     It all depends on what you have. If your jewelry is in nice shape and at least 14kt or 18kt gold, many estate jewelry buyers will express interest and pay a bit better.

     If the jewelry is damaged, or common pieces you still see in chain stores, you might as well sell it for gold weight...and in that case watch the gold markets for a nice gold spike because gold is paid on closing price.

     Also, look into some private jewelry stores. Sometimes they do consignment for a percentage and you could maximize your dollar out of that.

     You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

     1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

     2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

     On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

      First... the "spot" price for gold you may see on the news, etc, is for gold bullion. Gold jewelry would need to be melted down and recast into bullion, so it does not have the same value as a bar or coin. That being said, you have 24k gold, which is the purest form. It is much better than 14k, which is a little over 58% pure or 10k, which is a little over 35% pure.
      I would suggest making sure of the following before selling:
      1) Make sure the buyer posts the prices they pay on their website.
      2) Make sure they provide free TRACKABLE shipping and sufficient insurance.
      3) Make sure they contact you with their offer BEFORE sending a check and make sure if you aren't happy they will return it promptly, with trackable shipping and sufficient insurance.
      4) Make sure they are Better Business Bureau Accredited and do not have any complaints filed against them.
      I researched companies thoroughly and found that Cash4Gold, mentioned by another reader does not meet ANY of these requirements. Many buyers meet some, but not all. You would get less by outright selling your jewelry, but the offset is that you would get paid more quickly. Be sure to shop around as you may find some jewelers willing/able to pay more for your pieces. If you have appraisals for the jewelry, be sure to bring those as well, as jewelry with an established appraisal usually will bring more money.

      Whatever you do, DO NOT use those companies on TV that have you send them your jewelry and send you a check in return. You will actually get a whole lot less from them than you would a pawn shop!

      It is possible that some of your jewelry would be worth more because of gems, etc, and some worth less because it is plated, etc.

      You can visit three different jewelers and get their bids on the items. Then you will have a pretty good idea of their value.

      That 0 per ounce is troy ounces which is 31 grams not 28 grams, that is the way precious metal is wieghed so you probably have closer to 10 ozt

      Your gold is 14 k, spot price is for 24 k so you are talking a price of 5/ozt not 0

      The places which buy your scrap gold only give a percentage of the spot price because they in turn, sell it to recyclers who don't give them the spot price since they have refining costs and also need to turn a profit so you are only going to get at best, about a third to half of what your gold is worth.

      If you want to sell, your best bet would be to sell the items as scrap gold on a site like ebay. There are many bidders who buy scrap gold. Personally, I cannot bear the thought of sellng my gold, I am a gold prospector for the hobby, not the money.

      1. At a pawn shop - Yuck!
      2. At a jewelry store - Better
      3. Online to a Cash for Gold Buyer

      I have researched and found more than 200+ online gold buyers and there are three top, honest companies that I send all of my family and friends to.       Gold (Based on todays price of 3/oz)- 10k- gram, 14k- gram, 18k- gram.

      Silver- 925/Sterling- a ounce.

      This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

      The diamonds are nearly imposible to know because so many factors go into the selling price. I personally WOULD NOT sell any diamonds, gems etc. right now because of the economy. Diamond prices are down 60% from 6 months ago. Now is the time to sell any gold or silver but not diamonds, gems, or costume jewelry.

      Well. spot gold price is 5.70 / troy ounce. Divide by 31.1 grams / troy ounce, then multiply by 14/24, because of the 14K. So the gold in your jewelry is worth .30 / gram. Probably a bullion buyer will not offer you more than the spot value, and may offer you substantially less.

      If it's scrap gold, personally I think it's better to go directly to a refiner (aka, online gold buying places) You want to make sure you pick one that is an actual refiner though, because there are many imitators.       You probably should take it to a jeweler. A pawn shop would offer an extremely small percentage of what it is worth. A reputable jeweler, I believe, would be more likely to give you a decent offer.

    how do you determin the value of the jewelry, most of the gold says 14k but the jeweler said anyone can put that there and doesn't mean that it is 14 k.
