Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

Price For Scrap Gold

The beauty of old coins, like the silver dime, are hard to beat. For about a dollar, you can get a silver dime. Silver is a good investment choice in my mind for the fact that it is cheap historically. It is easy to sell and buy nowadays, thanks to the internet. Coins can also be a much more fun investment over say, bonds or stocks. Other investments, like stocks, are only fun when they go up in value while it is yet enjoyable owning a collection of old dimes. Stocks hold a purpose and so do silver and gold.

Pre 1964 Silver dimes in the USA and pre 1968 silver dimes in Canada are different, yet great in that they can be horded in a large safe or in a simple, empty, peanut butter jar for the little guy that can barely pay the rent each month. You can save dimes up, one at a time if you are the hard worker on minimum wage. For the little guy, keeping a sharp eye out for that stray silver dime still in circulation is a good way to build your wealth a little at a time. Of course when you come across a silver dime, it goes into that little jar with the rest the silver coins that you've picked up along the way from unknowing clerks who did not know the value of the pre 1966 silver dime.

Here are some quick facts on the Canadian silver dimes. They were last minted in 1968, but only about half of the coins contained 50% silver at the time of minting. The other half was almost all nickel. Now the Canadian 1967 centennial silver dimes have the cod or salmon fish on them. These dimes were again split in half due to the sharp rise in silver at the time. Half of the dimes minted in this period were the normal standard, 0.715 of an oz pure silver of the face value. Be it, 10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 half dollars or one single silver dollar, this was and is considered equal to the 0.715% pure silver content of face value. The other dimes minted at the time were about half 50% silver and 50% nickel and copper. The 1966 and the previous years were about 71.5 % pure silver. If this is too hard to remember, just grab all the coins that are pre 1968 and sort the rest out with someone that knows this stuff. The 1966 Canadian coins are all sound and you won't go wrong with these dimes.

Now, for those that have a little more money than the average investor who's just keeping his nose above water when it comes to money. You can buy the older coins in the big junk silver bags of dimes, all in one shot, without too much thought. It comes down to, "Ummalet's see. Should I buy that big bag of silver dimes or that second big screen T.V. for the den?" There isn't much thought in that, when it come to that fact that you can have both without putting too much strain on the old pocket book. Being rich or poor though has very little to do with it, in that silver is still silver. You can melt it, cut it, or sell, buy, and trade it, and silver will still be silver. At the end of the day, the silver dime will always have a market because it is used in industry and so heavily in electronics and just one dime today's prices will only cost you about one dollar.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
anyone know the price for scrap gold? what about sterling silver?
I have lots of scrap 10K and 14K gold as well as some pieces of gold jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets) and some sterling silver jewelry. Does anyone know what it's selling for these days? Or would I get more for the pieces if I sell them as pieces, not scrap? I need to make money quick, your answers are appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
The price you will receive will depend on where you have your scrap reclaimed, the amount of scrap you have and the market rate for gold. Remember that you will not receive the spot price for gold in return for your scrap--there are assaying, refining/reclaiming costs that will need to be deducted.

Instead of taking your scrap to a jeweler who would act as a middleman between you and the refiner (and therefore give you a little less than the refiner would give them), go directly through a refiner with a reclamation program. Anyone like a jeweler or the outfits that advertise on TV are actually just offering to act as middlement between you and the refiner for a piece of the pie.

I've used the refiner David H. Fell & Co. in Los Angeles for my scrap recovery and been very pleased with the system they have set up. Click on the link below for contact information; they will send you a kit you can use for submitting your scrap.

      Good luck.

  2. QUESTION:
    fair price for scrap gold?
If I want to sell some gold jewelry for scrap, how much per gram of gold is a fair price? I know whoever I sell it to has to then sell it to a refiner, and everyone wants to make money along the way, so what should I expect? I know the karat weight of the items and how much they weigh, so I can calculate the exact amount of gold I have. It has a value of about 0 with gold at per gram. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
If the value of the gold is 0, I think a fair offer would be in the neighborhood of 0.

  3. QUESTION:
    scrap 9 carot gold price?
Ive 451 grams of 9 carat scrap gold, should i sell it now while the price is high or is it going to go any higher in coming months. If i do decide to sell it does anyone no any companies that will give me the highest price for it instead of these stupid advertisements on t,v...i seen a place in birmingham offering £9.75 for scrap 9 carat but im thinking if i could get higher it would be excellent..who do these people send there gold to as im sure there geting a lot more for it.

