     1 in³ = 2.54³ cm³

     1 lb = 0.454 kg

     ρ = 0.316 kg/in³(1 lb/0.454 kg) = 0.696 lb/in³

     1 lb = 16 oz

     ρ = 0.696 lb/in³(16 oz/lb) = 11.14 oz/in³

   king's crown is said to be solid gold but may be made of lead and covered with gold. When it is weighed in air, the scale reads 0.475-kg. When it is submerged in water, the scale reads 0.437-kg. (A)Is it solid gold? (B)If not, what percentage by mass is gold?

   • ANSWER:
     In air, the downward force acting on the crown is its weight, m*g, where m is its mass, and g is the acceleration due to gravity (here we will ignore air buoyancy, which will be negligible). This will be read by the balance, which essentially corrects for g and reports that the mass m is 0.475 kg.

     Underwater, the weight force will still be acting downwards, although there will now be an upwards buoyancy force, equal to the weight of the water displaced by the crown's volume v. So, the buoyancy force will be v * d_w * g, where d_w is the density of water.

     So, the net downward force on the crown when underwater will be its weight minus the upwards buoyancy force, i.e.

     (m * g) - (v * d_w * g),

     and the scales record this, correcting for g, as 0.437 kg. Therefore, we have

     m = 0.475 kg, from the result in air, and

     m - (v * d_w) = 0.437 kg, from the result in water.

     Now, the mass of the crown will be v * d_c, where d_c is the density of the crown. We can put this into the second equation and get

     (v * d_c) - (v * d_w) = 0.437 kg.

     Also, from the air result, we get

     (v * d_c) = 0.475 kg.

     We can now put this result into the previous equation to get

     0.475 kg - (v * d_w) = 0.437 kg,

     and rearrange for v to get

     v = (0.475 kg - 0.437 kg) / d_w

     v = 0.038 kg / d_w.

     Now, the density of water is easy to remember, at about 1000 kg/m^3, so we have the volume of the crown as

     v = 0.038 kg / (1000 kg/m^3) = 0.000038 m^3.

     From the air result that v * d_c = 0.475 kg, the density of the crown is simply given by

     d_c = 0.475 kg / 0.000038 m^3 = 12,500 kg/m^3.

     Now, is this the density of gold or some mixture with lead? Well, gold has a density of 19,300 kg/m^3, and lead has a density of 11,340 kg/m^3, so the crown's density is somewhere between the two, hence it is a mixture.

     To quantify the mixture, we use the fact that

     (19,300 * p_g) + (11,340 * p_l) = 12,500 * 100,

     where p_g is the percentage of gold, and p_l is the percentage of lead. Note the factor of 100 on the right-hand side to stand for 100% of the whole crown. We can't solve this as it stands, but we know that p_g + p_l = 100, so we can replace p_l with 100 - p_g, and get

     (19,300 * p_g) + [ 11,340 * (100 - p_g) ] = 12,500 * 100,

     (19,300 * p_g) + (11,340 * 100) - (11,340 * p_g) = 12,500 * 100.

     Solving this for p_g, we have

     p_g = [ (12,500 * 100) - (11,340 * 100) ] / (19,300 - 11,340),

     p_g = 14.572864...

     So, the crown is about 14.6% gold (and the other 85.4% is lead).

     Let's check that we get the right mass for the crown with this result:

     m = v * d_c

     m = (0.000038 m^3) * [ (0.146 * 19,300 kg/m^3) + (0.854 * 11,340 kg/m^3) ]

     m = 0.475 kg, which is correct.

   I've gotten into a nutty discussion with an online friend. They claim that the U.S. goverment captured a train full of Nazi gold (in the aforemented amount) in a tunnel in France. Supposedly this 'find' was used to fund virtually all of the 'Black Projects' of the latter 20th century (Montauk,Philadelphia Experiment, Area 51, etc.) So to prove them wrong, I need a basic fact: much would 10 billion dollars in gold weigh? (assuming 1945 dollars, but today's rates will work as well)?

