     Unless you sell to a private buyer you will not get as much as you would probably like... Diamonds can add to the cost, depending on their size and quality... A few years ago it was .00 per point on a diamond... Gold in almost any jewelry store will be bought for maybe 60% of the actual gold weight.... not the total weight of ring. Someone's idea of ebay is good, but if this is a high ticket item you should have it appraised by a jewelery appraiser. People are cautious when they can't actually see the piece...      It will only have value as metal because the class ring could have no use other than to a member of the class or an imposter.

     The pawn shop will give you a price for what they will pay you for it. Often, they will give you a little more for it if you say you want a loan on it and they think you'll be returning to buy it back. Have you checked into any scrap gold dealers or though about craigslist or ebay? It is possible to have the ring altered for another person(new stone, high school and such).

      There are many factors influencing the price of a diamond. Carat weight, color, clarity and the most important, cut.

      The secondhand market for diamonds is not strong. Even less for stones under 1.00ct ,(carat). Try and find out if the seller knows the color and clarity of the stone. Then go from there into a retail store to find out how much the stone and a setting sells for new. You can then pretty much gauge what you are willing to pay for it secondhand.

      Although you won't be able to tell if its well cut.

      Take it to a jewelry store to be weighed. Most places should be able to give you an idea of it's value. I've heard that the places to send gold advertised on TV are scams. Try sending it direct to a gold refining company.

      the age of the ring is of no concern. The 14k and the weight is. Second, what are you expecting to get? If you paid 100.00 for it.....you may only get about 25-30 for it. Sad to say, but you will be around or under wholesale dollar amounts. No one will pay more for something they can get cheaper especially in the jewelry industry. If you need money, a good jeweler may be helpful or a good pawn shop. Or maybe a place like your local paper or craigslist. And list for about half of what you paid or what similar items are selling for in a good jewelry store. If you don't like the ring, redesign it, add different stones.

      Call around to jewellery stores but be careful. Earlier this week on the news they did a story about how these gold buying companies are only paying on average 40-50% of the value of the gold. But it varies from company to company. So shop around and don't take the first offer. And watch this - while it is a US clip it applies to the UK as well

      Route 2: To get the most money for your gold and diamond item, have the ring appraised (at least the diamond) and make certain the appraiser can give you the Rapaport value of the diamond.

      When you attempt to sell a diamond in good condition, the dealer is likely to make an initial offer of 60% of the diamond’s “Rap value,” according to the Rapaport Diamond Report. The report is updated each week and covers diamonds of varying color, shapes, grades, and sizes up to six carats.

      Often the dealer’s offer is far less than the diamond’s appraised value. This is because the appraiser is aiming to tell you the diamond’s retail value. If your diamond’s retail value is ,000, the Rapaport value may be ,000. It may be ,000. You simply won’t know unless you see a relatively current Rapaport sheet listing the qualities of your particular diamond. And the dealers know most people aren't familiar with Rapaport value, so they'll try to give you a lot less than the Rap value. Show you are familiar with the industry, and they'll likely bump up the offer, though not to anything above Rap value.

      Hypothetically, let’s say your diamond that was appraised at ,000 has a Rapaport value of ,000. That means the wholesale price of the diamond would be ,000. The average dealer would offer you 60% of the ,000, so you should expect the dealer’s initial offer to be ,000. As you can see, it simply doesn’t matter to the dealer that your ring has been appraised at ,000. To the dealer, there is no reason to expect the diamond to sell for more than the Rapaport value.

      However, there are plenty of reasons a diamond could sell for less than the Rapaport price. A diamond could be chipped, have scratches, or otherwise show damage. These things happen. And dealers know it. So, if a dealer offers much less than 60% of the Rapaport value on a ring you thought was in good condition, ask why and listen with a skeptic’s ears.

      The dealer looks at the gold at its market value--unless it's a unique setting that could resell easily. Market value for gold changes every few minutes. Here's a good source: http://www.monex.com/.

      All of this can be a hassle, and some people would rather go with "Route 1" as it is simpler.

      Route 1:
      Find out the specs of your diamond (from the paperwork that came with the jewelry or through an appraiser--or you can send it to a gemological laboratory, like GIA, for grading at about 0 for a 1-carat diamond). Look up the retail value of similar diamonds on a diamond search engine, like http://www.diamondpriceguru.com/. Then list your jewelry on eBay or Craig's List to see if you can get a price that makes you happy. Posting a photo of the jewelry and a copy of the appraisal helps attract willing buyers.

      Most jewelry in jewelry stores is marked up about 200%- or more. Therefore, they can take off quite a bit and still make a profit.

      Diamonds are hard when it comes to pricing. The value has to do with the color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Unless you are an expert, it would be difficult to determine if one diamond is worth more than another. A one carat diamond could be less valuable than a 1/2 carat diamond of a much higher quality.

      Then there is the price of gold. It has gone up recently so if the gold was purchased a few years ago, the jeweler paid a lot less than current price for it.

      This is really a job for an expert - or a jeweler that you really trust.
