Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is it better to sell scrap gold to a jewelry store?
I have a large amount of gold that I got after my Granmother died and would like to cash some in. Is it better to go to a jewelry store or one of those online gold places? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If it's scrap gold, personally I think it's better to go directly to a refiner (aka, online gold buying places) You want to make sure you pick one that is an actual refiner though, because there are many imitators. If you sell to a jewelry store or pawn shop, you gold will likely end up at a refiner anyway, so cut out the middle man. If you wanted to compare how much you get you can use this calculator

  4. QUESTION:
How to sell scrap gold in Highlands Ranch Colorado?
I live in Highlands Ranch Colorado, 20 miles south of Denver and Littleton. I have a few old gold rings and some broken 14kt gold necklaces that I would like to sell. I have tried craig's list but only seem to get weird people calling me from pawn shops that want me to take my gold down to Denver to sell it for half of melt value. I was thinking about sending the scrap gold to that CASH 4 GOLD business that I saw on late night TV but when I read the on line reviews NO one had any thing nice to say about their business. Other refiners seem to have a ounce or two minimum for shipping and still charge 10% and send you a check in about two weeks. There is a Hotel Gold Buyer in town this week end and they have bad on-line review as well. Is there a local jewelry shop that would pay cash on the spot and not charge me 50% commission. What is a fair commission when I sell my gold? Please respond with usual percent of commissions or refining charge. Or if you know of a trusted gold refiner if I have to mail my GOLD, Thanks for your responses.

    • ANSWER:
I have checked into the Cash4Gold and it look like a big scam! The local pawn shop is only a good place to sell your gold if you need cash today and you don't mind getting 50% of value. I have sold a few things on Craig's list but people want you to give way your gold and jewelry because they think you are desperate for cash. found https://sites.google.com/site/goldsilverplatinumcoppermetals/ website looking for some one to by my gold coin because I don't want to pawn it or go to some crap hotel and get offered half of what it is worth. Check out that link and see if that guy is willing to give you a fair deal. Sound like he is Highlands Ranch Colorado just south of Littleton and Centennial I think it is very honest he explains his commission.

  5. QUESTION:

I did with few pawn sites earlier and i was never satisfied. I am expecting some good place to get good money.

    • ANSWER:
Take a look on Ebay and see what similar auctions for scrap gold are selling for. Probably get more there than a Pawn Shop.

  6. QUESTION:
how much would i get if i sell my scrap gold?
i know prices always fluctuate but i live in new york and i have a bunch of gold hoop earrings, some old necklaces.. and i have a name plate ring and nameplate necklace that were both very expensive. How much do you think i would get for it?

    • ANSWER:
It will depend on the weight (heaviness) and carat weight of each of the items (10k, 14k, 18k) that will determine the overall price.

I work in NY and I actually just scrapped some old earrings and a broken bracelet and an old class ring...made several hundred dollars off of everything and it was mostly 14k gold.

      Good luck!

  9. QUESTION:
Best place to sell unwanted gold jewelry?
I need to sell a lot of unwanted scrap gold jewelry (earrings, watches and necklaces). What is the safest and highest paying gold refiner?
I'm looking to sell gold in my city if possible.

    • ANSWER:
You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

      1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

      2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

I buy from people all over America. I can buy it from you if you know the exact weight of your gold and silver. I can pay you via paypal even before you ship it out.

DO NOT USE CASH4GOLD.COM, GOLDKIT.COM, GOLDPAQ.COM OR ANY OF THOSE COMMERCIAL TYPE SITES!!!!!!! THEY ARE A HUGGGGE SCAM!!!!

Call me if you want to sell your items to my company. The number is 877-487-1386.

  10. QUESTION:
should i sell my scrap gold jewellery
I live in Rugby, and went round a few shops, and the expensive type shops didnt want to buy it ! They said they "would" give a high price...only they "werent buying at the moment" ....Hmmm! I tried a couple of check cashing places, and a place called the emporium, who offered quite a bit over what the others had offered? (do they know something) ie, is now the best time to sell?
Its gold, but i dont wear it, some of it broken, scrap jewellery so I know its not worth a lot, but I was suprised at the price offered!
should i sell scrap gold in rugby, or go to the jewellery quater...is it worth the petrol though!

    • ANSWER:
My friend wanted to do the same thing.
She did a lot of research, and she found a great place online. I will provide the link for you below if you are interested.

They were willing to give her the best price for her gold, and they were willing to pay her fast.
There is a ton of information on that site if you would like to check it out. You can put in your information if you would like to find out what you can get for your gold.
Good luck, I hope you get they money you want for it!