     There are so many variables involved, first of all A troy ounce, the only currently used unit of the system, is 480 grains, somewhat heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (437.5 grains). A grain is exactly 64.798 91 mg; hence one troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 g, about 10 percent more than the avoirdupois ounce, which is exactly 28.349523125 g. The troy ounce is the only ounce used in the pricing of precious metals, such as gold, platinum, and silver, and this is the only remaining use of the troy ounce. Therefore a pound of gold is about 12 ounces avoirdupois. Then there is the conversion to 1945 monies value. The 2 billion 1945 dollars used to develop the Atomic bomb in 1945 would now be worth close to 40 billion. Finally the cost of gold back then was only dollars and ounce as opposed to todays value of close to 6.80 an ounce. so calculating all of these values it seems that back in 1945 !0 billion dollars in Gold woould be an enormous weight of gold. Far more then could be put on a train safely and transported. Do not believe the story as it is truly false. besides getting to the moon cost 25 billion dollars and getting to Mars will cost 400 Billion dollars. Finally Making the US look like a monkey cage by attacking Iraq has already cost almost 500 billion dollars so how far can 10 billion go if your talking about things like Area 51 and and the like. (Philadelphia project is a hoax) Trust me the money for Black Projects like according to Aviation Week, Aurora referred to a group of exotic aircraft projects, and not to one particular airframe. Funding of the project allegedly reached .3 billion in fiscal 1987, according to a 1986 procurement document obtained by Aviation Week. This money comes out of your pocket and is why the military pays 0 for a toilet seat, etc.

      A special scale is needed to get the precision needed to be accurate but you can come close by using archimedes method and looking up the density of gold on the web. The site I found says Water has a density of one and Gold has a density of 19.3.
      If you get a metric measuring cup that measures 100 cubic centimeters. That is a tenth of a liter. place the ring in the measuring cup. fill the measuring cup to exactly the 100 mark. remove the ring without spilling any water. get as much water to drip off the ring into the cup as possible. Read the amount of water that is left in the measuring cup. The weight of the ring will be 19.3 times the number of cubic centimeters that the water is below the 100 mark when measured in grams. this method has about one significant digit.

      A jewelry store would probably have a scale to measure it for you even if they are not the people you expect to buy the ring.

      Put all the three bags on it and see 48.2 oz reading (machine used once). Now start removing bags one by one.

    How much is my gold worth?
    I'm not very educated when it comes to gold, so I need some advice. Today I took an old 14k gold bracelet of mine to the Gold Buyers kiosk in the mall (similar to Cash for Gold). They determined that is was in fact 14k gold and that it weighed 18.8 pennyweights (measurement used to weigh gold). Their offer was 6. Is this a rip off? I don't know what's a good price and what isn't. Needless to say, I declined their offer to do some research of my own.

    This is what I found (let me know if I'm calculating this wrong)

    1 ounce of pure 24k gold = ,399.28 (as of 12/7/2010)
    1 pennyweight = approx. 0.054 ounces
    18.8 pennyweights x 0.054 ounces = 0.98 ounces

    14k / 24k = 58.3% (14k gold is approx 58.3% pure gold)
    ,399.28 x .583 = 5.78 (price of 1 once of 14k gold, (if I'm doing this correctly))

    5.78 x 0.98 ounces = 9.46

    In conclusion, I feel as though my bracelet is worth 9.46 for just the gold, let aside the value of the bracelet itself (perfect condition, not broken, chipped, etc.)

      The other stuff is shown as the "fineness" of the gold. For instance, if you have 1 oz of 90% gold, its understood that the other 10% is the "other stuff" or alloy metal.

      Law requires stamping on all precious metal jewelries, so if you bought it in the US, it should be real.

