I have a thick necklace and earring set (looks to be 18 to 24k), a thinner necklace of white gold, two rings (one with a very large blue gem, over 2 carats), and a two toned necklace (white/yellow mix). 14. QUESTION:
getting the right value for my gold necklace and coin in Toronto?
I own a thick gold neclase it is 14k. Attached to the chain, is a 500 Lira gold coin commemerating the 25th anniversarry of the state of Israel. The total weight is 69 grams.
How much is this worth? Where can I go to find it's value, and where is the best place to sell it in Toronto Ontario? Would this be a collectors item?
    Thanks Silverpet,
I would at least like to know how to get a fair price for the gold content in both the neclase and the coin. The total weight is 69 grams like i said above, the neclase is 14k, but the coin itself is a higher percent gold than that- not sure what. I really would like to sell this- where can i go to get an honest estimation as to how much i could sell this for?

    • ANSWER:
More to sentimental than collector value, I'm afraid. I'm not an antique collector or evaluator, but I'm a coin collector and I can assure you that once a coin has been mounted to a pendant or in jewellery, it will lose its numismatic value. Numismatists and hobbyists consider jewellery coins as damaged coins, unless in cases of extreme coin rarity then it could still fetch high premiums which the Israeli gold 500 lirot is not. But all is not lost... if you decide to remove the coin for sale, then you will still get the gold content value. Sorry to disappoint you, but most damaged coins are only worth bullion if struck in precious metals. Also, many Israeli gold and silver coins have been melted in the late 1970s when the price of gold and silver passed 0 and per ounce respectively... the demand for the coins just wasn't there. You could bring your pendant coin to a Toronto coin dealer, and I'm sure he/she will say the same thing.

      Update:
Just read ur additonal comments. Well, the 500 lirot 1975 coin commemorating the 25 Years State of Israel Bonds weighs 20 grams, has a gold fineness of 0.900, and contains 0.5787 ounce of pure gold(in uncirculated condition). So here's what I could figure:
The gold coin, 0.5787oz gold = Approximately US5.
      The necklace, 14k gold(assuming it's 14k alloy, not plated), 49 grams = Approximately US4.
Total is about 9, but of course, coin dealers or goldsmiths pay less. Good luck.

Where can i sell my old gold/diamonds??
does anyone know where i can sell my old gold/diamonds for cash? preferably in brampton, ontario? if not, then missisauga or toronto as my last resort??

    • ANSWER:
The Pawn shop! In all states they have one, if there isn't one in your state, that'd be weird. You can give them your gold/diamonds and they give you you're money and put it in their shop so other people can buy it! Also, you can give them anything else and they'll exchange it for money. For example, my local Pawn shop has everything from lawn mowers to TV sets to game systems! It's cool, but for most Pawn Shops, you have to be at least 18 to exchange your item for cash:P

where to buy beautiful gold navel rings?
Does anyone know of anyplace in brampton or toronto that sells real belly rings. Im looking for a gold dangle one with some kind of blue stone, turqouis? Jade? Or just one that looks pretty and reminds you of the carribean, colour wise that is.

    • ANSWER:
you could check out a few websites, you could try bodyartforms.com or maybe go to a peoples or local jewelery store, or see if your piercer has any you could buy or she could order.

  33. QUESTION:
    Where to buy gold bullion?
I live in a fair sized city in Ontario, Canada... about 70,000 people. Would there be a store in my city that sells gold? I don't want to buy it online. What kind of store am I looking for? Coin dealerships or pawn shops maybe? You can't get it at the bank can you? Or do they only sell it directly in larger cities like Toronto?

I don't want collector's coins, I just want pure gold as close to market value as possible. (I know there is going to be a vendor markup.)

I already own a gold ETF but I would like to own a little bit of physical gold.

Also anything I should look for to avoid being ripped off?
Would buying an equal $ amount of silver be as good a choice as buying gold? It's certainly cheaper so I could buy a lot more of it.