    • ANSWER:
OK, 451 grams is almost a pound of metal and that's big time. Yes, sell it now, you are near the highest price for gold which is in a bubble and far more likely to decline than to appreciate much higher. 9 karat gold is 9/24 pure or 0.375 fine gold. 451 x 0.375 = 169.125 grams pure gold content. 169.125/31.1 = 5.44 troy ounces of actual gold weight. At today's price of about GBP770/troy ounce would give you a meltdown value of almost GBP4,200 for the whole lot. A local scrap dealer should pay you at least 70-75% of that, so call around locally. You are right, those TV spots are rip-offs and simply looking for a sucker.

You could also try eBay, where even scrap gold sells at auction for 90-95% of spot price, but you would have to prove the gold content somehow, possibly by certification by an assayer.

  4. QUESTION:
whats the price for scrap gold?

    • ANSWER:
If you trade on the internet you would get about £7.00 for a gram of 9ct gold but for 24ct gold you get about £17.00 a gram, for platinum about £16 a gram. If the jewellery is not broken it would be better to try and sell it as secondhand jewellery

  5. QUESTION:
WHAT IS THE PRICE OF 14KT SCRAP GOLD PER GRAM?
I HAVE SOME14KT GOLD THAT WEIGHT 41 GRAMS. I WANNA KNOW WHAT I SHOULD GET FOR THAT IF I WAS TO SELL IT. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP !!

    • ANSWER:
At current spot price of 75 per ounce, its worth about .80 per gram. So 41 grams would be worth about ,000. Probably get a little less than that at gold dealers. Hope this helps, mule.

  6. QUESTION:
% of spot price payed for scrap gold?
Dealers pay you less for scrap gold than the spot price. What is that percentage?

    • ANSWER:
      It changes according to supply/demand.

  7. QUESTION:
How much is the price of gold today 7/12/2008 closing on 7/11/2008?
I am looking to see gold as scrap, gold in new pieces, and silver as scrap and new pieces.I am going to different jewelers that buy gold to see what the best price is,I just want to know what I am up against and the real prices versus what they will pay.Any feedback to help me not get ripped off or sold for alot less than I should. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Prices change constantly, you can monitor them online:

      http://www.kitco.com

Dealers will charge you a small percentage over "spot", or pay you a small percentage under "spot", for items valued primarily for their gold or silver content. Rare items or finely worked jewely goes for even more. If you just want to buy and sell gold or silver, you might check coin dealers as well.

  8. QUESTION:
Where in canada can I get above 97% of scrap value for gold?
I have a place here in Maryland that gives me 96% of the goldspot price on my scrap gold. In canada, gold goes for more an ounce. Im looking to maybe ship some out and get a little bit more for it. Does anyone know of a gold liquidator in canada??

    • ANSWER:
First, it is a very rare business that pays better than that. Paying more means giving up their profit margin. In general, only private individuals pay better than that. My own business pays slightly better, but only for coins - I am not buying scrap gold right now, and if I was, I would be paying less.
Second, while you do get more dollars for your gold in Canada, they are Canadian dollars. Spot gold is presently US20, which equals CAN95. Canadian dollars are worth slightly less than US dollars, and you will lose a little bit converting then to US dollars.

  9. QUESTION:
what is a fair price to pay for scrap gold measured in grams?

    • ANSWER:
This requires a bit of math...
First, find the spot gold price per troy ounce. Right at the moment, that is 3.60. See the web site below for current gold quotes:
      http://www.kitco.com/market/

Now, divide by 31.1 because there are 31.1 grams in a troy ounce. That will give you the price per gram of 24 Karat gold.
Scrap gold will never be 24K gold. 10K, 14K, and 18K are all far more common. 18K gold is 18/24 or 75% pure gold. 10K is 10/24 or 41.7% gold. That means the value of the piece is going to vary over a wide range depending on the karat, and you will have to do some calculating.
Coin shops generally pay about 80% of the gold value. Pawn shops pay 50% or less, and I'm told that Cash4gold.com and similar places pay 30% or less, and nothing for precious stones that may be part of the piece. This is where you decide what you want your profit margin to be.
      Enjoy.

  10. QUESTION:
Should GOLD Scrap & NON Scrap go for the exact same price ?
When you arr Buying or selling gold what do you base it on besides the weight ? If you have NEW, VINTAGE, SCRAP all weigh the same how do You go about pricing it ?

    example :

    1. 14k Scrap gold ~ 20 grams

    3. 50 year old Vintage Ring : 14K Gold 20 grams

SHould they all be the same price or not ?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
To a refiner, it doesn't matter. It's all going to be melted down. It sounds cold, but that is the way gold refiners do business.

