     I would strongly suggest checking out the Silver and Gold Exchange before selling gold or silver to ANYONE. I did a great deal of research, online and offline, and learned a lot about this business. I checked pawn shops, jewelers, "gold parties", hotel "buying events as well as the online buyers, including the "as seen on tv" guys. I found that the Silver and Gold Exchange paid more than anyone else I could find. I liked the fact that they post the prices they pay per gram (beware of the places that quote in pennyweight/DWT) on a live price chart at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com I also checked out their Better Business Bureau report and found they have never had a single complaint as opposed to HUNDREDS of complaints some other companies have!      Pawn shops or places where they sell old jewelry, but they may have to melt them down no matter how precious yours are. Others will sell them as is, if they're in tip top shape and are antique.

     Ex: 0 you will be lucky to get cash. Don't send them out by mail, you'll never see your cash money.

     Also put an ad on craigslist, but have someone WITH YOU go meet them in a restaurant or someplace public, for collectors, you could get lucky!

      It all depends on what you have. If your jewelry is in nice shape and at least 14kt or 18kt gold, many estate jewelry buyers will express interest and pay a bit better.

      If the jewelry is damaged, or common pieces you still see in chain stores, you might as well sell it for gold weight...and in that case watch the gold markets for a nice gold spike because gold is paid on closing price.

      Also, look into some private jewelry stores. Sometimes they do consignment for a percentage and you could maximize your dollar out of that.

    I have a lot of gold jewelry, some of which is damaged but suspect that it is worth more melted down than in its current form. Where does one go to sell gold like this without being ripped off? If your advice is to use Cash4Gold, then please don't bother responding.

      You are never going to get market value for your gold. A lot of people forget that it is a business and there are expenses. About 2% of the gold immediately evaporates upon melting, market price may drop, rent, assay fees, permits, labor, taxes, etc etc. Also market prices are based on 1,000 ounces of bullion (bars, coins etc) on a trading level.

      If you have one ounce of jewelry, and gold is ,000 a ounce you don't get ,000 for that jewelry. Most jewelry is 14k gold and that is only 58.5% pure gold.

      10k- 41.7% Gold
      14k- 58.5% Gold
      18k- 75% Gold
      22k- 91.7% Gold

      I am a refiner and diamond buyer in Florida, and will give you the information you need to sell your items without getting ripped off.

      Gold (Based on todays price of 3/oz)- 10k- gram, 14k- gram, 18k- gram.

      Silver- 925/Sterling- a ounce.

      This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

      I pay around 6% more than the numbers I listed above for 100 grams of gold OR LESS, if you 100-200 grams I pay 10% more than the prices above, 200 grams or more 12% more than the prices above.

      A few last things. If you have any gold or silver coins or bars (bullion) you should get about 1%-2% below market value if they are pure gold (most are) since they do not need to be melted.

      Also now is NOT the time to sell anything but gold, silver or platinum. If you have diamonds (larger than a 1/2ct), or a high end watch, KEEP THEM IT!! Wait until the economy rebounds a little. You would get half of what you would of got 6 months ago for them!!

      Obviously every gold buyer in the world is gonna jump all over this question and tell you to sell to them, LOL. I would get feedback from those who sold jewelry in your local area. Selling locally in person is always best. I heard some crazy stories from people about those mail-in companies.

      My friends and I sold to a gold party company called goldpartying.com. They came to my house and bought my things along with my guests' jewelry and I got paid a lot of $. Not only did I make $ off my own stuff, but I made a % of the total amount they bought from the whole party. So in the end, I got about 00 (not including my food reimbursement). Some of my guests had already gotten quotes from a few local stores and buyers and this company ended up paying out way more, so we were all very happy with them.       You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

      1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

      2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

      On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

    I have a broken gold necklace and want to sell it. However, I have seen in many news stories that those gold buyers in the mall, and on TV, are scammers and only give you a fraction of the gold's actual worth. Who should I look to sell to? Jewelry store?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, do not go to one of the places that pay you a portion of what ever gold is selling for via the stock market. The "Cash for Gold" places will scam you for as little as 30% of what the true price of gold is that day.

      Every city has one place in town that pays what ever the stock market (or very very close to what the stock market is that day) is at that day. So if you have an ounce of gold, and gold is at 1,100, they will give you 1,100. They then sell sell it to a guy who melts it down and makes it into rings, and triples the price and resales it at places like Kay Jewelers (huge scam btw).

      So what you need to do is call around to each place in town that buys gold and ask them how much they pay. Usually the best one is just called "Gold and Silver" and is not a pawn shop. A pawn shop will give you about 40-60% on gold. Make some calls. And do not look on Craigslist for a private buyer, they pay about 80% of the true price--all they do is run to the gold shop and make 20% off what you just sold.

      Carat is a measurement used for weighing precious stones, particularly diamonds, NOT for gold. The K (for Karat) identification is an indication of the relative "gold" content in the alloy - 24K being pure gold and numbers less than that indicating that the "24" total may have other metals content (e.g., 14 Karat has 10 parts non-gold). Unless it is one particularly large stone, the precious stones are not likely to be worth anything, much. After that, the gold is sold by weight in ounces or grams. I don't know what the going price to buy gold is, and only a real jeweler is likely to be able to tell you how much the bracelet might be worth, if there truly is no quality mark on the piece. The jeweler could also tell you if it is truly a "gold" bracelet or merely gold-plated or gold-filled, in which cases the piece will probably be worth nothing.

      haha don't bother with cash converters or the shop kiosks, unless you like getting ripped off.
      I shopped around for hours online trying to find the highest bidder for my gold. Half these dodgy companies wouldn't even tell me what price i'd receive for my gold.