    • ANSWER:
if you can get to Toronto, you should be able to find a pure precious metals dealer there, i don't see why not. better at such a dealer than at a coin or pawn shop, i would think. i can't get metals at any bank here in the US, so i would think it would also be the same in Canada.

i live in NYC, so i go to a major dealer here called MTB. i buy Krugerrands for spot plus a variable premium and commission. i can't avoid paying over spot, but i think i'd pay the same or more if i mail ordered, and at least i get the satisfaction of taking it home with me.

your idea of buying silver is a good one, considering that the current gold/silver ratio is 56, which is much higher than the historical ratio of between 15 and 20, which means that silver may be considerably undervalued with more upside potential going forward. right now i'm buying more American Silver Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs than i would normally (i also have 100- and 10-ounce bars which come at much lower premiums), with the idea of riding the ratio down from 56 to a point where it would be profitable to trade my silver for gold.

for the ASEs and CMLs i pay spot plus a to premium and commission. the bars only cost me 25-50 cents extra per ounce. i actually prefer the CMLs because they have a C face value vs. US for ASEs, although what practical difference this will make if/when our paper currencies turn to dust may be none at all, since silver is still silver.

i don't have any metals ETFs myself and prefer to stay away from them. i feel there is always a risk, however slight, of corporate incompetence and malfeasance by the ETF issuer. the metals they account for may not actually exist. an ETF share is also a form of debenture, and if it were to go under, you would still only be a general creditor.

(btw, i don't know where one of the posters gets the idea that your coins have to be pristine. some of the silver i've bought from MTB is tarnished, and they'll buy it back for as much as any of my "pristine" silver. they handle them all like handling bulk grains, anyway...)

  36. QUESTION:
Can anyone give me an estimate of how much my diamond would sell for?
Ok well I have a diamond ring that I am looking to sell. Engagment ring actually with matching band. i was just wondering if anyone knew an approximate price of what I could sell for or WHERE i could sell in mississauga or Toronto area.
    Here are the specifications

    Just under .5 carot.
    colour: D
    VVS1
It is placed on a 18k White gold ring with a matching 18k white gold band as well. If anyone knows a good place where i could sell or if anyone knows how much i could sell for .. let me know that would be great thanks

    • ANSWER:
Your best bet is NOT to take it to a jeweler, but to sell it through want ads or on Ebay or the like.

Even so, regardless of what was paid for it, you will be lucky to get half that. Jewelry is marked up 1000% retail, new, and is grossly overpriced.

Half-carat diamonds are not rare - and the gold is only bought by weight - there's not much there. You might be able to pawn it for a few hundred $.

Can you please answer these somewhat hockey questions?
1.In 1900, the goal net was introduced to the game of hockey. Can you imagine how fast the game would be if there was still not a net…and if players shot a puck and it went in as a goal and play continued….as the puck ricochets off the back boards? Longest poorly worded question ever?

2.In 1914, the Toronto Blueshirts of the NHA win Toronto’s 1st Stanley Cup. If I went on the streets of Toronto, in front of the HHOF, and sold Toronto Blueshirts hockey sweaters for a pop….how many do you think I would sell in an hour?

3.In 1929, Offsides was introduced. I know as kids we played games without offsides rules….but could you imagine watching a professional game without offsides. I think that might even be more interesting than the Winter Classic. If they televised a game without offsides or icing by two NHL teams, would you tune in or fall asleep?

4.In 1946, Babe Pratt became the 1st NHL player to get suspended for gambling on NHL games. Have you ever betted on a NHL game for money?

5.In 1956, the USSR enters a hockey team in the Olympics and they win the gold. Rumor has it, their conditioning at the time was the reason for their success (nutrition, diet, and exercise)….which was something that the U.S. and Canada were not incorporating into their routine. What do you think would be the best exercise for a hockey player that does not involve ice or equipment?

BQ: I received an online offer to get a free St. Louis blues baseball hat in the mail. I was totally stoked until I proceeded to “check out”, and they wanted for shipping. I do not hate the Blues nor do I love them. I would love their hat for free, but is pushing it. Would you pay for a St. Louis Blues hat?

    • ANSWER:
      1. I'm having trouble envisioning how goal determinations would be made without nets... Maybe nature of the game would change so dramatically that score values as we know them would be out the window. You'd have scores like San Jose: green; St. Louis: Alan Thicke. (San Jose obviously wins in this instance).

      2. I'm willing to bet that you'd be likely to encounter at least a couple of people every day who would know about the Blueshirts. I'm going to go with .15-.25 sweaters per hour.

