With the price of gold on a steady climb in the last few years, many people think now is the time to sell gold coins they've been collecting. Whether it's right for you depends on a number of criteria, including how badly you need the money, what you'll do with the profits and whether a long-term gold coin strategy is best for you.
Gold coins are usually made in one troy ounce weight, making it easier for coin dealers, governments and collectors to easily and accurately value gold coins regardless of where or when they were minted. The exceptions are the seldom seen and truly rare gold coins that are a hundred years old or more. These can have an inflated value dependent more on their beauty and scarcity than on their gold content alone.
If you have gold coins such as South African Krugerrands, Australian Kangaroos or Canadian Maple Leafs, it's easy to find out what they are worth to collectors by visiting one of the many sites that buy and sell gold coins. If you sell to one of these sites, keep in mind that you won't receive what the coin is actually worth. Remember that these companies are buying and selling gold to make a profit so they need a margin for mark-up. However you can make a decent amount if your coins are in good shape.
Some things that will affect the value when you sell gold coins include:
a Condition of the coin. Is it in mint or near mint condition? A worn or damaged coin isn't worth as much.
a Do you have the authentication paperwork? Some dealers won't buy a gold coin if you don't have the certification that proves it is genuine because it is harder to resell. Forged coins are also a problem, and dealers do not want to get caught up in this.
a Do you still have the presentation box the coin came in? This can also affect the value of a gold coin, particularly if it is one of the coins prized for its beauty as well as its intrinsic value.
If you prefer to sell gold coins locally, you can work with a coin dealer in your area. Some of them will take your coins on commission. The downside to this arrangement is that neither of you make any money until the coin is actually sold. The up side is that the dealer can take the time to contact potentially interested parties and hold out for a good price.
Of course, none of these options will work for you if you need to sell gold coins and get the cash right away. If you are strapped for cash and don't want to wait around, try selling your gold coins directly to a company that specializes in buying gold of any kind. These companies are also often refineries so the gold they buy is melted down and used to make new gold products. Since gold coins are nearly pure gold, you can easily check current gold prices and get an idea of the current price of the gold in your coin. A gold buyer will typically give you at least 65 percent of the current gold value for your coin. It's a quick and easy way to make some money without having to have your coins authenticated or wait around for the right buyer.
The bottom line is that if you need cash now it's probably a good time to sell gold coins since the price of gold is so high.

QUESTION:
Is it true when you sell a gold coin or a bar of gold you pay capital gains plus 28% collectible taxes?
I have been told when you sell collectibles you pay both a capital gains tax and a 28 percent collectibles tax to the IRS. Gold is a collectible metal and coins are also collectible.-
ANSWER:
When you sell a collectible such as gold or rare coins for a profit, you generally pay a capital gains tax of 28% on the profit, not a capital gains tax plus and additional 28%.

QUESTION:
How to sell a gold coin?
I have acquired a spanish gold doubloon, in excellent condition, that I'm trying to sell. I have absolutely no idea how to go about getting it appraised, let alone how to sell it. I would feel more comfortable selling it in person and i do NOT want to pawn it. Any information you could give me would be helpful, thanks!
i just found out its actually an Austrian 1915 4 ducat gold piece.-
ANSWER:
Go to a coin shop. They will appraise and possibly buy it. Pawn shops, by the way, will buy merchandise outright, without you having to pawn something. However, you won't get the best price for your item at a pawn shop. When I was desperate enough to try to pawn some gold jewelry, the pawn shops told me that they'd only pay the scrap gold value according to the weight. So if a coin is old and/or valuable, you want to go to a coin/jewelry shop that buys from the public. DON'T go to Cash4Gold, they will only pay you a fraction of the scrap value.

QUESTION:
How much would this gold coin sell for? It's made in 1904 and it says "twenty dollars". Is it worth more now?
On the front it has a head with "Liberty" on the person's crown. There are 13 stars going around the coin.On the back it "United States of America Twenty Dollars" with "in god we trust"...
I don't know what it's called it's just a 20 dollar coin made in 1904! my grandad gave it to me. how much would it be worth now?
-
ANSWER:
Assuming that the coin is genuine, it is worth a lot more. Compare it to the coins shown in the link below (navigate using the large arrows). That will give you a rough idea of condition.Based on gold content alone, it is worth at least 00. If it is in near-perfect condition, possibly more.
Do not rub the coin. Only handle it by the edges. Never clean a coin as it destroys value.

