   How is the best way to sell used gold?

   • ANSWER:
     There are two ways to dispose of gold and silver jewelry.

     The first way is to sell them for the precious metal content. Gold is currently flirting with ,400 per troy ounce, and and silver is fluctuating at about / per troy ounce. A 14 karat piece of gold jewelry is 58.5% gold by weight. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver by weight. If you are selling your jewelry for its metal content, you take it to a gold or bullion dealer or coin exchange shop. They will take the jewelry and pay you cash for it. Ultimately it will be melted down for the value of the metal.

     Remember that the price you get will be less than the mathematical price of the precious metal content, in order to cover the cost of assaying, the cost to the melter, etc. If you are going to sell your jewelry only for its metal weight, don't take it to a jeweler, as you will tend to get a worse price.

     The second way to sell jewelry is for its artistic value. Fine pieces of jewelry may have a value that is much greater than the cost of the precious metal alone. In this case, you would want to sell NOT to a gold and silver dealer (who will only pay you for the metal content) but to a *jeweler* who will buy the piece with the intent of reselling it as jewelry.

     The best plan of action is to take the jewelry to a jeweler or pawn shop first, and ask them to appraise it independently. Once you have the appraisal value of the jewelry, you will know how to proceed, and who to sell it to: a precious metals dealer, or a jeweler. Be sure to shop around for the best price!

     P.S. A "troy ounce" (used in weighing precious metals) is equal to 1.0971 regular (avoirdupois) ounces.

      Correct. Cash4Gold is a refiner who is open to the public. They buy any unwanted gold, silver, and platinum jewelry at extremely competitive market values. They cut out the middleman and take out the hassle of nickel and diming with a jewlery store or a pawn shop for your gold.

      Having researched much of this, Cash4Gold offers 5% more than their leading competitor for unwanted gold. The fact that they are a refiner really shows just how much more money they can give back to the consumer. I tried their service just to see and got the Cash4Gold Refiner's Gold Pack sent to my home. I sent them an old gold bracelet and got 7 dollars sent back to me. I was so surprised to see that because frankly, I didn't think it was worth that much.       I used Gold Experts recently and was very satisfied. I sent them a 5 gram gold ingot (with other gold jewelry) so I can vouch that they even live up to their claim of paying 100% for pure gold. Anyway, I haven't tried any others, but I liked the service I got with Gold Experts. And it was fast too. About a week from ordering the kit to receiving the cheque. They don't offer the best phone service, but they answer their emails pretty quickly. I recommend them.

      Use a local company if you want to sell your gold. Look in the newspaper, there are a lot of ads. Don't use the TV morons. You don't know what your gold weighs and you have no way of knowing if the weight they give you is correct. If you decline their offer, you are charged postage and insurance on the shipment - both ways.

      I don't think the AGSE deals with that kind of stuff... they deal with gold bars, gold coins, you know... real significant amounts of gold trade. If you're selling scrap gold there's no better place then to sell it to a refiner. You can request a kit from http://www.goldintomoney.com

      Ripped off... no, I'm kidding. Understand first that you are selling gold alloy - 24k gold is 0 /oz, but 10k or 14k will be less because it's not 100% gold - 10k isn't even "mostly" gold. Then consider the market for "used gold"... If you get 0 / oz, you're probably doing good.

      You should be able to get 70% of its value from a reputable jeweler. The value is easy:

      Gold per ounce = ,400. There are 31 grams per ounce (Troy), so...
      Gold per gram = .

      24 karat = 100% gold.
      14 karat = 58% gold.
      18 karat = 75% gold.

      Example: You bring in a 14karat gold necklace that weighs 11 grams. How much is it "worth" and how much should you get?

      Worth: 11 grams x gram x 58% = 7

      Get: 7 x 70% = 1

      i sent my jewelry to goldfellow and my experience was really good. It was very fast and was pleasantly surprised when i found out the amount, 5 for a bunch of old gold that I'll never wear again. my sister just sent hers.last week(she as more than i had ) and the gold is up since i sold.

      Not familir with that specific company but there are several comparisons of all of the cash for gold companies and the most any gave was only 15% of the total value of the gold, some were as low as 6%. Pawn shops and jewellers gave the most money, about 25-30% of the total value.