      3. Fall asleep. I like scoring, don't get me wrong (take that how you will), but it's not as big of a deal when you're in the middle of the proverbial cherry orchard.

      4. Hell no. Gambling is for idiots and people who have WAY more money than they could possibly use. I don't get the thrill of putting up my hard-earned money for a contest over which I have zero control. If we're talking about a "friendly wager" situation between friends, I'd much prefer to use barter-able commodities (particularly beer).

      5. Squats and power cleans to build explosive power; running/ cardio for endurance.

BQ--If I were a Blues fan, I'd go for it, since the shipping charge is less than the face value of the new hat (I'm assuming). But I'm not a Blues fan, so no.

thanks for the info. but I knew all that already. I should have added this first but I woul like to know if I might have a good chance at exeptance if I did achieve all this (I strongly believe I can)

    • ANSWER:
Don't count your chickens before they hatch! You haven't taken the AP tests yet, don't be so sure of your scores yet..and ACT, SAT, either

I got accepted into a university ranked higher than the University of Toronto on the world list, and I have a 29 ACT, 3.80-3.85 gpa (95-95 average) currently in 12th grade, and I've taken AP Macroeconomics and got a 3 on it, expecting to get a 4 on AP Calculus AB this year (only two weeks :S)
but I am not sure if I think I could have a chance at U of Toronto, since the university I got accepted to is in my state, they give preference to in-state students. Maybe I would have gotten in, who knows.
If you live in Ontario, then definitely, go for it and apply, and you probably would get accepted if you keep it up and do get those scores. However, I assume you're a US student, since you're taking about the ACT and SAT, so it's a bit iffy...first they consider province students, then other Canadian students, and then International. You'd be competing against all the other internationals, such as from Asia, Europe, Central Asia, etc. Don't be discouraged though! Just wait until you get your ACT and SAT scores back, doing your best in your classes and raising your gpa, and then you can decide where it would be reasonable to apply and use money on the application fee. I believe you could get into the University of Toronto if you tried and got good scores.

If you want to go to England, I suggest finding a uni somewhere nearby you that has a good study abroad program for your major so you can go study abroad for a year and not have outageous international student costs to pay (unless you're rich of course)..being a double international student would be insanely expensive and you would graduate with so much debt paying off for years and years, so pick one place that you want to go to and set your goals on that, and ways you can get there (that doesn't neccessarily mean being an international student, just because it is in a different country)..Canada is much like the US anyway, not much difference in people or cities at all even, and Northern climate (like Minnesota and Winsconsin)
Since you seem like you want to go to a different country, definitely look for study abroad programs in colleges that are close by and you could be surprised by what you find and how competitive it is
The best ranked universities are in the US..for most people, it is that they want to come here

      Hope this helped!!

  43. QUESTION:
Is the university of British Columbia or the university of Toronto Better for becoming an archaeologist?
and specializing in mediaeval Europe? Also could I get exepted to either? I would love to go to England for college (Spaecifically Durham University, UBC actually has a study abroad program with them) but I don't want to count on it. Archaeology, not Architecture. Archaeology is the study of ancient civilizations.

    • ANSWER:
Okay.... admissions to Canadian universities are a bit different. At UBC, they will take your English 12 mark, and three other marks that normally include harder courses like Math, all the sciences, geography, history etc in your final year. They do not look at "GPA" but rather, your final average score. So if you do have a 90% average, they will consider that has a 4.0 GPA I suppose. (Technically 90% would be a 4.33 GPA)

Secondly, UBC architecture is through the ENDS program which is environmental design that leads into UBC Masters of Architecture (MARCH).
      http://www.sala.ubc.ca/programs/environmental-design

In order to get into the ENDS program, you need to finish two years of general studies in order to apply for the program. In order to get into UBC, you need approximately 90% or so, which you have. I believe you will get in as long as you maintain that average. However, the admissions for international students is always different so .... good luck! I'm quite sure you have the grades to get in and your supplemental application looks good as well. :)

BTW. I don't know much about the University of Toronto but I believe they have an actual Bachelors of Arts in Architecture studies [http://www.arts.utoronto.ca/architecture.htm] I'm not sure if its better than UBC ENDS though!

