For sterling, the mark will be either the numbers 925 (meaning 92.5 % silver, which is sterling) or a "sterling" stamp with the words. • ANSWER:
The following I found for you on:
      http://www.finishing.com/191/49.shtml
It was submitted by Richard Alcor, Cushing, OK, USA

There are a number of methods that may be used. Reverse electroplating is generally fairly simple and can be done using an automotive battery charger, a stainless steel plate, a carbon rod (or another stainless steel sheet), a 5 gallon detergent bucket and some commonly available (and inexpensive chemicals). This method works well for certain types of scrap; clipped leads and ends for instance and heavy plated scrap. Whole PCB scrap COULD also be done this way, but you would need to first crush and burn to reduce the volume and get rid of waste materials. You can also use AR (Aqua Regia method), Cyanide Leach (or alternative using a product called Cyanide Leach Substitute or CLS), mercury, etc.

I generally use AR for everything. Processors, memory and clipped leads all provide excellent returns. I also do the rest of the PCB, after crushing and burning. Hard drives, in my experience, take so long to dismantle that they are worth more to me as dirty aluminum scrap than anything. If you spend the time to come up with a better method for retrieving the scrap from the read/write head and platters inside the drive, then they too may be profitable (a lot of people swear by them).

In my experience, whole PCB board of mixed type from mixed sources will provide around 1-3USD/lb profit after expenses using AR.

  6. QUESTION:
How do you know what your scrap gold is worth?
If you want to sell your scrap gold, how can you know you're getting a fair price?

    • ANSWER:
24 Karat is 1/24 pure gold by weight. Thus, 24K is considered pure gold.

If 24K is pure gold, then 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58% gold etc. Given an approx spot gold price of 00/oz., scrap value of One (1) gram of gold is as follows:

      10K .67 per gram.
      14K .49 per gram
      18K .64 per gram
      24K .93 per gram

I checked a few things selling on ebay. They are going for roughly about the same prices as shown in the above table.

So you need to weigh the item first, then do the math using the table above.

  8. QUESTION:
What do I need to know before I start selling scrap gold?
I want to start selling scrap gold, but I want to know who pays the most, and how safe it is.

    • ANSWER:
I found this blog that constantly updates with the current highest paying gold buyer. That is where I go to find today's highest buyer.

      Here is an excerpt:

"Selling scrap gold is a lot different than selling gold bars. Gold bars are the standard for gold trading today. Selling scrap gold is not quite the same though.

What is the different between selling scrap gold and selling gold bars?

Well, when you begin selling scrap gold, you will find that lots of people are willing to buy it. Why is that? Because they are wanting to pay you a very small amount to get your gold. They are profiting big time from this, when it is really you that should be profiting."

  9. QUESTION:
What the price on 10KT and 14KT scrap gold per gram?
Anyone know the answer if I want to scrap my 10KT and 14KT gold jewelery per gram. Serious answers and thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Prices vary daily. Check out the site below or one like it.

As of January 18, 2008 the following are typical (per troy ounce):

      10k karat Gold 0.10

      14k karat Gold 3.25

There are 31.103 grams per troy ounce, so divide the prices above by this number to get price per gram.

  10. QUESTION:
How much should i pay for scrap gold?
Would like to buy scrap gold but do not really know how much I shoud pay for the gram (10,14 and 18k) Would appreciate a knowledgeable person advise.

    • ANSWER:
It's about 4 an ounce and about .13 per gram(as of Dec. 24,2008).

      >In conlusion, you should by it for around .31 for the 10k, .825 for the 14k, and .35 for the 18k.<

It might also be a good idea to pay several percentiles less than these prices, otherwise you won't make too much money. No one should ever buy at market value for commodities.

      Instructions on Method:

"Separate your scrap gold into their various karat fineness (i.e. 10k, 14k or 18k). You may need a magnifying glass to see the number inscribed on the piece....."

"If you have any gold coins, they may have a numismatic (coin) value above their metal value, based on age, rarity, and condition. Take it to a coin dealer; you may be able to get more money that way.
Determine the gram weight of each group by using a gram scale. If you can only weigh by the ounce, convert to grams by multiplying by 28.35 (e.g. 2 oz. = 2 x 28.35 = 56.7 grams).
Determine today's price of gold. You can find this on the Internet[3], [4] or in your local newspaper. Fine gold as of this writing is about 0.00 per troy ounce. (A troy ounce equals 31.1 grams. This never changes.) The price of gold fluctuates according to supply and demand.
Divide today's gold price by 31.1 to get today's gold price per gram.
Multiply by the fineness of the gold. For each group of gold, divide the karat by 24, then multiply that number by today's gold price per gram. For example, if you have 10KT gold and the current price of gold is .94 per gram (0.00 / 31.1), then the price of your scrap gold is .94 x .4167 = .06 per gram.