QUESTION:
Where to sell gold coin?
I ws given one ounce gold coins years ago and was wondering where I would be able to sell them. I am guessing I should be able to get what ever the current price of gold for them.-
ANSWER:
You will get more $$$ if you list and sell them on ebay. Some tips that may be helpful to you……….
Be honest and accurate in your descriptions – One-sentence descriptions are for lazy sellers. One paragraph should be sufficient for most items. My general guideline is the more expensive (read higher priced) an item, the more you should ‘talk it up.’ It won’t be time wasted. Use lots of adjectives in your descriptions. Adjectives make prose and your items come alive. Without them, prose is dull and your items less appealing. Just add a little ‘sizzle’ and even have a little fun with it. In short, make your descriptions stand out above the crowd.
Be professional - use good English with no spelling errors
PICTURES:
ALWAYS include at least one picture, more pictures for higher priced items. Make sure your pictures are clear. There are far too many pictures on ebay that are dark. If prospective buyers can’t see your items clearly, your items, more than likely, will not fetch the closing prices they deserve. To remove darkness, use any photo editor to add some brightness and a wee bit of contrast.
Eliminate clutter. Prospective bidders don’t want to know what kind of cereal you eat or what kind of kitchen table or bedspread you have. Use a SOLID backdrop when taking your pictures as you want to focus all of the attention on your item. In short, the one and only thing you want in your picture is the item being sold. A SOLID white or light blue backdrop is best. However, there are certainly items that won’t show well on a light backdrop. In these cases, use a darker backdrop. And for gosh sake, don’t even think of using a plaid blanket as a backdrop for your pictures as I once saw on ebay. You should also crop the photos in your photo editor. Good pictures can add 5% to 10% to final closing prices.
GOOD DESCRIPTIONS + GOOD PICTURES = GOOD PRESENTATION. This is what you should strive for.
COMMUNICATION:
GOOD Communication is a must - Always notify buyers when you mail their items. It is not only a courtesy you would want and expect as a buyer but it is also both good customer service and good business practice. After all, you are the 'President & CEO' of your 'company' running your business but using ebay as your selling medium. In short, conduct your business so that it reflects well on you as a person. Treat everyone as a human being, not a living being and this includes people who have inquiries about your items, not just your buyers. Prospective buyers making these inquiries could ultimately be the winning bidders and possible repeat customers.

QUESTION:
If I sell my gold coin do I need one of those fancy hard cases with the barcode thing on it? How do I get one?
I just have a soft, floppy plastic case.. The coin is in great condition but I don't think someone will buy it unless it's in those fancy cases..Also do I need some sort of proof of authenticity or will the buyer know it's real when they get the coin?
and do I need proof for the grade for the coin?
I don't really know how this all works so pls help lol
-
ANSWER:
First go to a couple of coin dealers in your area and ask them what grade they would give the coin and how much they would offer. Unless you know what you are doing this is probably the best way for you to sell the coin. After seeing the coin dealers you will have a fair idea of the wholesale value of the coin. If the value is less than 0 then it would not be worth getting the coin certified and graded. Sell it to the dealer who offered you the most money.
Another option is to contact members of a local coin club to see if anyone would be interested in helping you determine a value for the coin or buying it. Sometimes you will get a little better offer from a collector than from a dealer but you will still not get full retail.
If you want a shot at full retail and the coin is worth some real bucks look into national coin auction houses such as Heritage or Bowers and Merena. They could get the coin certified and encapsulated (called slabbed in the hobby) for you. Otherwise see if one of the dealers would be willing to send in the coin for you and auction if off on ebay. You will want to stick with the three major grading services: NGC, PCGS or ANACS.
Raw unslabbed coins will sell just easily as a slabbed coin if you are talking to the right people. Those, like you, who do not know the hobby or coin business will feel much more comfortable buying the coin if it has been certified and slabbed. Many hobbiest are comfortable with a raw coin and will be happy to talk to you about your coin. It just depends on who you are talking to.
A good source for local dealers and local coin clubs is the American Numismatic Association web site, money.org. You can do a search for both there.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
Have a gold coin I want to sell- good idea?
Royal Australian Mint Uncirculated Two Hundred Dollar Coin 1984
Apparently, (google) it is now worth 5AUS= 0NZD
Is this good?
Well my questions are these:
I plan to sell my gold at one of those stalls at my mall. Are they good?
Advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Its has 10g of gold
22 carat-
ANSWER:
I'm not familiar with the coin but you can judge for yourself if you know how much gold it contains.
At the present time Gold is 09.60 ( US Dollars ) per troy ounce. Yes, I came across a blog describing the coin ........ Composition is 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. Edge reeded. Weight 10 grams. Diameter is 24 mm. ...................
So, it contains 9.167 grams of pure gold.......1 Troy ounce equals 31.103 grams.....So, Gold is priced at .3199 ( US dollars ) per gram . ....9.167 times .3199 equals $ 415.44 ( US dollars ) that is the value of the gold your coin contains. .....5.44 US dollars equals 8.05 Australian dollars.
All the values are there, so you can check my math.
Unfortunately most dealers seek a unreasonable amount of profit. They buy low then sell that very same coin for a much higher price....that is the disadvantage of going to a dealer.