  11. QUESTION:

where to sell gold bullion / dore from dental scrap gold to?
I've melted lots of dental scrap into an ingot / gold bar and refined it using a home refining system. its 99.98% gold. where can i sell it to? I saw others on Ebay which sold for a lot less than the gold spot price (ie, spot was /gram and other home-made bars were selling for roughly /gram only) The only ones selling for a good price were the stamped ones from Metalor, Suisse, etc. Since I made it myself, what do I do with it? I tried selling some before to refiners I found online like Midwest Refineries and Garfield, but the return was NOT as advertised. They claimed I would get 94%-96% of the value but they really only gave me like 60% - scammers, to say the least. Anyways, does anyone have experience with a reputable gold buyer for non-minted gold bullions? Allso, I have a good amount of palladium which is about half the price of gold - who can buy that at a good price? Thanks

  19. QUESTION:
question about gold and gold price....?
what an i expect to get for a typical ladies 14k gold ring or gold scrap chains that are 14k?

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
A lot less than you think
First they are 7/12 gold, or about 1/2 gold content.
and The company that buys it has to refine it to 24K gold and that costs, and they also want a profit.

So Junkgold is worth something but nothing near 99.99% gold in coins

  20. QUESTION:
    price of gold estimate?
I have a gold ring with fake pearl and it looks like real diamond chips that was purchased from Witmark and a gold pin with nothing on it and I was wondering if anyone knew a ballpark estimate on how much I would get if I took it in for scrap gold.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on a number of things such as the quality of the gold. The best thing to do is take it in to a jeweler. Most good ones will give you a rough value for free. Just make it clear that you do not want to sell it to them because they will be a lot more honest about the price

    • ANSWER:
The following I found for you on:
      http://www.finishing.com/191/49.shtml
It was submitted by Richard Alcor, Cushing, OK, USA

There are a number of methods that may be used. Reverse electroplating is generally fairly simple and can be done using an automotive battery charger, a stainless steel plate, a carbon rod (or another stainless steel sheet), a 5 gallon detergent bucket and some commonly available (and inexpensive chemicals). This method works well for certain types of scrap; clipped leads and ends for instance and heavy plated scrap. Whole PCB scrap COULD also be done this way, but you would need to first crush and burn to reduce the volume and get rid of waste materials. You can also use AR (Aqua Regia method), Cyanide Leach (or alternative using a product called Cyanide Leach Substitute or CLS), mercury, etc.

I generally use AR for everything. Processors, memory and clipped leads all provide excellent returns. I also do the rest of the PCB, after crushing and burning. Hard drives, in my experience, take so long to dismantle that they are worth more to me as dirty aluminum scrap than anything. If you spend the time to come up with a better method for retrieving the scrap from the read/write head and platters inside the drive, then they too may be profitable (a lot of people swear by them).

In my experience, whole PCB board of mixed type from mixed sources will provide around 1-3USD/lb profit after expenses using AR.

  27. QUESTION:
    Buying gold in foreign countries?
    Hi,
I have a question; I have learned that the U. S. Dollar-though shrinking in value still has some decent momentum for its value in China. Therefore-- what about the price of gold in China? Can a person buy gold in China and get more for it because the US dollar still holds value there, or are there limitations to importing gold from China to the US? What about other countries as well ... any ideas on how to procure scrap gold and come out with a big profit? Thanks,.

    • ANSWER:
Actually, the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Chinese Renminbi is fixed by the Chinese government. That creates the perception that the US Dollar is maintaining its value there. As you may be aware, the US has been putting pressure on China to sever that link, which would cause the Chinese Renminbi to appreciate rapidly against the dollar (which would also make Chinese goods more expensive in the US and make US goods cheaper in China.
In the mean time, buying gold there may not be a bad idea. I don't know of any restrictions on exporting gold from China. You may have to pay customs in the US, though.

  28. QUESTION:
how do you invest in gold or silver?
I was wondering where you buy the gold and then where would you sell the gold for a good price?

is it mostly just scrap gold and silver that is bough and sold?

    • ANSWER:
There are several ways to invest. No, it is not mostly scrap gold and silver that is bought and sold. Forget the TV ads. Most people buy and sell using an investment company (either a stock broker type or a precious metals company).

