor 11:15)
7) Timothy says Homosexuality is wrong. ABSURDITY-- Timothy also says fine dresses, wearing pearls or gold jewelry, or braiding your hair is wrong. (1 Timothy 2:9)
Jude says Homosexuality is wrong. It is simple regurgitation of Sodom and Gomorrah, discussed above. We gays look at the FACT that JESUS never once condemned homosexuality. And Neither do the Ten Commandments.

QUESTION:
Would you like to buy jewelry online?
I am out of work for moths. I am considering to start a business. My friend told me i could sell jewelry online, but i am not sure about its future. So i want to hear your advice? Would you like to buy jewelry online? How about jade from China? I think the Chinese Jade would be a potential aspect.
Thank you very much.-
ANSWER:
Jewelry falls under several categories - fashion jewelry, accessories with gems and precious stones, silver jewelry, gold plated to serious pure gold and genuine diamonds, among others. The main reason buyers will hesitate purchasing genuine gold or diamond or jade jewelries online is that they are afraid of getting fakes. Add to that the customs duties being demanded for importing these items in certain countries. You need to secure proofs that the items you are buying for resale will have certificates of authenticity - for jewelries, there are standard institutions that provide this to legitimate sellers. And you also need to check the custom or trade policies to follow if you are going to import jades in bulk.Hope this helps!

QUESTION:
How much to sell hand-made jewelry for?
I've been making my own jewelry recently and I'm wondering how much I could/should sell it for. I've made a few bracelets, necklaces, and mostly earrings. They're all dangle earrings and some are chandelier earrings. I've heard that you're supposed to apply a 40% increase to the cost of your materials to get the selling price. Is that true? If I spent about on materials per pair of earrings am I supposed to charge about per pair? Would you buy a pair of hand-made earrings for ? I need to know soon because my mom is having an art sale and I'd like to try to sell some things too! Thanks very much!
)
PS. I didn't know where to post it so that's why it's in 2 different categories. Sorry about that.-
ANSWER:
40 percent markup sounds modest... If you spend 8 bucks on materials, unless there's alot of competition, you could easily mark it up 100 percent or more.. Retailers do that regularly with other stuff.. One example was Fred Meyer. I delivered stuff to them and walmart for years. One item was a glass coaster set, we sold it to Freds and Walmart for 4.50. Walmart sold it for 6.99, and fred meyer sold it for 12.99! Ridiculous.. Anyway take into account how much time you spend making each item too.. Lots of people go for handmade jewelry and they wouldn't mind paying a few bucks more for it. Give it a shot! If it doesnt sell well at 16 bucks, mark it down to 14 or 12.. experiment.. Good luck!

QUESTION:
Gold Processing and Selling?
Question 1:Please could someone give me a "comprehensive but simple to understand" way of processing gold dust into bars(at home or at a goldsmith). I heard to sell the gold, it must be certified... is this true and who certifies it?
Question 2:
I need information on how to sell the gold bar after I have done everything right from the first question at close to MARKET PRICE as possible. For example: Do I sell the bar to jewelry stores or are there gold dealers that buy the gold close to MARKET PRICE? Also where is the best country to easily sell your gold. I heard Dubai, how true is that...Please need clear, easy to understand answers. Thanks a million everyone.
-
ANSWER:
Put the gold dust into a metal pot and heat (according to melting point of gold which you can find on internet). Make a mold in the shape of a rough bar (doesn't really matter). You should be able to get some release medium to line the mold. You need to take the bar/s to an assayer to be assayed as to it's purity.
I think they are some jewellers who are authorised to do this. (Hatton Garden in UK) or someone like Johnson Matthey.
It might be best to identify your buyers first so they can tell you in what weight or form they would prefer to buy.

QUESTION:
How can I best go about selling a large amount of new fine jewelry, meant for a store that never opened?
I was left a large amount of jewelry and loose stones that was originally supposed to be the inventory for a new jewelry store. I'm overwhelmed by the amount and value of these items. Please don't say to go to eBay; it makes my head spin! The eBay 'sellers' take 30% or more and don't like to sell jewelry anyway. I'm responsible for handling this wisely but I don't feel very wise. There are diamond rings, bracelets, earrings, watches, etc. plus more gemstones than I can name in addition to the more common ones, like ruby, sapphire, emerald, etc. I know a lot of items are rare. I thought I should look for someone who wants to open a store but I don't know where to look or who to trust. Does anyone have experience in this area? Your advice will be welcome and very much appreciated. This has been stressing me so much for almost six months and now "the natives are getting restless." Please help! Thank You in advance...-
ANSWER:
You might try finding someone looking to open a store as you suggest doing. They are not likely to pay what you think the value is as they will have to make a profit when they sell. If the items sell for what they are worth and were purchased at reasonable wholesale price, even giving 30% to an eBay seller should give you some profit. There are always pawn shops but they too are looking to make a profit and are usually shopped at by individuals looking for a good deal so again, you are not going to come out ahead of an eBay seller. You can always learn how to sell on eBay and market the items yourself. Hopefully you have the appropriate credentials to accuratly appraise the items or they have come with appraisals done by a qualified agency.

QUESTION:
Part 1: Ladies/Brides: Which would you rather wear at your wedding: real pearl jewelry or fake?
I'm breaking into the bridal market with my line of genuine pearl jewelry (see www.sunandmoonpearls.com). The problem seems to be that fake pearls dominate at retail outlets that I'm trying to sell wholesale to and brides either don't know the difference or don't care. The irony is that fake jewelry still costs an arm and a leg (as much or more than my genuine jewelry line) So... Part 2: How do I raise awareness without launching some huge expensive ad campaign? (which would increase my overhead). Any ideas would be appreciated!-
ANSWER:
Well i know that in alot of cities there are trade shows for brides to be and there friends and families so maybe look into setting up a booth at the shows to sell your product but maybe also to raise awareness!! Have posters with the comparison in the product and the prices and maybe word will get out ..even hand out business cards with your website also filled with information. You could even try leaving your card at bridal wedding gowned shops near the till!!