  11. QUESTION:
How should I sell my gold.?
My mom cleaned out her closet and found my dads safe. (they got divorced) My mom remmeber the code and opened it. Inside was about 12 ounces of 24k gold. I know gold is getting cheaper and cheaper now. I used to be 1000 an ounce now its climbing down to 900. Should I sell asap or just risk it and sell it all later. And where would you guys sell scrap gold.

    • ANSWER:
Entirely up to you when you want to sell it. You should sell it now if you need the money: You can use this calculator to figure out how much you can get http://www.goldintomoney.com/calculator

Gold prices are all speculation, so if your plan is to hold on and it and reinvest, read up on precious metal trading sites and try to see if people are predicting gold going up or down.

  12. QUESTION:
How much money should I expect if I sell my gold for scrap to a jewler? ?
It is 14k and weighs approx. 1 1/2 ounces on the postal scale at work.

    • ANSWER:
Spot gold price is currently 5 / troy ounce. The postal scale measures in avoirdupois ounces, 28 grams to the ounce. So you have 42 grams of 14K gold which is 14/24, or 58.33% pure gold and 41.66% something else. So multiply 42 x (5 / 31.1) * (14 / 24)

I have a spreadsheet that does it, it puts 14K gold at .66 / gram, and spot price on your gold is 7.72.

Now, spot price is a funny number. If you are buying, people may charge you a lot more than spot, or a little more than spot, but never less. When you are selling, people will offer you much less than spot, or a little less than spot, but never more.

You can check the spot price anytime here:

  13. QUESTION:
Should I sell my gold jewelry and scrap gold now? I have over 11 oz of 14k.?
At over 0 for gold this morning, I have read predictions that the more we go into a recession, the higher the price of precious metals. Now I'm wondering, should I sell the small amount that I have or hold on? These are pieces I can let go of with no attachment but I'm wondering if it would be more prudent to hold on...any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
That 0 per ounce is troy ounces which is 31 grams not 28 grams, that is the way precious metal is wieghed so you probably have closer to 10 ozt

Your gold is 14 k, spot price is for 24 k so you are talking a price of 5/ozt not 0

The places which buy your scrap gold only give a percentage of the spot price because they in turn, sell it to recyclers who don't give them the spot price since they have refining costs and also need to turn a profit so you are only going to get at best, about a third to half of what your gold is worth.

If you want to sell, your best bet would be to sell the items as scrap gold on a site like ebay. There are many bidders who buy scrap gold. Personally, I cannot bear the thought of sellng my gold, I am a gold prospector for the hobby, not the money.

  15. QUESTION:
How to instill confidence in bidders when selling scrap gold on Ebay?
I have a substantial amount of scrap gold and want to get as close to market value for it as possible. I have decided I want to sell it in an auction setting.

There are many small, and broken scraps in my collection. I split the larger scraps, stamped with the carat, by carat. I plan on selling the gold in large lots, by weight, separated this way.

I am curious if there is anything I can do to instill confidence in bidders that my auction is legitimate. I am also interested in protecting myself from a false claims about the weight, quality or value of the gold after the auction. Is the any outside source or otherwise that I can employ to prove to a buyer that my auction is legitimate?

    • ANSWER:
Why not get a valuation from a gold merchant and then use this as proof.

  16. QUESTION:
I`m, about to sell my scrap gold to scrapgolduk.co.uk, is this wise?
e.g. If they say something is not gold, will they send that bit back with my cheque? Are they reputable? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I have never heard of them before, so i would just visit you local pawnbrokers to see how much they would give you for it, its also easier to get back if it is not gold, and it won't get lost in the post, which could be a costly mistake to happen.

  17. QUESTION:
Trying to get out of debt, when is the best time to sell our scrap gold and silver?
My husband and I are trying to get out of debt, paying off credit cards, student loans, etc. We have made quite a dent in the past two years considering we have a six year old, four year old, and one year old. We have a decent amount of scrap gold and silver we would like to sell to pay off debt or invest in my husbands business (he needs cash for a buying trip as we sell items online). We have a friend that does this and will give us a fair price for it. Do we hold onto it and hope that the prices continue to climb, or go ahead and sell it and pay towards our debt or invest in the business now? When do you think it will reach it's peak price?

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately, it is not clear when gold and silver will "peak", but it looks like some point in the indefinite future. It could be next month, it could be years down the road. Gold and silver have appreciated nicely over the past 5 years, but I don't think anyone can tell you when the best time to sell would be.

If I melt down my gold scraps to gold bars who can I sell the bars to? Is there some sort of Gold Bank?
I don't want to sell my gold to those gold for cash places/websites because I will only get a fraction of the gold's market value. If I melt down my own gold scrap to gold bars where can I sell the gold bars for Gold's true market value?

