     you should get your jewerly stamped and a verification note of originality should be attached to it by some authentic jewelry examiners. When you attached these documents and the will stamp the jeweley than there will be less chances of such mishaps.

     Rio Grande or Fire Mountain Gems both have stones, findings, tools and anythingyou need for jewelry.

     When I lived in a larger city (Charleston SC) there wereseveral groups of folks who did Lapidary as well - Sometimes I would buy Cabachons from them for less.

     It also is good to go to lapidary shows. Look in the lapidary magazine for current shows in your area. usually there are shows in the spring and fall.

     NC has them often in Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte. SC has them in North Charleston, Mount PLeasant, and Columbia. Virginia has then in Richmond and Charlottesville. I am sure there are others in Virginia but I'm new here.

     This boils down to "How do I market my web jewelry store". High competition is common and should be handled by any good online marketing campaign.

     COMPETING:
     1. It's often best to find the a market niche and not try to compete in the over-crowded main market.
     If you deeply understand your UVP (Unique Value Proposition), as you must, you'll be able to narrow your market down to exactly what you do better than others. Then redesign your site or landing/sales page to fine tune it to the thinking of your niche prospects. If nothing about your store is better than the competition, you're in the wrong business.

     2. Excellent market research is the key. Obviously, you succeed by giving people what they want. But do you understand EXACTLY what they want better than your competitors? If so, you can beat them.

     3. Determine who your top 4 competitors are and thoroughly inspect their sites until you know how they are succeeding. Copy and improve on their best methods and avoid their worst. Same for their keywords.

     ONLINE MARKETING - GENERAL:
     There are over 1 Billion web pages online vying for the first 3 Google pages.
     The Search Engine Marketing (SEM) process goes like this:
     Your Unique Value Proposition
     Write down your UVP
     You must state it clearly, in writing, in a very few sentences and just a few seconds.
     It must quickly and clearly answer these 2 questions in the minds of your prospects:
     1. “Why should I buy your product or service, (what’s in it for me) how will it solve my problem?”
     2. “Why should I buy it from you and not your competition?”

     Market Research (know your audience):
     What is your best target market niche? Look for market niches, not full markets, to avoid competing with the big corporations. Which market niche is looking for your solution to their problem?
     What are their problems, needs, fears, desires, frustrations?
     What are they thinking?
     What key phrases will they use in the search engines?

     Competitor research:
     Who are your most successful competitors?
     What are they doing right that you should emulate?
     What are they doing wrong that you should avoid?
     What key phrases are they using?
     What are their UVPs?
     Which market niche(s) has/have the best fit to your UVP and also the fewest competitors?

     Key phrase research:
     Make a starting keywords list from your own experience, from friend's suggestions and your research.
     Using a good keywords tool:
     Discover new key phrases derived from your list
     Analyze your key phrases. Rank them according to the most searches per month Vs fewest competitors.
     Use key phrases from 1 up to 4 words long (ignore “stop words, like “the”, “a”, “of”, etc.).Group them according to similarity.

     Design your site with a separate landing/sales page for each keyword group. This gets each market niche member to the perfect page for their exact need. Don't use your home page as your selling page.

     Put your best 1 or 2 key phrases in the lading/sales page’s file name (e.g. “green-widgets.html”), in the page title, in keywords and description metatags (Google ignores metatags, other search engines may not), in only one H1 tag, in the anchor text of your links, in your navigation, in one or more H2 and h3 tags, in the alt tags of images, etc.

     Also use your keys in body text. Keep your content readable by both humans and search engine bots. Don’t overdo the percentages of keywords Vs other content. Avoid pages that seem “keyword stuffed” or don’t read naturally.

     Don’t use images, Flash or video instead of text, for your UVP. It's fine to use those to support your UVP further down the page - only after the prospects read your UVP text.

     Keep all distractions off your landing/sales pages. Those pages must only lead your prospect smoothly through your sales process and to actions you want. Along the way, reinforce your UVP by always showing the benefits of moving farther along in your sales process. Follow the best practices expressed on the MarketingExperiments.com web site.      If you can afford the typical a day for a Google AdWords Pay-Per-Click campaign and know how, go ahead. Otherwise, only use PPC to run cheap, quick market analysis runs.

     if i were her i would just go by different stores in the mall and drop off her business cards. see if they will let her put some cards on thier counters. that way customers would see them and possibly call her. who knows, the store she puts them in might even call her about buying some of her merchandise. i used to work at an athletic store and we did it for sports retailers all the time. good luck.

