Sell Antique

Selling antique furniture online can be extremely profitable for antique dealers who have a presence on the Internet. Last month alone, the phrase aantique furniturea was typed into Google's search engine 673,000 times. If only one-percent of those search prospects landed on your website, that would equate to 6,730 highly targeted and qualified prospects.

Now the majority of antique websites won't close the sale when these prospects arrive. And much of that has to do with a poorly converting website. Without getting into lots of details about why most websites fail to close the deal, let's talk about web video.

Statistics show that video will hold your prospects attention 10 times longer than a website with text and photos. As of this writing, 8 billion videos are downloaded and watched each month from the Internet. And with over 70% of the U.S. population using high speed Internet, it only makes sense to start your own Antiques TV show.

Having your own Antiques TV will allow you to showcase and talk about your antiques in a way never possible. Photographs and text alone simply can't do what video can.

All you need to get started is a video camera, some basic lighting, a microphone and some basic video editing software. There is a slight learning curve involved, but it's something you can learn over the course of 2-3 days.

Your videos don't have to be super aHollywooda slick. In fact, the more personable you are, the likely you'll be able to sell more of your antique furniture. I've found that people relate more to people who are like themselves. If you make a mistake, laugh it off and keep it on the video. This gives your website personality and it's a trait people will come to love about watching your Antiques TV show.

QVC and the Home Shopping Network are moving thousands of furniture pieces each month through their tv shopping network. Not only are they moving it through the TV sets, they're also moving a ton of pieces via their website, which also broadcasts the clips online as well. With the Internet, you can easily setup your own show with your store as the backdrop. You can then easily have someone follow you around the store with a video camera as you talk about the various pieces in the store.

So why don't you start looking at starting your own Antiques TV Show? If you'd like to learn more about using the Internet to sell antique furniture, take a look at Antique Profits to learn how to quickly and easily get your antique show up and running.

Where is a good place to sell antique china and cutlery?
We are due to move house in the next 4 weeks and have a collection of antique china, cutlery and other pieces. It has been handed down our family but has no sentimental value to me as I tend to treasure photographs and memories more than anything. We will have no space to store it at our new home and I am wondering where the best place to sell these types of things would be. Any knowledge welcome?

  2. QUESTION:
Where is the best place to appraise or sell antique wooden Leblanc clarinet?
What is the best place to appraise or sell antique clarinet?
I inherited an old Clarinet from my uncle. It's a wooden Leblanc & I believe it is late 1950's or early 1960's. It's in excellent condition & I am told it is rare. I am trying to sell it but I would like to know what it is worth first. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best place to find out what this clarinet is worth? Thank you in advance!

    • ANSWER:
50's/60's isn't an antique. That's actually pretty modern as clarinets go. I play on a 1920's Conn that also isn't an antique.

Take it to your local clarinet repair tech and he/she can tell you the model and age as well as the playing condition. Some of the Leblanc Paris clarinets are incredibly good playing professional instruments.

Most have a value in playing condition between 0-600. This doesn't include the lower Vito or Noblet models. Some older Leblanc Paris clarinets can be worth well over 00.

  4. QUESTION:
Is this a good time to sell antique furniture?
I used to have a antique furniture business. I would rent spaces in antique malls and did quite well up to 2002 when the economy went downhill. I've been thinking antique furnitures are actually good practical items to sell instead of brand new one that are not as nicely made. People need furniture, nice ones too. Do you think people will be interested to buy?

    • ANSWER:
It's always a good moment to sell antique furniture, but it depends a lot on your niche. If we're looking at expensive furniture, then this may not be the perfect time to reestablish your business. If no, why not? Just remember you need good online and onsite marketing in the first phase. Best of luck!

  11. QUESTION:
Where is the best place to sell some antique furniture?
I have some matching antique furniture. Where is the best place to sell it? A consignment shop? Advertise it? I don't know.

    • ANSWER:
Check your Yellow Pages for auction companies. Find one that is familiar with antiques, and see if they will sell the furniture for you on a consignment basis. They will charge you a percentage of the selling price.

For this percentage, they will advertise your pieces to get buyers on site the day of the auction. They also should have a good idea of what your item should sell for.

If there are two bidders who want your items, who knows what they will sell for, but I do guarantee that they will sell to the highest bidder. Antique dealers attend auctions all the time to buy antiques to resell.

Unless you know what your furniture is worth, or want do a lot of research to find out, I think an auction is the way to go

If you take it to an antique dealer, he will try to buy it as cheaply as he can to maximize his profit. An auctioneer is going to sell it for as much as he can to maximize his percentage of commission.

Where or to whom might I sell antique Japanese Netsukes?
I recently acquired about 14 antique (19c) Japanese Netsukes from my father, who inherited them from an 88 yr old lady about 3 years ago. We are looking to sell them to collectors or dealers, but aren't exactly sure how to find these people. Any ideas??