Where or whom do modern day gold prospectors sell their gold to?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Anybody who wants to buy your gold bars will have to assay them, heaven only knows what is mixed in with the gold. "White" gold is only 75% gold, for example, the rest is silver and copper. Best would be to find a cash place that will work with you and not charge you assay fees with every batch.

  24. QUESTION:
How muchh money will i get if i sell my gold?
Okay, i have a 14k gold necklace, 14k gold bracelet, and a white gold necklace. At the mall, there's a place that buys scrap gold. How much money do you think i will get if i sell those three pieces of jewelry?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you can go there and get a quote. Secondly, Craigslist is a wonderful media for selling things in your area. Remember, whatever price they quote you has to leave room for profit. You might want to sell it on your own before you accept their gold quote. Don't let them push you in to it. Tell them you need to think about and talk to your mom/friend/uncle or whoever to give you an excuse as to why you can't answer them right away. Then try to sell them on your own.

  25. QUESTION:
Best place In Seattle Washington To sell my gold?
Hi, I want to know, whats a good high paying place to sell my gold or scrap? and how much is it per gram? thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
It may be hard to believe at first, but local buyers such as jewelers or pawn shops can often be the WORST place to sell. Of course, they are not as bad as the "hotel events" or "gold parties", but they usually do not pay the best. I would recommend checking with the Silver and Gold Exchange. Why? Because they publish the prices the pay on their website at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com and the are also Better Business Bureau Accredited with a spotless record. They will even rent you a scale for free if you want to weigh your gold before sending it in, and they pay for trackable Priority Mail shipping and up to 00 insurance. Best of all, they will contact you with an offer as soon as they receive your items... and if you aren't happy, they will send your stuff right back to you for free... much different than the way the other online buyers operate.

  31. QUESTION:
Have any of you ever thought about using "my golden envelope" or any of the similar services to sell gold?
Don't, it's a complete rip-off. My sister had a bunch of scrap 24k gold and I weighed it for her. It came out to over a half ounce, so she bagged it up and sent it on its' way! She got a check for 0! I called the envelope-fairies for her and told them to send the gold back and they made a counter-offer of 0. Why didn't they pay out the 0 to start with? Hmmmmm. Eventually I just had them send the gold back to her because gold is going for over 00/ounce on the market and their best offer was more than 0/ounce lower.
Beware when you sent them your stuff.

    • ANSWER:
Yea it s sad how creeps like that work and take advantage of people. The best way is a pawn shop, jewelery store and the like and get several bids. If you can report to Fed and state Attorney Generals. Many don't know and are happy to get that. but glad she had you to look out for her. Even coin shops will buy it and all take a cut maybe 5% to resell it, but not like those crooks. Beautiful avatar, that plastic surgery really does wonders. Take care.

  34. QUESTION:
how much is one ounce of gold worth! 14k ...?
i want to sell my scrap gold....

    • ANSWER:
14K gold is 14/24 or 58.3% pure gold (24K is 100% pure gold).
You can take the price per ounce quote from Kitco.com (linked below, US0.70 as I am typing this) and multiply by 0.583 to get the value for 14K gold.
For example, 0.70 x .583 = 7.61 (current price per troy ounce for 14K gold)

  35. QUESTION:
    Scrap gold question?!?
I have some old broken 14K jewelry I am want to sell for scrap. I see there is a jeweler in my town that buys gold (he's a jeweler, not a pawn broker). Anyway, has anyone ever done this before? I was curious as to the going rate for 14K was so I don't get completely ripped off. I have a couple of bracelets that are pretty substantial.

    • ANSWER:
I wouldn't sell it to a pawn or jeweler. They will clean you out and give you little in return. Your best bet to get true spot price for gold is on ebay. 14k is uaully just above 50% of the total weight. Get a postal scale, weigh it, determine about how much you want from there and put it on ebay. The main thing is find out exactly how much gold you have in that jewelry to get an idea how much it's worth at scrap if you choose to go the jeweler or pawn route and don't let them intimidate you with salesman jargon into selling it for much lower than it's worth. Good luck

  36. QUESTION:
Should I invest in gold bars?
    Hello,
My fiancee and I are selling some scrap gold, which has sparked my interest in gold as an investment. I was wondering if it would make sense to just get our scrap gold melted into a bar, and then purchasing additional bars as investments. I am 24 now and could probably buy .5 oz a month at current value. Would this be a smart investment for the future? I like the idea of having a physical investment (not to meantion the cool factor of having a safe full of gold bars). Is now a good time to be investing in gold? What is the best way to go about this? Who sells the cheapest bars (closest to market value)? Thanks so much!