      There are too many risks. The wily con will claim to have never received your package. The company/address may be completely phony and untraceable. Even if receipt is acknowledge, the buyer may low-ball the appraisal and offer you less than fair value. How could you ever find out? After all, the "buyer" has your stuff, so you can hardly just pick it up and take it to the jewelry shop next door. Don't send it.

      First I would check different potential buyer markets to get a comparison of prices offered. Some potential markets would be eBay, Craig's List, and diamond ring websites. Secondly I would search google for "how to sell a diamond ring". Lastly I would set a price that you are willing to take for the ring and stick to the price knowing the buyer will lowball you on an offer. Counter their offer by presenting your findings to the buyer. Take only cash with a NO return deal. If you do not know the buyer they might switch the stone and then ask to return it for refund.

      To be honest, it won't be worth a lot. Pawn Brokers and Jewllers usually give the minimal amount to the seller.

      Your best bet is to sell it privately or auction it on e-bay. That way you should get somewhere near to the price you want.

    Has anyone had experience with selling estate or antique jewelry to online buyers, & who are the better ones?

      Auction, Auction, Auction....online can be tricky. the best thing to do is get an appraisal so you can set an estimate. I have a friend who sells cars on E-bay and is very successful. you can set a minimum with ebay so that you won't ever get under what you paid or what you may have been told it is worth. and get several appraisals, some people may try to tell you it is worth less to get you to sell it to them. Auctions usually have the people there that are in the market for what you are selling and may know it's worth, so they will outbid eachother to get things, especially antiques.

      If you have to sell the property(s) then just know what the going rate is in the neighborhood and what the cost is of what's been added or restored, if any, know the history of the property if it is older. My best advice though is if you don't have to sell then rent, you will get a tax break for it and monthly income to boot. just be wise about who you let out to!

      It doesn't sound too bad actually.

      The current price of a gold troy ounce is 5.92.

      A troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams

      27g/1ozt = .86807 or 86.807%

      5.92 * .86807 = 3.76

      You had 21K gold and therefore it wasn't pure so you must perform the following calculation:

      21K/24K = .875

      .875 * 803.76 = 3.29

      The actual value of your gold was 3.29, but provided that you couldn't smelt it yourself to resell then you got in my opinion a fair deal.

      If you were to sell it to a Jewelry Buyer, most are going to purchase it by Gram Weight based on current gold market and a breakdown of karatage.

      In your case, a 4oz chain is approx. 113 grams.
      The going rate for 10kt Gold is about .00 per gram

      So, 113 x 8= 4.00

      Again, just approx.

      No if there are no misrepresentations made about the quality, contents or otherwise of the product then they can sale fake jewelry all they want. I am sure that if you googled cubic zirconia or diamonique that you will find many fakes being sold as fakes quite legally.

      It is true that it is illegal to sell knock offs, a rolex that says rolex but obviously for 14.99 isn't a rolex is not illegal for the buyer, but is illegal to sale due to copyright infringements.

      To be a successful Jewelry Buyer, I would say you have to have the following:
      1) Knowledge of Current Trends. ie: colors, designers, styles
      2) Ability to forsee possible trends to get a jump on the seasons.
      3) Strong Verbal and Negotiation Skills.
      4) A Very Good Knowledge of True cost of Materials and Labor.
      5) Current Passport: Most Jewelry Product is made in Hong Kong, China, India and Bangkok
      6) Knowledge of Other Cultures and their customs.
      7) Willingness to travel.

      Being a Buyer, just doesn't mean, picking out items that you like. It is having an open-mind and a foresight to what your market wants.

    In order to safely sell expensive jewelry to international buyers on Ebay, what must I know?
    I am disabled and cannot spend a lot of time on the computer, or else I would research all this myself. I have sold things on ebay, but never internationally. My ex-husband has been asking me to get the wedding set out of the safe deposit box and sell them for 3 years now!! I feel that I will get a better price on ebay than just taking them into a local shop. I have been putting it off, because I don't know what I have to deal with to open up the bidding to international buyers.

    I am concerned about any and all legal considerations, postal regulations, insurance, and possible scams. I want this to go smoothly. I only accept Paypal, but I don't know if this is sufficient for me to be safe.     Actually, Keith talked about cutting out international shipping because of all the extra hassles and problems. THAT is exactly what I want to know about. WHAT ARE the extra hassles and problems of selling to someone internationally through ebay, and how can they be avoided/dealt with?

    • ANSWER:
      When you go to the post office you just have to fill out a customs form explaining where it is going and what it is. Its simple. Sometimes customs will open your package and make sure what you are sending is what you stated. There is no way around this, but it usually never causes an issue.

