   Scrap gold jewelry kits? What do you think?
   Has anyone seen those commercials where people get money for their scrap/old gold jewelry? They advertise that you send in your old gold in a "kit" and they send you money for it? Anyone tried it, heard anything about it? It almost seems too far out there, or that they aren't going to give you much money for your gold and you can't get it back? any thoughts out there?

   • ANSWER:
     If you choose to sell your gold as scrap, please do not use one of the outfits that advertise on TV--they will not give you the best price because they are marketing their services to the general public and not to in-the-trade individuals who are more knowledgeable.

     Send your gold to a reputable refiner. There are several who offer refining services to the jewelry, dental, etc. industries and that is where you would get the fairest shake for your scrap. Collecting scrap, sending it to a refiner and being reimbursed for it is a normal occurence for jewelers.

     I've used David H. Fell & Co. in Los Angeles for years. They are a very reputable company with a good history and a well set-up refining service. They will send you a free packet to help you set-up sending in your scrap and will explain the different options for reimbursement.

     Please realize that you will have deducted from your scrap value the cost of assaying the gold and fees for the processing.

   do i include the stone weight when i weigh gold jewellery?
   I have some old jewellery that i want to sell for scrap gold. Its not a lot..no precious gems in them or anything but all real 9 and 18k gold

   i'm weighing them on some scales, however ive just realised that the weight will include the gems..how do i get round this? as i know the gems will be worthless to a pawnbroker

     The stones actually weigh very, very little. The person buying the gold will pull them out before weighing, but whatever you weigh them to be will be very close.

      That 0 per ounce is troy ounces which is 31 grams not 28 grams, that is the way precious metal is wieghed so you probably have closer to 10 ozt

      Your gold is 14 k, spot price is for 24 k so you are talking a price of 5/ozt not 0

      The places which buy your scrap gold only give a percentage of the spot price because they in turn, sell it to recyclers who don't give them the spot price since they have refining costs and also need to turn a profit so you are only going to get at best, about a third to half of what your gold is worth.

      If you want to sell, your best bet would be to sell the items as scrap gold on a site like ebay. There are many bidders who buy scrap gold. Personally, I cannot bear the thought of sellng my gold, I am a gold prospector for the hobby, not the money.

11. QUESTION:
    How do I refine scrap gold jewelery into higher purity gold?
    I have some 14 Karat gold jewelry, and I just wondered how you refine it to make it more pure. I heard that you can heat it up until it melts, and keep it hot, then add borax, and the impurities can be separated.

      unless you have the proper oven i would not do it on your own, gold melts at 1947, that temp is extremely dangerous. if its just a custom piece you want to make, bring it to a jeweller that does their own work, tell them you want to smelt it, they will take a few points for themselves of course, but you will get at least 90-95% of the purity. basically a middleman for a refiner. Being in the pawnbroking business for almost ten years i know 100% this is you best method to get you value! Pawn shops will give little, if your lucky per gram maybe max. (thats what i give) . A higher end jewellery store may put it on consignment and ask for 20%, and may even take years. In short, find a middle man for a refinery.

      If it's scrap gold, personally I think it's better to go directly to a refiner (aka, online gold buying places) You want to make sure you pick one that is an actual refiner though, because there are many imitators.       You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

      1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

      2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

      On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

    I'm trying to sell some scrap gold jewelry and I've been checking around at some nearby jewelry shops and everyone gave me a price in pennyweights except for one company that gave me their price in grams. Some kind of formula would be awesome also btw.

      One Troy Ounce = 31.1 gr

      The price you will receive will depend on where you have your scrap reclaimed, the amount of scrap you have and the market rate for gold. Remember that you will not receive the spot price for gold in return for your scrap--there are assaying, refining/reclaiming costs that will need to be deducted.

      Instead of taking your scrap to a jeweler who would act as a middleman between you and the refiner (and therefore give you a little less than the refiner would give them), go directly through a refiner with a reclamation program. Anyone like a jeweler or the outfits that advertise on TV are actually just offering to act as middlement between you and the refiner for a piece of the pie.

    How does a jewelry store determine how much to pay for scrap gold?
    I have heard that some places don't pay very much compared to others. How can I tell it's a fair price?

    • ANSWER:
      Look up the current market price for pure gold. Determine the gold content of your jewelry based on how many carets it is and the weight of the metal. 24 carat = 100% gold, 12 carat = 50%, etc. My understanding is that a fair price is 50% of market price based on the pure gold content of your jewelry. Ask the jeweler how he is determining what to pay. The honest ones won't hesitate to give you the answer. Gold is selling for 9.50 per ounce on the futures market right now.