    • ANSWER:
Gold is generally a very popular investment, however it depends on your long term goals per say, if your looking for safety then gold is a good investment because when, investors or the public are fearful about the currency or a currency they generally turn to gold. Gold can be bought in forms of a bars, or in form of a equity investment e.g. ETF's (exchange Traded funds) a good one is IShares COMEX gold trust (NYSE:IAU) this is like a stock but its price fluctuates with the gold price in the market, technically you would be holding gold because the company responsible for this ETF holds 63.2 tonnes of gold in storage. Note that in order to purchase ETF's you have to buy them through a stock broker. Another way to invest in gold is through stocks gold companies such as (NYSE:GG) this is riskier because your dealing with a companies stock which involves tracking they're returns and they're movement, in price, and the risk that a normal stock would posses.
Golds Price fluctuates as do all commodities, hence forth if you want to make money on gold make sure you buy it at a low price this is generally when the economy is doing well and the USD (u.s dollar) is strong and rising.
In Conclusion confirm with your investment advisor what your long term or short term goals are and in that relation you can invest appropriately.
      Good Luck
      Happy Investing

  37. QUESTION:
Ebay problems, can he get the police?
I sold scrap gold for £400, good feedback all went well, so I bought more gold off ebay that said 14k gold real hallmarked. I sold it for over £500, I did not hear from the guy, he gave me bad feedback and said he is getting the police involved. He said we put a fake hallmark on there, as if I would know how to do that! he hasn't asked for a refund, no contact or anything just negative feedback with a threat about the police.

My mum is really scared now as she listed it. can he get the police involved? when its his fault for not contacting or sending the gold back? plus a lot of places so if u leave bad feedback we will not refund u,?
    UK........
for the first guy that answered me, I didnt no it was fake, the guy hasnt even asked for a refund, he kept the gold and threatened with the police in my feedback

    • ANSWER:
I highly doubt the police will come knocking at your door. But if they DO, you will be able to prove you purchased this gold from someone else on eBay just to sell on and you had no idea it was not real.

Get back on eBay and print off the listings (the auction YOU won for the gold, and the one you sold it) with pictures etc before it expires.

I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about.

  38. QUESTION:
    paypal dispute help please?
ok are you sitting comfortably this could be a long one,lol

i sold scrap gold on ebay for £350 it was roughly about 80-90g
so i posted it all special deivery the next day.
the following day i got an email from the guy stating the gold i sent him was underweight and 2 of the items were not gold. (which they were)
anyway.... he asked me to refund him £100 back which i refused to do as i sold him the items described. so now he has raised a paypal dispute stating the items dont meet the description.

i have already transferred the money from my paypal account to my bank account so now my pay pal account is in a negative balance.

what can i do if paypal go against me?

    • ANSWER:
I would contact paypal ASAP. I have filed issues with paypal to get money back for items I didn't recieve and it took over a month of the person not contacting paypal in order to receive the refund. Hopefully, you went through the process and didn't just ignore the complaint. Perhaps you have photos to send paypal and can argue the point of proof. In this case it cannot be verified in either way what you sent or what the person received and I would stress the latter as hard as I could. I have also heard horror stories about paypal so be careful. A friend of mine can no longer use paypal due to identity theft and his refusal to pay them for charges he didn't make. Good Luck.

  39. QUESTION:
Im thinking of selling my gold necklace, how much can I expect to get for it?
I guess I am going to take it to one of the many places that seem to be buying gold these days. It is not scrap it is in perfect condition. But I am sure they will buy it as scrap. It is 14k gold and weighs 156.1grams. I just checked todays spot price and its is 17 per troy ounce. So maybe that will save you a minute. I am just curious as a ballpark how much I can expect to get for it.

    • ANSWER:
If it's in perfect condition, there is no need to sell it as scrap. I'm sure that there will be other persons who will be interested to own that beautiful piece of jewelry. On other hand, if you want to get the most buy selling it as gold, you could try to learn how to get the most from it by reading this article I've found in the Net. I think, it could help you. http://www.slideshare.net/brentallen/gold-sellers-kit-best-places-to-sell-gold

  40. QUESTION:
Roughly how much is 10k and 14k gold worth per gram?
I don't understand the Troy ounce thing (Pennyweight) so I would like to know how much 10k, 14k, and 18k gold are worth per gram. Answers do not have to be bang on...just an estimate so I can determine how much my gold is worth if I decide to sell/scrap.

Answer in grams....please! Thank you to all who read this.