QUESTION:
Where, How do I sell gold coins at market value?
Will a bank buy gold coins for market value?
Or should I sell to a coin dealer?
Thanks.-
ANSWER:
How do you define market value?
Coin dealers will pay 80% to 90% of the value of the metal or 50% - 60% of catalog value, whichever is greater. Banks, at least in the US, don't buy gold. In Mexico, banks buy Mexican gold coins at about 90% of the metal value but don't buy non-Mexican coins.
Selling them yourself on eBay might be better, but then you have to consider eBay's fees.

QUESTION:
How do I sell my rare gold coin?
I want to sell my 1908 Gold half eagle. its 0.900 pure 21kt. gold and is 0.29 oz . Do I sell it for just want the gold is worth, or should I factor in that its very old and very rare? and where should I start the asking price at? I know its Genuine its rare and its in perfect condition but I really dont know what to expect out of it.-
ANSWER:
Both the Liberty Head and the Indian Head Half Eagle designs were made in 1908 with both made in Philadelphia and the latter made in Denver and San Francisco as well. There are also proof versions of both designs. The coins contain 0.2419 troy ounces of pure gold which is currently worth about £190, and the coin is probably worth a bit more than that while the proof versions would be worth a significant premium. Certified and slabbed coins would be worth more. You can check the link below to search for UK coin dealers to sell your coin or get some offers. Just so you know, coin dealers typically keep a 3% to 5% fee from the value of the gold. I hope that helps.

QUESTION:
Where can I sell my gold coin in NYC?
I would like a dependable place and a safe transaction like meet in person, From a reputable company. Does anyone know of any companies I could meet with about my coin? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I would prefer not to do anything over the web or mail.Thank you for any input
-
ANSWER:
There's dozens of gold and silver dealers in NYC in storefronts all around 6th Avenue in the 40s, mostly on 47th and 48th St. (see 1st link, below)Just take your coin there and go from store to store to see who'll give you the best deal, but be careful that no one switches your coin on you while you're not looking, so DON'T let it out of your sight.
Of course, depending on what kind of coin it is, it's possible that it might be even more valuable to coin collectors than to gold dealers, so check into that, too (see 2nd link, below).

QUESTION:
Should I Sell My Gold Coin?
Ok, my name is Saige and I'm trying to make 2000$ to be able to go to a DC trip next year... I have a one ounce gold coin that my Dad gave me when I was maybe 3. He doesnt live with us anymore and isnt part of my life. What Im wondering is should i sell it? that would make getting money so much easier? thanks lots for helping!-
ANSWER:
If your trip to DC is next year, you might want to wait to sell it. Gold prices are likely to go up.Spot price of gold is just below 00/oz right now, but there is a premium on coins, so you might do better. Sell it to a coin shop or a private collector, rather than a pawn shop or one of those cash/gold storefront places. They will probably not pay you fair value for your coin.
You can look up the price of gold anytime here:
http://www.kitco.com/
Although as I said earlier, coin prices tend to run higher.