      10KT = 10/24 = .4167
      14KT = 14/24 = .5833
      18KT = 18/24 = .750

Multiply the price per gram by the weight in grams. If you have 10 grams of 10KT gold and you calculated the price at .06 per gram, then your scrap gold is worth 10 x .06 = 0.59.

      Examples
If you have 5.0 grams of 14KT scrap and gold is 0.00 today, then 0.00 divided by 31.1 equals .9389 multiplied by .5833 (14KT) equals .88 per gram. .88 multiplied by 5.0 grams equals .40.
Now let's say you have 15.3 grams of 10KT gold scrap. 0 divided by 31.1 equals .9389 multiplied by .4167 (10KT) equals .06 per gram. .06 multiplied by 15.3 grams equals 4.52."-wikihow.com

  19. QUESTION:
Where in canada can I get above 97% of scrap value for gold?
I have a place here in Maryland that gives me 96% of the goldspot price on my scrap gold. In canada, gold goes for more an ounce. Im looking to maybe ship some out and get a little bit more for it. Does anyone know of a gold liquidator in canada??

    • ANSWER:
First, it is a very rare business that pays better than that. Paying more means giving up their profit margin. In general, only private individuals pay better than that. My own business pays slightly better, but only for coins - I am not buying scrap gold right now, and if I was, I would be paying less.
Second, while you do get more dollars for your gold in Canada, they are Canadian dollars. Spot gold is presently US20, which equals CAN95. Canadian dollars are worth slightly less than US dollars, and you will lose a little bit converting then to US dollars.

  20. QUESTION:
What's the price of scrap gold per ounce US dollars?
I have some scrap gold to sell and I don't want to be ripped off.

    • ANSWER:
Typically you will be able to sell scrap gold for a spot price... not the actual price it's trading for on the market (gold price is for future commodities)

You can use this tool for estimates:

  22. QUESTION:
How do I refine scrap gold jewelery into higher purity gold?
I have some 14 Karat gold jewelry, and I just wondered how you refine it to make it more pure. I heard that you can heat it up until it melts, and keep it hot, then add borax, and the impurities can be separated.

    • ANSWER:
unless you have the proper oven i would not do it on your own, gold melts at 1947, that temp is extremely dangerous. if its just a custom piece you want to make, bring it to a jeweller that does their own work, tell them you want to smelt it, they will take a few points for themselves of course, but you will get at least 90-95% of the purity. basically a middleman for a refiner. Being in the pawnbroking business for almost ten years i know 100% this is you best method to get you value! Pawn shops will give little, if your lucky per gram maybe max. (thats what i give) . A higher end jewellery store may put it on consignment and ask for 20%, and may even take years. In short, find a middle man for a refinery.

Where do I go to get this done? About how much does it cost? Can I use my own diamonds as well? I live in Iowa if that matters.

    • ANSWER:
I guess that any real jeweler can do this but the problem is to find the best one. In addition, you should know the exact precise weight of your chunk before he starts so you don't get cheated. Maybe there is a jewelers association which could guide you. I have never done any of this, but maybe someone will answer who has experience. Not a contract to be entered into lightly.

    • ANSWER:
If this is your own property and you are not in the trade or business of scrap gold, then you need to determine if the original cost of the item is less than the scrap value. If so, report the Sale on Schedule D. Your gain will be taxed at up to 28%.

If you are in the trade or business of scrap gold, all transactions are reported. Use Schedule C to show all money received and your cost of goods and other expenses. The net profit is subject to income tax, Social Security, and Medicare tax.

  34. QUESTION:
Can I make a profit from the scrap gold I purchased?
I purchased 5.3 grams of 14 karat gold from an auction for 124 dollars can I make a profit? Who should I take it to to get the most money?

    • ANSWER:
14 K gold is only 14/24 or 58.33% pure gold.
5.3 grams of 14 Karat gold is 3.09 grams of pure gold.
Spot gold at this moment is 55.70 per troy ounce or .37 per gram.
Translation: You paid [FAQ-ANSWER].76 less than spot for your gold. No dealer pays that much for scrap gold. The best a coin dealer will pay is about 90% of spot. Jewelers pay somewhat less. Pawn shops pay quite a bit less. Don't even bother with the "sell gold through the mail" places, which are generally the worst.

You paid too much to make an immediate profit. You will have to sit on it for a while and hope gold goes up more. Sorry.

  35. QUESTION:
How does a jewelry store determine how much to pay for scrap gold?
I have heard that some places don't pay very much compared to others. How can I tell it's a fair price?