    • ANSWER:
First, you need to take them to a dealer who knows about them. That way you'll have an idea of what they're worth before you sell them. This person may also know someone who would like to buy them. A dealer will probably pay 40-50% of what they're worth to a collector.

  19. QUESTION:
Can anyone please give me some tips on house to sell an item through an antique dealer?
I would like to sell some antique items that used to belong to my mother. Of course, I know of the big auction houses in London. However, I don't know what it is to deal with a big auction house. What traps should a novice like myself look out for? Every trade has its tricks, and I want to avoid being taken advantage of. How much of a commision does an auction house generally ask for? What are the hidden fees that are vaguely mentioned on their internet sites. I see that there might be various miscellaneous fees, but nothing is ever spelled out. This makes me nervous and suspicious to even contact such an establishment to sell an item.

Any advice on how to deal with an auction house would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Well all you need to do is make your studies first, because lets be honest when you or i get possesion of an antique item, we dont know anything about it, and thats how houses of antiques makes profit by taking advantage of our unwillingly ignorance, therefore they can make you belive whatever they want and pay you cheap and sell for a lot, what i suggest is to ask around check the year of the stuff, condition, market etc... check on auction websites they have lots and lots of antiques it will give you a price range.

Year, condition, is very critical when you go to a house of antiques make sure you know the answers because if you slip on one they will know that you dont know jack and you got valuable things on your hands.

  20. QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell antique/collectible records?
Most of them have the plastic still on them with the cardboard case.
I have a couple hundred of them and want to sell them. Some like Berry Manilow, beetles, johnny cash...

    • ANSWER:
You could look up a record dealer in the nearby area and call them to ask how much the records are selling for. Don't tell them that you're selling, rather hint that you're buying. They're more likely to give you the actual price since they would probably try to buy lower than they would sell. Along with that you could look on eBay to see what similar items sold for and compare the prices you got from the two different sources.

Public libraries often have databases that help you look up the current values of items like records and collectibles. If they don't have databases then I'm sure they have books. Some of them may not be in demand right now, which would lower the price and you may want to hang on to them and wait for demand to increase, which drives price up.

      Good luck!

  26. QUESTION:
What is the best way to determine the value of and then sell antique coins? ?
Most appraisers are dealers, so I don't think I'd receive a fair valuation. Also how to know if the weight of the gold or silver is worth more than the antique value of the coin.

    • ANSWER:
If these are US coins get a copy of "A Guide Book of United States Coins", also known as the Red Book. In it is the net weight of pure gold for each denomination of gold coin which you can use to calculate melt value of the coins. In it is also basic grading guidelines and retail pricing for the coins in various grades. The pricing is a little stale but should work for what you are trying to do.

I would also like to say, contrary to what you think, the vast majority of dealers will treat you fairly and provide you with as accurate a grade and value of a coin as they can. Just remember that grading coins is subjective and that a dealer will generally quote you a wholesale price and not a retail price unless you tell him otherwise. After all he is in the business to make a profit and put bread on his own table. You are his wholesale source for inventory.

      Thank you and good luck.

  36. QUESTION:
What is the easiest way to sell antique furniture?
Is there a place on-line, or should it be advertised locally?
I'm a total newbie at this; help me out ok?
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
You should first have your furniture appraised by either an auctioneer or antique appraiser. You should always take the time to find out about the history of what you have, and the only way to do that is to find someone who knows to give you information. It's honestly better to have antiques appraised by more than one person, and a really good appraiser will usually recommend you have someone else who specializes in certain furniture periods to have a look. If you haven't already, then please begin to take care of the item or items. Keep it/them in as good of a condition as possible. Once you know a little bit about the piece or pieces that you have, THEN you will want to begin advertising the item(s) to sell. You can either sell the furniture yourself, OR you can have someone sell it for you. If you're only selling one piece then you may consider posting bulletins around your town or placing an add in the newspaper. If you have more than one piece then you may want to go to a consignment shop; they generally let you set the price of what you are wanting to sale and items that don't sale can be reclaimed. The thing with auctions is that they guarantee a sale, BUT that does not mean that the item that's up for bids gets sold for the amount you want it to, that is unless you set a reserve price, meaning that the item can't sell for any less than the price you specified. If you're looking to get rid of something really quickly then auction is the best bet. Just make sure that you speak to an auctioneer or someone that can tell you about the piece or pieces. I really really recommend you reading the text at this site: http://www.antiquesroadshowinsider.com/selling_antique_furniture_auctioneer.html
It tells you about how to find the right auctioneer or appraiser and what questions to ask to find out the most about your item(s).

  37. QUESTION:
What's the best way to sell an antique?
I have a couple antique peices that I'm trying to help my mom sell, but I don't know how to go about it. I called a couple small shops near her house, but none seemed interested in buying. Is that just a sign of the economy? Any resources would be appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
The shops may be overwhelmed with inventory right now. Your asking price may have played a part in their interest too. Craigslist is a possibility but do you want to deal with strangers coming to the house? Ebay is also a possibility but can you handle shipping? You did not say what you are trying to sell so we don't know if its furniture or something else and that makes a difference. If you cannot ship you need to look locally. Contact a few auction houses and see if they have an interest. Understand their terms before letting them take anything to sell. Most local TV stations and newspapers now have free ad listings so you might give those a try. I would strongly suggest you continue to check back with the shops you went to and maybe a few others and ask them what is a reasonable price to expect from any shop. They have to make a profit so don't expect them to pay you retail value. The economy makes a difference so things don't sell for as much or as often now. If you can hold on to these items until things pick up you should see the value go back up. If the condition is poor or needs repairs don't expect much even in a good economy. Antiques are valued based on condition and desiribility meaning do people actually want it. Some things are old but not valuable so you need to be realistic. If you know you have good items then you need to be able to wait for that right customer just like a dealer does. It takes time.

  38. QUESTION:
Best place to sell antique Voigtlander camera?
Found a 1957 German Made Voigtlander Vitessa T in pristine condition and two lenses and a range finder. All leather boxes for everything and a strap. They made cameras all the way back to dauggerotypes, so Ebay might be a little unspecialized a market for something like this. Are there any better places to sell this?

    • ANSWER:
Online? Rangefinderforum.com and photo.net have classified sections where you can sell cameras. However since these are community websites, becoming a member simply to sell an item might not be so succesful (scammers do that to so people are cautious), however it is definitely worth a shot.

And if you own a rangefinder like the Vitessa T you probably own or have an interest in one or both of these online communities.

If it works well as you say, I suppose - would be fair, but not many will be interested because the older the fridge, the more electricity they used, and even 15 year old parts are impossible to find when it does break down. Good luck though.

  40. QUESTION:
how do you sell antiques to an antique store? what do you do? where?
ive recently acquired some beautiful antiques, which i have no room for, how to sell them to an antique dealer?

    • ANSWER:
I used to work in an antique store, this is what I would advise,
Take your item to different shops and see what they say.
I would also travel to a persons home to look at the item. Most antique dealers will check your item out if it's too heavy for you to carry out.
Also check out your item on the internet to make sure it's o.k.
To sell, be aware that you have a price in your head and so does the buyer.
Do not fall for the "i can only give you the best price thing"
Get lots of estimates. Ask for referrals and ask your antique dealer how they got into the business, most are happy to tell you.
      Good luck

  42. QUESTION:
Where is a good place to sell antique books and dolls online?
I am cleaning out the attic and its a big job. 120 years of stuff no one has touched. It's been added to, but never touched. Help me!

    • ANSWER:
Probably Ebay...but you may want to consider calling a doll auction house first (theriaults; withingtons; sotheby; Julia's; etc....) They can give you estimates and if they are high price dolls-you may want to just go through the aution house (safer/more money). If they are true antiques -dont use a random auction house (in the area)....make sure its in a DOLL auction. There will be more specialized population of buyers and your doll will bring a better price. If you post pictures of them on Ebay's doll forum-some of the ladies there will help you ID them too.
      Good luck

  43. QUESTION:
Where would I go to sell antique wood?
We are disassembling a "smokehouse" that was built around the turn of the century (1906) and know that the wood is in excellent condition. A little planing and the wood is beautiful and can be recycled into cabinets, etc...

    • ANSWER:
Look up the salvagers in your area because they will give you the best price and probably already have people like me on their lists of "looking to buy". You can also look up local restorers, wood workers, interior designers, or furniture makers who may either have a need for your wood, know who does or where you can get the best price in your area.

    • ANSWER:
In my area, there are stores that take items on consignment and antique malls that do the same. They do take a percentage but items sell at much higher prices than I see on E-bay. Check in your area for consignment stores and antique malls.

  50. QUESTION:
any suggestions on best place to sell antique Rosenthal Germany china set?
I have either 8 or 12 (can't remember at the moment) place setting with lots of extras; coffee pot, gravy bowl, serving bowls, ashtrays, etc. Don't know if it better to sell piece by piece or as a whole set?

    • ANSWER:
There are several free ways of doing it, craigslist was mentioned and that is good if you don't mind dealing direct with the buyer. You might also consider some of the online sites like blujay or ecrater. They allow you to list your items free and have no final fee after the sale. There are so many sites now you can pick and choose but be careful about who you choose. Look to make sure they are actually getting traffic and results. Ask a few sellers in the forums. Antique Dealers are also good but - times are slow for them right now and they must buy low to be able to get a profit. Besides craigslist you can try kijiji or oodle to list for free. Again you must deal direct with the buyer and you will have to meet them somewhere. Deal with care and caution.