      The biggest pain will be finding out for people how much shipping will be. You can get "quotes" from the post office though.

      Insurance will work the same as if you would send it nationally. Typically you add it into the cost of the shipping.

      PayPal is the safest way to sell and purchase. I never have worries with PayPal.

      If you do not want to sell to international buyers, you can state on your auction that you ship only to the US.

    Is there a way to sell my old diamond jewelry for cash?
    I live near philadelphia so anywhere around there. I have heard of pawn shops but I have never tried to do anything like this before. Even if I wanted to sell my jewelry over the internet, I would have no idea any information buyers might ask including the weight and carot.

    • ANSWER:
      Some jewellery shops will buy second hand jewellery - either to melt down/reuse if they also design, or to resell if the jewellery is in good condition.

      Your best bet is to go around and ask in different places as their offers will widely greatly. If they are thinking about buying then they will usually offer you a lot less than its cost value. It is defiantly worth looking around. (More expensive areas will often pay more money for good jewellery because they can sell it on for more).

      Even if you do not get any good offers they might be able to give you any idea of the carat, etc.

      I'm afraid my knowledge of pawn shops is non-existant however!

34. QUESTION:
    Where is the best place to sell broken gold jewelry?
    I have a broken gold necklace and want to sell it. However, I have seen in many news stories that those gold buyers in the mall, and on TV, are scammers and only give you a fraction of the gold's actual worth. Who should I look to sell to? Jewelry store?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, do not go to one of the places that pay you a portion of what ever gold is selling for via the stock market. The "Cash for Gold" places will scam you for as little as 30% of what the true price of gold is that day.

      Every city has one place in town that pays what ever the stock market (or very very close to what the stock market is that day) is at that day. So if you have an ounce of gold, and gold is at 1,100, they will give you 1,100. They then sell sell it to a guy who melts it down and makes it into rings, and triples the price and resales it at places like Kay Jewelers (huge scam btw).

      So what you need to do is call around to each place in town that buys gold and ask them how much they pay. Usually the best one is just called "Gold and Silver" and is not a pawn shop. A pawn shop will give you about 40-60% on gold. Make some calls. And do not look on Craigslist for a private buyer, they pay about 80% of the true price--all they do is run to the gold shop and make 20% off what you just sold.

      Try mass mailing to trade groups. Look for usenet groups related to purchasing agents and retail establishments. They are constantly looking for sources. Send emails to a variety of business who may be interested in your product line. Include a handful of pictures as to entice their interest. Be willing to provide samples if you get a bite. It's a lot like fishing... Bait the hook, cast the line where the fish are.....wait, then bam, set the hook and reel them in. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

      I'm sure they sent the pieces back because they weren't gold. The karat markings have nothing to do with what's really in the metal.
      One can purchase a karat marking stamp and stamp their currency or their car or any other metal objects, yet those heretofore steel, copper, nickel, etc. objects aren't magically transformed into gold by virtue of a stamping.

39. QUESTION:
    How much percent of jewellery appraisals should I expext if I sell to a jewellery buyer?
    I know appraisals are inflated to the maximum for insurance purposes, and that If I sell jewellery, I cannot expect them to pay the full appraisal amount to me.

    But how much should I expect? Not from a pawn shop, but from a jewellery/gold/silver buyer.

    Half the appraisal? One third?

    How would I go about finding a buyer for an antique diamond ring? I don't want to sell it to one of those "We buy your old gold!" fly by night places...I want someone legitimate.       We wholesale fashion jewelry and accessories and have customers that are often in need of showcases. In New Orleans used showcases are listed in the miscellaneous section of the want ads. Some areas have businesses that deal in used store fixtures that sometimes have them. Another source is major retailers closing down that often sell the fixtures last. New ones can be bought from Omaha Fixtures and other companies. They will ship them to you by freight truck.

      4 oz of gold jewelry is not 4 ounces of gold. It depends on if it is 10 k or 22k. I actually just sold some old jewelry through the goldkit.com folks. I got 5 for 2 broken chains, a gold tooth, a completely smashed watch and 2 10k rings. I was happy with that....you can send your jewelry to them and ask for a phone quote. If you don't want to accept what they offer, they will send it back. Shipping both ways is free.

    Is the price of gold jewelry different than the price of gold bars?
    I called a local gold buyer and he told me that the price per ounce for gold jewelry differs from the price per ounce for gold bars. I thought that it didn't really matter. I have pure 24 karat gold items and I thought I could get at least 00 per ounce, the official price for gold per ounce. Is this wrong? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