The types of investment are the following:

      1. Collectible coins. - It is best not to try this without knowledge of the subject. Use a reputable dealer as listed below for bullion coins.

      2. Bullion Coins - You can buy these by mail from a reputable dealer. (Blanchard, Investment Rarities, etc.) I shy away from the ones that advertise on TV. The better companies advertise in financial magazines.

      3. Stock or mutual funds dealing with bullion production or mining. Check out stock symbol: ABX & UXG for gold HL for silver. (HL has not performed well in the past 2 months.)

      4. Stock in a reputable company that buys and maintains gold and silver in their vault. Example : CEF

CAUTION: Gold and silver are volatile and you will see the price go up and down. Mining stocks are even more volatile. Start with an amount that you could risk loosing 25% of its value without hurting yourself.

I invest in gold stock and mutual funds and make good profits. But I do not use the buy and hold strategy. Some people do.

My strategy is pretty basic but it works for me. I try to buy after prices have fallen some and sell when I can make 10% to 15%. I recently made a little over 25 % on a mining stock. I have also sold at a 30% loss before I learned to sell quick to take my profits and cut losses.

Start slowly. Go with the price trends. Sell quick to cut your losses and take advantage of profits.

Use Yahoo Finance to do your research. I like to watch the 3 month graph of the price of a stock.

I also do all my gold and silver trading from an IRA to keep the profits from being eaten up by taxes and to simplify record keeping. If you want to buy and sell stock or mutual funds, I recommend Charles Schwab, eTrade or other discount broker.

      Good luck.

  29. QUESTION:
How do I sell my scrap gold direct to a refiner?
I'm looking to sell my old scrap gold jewelry and things, and get the highest possible amount for them. I keep calling all these ads on TV for people that buy it, but the prices I get seem to all be way too low. How do I sell my scrap gold direct to a refiner?

    • ANSWER:
Try Specialty Metals in Fairfield Connecticut.
The phone number is 800-426-2344 www.specialtymetals.com
They will buy your gold at prices way above what a jeweler
or pawn shop will pay. The ads for gold buyers on TV are full of problems. Go to Better Business Bureau web site and look up each company. If you see problems, stay away. BBB.com

  30. QUESTION:
How does a jewelry store determine how much to pay for scrap gold?
I have heard that some places don't pay very much compared to others. How can I tell it's a fair price?

    • ANSWER:
Look up the current market price for pure gold. Determine the gold content of your jewelry based on how many carets it is and the weight of the metal. 24 carat = 100% gold, 12 carat = 50%, etc. My understanding is that a fair price is 50% of market price based on the pure gold content of your jewelry. Ask the jeweler how he is determining what to pay. The honest ones won't hesitate to give you the answer. Gold is selling for 9.50 per ounce on the futures market right now.

  31. QUESTION:
Scrap Gold Who Gives the Best Prices?
I have some scrap gold to sell.

I've been given a code (which is 61240) that I'm told you can type into the form at Hatton Garden Metals and you will then get a better price than they advertise on their website for scrap gold.

I've looked at their advertised prices, which seem very good - just about the best in fact - and I've also seen loads of horror stories on the net about TV scrap gold companies ripping people off and paying a very low amount.

Has anyone used any scrap gold companies, what have been your experiences, and has anyone tried the code at Hatton Garden Metals (and does it really give you more money)?

    Thanks.
Rocky, I'm asking a question here, not asking for a sales pitch on your company, and I have 2 issues.

    1) I am in the UK not the US, so what you do or don't do is totally irrelevant.
    2) Don't post on here that another company in the same business as you has "scammed" people - post WHERE you have found this online, because I can't find any evidence of this at all.

What you've posted just looks like a sales pitch, and anattempt to blacken the name of another company. Please post links to where these bad reviews are.

    • ANSWER:
Figuring out who will give you the most money for your scrap gold can be very difficult if you are not experienced. I work for a precious metals refinery called Metallix Direct Gold, which has been buying precious metal scrap for over 40 years. I did some research on Hatton Gold Metals, and found that a few customers have reported to being scammed by the company. Our website has a gold calculator which will give you an estimate on how much you would get for your gold with daily updated prices according to the London Fix. If you like the price of the estimate, you can send in your gold to us and we will analyze exactly what the price will be. If you are not happy with the price that you will be getting, then we will send all of it back to you as soon as possible. We also insure your package up to ,000 when you send your scrap.

If you have an extra minute, check out or free download on the 7 Steps To Getting The Most Money For Your Gold. Both of the links are listed below.