20. QUESTION:
    What is the value of a 22 carat gold half sovereign?
    I want to sell some Royal Mint jewellery (unwanted gifts) to a scrap gold/ second hand jewellery merchant but I don't know what it is worth. I have the following:
    A 9ct gold chain & cross bar (with 10 small diamonds) & a 22ct half sovereign pendant from 2003 - limited edition of 5000. Also a pair of 9ct gold earrings in a cross design with a small emerald in the centre & very small diamonds. Finally a sterling silver fine chain with pendant & 3 small sapphires. Can anyone help? What is the minimum I should take? I had a look on www.royalmint.com & the jewellery on there isn't cheap, but if you are selling it on second hand what sort of price can you expect to get?

      You would be well advised to take them to a reputable jewellery store or two, or a reputable pawnbroker, they also buy scrap gold and will give you a fair price.

      Obviously you wont get full values as they need a margin for profit. If i were you i would also consider a reputable auction house as you might get a better price there, but get a valuation first and put a reserve on at 70% of full value.

      Lots of places will buy gold. Small jewelry shops will buy it and use it to repair other pieces for customers. Pawn shops are also an option. I sold my old (broken and single earrings, etc.) jewelry at a local pawn shop and they gave me, I think a reasonable price. Though there are places on the internet that claim to pay you "the highest price" . Someone else may know more how they work.

I guess I will have to chalk it up to "live and learn."

      No, I never have heard of that. Do you have their name, telephone # and mailing address? Call first, then if they do not respond, turn them into your State's Attorney General. They have a fraud division.

    Anyone ever sent their scrap gold off?
    Ok we've all seen it advertised on the tv im sure of it, thing is i wont mention what company i sent it to but it was a complete rippp!!! So I had 45 grams of scrap gold broken earings,odd earings,broken chains etc they "quote" if you are not happy with the amount off money they give you you have 12 days to return the cheque thing is.... You have 12 days from the date on the cheque in which they used up 5 of them days!! so I got around 90 quid for my gold!!! I was so happy until i rung my local jewellers who said I would recieve £5 a gram! which would of been £225 I was shocked because I didnt even recieve half of that from the gold company on tv who also quoted " 20% extra" then offer companys!! what a complete scamm I decided to ring for my gold back and the lady on the other end of then phone denied recieveing the cheque back lucky i sent it special delivery and had a tracking number hey!! I then rand later on and was told it got there at 10.oclock in the morning the lady had lied! I was a MUG dont do it!! You will get more at the jewellery shop trust me!! This is a warning i had to share with everyone!!!

      I agree!!! Jewellery shops is the only way to get the best prices. We took in an old broken necklace and odd earrings and got £80 then mum took in a gold necklace she paid about 50p for at a carboot! and got £110 for it! Once the postal ones have got your gold whos to say they'll give it back and probably know that its hassle for alot of people to refuse there offer!

    Need to find gold refiners?
    I have a vast amount of gold plated jewelry, solid gold jewelry, computer scrap and so on. Ive done a few searches on the net and keep getting the same few refiners. Some charge rediculous prices to refine you precius metals, like lot fees and assay charges and on top of that they keep a percentage of the metals recoverd.

    Can anybody gimmie a few places to go to? I live in Pennsylvannia. somewhere semi close would be nice but not neccisary, i would be willing to pay a few bucks in shipping to avoid 2 or 300 dollars in rediculous charges.

    I have some old broken 14K jewelry I am want to sell for scrap. I see there is a jeweler in my town that buys gold (he's a jeweler, not a pawn broker). Anyway, has anyone ever done this before? I was curious as to the going rate for 14K was so I don't get completely ripped off. I have a couple of bracelets that are pretty substantial.

      I wouldn't sell it to a pawn or jeweler. They will clean you out and give you little in return. Your best bet to get true spot price for gold is on ebay. 14k is uaully just above 50% of the total weight. Get a postal scale, weigh it, determine about how much you want from there and put it on ebay. The main thing is find out exactly how much gold you have in that jewelry to get an idea how much it's worth at scrap if you choose to go the jeweler or pawn route and don't let them intimidate you with salesman jargon into selling it for much lower than it's worth.       Stay away from them. Do a search on rippoffreport.com or just Google your question about Cash4Gold and you will find that there are plenty of complaints against them.

      Instead go to a local jewelery store and see whether they are buying scrap gold. Find the oldest jeweler in town... there is a good reason why they have been around forever... they are respectable and have a good reputation.

      First of all, you can go there and get a quote. Secondly, Craigslist is a wonderful media for selling things in your area. Remember, whatever price they quote you has to leave room for profit. You might want to sell it on your own before you accept their gold quote. Don't let them push you in to it. Tell them you need to think about and talk to your mom/friend/uncle or whoever to give you an excuse as to why you can't answer them right away. Then try to sell them on your own.