QUESTION:
What should I know about selling a gold coin on eBay?
I have bought and sold many times on eBay, but what should I know about selling a gold piece worth 00? Is it enough to set a high starting bid, require PayPal, and supply big, sharp photographs of the coin? Is it worth the expense to have the coin professionally graded, sealed, and certified first? What ripoffs should I be aware of?-
ANSWER:
Certified coins tend to bring more in the coin market, including eBay. There are two services I recommend: 1) PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and 2) NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation).Good closeup photos that you can take with a digital camera are a must. Be sure to use the "macro" setting and no flash when you take the pics. Position your light source (a lamp is fine) off to the side somewhat of the coin.
Before you set your starting bid, see what coins like yours have sold for recently. Use the "Completed Listings" check box located on the left panel of the listings. Prices that show in green are for items that actually sold at those prices.
One more thing... Give some thought to your write-up. A gold coin is special. Learn something of the history behind these coins. Your twenty dollar gold piece, also known as a "double eagle", is much more interesting than a mere bullion coin. It doesn't hurt to romance the sale a bit! Check my web site for some ideas: http://www.valuable-coin-stories.com/us-gold-coin.html

QUESTION:
I want to sell a valuable gold cutlery set in London. Where should I go?
Many shops buy/sell gold coins or jewellery but I can't find one that buys gold cutlery. Can anyone help me?-
ANSWER:
Gold is a soft metal and makes a poor edge. For it to be functional cutlery, there can't be a high gold content/carat value in it.You can try jewelers who melt down old jewelry but, be prepared if it doesn't fetch the price you're expecting. Extracting what little gold I suspect is in the cutlery might make them worth less than what you thought.

Gold prices, adjusted for inflation, remained the same for SIX HUNDRED YEARS until the invention of mass e-mailing in the 1990s made possible the 'corraling-in' of millions of hapless new customers...Gold will be trading for somewhere back between 0/oz & 7/oz sooner rather than later, so now is as good a time as any to sell....folks who bought gold in 1492 (the year Columbus "discovered" America) at the peak price of ,400 an ounce are STILL waiting for it to "go back up", LOL!

QUESTION:
With gold high is it better to hold onto a low mintage gold coin, like the 2008 W Gold Eagle or sell now?
I am wondering if the price say for the quarter ounce Gold Eagle at ,000 since it is the lowest mintage or is the high price of gold keeping it that high and when gold drops the price will reflect this.-
ANSWER:
I can not seem to find in any price guides the mintage figure for the 2008W 1/4 ounce gold eagle. I do know there are 2 of them one is a proof and the other is what the mint calls burnished. The regular uncirculated one has no mint mark. The high cost of gold has driven the value up of all gold coins even common ones. Most modern gold coins except some proof collector ones go up and down due to the value of gold, the proof cost more so have a collector value, there is also a lot less of them. I really don't expect gold to take a real nose dive this year. The economy is still in real bad shape and people are buying gold as a hedge on inflation as well it is a good investment right now. You need to keep an eye on the market which is easy for you can get the spot price of gold on line. It would not hurt to check with coin dealers to see what they are paying, for they do not pay spot usually. You can get an idea of the market from the dealers. I would not sell now but that is only my opinion, that could change tomorrow if I see the market changing.

QUESTION:
Where you can you sell gold coins for the highest amount?
I am in beverly hills/west hollywood.-
ANSWER:
http://goldkit.com/ this is a place that claims to pay highest prices for gold, and you can mail it to them. If you want to deal with someone local, it's best to call coin dealers or pawn shops. Most places will pay the current market price, which can be found at http://www.kitco.com/charts/livegold.html and many other websites.

QUESTION:
Is now a good time to sell gold and/or silver, or will the price go up more?
I have about an once of gold and a couple of silver and I was thinking about selling. Is it a good time or will the price continue to go up. The gold I have is a gold coin. Is it more profitable to sell it as a coin, or for the amount it's worth in gold. Also, were is a good place to sell metals.-
ANSWER:
Some people say it will go up higher... but many people think it's too high already. There is probably a 0 "anxiety tax" on it. It just depends on the market... so if the US economy continues to tank, then gold looks like a better investment and will continue to go up. http://www.goldintomoney.com has more information on selling your gold