  32. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:

  33. QUESTION:
IS WHITE GOLD WORTH THE SAME AS ALL OTHER GOLD??? ***10 pts***?
When selling scrap gold, will I get the same price for white gold as any other type of gold? Just curious. 10 pts.

    • ANSWER:
When selling gold (scrap or other) the price you receive is based upon the gold content. Because gold is too soft to be used pure, it is mixed with other metals, usually silver and copper.
Follow the link below, and you will get a good idea of the gold content based on the number of carats of the gold (the higher, the softer and the more pure gold)
White gold will be about 37 % gold and 63 % silver. To make the story short, white gold is going to be paid way less than 22 carat gold.

  35. QUESTION:
Troy Ounces Conversion Help Gold Refinery Question!!!!?
I am having trouble figuring this out. Lets say I have 3 grams of 14K gold. I know that a troy oz is 31.15g and lets say today's price of Gold is 1500.00 per troy oz. The Refinery only pays 98% of a troy oz. BUT, for 14kt, only 58% is counted. If anyone has experience with Gold Scrap please, you know what I'm talking about and help me figure this out!

    • ANSWER:
Well the reason that only 58% of the weight of 14 karat gold is counted is because it is only 58.33% of actual gold, with the rest being other metals, such as copper or silver. Pure gold is 24 karat. Therefore: 14 divided by 24 = 0.58333 = 58.33%. If the refinery actually pays 98% of the gold spot price that is a super good offer.

  36. QUESTION:
who gives best prices for gold?

    • ANSWER:

  37. QUESTION:
how much would i get if i sell my scrap gold?
i know prices always fluctuate but i live in new york and i have a bunch of gold hoop earrings, some old necklaces.. and i have a name plate ring and nameplate necklace that were both very expensive. How much do you think i would get for it?

    • ANSWER:
It will depend on the weight (heaviness) and carat weight of each of the items (10k, 14k, 18k) that will determine the overall price.

I work in NY and I actually just scrapped some old earrings and a broken bracelet and an old class ring...made several hundred dollars off of everything and it was mostly 14k gold.

      Good luck!

  38. QUESTION:
I've been working at a Pawn Broker / Check Casher for about a year now...?
I work on salary, plus commission. The cheaper I can buy something, the greater my commission. The more I can sell something for, the greater my commission. It is a sliding scale where more I take advantage of someone, the more I make. For example, yesterday the price for scrap gold was .33 per gram, as we generally pay 1/3 the price of closing price the previous day. If we have a dramatic price change up or down, we something adjust in the middle of the day.
If I can buy 10 grams of gold for .30, I get 5% of that, or .66. If I can get away paying less, say for 10 grams, I get 5% plus 50% of the difference, .66 plus .65.
Lately I've really be doing well, but my conscious is getting the better of me. There's no way I'm going to give up a 0+ week job, as this is a good 0 a week more than I earned as a delivery truck driver. However, I need to balance what I do. I gave 0 worth of food to the local pet shelter today. That felt good, but an hour later, I feel guilty
again. At work they say "it's just business, and business is good". Every other business is there for the same reason, to make money. Some are a little distasteful like my job, but am I really any different than anyone else? We all make money.
Any suggestions on how I can balance what I do with how it makes me feel more and more often? I don't want to give up the good living I earn, as just like anyone else, I don't deserve to live in poverty, so why should I?

    • ANSWER:
If you are feeling guilty, that should be telling you something. You don't need to ask anyone else's opinion, you have already answered your own question. What you are doing is not right. Can you live with the guilt?

  39. QUESTION:
Should I sell my gold jewelry and scrap gold now? I have over 11 oz of 14k.?
At over 0 for gold this morning, I have read predictions that the more we go into a recession, the higher the price of precious metals. Now I'm wondering, should I sell the small amount that I have or hold on? These are pieces I can let go of with no attachment but I'm wondering if it would be more prudent to hold on...any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
That 0 per ounce is troy ounces which is 31 grams not 28 grams, that is the way precious metal is wieghed so you probably have closer to 10 ozt

Your gold is 14 k, spot price is for 24 k so you are talking a price of 5/ozt not 0

The places which buy your scrap gold only give a percentage of the spot price because they in turn, sell it to recyclers who don't give them the spot price since they have refining costs and also need to turn a profit so you are only going to get at best, about a third to half of what your gold is worth.

If you want to sell, your best bet would be to sell the items as scrap gold on a site like ebay. There are many bidders who buy scrap gold. Personally, I cannot bear the thought of sellng my gold, I am a gold prospector for the hobby, not the money.

  41. QUESTION:
Scrap Gold - what to expect?
I have lots of gold I am going to scrap. A friend of mine works at the Kiosk so I'm sure I won't get completely screwed...however, what do I need to expect? I know gold is at 1400. right now which would be the base price for 24k. So, about per gram of pure gold. How much less will the 14k be than the 24k, and how much lower will the 10k be from the 14k? Obviously I'm not expecting to get the full value. I know how a business has to run. But what is a good range? 30%? 50%? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
The gold is separated into the different purities. Sorry for not adding before.

    • ANSWER:
normally, u should separate the scrap into : 14k, or, 10k, or 24k. this will be more easy for u to sell it in future.
if it is a mixture, nobody can give u a price about it.
the best is : u look for a company who can re-fine the gold. u could send the scrap to them and they will re-fine it for u: u will get the fine gold ( or they will buy it ) and will pay them the labor!
i used t be a jeweler in china and, this is the way what we are doing here!

  42. QUESTION:
How much is a gram converted to pennyweights in gold ?
I'm trying to sell some scrap gold jewelry and I've been checking around at some nearby jewelry shops and everyone gave me a price in pennyweights except for one company that gave me their price in grams. Some kind of formula would be awesome also btw.

    • ANSWER:
One pennyweight (Dwt) = 0.05 Troy Onces
One Troy Ounce = 31.1 gr
Namely, 1 Dwt is equal to approximately 1.55 grams.

Pasternak Findings has on its jewelry supply site a nice conversion calculator: http://www.pasternakfindings.com/template/Convertor/Jewelry_Size_Weight_converter.htm
Select weight for the conversion. Then select the units you wish to convert from and to.

  43. QUESTION:
How much money do I get for 9 grams of scrap gold?
Hi, ...well I have this 9 grams of gold (broken, old and ugly pieces mostly lol) and well I saw the "cashman" kinda cheesy commercials on TV ...and read about him on the newspaper and I was wondering....how much does the cashman or any dealer pays you for gram, cause I don't thing they pay you the full price of a gram...there has to be some kind of trick, because I remember back in my home country dealers like this used to pay you like 1/4 of the price per gram or something like that ...oh well I don't expect to get rich I just want to sell all this old pieces and get enough money to get a nice one or save the money...I just thought it would be a good idea to visit this cashman guy and see how much I can get from all this scrap jewels...and well even though almost all of the pieces are marked 10K and 14K there is one that only some letters and the gold is kinda yellow ..it is a ring very old but still looks nice is there a way to find out if it is made of real gold or is it gold plated
...and has anyone ever gone to see the cashman or any other gold buyer? Is it really a good idea to go to see him? Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
Hi. The price varies as you said if it is 10K or 14K. The spot market dictates the price at the moment of execution of the deal. You can test any gold item by making a file cut on the item(less obviously seen spot) and placing a drop of sulfuric acid..you can buy a kit1 If the metal stay the same color...it is gold. If it foams and turns green or off color plated green means copper..white ..base metal. You can also use a rub stone to tell you the Karat of the gold..but that takes practice. you can also shop it around at a jewelers shop or coin shop...but be sure you take pictures 1st and count and weigh the product...and let them know that you have done so..or else you might end up missing some of your product. You have a little over 1/4 ounce of gold or combo...you would average out what you have to come up with your base money. Just guessing sounds like you have between .00 to 5.00 in value. you can also bring it to an auction house...like mine and we would either buy it..consign it or give you a free appraisal. tagger

  44. QUESTION:
Trying to get out of debt, when is the best time to sell our scrap gold and silver?
My husband and I are trying to get out of debt, paying off credit cards, student loans, etc. We have made quite a dent in the past two years considering we have a six year old, four year old, and one year old. We have a decent amount of scrap gold and silver we would like to sell to pay off debt or invest in my husbands business (he needs cash for a buying trip as we sell items online). We have a friend that does this and will give us a fair price for it. Do we hold onto it and hope that the prices continue to climb, or go ahead and sell it and pay towards our debt or invest in the business now? When do you think it will reach it's peak price?

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately, it is not clear when gold and silver will "peak", but it looks like some point in the indefinite future. It could be next month, it could be years down the road. Gold and silver have appreciated nicely over the past 5 years, but I don't think anyone can tell you when the best time to sell would be.