    How to sell scrap gold in Highlands Ranch Colorado?
    I live in Highlands Ranch Colorado, 20 miles south of Denver and Littleton. I have a few old gold rings and some broken 14kt gold necklaces that I would like to sell. I have tried craig's list but only seem to get weird people calling me from pawn shops that want me to take my gold down to Denver to sell it for half of melt value. I was thinking about sending the scrap gold to that CASH 4 GOLD business that I saw on late night TV but when I read the on line reviews NO one had any thing nice to say about their business. Other refiners seem to have a ounce or two minimum for shipping and still charge 10% and send you a check in about two weeks. There is a Hotel Gold Buyer in town this week end and they have bad on-line review as well. Is there a local jewelry shop that would pay cash on the spot and not charge me 50% commission. What is a fair commission when I sell my gold? Please respond with usual percent of commissions or refining charge. Or if you know of a trusted gold refiner if I have to mail my GOLD, Thanks for your responses.

      I have checked into the Cash4Gold and it look like a big scam! The local pawn shop is only a good place to sell your gold if you need cash today and you don't mind getting 50% of value.     It seems like it's a smart time to sell and cash in. Only being the second day in April, Gold is now at 5.80 an ounce. Is now the time to sell?     I need some extra cash and want to get rid of a lot of useless broken jewelry. Are any of them reliable as they claim to be on tv?
    I am only 19, I have noticed most want you to be 21. Are all of them that way?

      If you choose to sell your gold as scrap, please do not use one of the outfits that advertise on TV--they will not give you the best price because they are marketing their services to the general public and not to in-the-tade individuals who are more knowledgeable.

      Send your gold to a reputable refiner. There are several who offer refining services to the jewelry, dental, etc. industries and that is where you would get the fairest shake for your scrap.

    I am thinking about taking some scrap gold to sell. What pitfalls and scams should I be aware of?
    I am going to the nearest city to take some10 and 14 ct.gold Broken bracelets ,chains, rings (that I found ) not anything great. Maybe a gold coin . When they say 0 an oz, Do they mean 0. Or .60. I hate to be dumb ,but I have no experience in this avenue. Please relate some insight, and somethings to watch out for. I checked better business bureau. I will be taking a friend , and will weigh gold before going. What else.? They refine their gold there they are a jewelry design in a good SHOPPING district serious info only.

      That would be 0 per ounce. Assuming it's solid gold jewelry you're dealing with. Most jewelry is sold at 14 ct. or 18 ct. I'm not sure what a buyer of scrap gold is looking for...perhaps 24 ct (which is pure gold)? What I do know is that the higher the carat of the gold, the more pure gold is in it, so the higher the value. Check the links on your chains and the inside of the rings for the ct. content. That way you can know going into your sale what you should be getting for it.

      The 1st link below looks like a good website for everything gold (including the current price per ounce around the world). The 2nd link is specific to selling scrap gold, which relates to you. Do as much homework as you can beforehand. That way it's less likely anyone can take advantage of you. Good luck!

      P.S. I just perused that 2nd link and it has GREAT TIPS on selling your scrap gold. Read the whole thing. It could be the difference between making some good money for yourself or not being paid what your jewelry is worth.

      I'd say the wisest things you can do are:

      1) take photos of all the items you're selling
      2) catalog their gold content
      3) remove any gems/jewels from settings, as well as other metals (like silver), if possible
      4) weigh all the gold and document it
      5) take the items to a jeweler OTHER than the one you're going to sell it at, and get an estimate of what it all could be worth
      6) make copies for yourself of any paperwork you fill out

    I read that I can get 75% more value if I sell it for retail as opposed to scrap. But, I can't find anywhere that will buy it for retail or even close to retail.

    Hello, everyone. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if scrap silver jewelry is worth anything. Don't laugh, I weighed it on a food scale, and it reads 480 grams or 1.09 ounces.     My husband is looking to sell a necklace he bought 12 years ago. It is 14k gold and weighs 28 grams. He bought it for 00 at a jewelry store. It has a unique lobster claw link and we have never seen anything like it elsewhere. He hasn't worn it in awhile and would like to sell it to get the our kids some presents for Christmas, but wants to make sure that he doesn't get ripped off. My question is this - I have researched online and found a formula for how much he should expect to make for 28 grams of 14k gold as scrap gold (4.17 is what it is worth and from what I can tell dealers will pay 80-90% so 1.34-2.75) - should we expect to get closer to what he bought it for seeing as it isn't really scrap?