    • ANSWER:
Look up the current market price for pure gold. Determine the gold content of your jewelry based on how many carets it is and the weight of the metal. 24 carat = 100% gold, 12 carat = 50%, etc. My understanding is that a fair price is 50% of market price based on the pure gold content of your jewelry. Ask the jeweler how he is determining what to pay. The honest ones won't hesitate to give you the answer. Gold is selling for 9.50 per ounce on the futures market right now.

I have a bunch of scrap gold from electronic test equipment (nuts and washers mostly) how do i sell it?
I pulled a bunch of gold scrap off of some test equipment that I scrapped and I need to know how to sell it and what it might be worth..

    • ANSWER:
Everything I have read confirms that selling your gold through the mail is nearly always a terrible idea, especially if you aren't absolutely sure what you are selling as far as exact weight and karat / fineness. If you need cash that urgently, check your local yellow pages for coin shops near you. The coin dealer will weigh your gold to the nearest tenth of a gram and determine the fineness of your gold while you watch, and then make you an offer on the spot that you can accept or decline. Since everything is done face to face, the chance of your getting ripped off is small, and you can get any questions answered immediately - Plus, you get paid right away.
I would not trust any of the sell-by-mail places because it's just too easy for them to offer you a fraction of the value. One such company, Empire Gold Buyers, has been spamming Yahoo Answers lately - I don't know anything about that specific company, but I always have to wonder about any company that stoops to spamming.

      ADDED LATER:
I see we have another spam response here. CashforgoldUSA just made my spammers to avoid list. This same person also responded to the following question (and yes, this is the same question that I linked to before):

  39. QUESTION:
Where will I get a better deal on scrap gold and silver?
Pawn shop or jeweler? I have some broken pieces and some I don't like & want to get rid of them. Which place will I get more cash for it?

    • ANSWER:
I would be guessing if I said Jeweller but that's what I think. You could get a better deal possibly from a shop or website that specializes in buying scrap metal. You should shop around though, check out what each will offer and you can always try to haggle and get a little more than what they offer.

  40. QUESTION:
how much would i get if i sell my scrap gold?
i know prices always fluctuate but i live in new york and i have a bunch of gold hoop earrings, some old necklaces.. and i have a name plate ring and nameplate necklace that were both very expensive. How much do you think i would get for it?

    • ANSWER:
It will depend on the weight (heaviness) and carat weight of each of the items (10k, 14k, 18k) that will determine the overall price.

I work in NY and I actually just scrapped some old earrings and a broken bracelet and an old class ring...made several hundred dollars off of everything and it was mostly 14k gold.

      Good luck!

  41. QUESTION:
I work at a jewelry store. What laws if any should I know about buying scrap gold from customers.?
Do I need to keep a journal of all transactions, receipts, or can I give cash out without any transactions shown.
Do I have to keep what I buy for any amount of time or can I scrap right away.

    • ANSWER:
Keep a record of the seller's ID, how much you paid and when. Reason being is that you might be buying swag and you don't want to get nabbed for recieving stolen property.

  42. QUESTION:
What is the difference between scrap gold and bullion gold?

    • ANSWER:
Scrap gold can be any kind of gold that you no longer desire, but it is normally not located in large amounts. For instance, old gold jewelry and gold coins may be considered scrap gold since they are not worth a great deal on their own.

Gold bullion refers to a bulk capacity of gold. Gold bullion is traded in commodity markets in the shape of ingots, bars, or coins. Unlike money, gold bullion is appreciated by its purity and its mass.

That is the difference between both of them. Hope that helps.

  44. QUESTION:
Is it better to sell scrap gold to a jewelry store?
I have a large amount of gold that I got after my Granmother died and would like to cash some in. Is it better to go to a jewelry store or one of those online gold places? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If it's scrap gold, personally I think it's better to go directly to a refiner (aka, online gold buying places) You want to make sure you pick one that is an actual refiner though, because there are many imitators. If you sell to a jewelry store or pawn shop, you gold will likely end up at a refiner anyway, so cut out the middle man. If you wanted to compare how much you get you can use this calculator

  47. QUESTION:
Have you recently sold any of your scrap gold?
What did you sell, and how much money did you get?

    • ANSWER:
The price you get really depends on the quality of your gold (10K , 14K ) and the quantity. The more you are selling, typically the more you will get per dwt (pennyweight)

  48. QUESTION:
Have any of you sent scrap pieces of gold for cash?
I responded to an ad on tv where they would "send you payment by return mail" for sending in pieces of scrap gold that you may have around the house. They sent me the pre-paid envelope and I sent them a few pieces of broken jewelry and have not heard from them since. Have any of you had similar experiences? I guess I will have to chalk it up to "live and learn."

    • ANSWER:
No, I never have heard of that. Do you have their name, telephone # and mailing address? Call first, then if they do not respond, turn them into your State's Attorney General. They have a fraud division.

Next time just look for someone local who buys scrap gold. You can look on Yahoo Yellow Pages.