      You can buy alot of stuff in wow with gold like : Mounts, Weapons, Armor, food, drinks, Potions, Materials for your professions, etc... 1 gold in wow is 100 silver or 1 thousand bronze's. As a low level the monsters you kill drops about 24 bronzes.. As you level up and kill higher levels and do high lvl quests you will earn more money that you can ever think. At level 80 you can make about 19 gold from 1 daily and at level one you only make about 50 bronze.
      And here is what sucks... Buying gold from websites is ILLEGAL in wow. My friend bought 7k gold from a website then after 4 days his account got banned. WARNING THOUGH some websites may hack you account and you wont even be able to get your money back.. There goes your time that you wasted.... And i know that you can retrieve your account back from World of warcraft support website or calling them but if the guy hacked your account im preety sure he would sell all ur armor from all ur characters then send all the gold you have to his acc and delete your characters... So yea i know this answer is a little long but im just trying to let you know.

    I have some used jewelery that is all 10-14k gold how much would it be worth? It's probably about 2oz all together with a few small diamonds.

    I read somewhere that jewelers use it for restoring gold, and i know that potassium and sodium cyanide are both used for extracting gold, but can anyone verify if the double salt is actually used or sold by jewelers? Or do they use the single salts or not at all? I can't find this information anywhere and I need to know for a piece i am writing.

      Yes, it is, but they don't sell it, as it is a highly toxic and dangerous chemical. They get it from a supplier.

    I have a lot of gold jewelry, some of which is damaged but suspect that it is worth more melted down than in its current form. Where does one go to sell gold like this without being ripped off? If your advice is to use Cash4Gold, then please don't bother responding.

      You are never going to get market value for your gold. A lot of people forget that it is a business and there are expenses. About 2% of the gold immediately evaporates upon melting, market price may drop, rent, assay fees, permits, labor, taxes, etc etc. Also market prices are based on 1,000 ounces of bullion (bars, coins etc) on a trading level.

      If you have one ounce of jewelry, and gold is ,000 a ounce you don't get ,000 for that jewelry. Most jewelry is 14k gold and that is only 58.5% pure gold.

      10k- 41.7% Gold
      14k- 58.5% Gold
      18k- 75% Gold
      22k- 91.7% Gold

      I am a refiner and diamond buyer in Florida, and will give you the information you need to sell your items without getting ripped off.

      Gold (Based on todays price of 3/oz)- 10k- gram, 14k- gram, 18k- gram.

      Silver- 925/Sterling- a ounce.

      This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

      I pay around 6% more than the numbers I listed above for 100 grams of gold OR LESS, if you 100-200 grams I pay 10% more than the prices above, 200 grams or more 12% more than the prices above.

      I buy from jewelers, dealers, pawn shops, and the public all over the country. If you know the approx weight and karat of the gold I will pay you PRIOR to you shipping your items using paypal.       A few last things. If you have any gold or silver coins or bars (bullion) you should get about 1%-2% below market value if they are pure gold (most are) since they do not need to be melted.

      Also now is NOT the time to sell anything but gold, silver or platinum. If you have diamonds (larger than a 1/2ct), or a high end watch, KEEP THEM IT!! Wait until the economy rebounds a little. You would get half of what you would of got 6 months ago for them!!

      You could try a local cash converter kind of place, where they buy gold for cash. However, you're likely to get ripped off there and end up feeling bad for selling your jewellery basically for scrap.

      Some people will probably say you're mean for selling a gift but if you're not going to get any use out of it then I say that as long as you're discreet about it, there shouldn't be a problem. Maybe try Ebay, with a good advert and some lovely quality pics showing how nice and item it is? Good luck!

    I have two high quality pieces of jewelry I need to sell- one a platinum ring (recently purchased for 00) and a white gold heart pendant with stones (not sure what kind- or the amount it was purchased for)

    eBay looks flooded with auctions and "sell your old jewelry" websites/companies look scammy and I'm certainly not good at haggling with a pawn shop. Suggestions?

    I have a couple of gold rings and dental crowns that were replaced years ago. I'd like to sell them to a gold broker like goldkit.com. Is that my best bet to get appropriate cash in return? Have you used goldkit.com or some other broker for a similar situation?

      Those gold brokerages that offer to buy your scrap gold are not going to pay near as much as your items are really worth. Ebay will definitely get you more money if you know how to use it.
