     If it's scrap gold, personally I think it's better to go directly to a refiner (aka, online gold buying places) You want to make sure you pick one that is an actual refiner though, because there are many imitators.       eBay is one way to go. However, almost everyone is a "middle man"

      Manufactures that use gold most often buy bars of the stuff and work it into whatever they sell. Jewelery, foil , electronics.

      So unless you can sell bars (1,000 oz!), you are selling to middle men who in turn, make the bars.....

      Spot gold prices are generally posted or offered in numerous adds. But those prices are for gold based on several things

      1) It is refined: as in not still attached to a circuit board or someones teeth and so on.

      2) It is subject to its purity. 24k is pure.. 10k is pretty common

      3) Raw Ore (as in you just mined it) may need to be smelted or melted into a single bar/slab/nugget to insure its consistency of #2

      If you have good metal, you may also want to contact a local jeweler to see if he/she is interested in buying it.

      It will depend on the weight (heaviness) and carat weight of each of the items (10k, 14k, 18k) that will determine the overall price.

      I work in NY and I actually just scrapped some old earrings and a broken bracelet and an old class ring...made several hundred dollars off of everything and it was mostly 14k gold.

    I live in Highlands Ranch Colorado, 20 miles south of Denver and Littleton. I have a few old gold rings and some broken 14kt gold necklaces that I would like to sell. I have tried craig's list but only seem to get weird people calling me from pawn shops that want me to take my gold down to Denver to sell it for half of melt value. I was thinking about sending the scrap gold to that CASH 4 GOLD business that I saw on late night TV but when I read the on line reviews NO one had any thing nice to say about their business. Other refiners seem to have a ounce or two minimum for shipping and still charge 10% and send you a check in about two weeks. There is a Hotel Gold Buyer in town this week end and they have bad on-line review as well. Is there a local jewelry shop that would pay cash on the spot and not charge me 50% commission. What is a fair commission when I sell my gold? Please respond with usual percent of commissions or refining charge.       I have checked into the Cash4Gold and it look like a big scam! The local pawn shop is only a good place to sell your gold if you need cash today and you don't mind getting 50% of value.       Not familir with that specific company but there are several comparisons of all of the cash for gold companies and the most any gave was only 15% of the total value of the gold, some were as low as 6%. Pawn shops and jewellers gave the most money, about 25-30% of the total value.

    where to sell gold bullion / dore from dental scrap gold to?
    I've melted lots of dental scrap into an ingot / gold bar and refined it using a home refining system. its 99.98% gold. where can i sell it to? I saw others on Ebay which sold for a lot less than the gold spot price (ie, spot was /gram and other home-made bars were selling for roughly /gram only) The only ones selling for a good price were the stamped ones from Metalor, Suisse, etc. Since I made it myself, what do I do with it? I tried selling some before to refiners I found online like Midwest Refineries and Garfield, but the return was NOT as advertised. They claimed I would get 94%-96% of the value but they really only gave me like 60% - scammers, to say the least. Anyways, does anyone have experience with a reputable gold buyer for non-minted gold bullions? Allso, I have a good amount of palladium which is about half the price of gold - who can buy that at a good price? Thanks

      Many coin dealers will buy bullion. You might also try jewelry stores (real jewelers, not the places in the mall).

28. QUESTION:
    How much money should I expect if I sell my gold for scrap to a jewler? ?
    It is 14k and weighs approx. 1 1/2 ounces on the postal scale at work.

    • ANSWER:
      Spot gold price is currently 5 / troy ounce. The postal scale measures in avoirdupois ounces, 28 grams to the ounce. So you have 42 grams of 14K gold which is 14/24, or 58.33% pure gold and 41.66% something else. So multiply 42 x (5 / 31.1) * (14 / 24)

      I have a spreadsheet that does it, it puts 14K gold at .66 / gram, and spot price on your gold is 7.72.

      Now, spot price is a funny number. If you are buying, people may charge you a lot more than spot, or a little more than spot, but never less. When you are selling, people will offer you much less than spot, or a little less than spot, but never more.

      That 0 per ounce is troy ounces which is 31 grams not 28 grams, that is the way precious metal is wieghed so you probably have closer to 10 ozt

      Your gold is 14 k, spot price is for 24 k so you are talking a price of 5/ozt not 0

      The places which buy your scrap gold only give a percentage of the spot price because they in turn, sell it to recyclers who don't give them the spot price since they have refining costs and also need to turn a profit so you are only going to get at best, about a third to half of what your gold is worth.

      If you want to sell, your best bet would be to sell the items as scrap gold on a site like ebay. There are many bidders who buy scrap gold. Personally, I cannot bear the thought of sellng my gold, I am a gold prospector for the hobby, not the money.

    My husband and I are trying to get out of debt, paying off credit cards, student loans, etc. We have made quite a dent in the past two years considering we have a six year old, four year old, and one year old.       Unfortunately, it is not clear when gold and silver will "peak", but it looks like some point in the indefinite future. It could be next month, it could be years down the road. Gold and silver have appreciated nicely over the past 5 years, but I don't think anyone can tell you when the best time to sell would be.

    If you want to sell your scrap gold, how can you know you're getting a fair price?

      24 Karat is 1/24 pure gold by weight. Thus, 24K is considered pure gold.

      If 24K is pure gold, then 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58% gold etc. Given an approx spot gold price of 00/oz., scrap value of One (1) gram of gold is as follows:

      10K .67 per gram.
      14K .49 per gram
      18K .64 per gram
      24K .93 per gram

      I checked a few things selling on ebay. They are going for roughly about the same prices as shown in the above table.

      So you need to weigh the item first, then do the math using the table above.

      You can not sell your gold directly to a refiner unless you are a jewelry or dealer and have proper licences. I am a refiner who buys from jewelers and dealers as well as the public. I do not pay the public as much as jewelers and dealers for these two reasons.

      1) When buying from the public the law states that I must hold all items for 15 days before selling/melting them. In those 15 days gold, or silver has the potential to drop ALOT! Additionally, my money gets tied up for 15 days when buying from the public. When I buy gold or silver from dealers or jewelers I can melt it that same day, thus there is no risk of losing profit from gold or silver dropping since it is melted the same day it is bought.

      2) Unless you have a large amount of gold or silver it isn't profitable for us to buy from you. We don't mind making .25 cents profit per gram if you have 1,000 grams of gold but it doesn't pay to make 25 cents profit per gram if you are selling 100 grams of gold. That is only profit from laying out 00. There are expenses and lots of them, most people don't realize it's a business and we need to make money too.

      On the other hand there are plenty of places ripping people off. With gold at 3 per ounce you should take no less than a gram for 10k, a gram for 14k and a gram for 18k.

      I have never heard of them before, so i would just visit you local pawnbrokers to see how much they would give you for it, its also easier to get back if it is not gold, and it won't get lost in the post, which could be a costly mistake to happen.

      Everything I have read confirms that selling your gold through the mail is nearly always a terrible idea, especially if you aren't absolutely sure what you are selling as far as exact weight and karat / fineness. If you need cash that urgently, check your local yellow pages for coin shops near you. The coin dealer will weigh your gold to the nearest tenth of a gram and determine the fineness of your gold while you watch, and then make you an offer on the spot that you can accept or decline. Since everything is done face to face, the chance of your getting ripped off is small, and you can get any questions answered immediately - Plus, you get paid right away.
      I would not trust any of the sell-by-mail places because it's just too easy for them to offer you a fraction of the value. One such company, Empire Gold Buyers, has been spamming Yahoo Answers lately - I don't know anything about that specific company, but I always have to wonder about any company that stoops to spamming.

      Anybody who wants to buy your gold bars will have to assay them, heaven only knows what is mixed in with the gold. "White" gold is only 75% gold, for example, the rest is silver and copper. Best would be to find a cash place that will work with you and not charge you assay fees with every batch.

      It does decrease the value, you have paid for the workmanship that went into producing the item, if you want scrap value then take it to a jewellers/precious metal dealer and compare the money they offer you.

      First of all, you can go there and get a quote. Secondly, Craigslist is a wonderful media for selling things in your area. Remember, whatever price they quote you has to leave room for profit. You might want to sell it on your own before you accept their gold quote. Don't let them push you in to it. Tell them you need to think about and talk to your mom/friend/uncle or whoever to give you an excuse as to why you can't answer them right away. Then try to sell them on your own.

    I have a substantial amount of scrap gold and want to get as close to market value for it as possible. I have decided I want to sell it in an auction setting.

    There are many small, and broken scraps in my collection. I split the larger scraps, stamped with the carat, by carat. I plan on selling the gold in large lots, by weight, separated this way.

    I am curious if there is anything I can do to instill confidence in bidders that my auction is legitimate. I am also interested in protecting myself from a false claims about the weight, quality or value of the gold after the auction. Is the any outside source or otherwise that I can employ to prove to a buyer that my auction is legitimate?

      That would be 0 per ounce. Assuming it's solid gold jewelry you're dealing with. Most jewelry is sold at 14 ct. or 18 ct. I'm not sure what a buyer of scrap gold is looking for...perhaps 24 ct (which is pure gold)? What I do know is that the higher the carat of the gold, the more pure gold is in it, so the higher the value. Check the links on your chains and the inside of the rings for the ct. content. That way you can know going into your sale what you should be getting for it.

      The 1st link below looks like a good website for everything gold (including the current price per ounce around the world). The 2nd link is specific to selling scrap gold, which relates to you. Do as much homework as you can beforehand. That way it's less likely anyone can take advantage of you. Good luck!

      P.S. I just perused that 2nd link and it has GREAT TIPS on selling your scrap gold. Read the whole thing. It could be the difference between making some good money for yourself or not being paid what your jewelry is worth.

      I'd say the wisest things you can do are:

      1) take photos of all the items you're selling
      2) catalog their gold content
      3) remove any gems/jewels from settings, as well as other metals (like silver), if possible
      4) weigh all the gold and document it
      5) take the items to a jeweler OTHER than the one you're going to sell it at, and get an estimate of what it all could be worth
      6) make copies for yourself of any paperwork you fill out

      Nope, but it sounds like a huge rip off to me.

      Even if legit, you only get pennies on the dollar value, your local pawn shops would pay better.

      Keep two things in mind. Those tv ads are very expensive, how do you think they pay for them? Secondly, once you stick your jewelry in the postage paid envelope and mail it off what recourse do you have if they send you a check for a penny? None, that is what you have. They will have your items and you will have nothing.

      Unless you are trying to dump stolen goods, stick to local pawn shops and jewelers.

      A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and all that.
