The scales available to you are hard to get working (lets say it shorts out easily, so you will only be able to get one reading from it. the reason for this lame limitation is that this is based off an old riddle, which used a penny weigh, which is when you put money into a machine to get something weighed, but in that riddle, you only had one penny, and so one go to weigh the gold.)
How can you figure out which bags have the fake gold, and which have the real gold, if you can only use the weigh machine once?
Can you guys rate this in terms of hardness? Thanks. Good luck with it, took me ages to figure it out the first time.
Ok, sorry, there is one bag of fake gold, and any amount of bags of real gold. But there is more than one bag of real gold. so weighing one piece from a bag wont do the trick.Oh, and any number of pieces you want in each bag.

Its hard but i got it.SomehowLabel all the bags (dunno how many)
Then take 1 piece of gold from bag one,2 piece out of bag 2 3 out of bag 3, 4 out of bag four and so on...PUT all of them into the weighing machine and weigh them...
See how many more grams there is then the normal should be ones. Eg. 10 bags can have 10 gold pieces
10 * 500 =5000So if the machine weighs more.
Eg.
1 bag got 10 fake gold pieces, so total weigh 600grams correct?OK.... this is the difficult part.....sry....dunno how explain...
ok, if there are 10 fake gold pieces in a bag there will be extra 100 grams correct, same as a fake bag of 11 gold pieces will have 110 extra grams correct??
So, check the should be real gold weight first.Eg. there are 10 bags, so it should weigh 55 * 500= 27500 correct??
There should be extra heavier grams, so lets say there are 10 fake gold pieces it will weigh 27600... take the heavier weight minus the original should be correct weight and divide it by 10, as there are extra 10 grams per fake gold pieces...Then if the ans is like 14.. the fake gold are from bag 14

You have to realize that your gold jewelry may not be made of pure gold. But if it is: a troy oz. of gold is about 667 Pound Sterling as of today (12 Oct. 2009). So 4 oz. would be 2668 Pound Sterling. But also remember that a Troy Ounce is different than the Ounce measurement on your kitchen scale. There is not a one-to-one correspondence. A troy ounce is somewhat larger (1.1) than the more commonly used Avoirdupois ounce.Best is to have your jewelry appraised by at least two reputable sources.

This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

I'm not totally sure, but this is what I think.He puts all of the coins on the scale, then removes them one by one. When he removes each one, only 1g should be taken off, but as soon as he removes the coin that is fool's gold, he will notice that all of a sudden 9g is gone!
Or maybe he just threatened to hit whoever brought the fool's gold in the face with the scale and they fessed up. Haha.