    Fake gold and real gold riddle?
    Ok, so, you're working at the national bank or something, and someone tips you off that the last shipment of gold you got, contained some fake gold, but they don't know which is fake and which is real.
    Even more unfortunate for you, is that the fake gold is indistinguishable from the real stuff. Except for one thing. The real gold weighs different from the fake gold. (they are all the same shape and size, so yeah, all the same.)

    Now, for the sake of figuring this out, there can be as many bags as you want, and however many gold pieces in these bags, but the fake gold is in a separate bag of it's own. It is not mixed with the real stuff.

    Now, also for the sake of figuring this out, say the real pieces of gold weigh say, 500 grams each. The fake pieces weigh 510 grams each.

    Heres the hard part. Now, you realise the only way to figure this out is to weigh the pieces to see which ones weigh heavier, and hence is the fake gold. But, there is a serious problem with this. The scales available to you are hard to get working (lets say it shorts out easily, so you will only be able to get one reading from it. the reason for this lame limitation is that this is based off an old riddle, which used a penny weigh, which is when you put money into a machine to get something weighed, but in that riddle, you only had one penny, and so one go to weigh the gold.)

    How can you figure out which bags have the fake gold, and which have the real gold, if you can only use the weigh machine once?

    Ok, sorry, there is one bag of fake gold, and any amount of bags of real gold. But there is more than one bag of real gold. so weighing one piece from a bag wont do the trick.

    Oh, and any number of pieces you want in each bag.

      Its hard but i got it.Somehow

      Label all the bags (dunno how many)
      Then take 1 piece of gold from bag one,2 piece out of bag 2 3 out of bag 3, 4 out of bag four and so on...

      PUT all of them into the weighing machine and weigh them...
      See how many more grams there is then the normal should be ones. Eg. 10 bags can have 10 gold pieces
      10 * 500 =5000

      So if the machine weighs more.
      Eg.
      1 bag got 10 fake gold pieces, so total weigh 600grams correct?

      OK.... this is the difficult part.....sry....dunno how explain...

      ok, if there are 10 fake gold pieces in a bag there will be extra 100 grams correct, same as a fake bag of 11 gold pieces will have 110 extra grams correct??

      So, check the should be real gold weight first.Eg. there are 10 bags, so it should weigh 55 * 500= 27500 correct??
      There should be extra heavier grams, so lets say there are 10 fake gold pieces it will weigh 27600... take the heavier weight minus the original should be correct weight and divide it by 10, as there are extra 10 grams per fake gold pieces...

      Then if the ans is like 14.. the fake gold are from bag 14

      You have to realize that your gold jewelry may not be made of pure gold. But if it is: a troy oz. of gold is about 667 Pound Sterling as of today (12 Oct. 2009). So 4 oz. would be 2668 Pound Sterling. But also remember that a Troy Ounce is different than the Ounce measurement on your kitchen scale. There is not a one-to-one correspondence. A troy ounce is somewhat larger (1.1) than the more commonly used Avoirdupois ounce.

      Best is to have your jewelry appraised by at least two reputable sources.

      Silver- 925/Sterling- a ounce.

      This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

      I'm not totally sure, but this is what I think.

      He puts all of the coins on the scale, then removes them one by one. When he removes each one, only 1g should be taken off, but as soon as he removes the coin that is fool's gold, he will notice that all of a sudden 9g is gone!
      Or maybe he just threatened to hit whoever brought the fool's gold in the face with the scale and they fessed up. Haha.

Therefore when looking at the final reading say it says 5507 grams. Then it means that 7 coins weigh 101 grams therefore pile 7 from which 7 coins came are the genuine ones.

      likewise if they weigh 5509 then 9 coins are genuine and it is pile 9
      If they weigh 5503, then 3 coins are genuine and it is pile 3.

      However many grams there are over and above 5500 grams gives away the pile of the genuine coins.
      As you have also kept the coins on the scale in small piles of 1 coin, 2 coins 3 coins....10 coins, you also know which stack they came from and can put them back in the correct piles.