    • ANSWER:
Depends on who you are selling it to. Going rate could be anywhere from 6 to 12 a gram US if it's scrap. Obviously numismatics are different.

  41. QUESTION:
Where to sell 1Kg (9 carat) gold bars?
I'm a very puzzled guy. I have 2 x 1Kg (9 carat) gold Ingots which have been left to me from my uncles will. I've been looking around the web regarding selling both. However, It seems to be a mine-field. There are dozens of Companies offering around £10 p/gram, but this is just for scrap/broken jewelery, and appears to be the same on ebay. People on ebay are paying as much as £11.50 p/gram. Obviously, these 2 x 9 Carat Ingots have already been smelted down and are ready for sale.
I suppose my questions are:- Firstly; where do those people, who are already paying over £10/£11 a gram SELL their gold once smelted down into good clean ingots? Secondly, what price would be a FAIR price?
    Please Help if you can?

    • ANSWER:
Pure Gold (24ct) spot prices are '$ per ounce' (1 kg = 32.15 oz) and 9 carat gold is approx. 37% (just over 1/3rd) the spot price.

With spot prices at about 00 / oz, your bars worth about ,000 (£10,000) each.

This is a MASSIVE temptation and I can GUARANTEE you will be ripped off by any Internet buyer (assuming they ever receive the bars - most likley they will simply 'disappear' in the post).

At this value, it's worth going down to London's Hatton Garden and getting them valued by more than one shop ....

NOTE you WILL need all sorts of documentation to prove not only that you are the legal owner but also their 'origin' (how your Uncle came by them) since there may be tax / VAT 'owing' from when they were Imported into UK.

  44. QUESTION:
I need some ideas of what do to with SCRAP GOLD (such as earrings where one is lost, or broken chains)?
I just don't want a splash .... what else can I do with extra gold in my jewelry box. If I sell it, I'll never get much money for it. I need some good ideas.

    • ANSWER:
Lots of places will buy gold. Small jewelry shops will buy it and use it to repair other pieces for customers. Pawn shops are also an option. I sold my old (broken and single earrings, etc.) jewelry at a local pawn shop and they gave me, I think a reasonable price. Though there are places on the internet that claim to pay you "the highest price" . Someone else may know more how they work.

I'm trying to clean out my house to sell some old scrap gold/silver/coins because I need money asap. I found some that have family fun center written on them from hampton beach nh. Could they be silver and worth anything for scrap?

    • ANSWER:
Those are not coins, but tokens issued by a private business. They are definitely not silver. They are most likely brass or bronze and mostly copper, alloyed with other metals. Depending on the size and composition, scrap value can be less than one cent to maybe three or four cents each.

  48. QUESTION:
How much money do I get for 9 grams of scrap gold?
Hi, ...well I have this 9 grams of gold (broken, old and ugly pieces mostly lol) and well I saw the "cashman" kinda cheesy commercials on TV ...and read about him on the newspaper and I was wondering....how much does the cashman or any dealer pays you for gram, cause I don't thing they pay you the full price of a gram...there has to be some kind of trick, because I remember back in my home country dealers like this used to pay you like 1/4 of the price per gram or something like that ...oh well I don't expect to get rich I just want to sell all this old pieces and get enough money to get a nice one or save the money...I just thought it would be a good idea to visit this cashman guy and see how much I can get from all this scrap jewels...and well even though almost all of the pieces are marked 10K and 14K there is one that only some letters and the gold is kinda yellow ..it is a ring very old but still looks nice is there a way to find out if it is made of real gold or is it gold plated
...and has anyone ever gone to see the cashman or any other gold buyer? Is it really a good idea to go to see him? Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
If it's full-fledged gold, you could expect to get around 0 as current gold prices are around 0 per ounce, that number could be quite less if the gold is diluted among other metals.

  50. QUESTION:
    ALOT of gold?
my family knows I like gold alot and because soaring prices of gold. I recieved a gift of scrap gold I got 2 ounces of 24 carot gold. Where can I sell this I am 16 so I can't pawn it.

    • ANSWER:
Do not sell it to any of those scrap gold companies you have seen or heard advertised, you will be paid much less than it is worth. I recommend selling on an auction site like ebay where people are actively seeking scrap gold for refining. A well-written ad can actually get you more than it is worth.

BTW: a Troy ounce (which is how precious metal is traded) is 31.1 grams.
Solid 24 karat gold is not scrap, it is called bullion. Jewelry is RARELY made from 24 karat gold since it is far too malleable. Most pieces that are marked 24 k are actually gold plated jewelers brass. Some makers have maked their pieces 24 k as a means of deception.