  45. QUESTION:
Is buying Canadian stocks in the US via Pink Sheets a good idea?
I've noticed that some Canadian Companies have listings in the US on the pink sheets. I'm wondering what I should consider before I invest this way. It seems the price difference between the shares on the TSX (looked up on Canadian Yahoo, www.yahoo.ca) and the price of the shares on
the pink sheets (looked up on www.yahoo.com) is roughly the exchange rate between USD/CAD (I take the price of the Canadian Shares in C$ and multiply it by the exchange rate found on Yahoo which is the symbol CADUSD=X to get pretty close to the price of the shares on the pink sheets in US $.

For example if I'm interested in Laurentian Bank (symbol LB.TO on the finance page of yahoo.ca and traded in Toronto) and look at Laurentian Bank (symbol LRCDF.PK on the finance page of yahoo.com and traded on the pink sheets) am I essentially looking at the SAME shares? I've been watching several companies and it seems the Toronto price and the Pink Sheets price seem to move together and close to the exchange rate as the price difference. (Canadian share price,in C$ x (CADUSD=X) = Pink Sheet share price in US$).

Do you think liquidity could be an issue? It seems there is no news nor volume when I look on American Yahoo. Is it just not reported? Or are any shares bought this way included in the Toronto Volume?

Any thoughts on this? I'm looking at buying Claymore Gold Bullion ETF (CGL.TO and CGBLF.PK) to perhaps get a double whammy out of any price appreciation in gold. That is, if gold goes up, then the C$ goes up too. And then when I sell, it converts back as more US$ than had I bought and sold an American Gold ETF (such as GLD) .

Or am I totally wrong about these pink sheet shares? What problems do you see with my theory? Is lack of volume on the pink sheets a problem?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If you buy shares of just about any foreign company trading in the US, you are likely buying ADR's (American Depository Receipts). The basic idea is that some American bank buys a bunch of shares in the foreign company and then you buy rights to those shares. As you point out ADR's are priced in dollars, but the value is really the value of the underlying shares converted to USD.

A company would choose to trade on the pink sheets because they are either unsponsored (i.e., the company has nothing to do with it) or Tier I (the company won't file any docs with the SEC and won't do GAAP accounting but does have a relationship with the bank).

Liquidity in the pink sheets may be a big concern and they are almost certainly less liquid on pink sheets than their native exchange.

I think your play in Claymore is bush league. If you want leverage in gold, why deal with FX risk? Just buy CGL on margin or (better) buy gold futures or options on gold futures.

  46. QUESTION:
What do you think about this 0k investment plan?
So I'm in Toronto. I was struggling for some time now. This is pretty much love money from my parents, I feel very depressed when I realize that I'm spending more than I'm making.

Right now 0k is in form of physical gold and k in cash. My family has 0 tolerance for risk. I have a sales job and a base pay of only k, everything else is commission. My paycheck after taxes is 50 per month.

I want to have a savings cushion is case someone gets sick or looses a job. So I want to buy a 0k apartment and have a 00k per month mortgage, using gold as a collateral potentially. Spend k fixing it up. Make a nice shower room, quite windows, more sound insulation. The most important thing is that the building is solid and has no wood support beams. Than k will get invested into stocks that I can keep for like a decade.

Even if this apartment blows up or my future wife takes it, there will be little invested into it because it will be a 25 year mortgage; and I would have been paying 00 rent anyway.

So in the end I will be invested into property, gold, stocks. Even if Apocalypse happens I can easily sell one of the assets to back up another. Or take my gold and hide in Mexico. My goal is to wait through the recession and have a 7 digit bank account by 30. Now I'm 25.
Now my rent alone is 0. I'm looking into moving up to 00. Either I pay rent or mortgage. I have a business degree and good experience I'll always be able to find another job. And I like having a modest lifestyle.

    • ANSWER:
If I understand, you now have 0K in gold, K in cash. You want to keep the gold? Spend K in the apartment, which will be financed by a mortgage.

So, you will then have your 0K in gold and K left to invest in stocks. Assuming your job income pays your expenses, you want your 0K in gold and K in stocks to grow to ,000,000 in 5 years? You will need a 400% return on your gold and stocks. This is highly unlikely.

      Sorry.

  47. QUESTION:
