      Windows Home Server, as the name implies, is really only for the home environment. It's not nearly robust enough for what you need, nor can it handle multiple websites. Frankly, nothing from Microsoft is really up to this job...

      What you want is some sort of Linux-based system. There are many different flavors of Linux, but the main differences are mainly cosmetic. What I would do is start with one of the easier to use distributions like Ubuntu or Mint. While they're mainly aimed at desktop users, you can run the same server software on them as well. Once you figure out the basics of Linux, get your own domain and website hosted, then you can look into the more server-centric distributions like Red Hat or CentOS, and learn about more advanced networking and virtual hosting. At this point you'll be ready to buy a rack-based server (not a desktop) and start attracting customers.

      However what you're proposing is going to take quite a bit of work on your part, and even then you're still going to have to rent rackspace & bandwidth from a larger provider anyways, so I really don't see how this is going to even provide you with any pocket money. As a personal growth project, sure, go for it. If nothing else, you'll now have the skills and experience to get hired as a Linux system administrator.

      Yes you can sell applications made with Microsoft's Visual Studio and SQL Server Express editions (see link below)

      You can sell an program that is open source, what you can't do is enforce a closed source license on your customers.

      The open source program could be a program you've just written which you've decided to be open source, or an program that you've written that has been forced to be open source because you're using GPL software as part of it, or even an existing program that you've just downloaded and then put a price tag on (if you can find someone that is happy to pay for something that he could download himself).

      But you're not selling a license to use the application, you're selling the delivery of the application. Once the customer has a copy, its out of your hands and he can do almost anything he wants with it.

      So, as in your case where you're developing a program for a single customer, you can use open source without worrying to much about it.

      This means that when you give him the program, you'll also need to give him all the source code he needs to recompile it himself if he wanted. It also means that if he wants he can put that program and its source code on the internet, give it away etc.

      On the other hand he might not want to give it away as he just paid for it to be developed, but he has the choice.

      One of the main goals of open source is to ensure that your client is not stuck with having to come to you and pay whatever rate you choose if the program needs modification. He can make any changes he wants (or hire another developer to make the changes).

      If you do want to make your application open source, I'd recommend you avoid the GPL as its deeply confusing regarding the way it can play with closed source libraries (eg: .NET) and whether they qualify as system libraries or not.

      I'd recommend another open source license like Apache which is much clearer.

      Servers need fast disks, usually Raid. As well, larger amounts of memory (depending - if running databases). However, servers do not need good video cards, wireless (too slow) or sound cards.

      If you want a small network server, get an older computer and add some disks to it (and maybe a bit of memory), then install free server software from any Linux distribution. After loading Samba, you will be all set. If you want to just set up file storage, look at the "FreeNas" software - it turns any PC into a network file server

      It's probably far quicker and should I say SAFER to buy off a site with a regular history of selling mesos.

    Where can I buy Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition or a license key to activate my trail version?
    I dont really need the cd package if that brings the cost down or makes the purchase easier.
    I can use an OEM as its for a new server but none of our suppliers sell it or have it in stock.

    There are web servers which gives 1 GB or more space to make a site. Thats more enough to make a site. We need around 20 to 30 MB. Is there any server selling like that? If so what's the rate for hosting and domain registraion per year?

    Ive tried selling in SM and Flaris and Darkon 1 for 6m.
    For the past 2 weeks no one has bought anything.
    Im not sure if I should keep going or just lower my price?
    Where is the best place to sell them or would anyone buy them?

      I would lower your prices for both pets to around 1 - 4 mil. They are too expensive and most people don't really want those pets as well. It doesn't help that they are class D. I couldn't sell my Griffen class C for 2 mil on Lawolf. I tried to sell it for a week and a bit and no one bought it. I dropped it to 1 mil and it was sold. Most people don't want the pets you can make in game as well because it is way too hard to level them. I think that the best place to sell is in Darkon 1 on server 1 or 3. Leaving your shop open over night helps a lot.

      Cobalt and other LK ores/bars sell for a ton on my server, but lower level ore will sell too for people too lazy to farm their own stuff (or like me who have enough high levels to pay for the lower levels ;) . Basically any crafting ingredients are going to net you the most money (leather, ore, bars, herbs especially).

    i was wondering if i set up a global server network and i downloaded games, music, and movies into it and then set up a password and then sell the password to people for pretty much unlimited use of the server for free as long as you have the password. i was wondering if it was legal cuz i think this could be a big money maker if it is. plz respond thoroughly or give me a link to a website that describes the uses of servers or regulations and laws. thank you

      It's not illegal if they are your games, movies and songs. I mean the ones you did yourself! I mean you are basically trying to make something that has long been gone from the net for obvious reasons, it IS illegal. You see, peer to peer and stuff like that is border illegal because the company that makes it available to download doesn't have anything, it's just a passage for people to exchange stolen stuff. But if you have that thing on a server, it won't be long before you are made an example of, prison and thousands in fine for sure!! I guess it could work if you were in some countries but your website would be taken down or inaccessible from most countries!

      Em, as far as a link to regulations and stuff...open your games CD (or if you haven't paid for that, go into the folder) and find the disclaimer. It will tell you that you can't do anything of the sort with it! Sometimes it appears as a "accept the terms" with 50 pages to read when you install...
