Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Does any one know where i can sell white gold jewellery no longer needed?
I see these afverts but thats jut just gold isnt it, i would like to get the best price possible?

    • ANSWER:
Take it to a reputable jewellers - forget the advertised ones - they are robdogs.

  2. QUESTION:
How much can I sell a white gold necklace for?
Selling a white gold necklace perhaps on eBay or at a pawnbroker.

Purchased quite a few years ago (4-5years). The main decorative piece of the necklace and the chain each cost about 0 Australian, about 0 total.

Both pieces are white gold. There is no case, just the necklace. Don't know any more about it.

Any thoughts on what it would be worth to a second hand buyer/what kind of price I could expect on selling?

    • ANSWER:
Well I just don't have enough details on the piece to give you a clear answer. Generally if it you take it to a pawn broker you will just get weight value of it, which would be very little, whatever the price of gold is per ounce, probably around twenty dollars. They would melt it down to make other pieces.

Now, if the necklace has some interesting features to it, or a story behind it, you can sell it to an interested buyer. You can try posting to ebay, keep in mind they only allow one free picture to be posted of the item, others you will have to pay for. It's all in the salesmanship.
Does the necklace tell a story?
      Where did you get it?
      Who made it?
How rare is this particular item?
      How old is it?
You might perhaps be able to get what you paid for it with a good enough story. You might even pick up a cheap velvet jewelry case at a pawn shop or garage sale to add a finishing touch to your product.

However, in these very tough economic times, you're mostly likely going to have to take a cut to get it off your hands. Go to Ebay and search for similar items. Put them on your watch list and see what they wind up selling for. You'll know about how much your item will get then.

In the end though, the old economic saying still holds true: "something is worth what someone will give you for it." If you can convince someone that your item is unique, they will be willing to pay more for it.

I hope my advice has helped, I'm an avid ebay seller and frequently answer questions in this category.

You could go to a jeweler and get it appraised, then list it on ebay with the certificate. I think if you show some authenticity it will raise your chances of selling at the price you desire.

How much does 1/4 karat diamond. 24 karat white gold ring sell for?
My friends wants to sell me this ring but Idont know how much should I pay. What price do you think?

    • ANSWER:
There are many factors influencing the price of a diamond. Carat weight, color, clarity and the most important, cut.

The secondhand market for diamonds is not strong. Even less for stones under 1.00ct ,(carat). Try and find out if the seller knows the color and clarity of the stone. Then go from there into a retail store to find out how much the stone and a setting sells for new. You can then pretty much gauge what you are willing to pay for it secondhand.

Although you won't be able to tell if its well cut.

I'm in desperate need of money and am looking to sell my high school class ring. Its 14k white gold with an aquamarine stone. How much do you think I could get for it at a pawn shop? or a jewelry resale store?
i'm really struggling for money right now. i was kicked out of my house and literally don't have a penny. so this ring is the only thing besides my computer i can sell. is it possible to even get like -

    • ANSWER:
it depends on how much gold is worth that day and how much the person who is buying your ring is paying for it. My suggestion is to keep the class ring because like most class rings, it probably not worth a lot in terms of money. Maybe you should try selling another piece of jewelry you have. My suggestion is that if you really want to sell it you should ask somebody who you trust and knows what they're doing so you don't get ripped off.

okay so i have this engagement ring i need money so i need to sell it. I bought it for 3000 i know i wont get that all back but where can i take it to sell it? and maybe a pearl necklace in the process? anyone

    • ANSWER:
If you take it to a gold buyer in Portland, you won't get nothing but ~ 10-20% of what you paid for it. However, there is alternatives to sell that ring other than local Portland dealers. Go ahead and head over to www.sellgold-online.com for a way to mail in your ring for timely cash payment. They sell gold at their own auctions, and also refine gold from there. In your case, they can usually give you the better price than a local jewelry dealer as they have the best resources for sale.

  20. QUESTION:
When are they going to sell the synyster custom in white/gold stripes?
I was thinking about buying it if i could find it.

    • ANSWER:
You are unfortunately abit late... They went on sale in the US only around july or august and there were only 100 made (so you can imagine how highly they were demanded). I too were considering buying one but while I spent my time considering, it was whisked away. To be honest it is highly unlikly you will find one in stores or on guitar shops online. However you could find some luck on Ebay, it may be second hand but it will still be as sinister as Synyster himself!

  26. QUESTION:
When selling gold, why isn't white gold worth more htan yellow gold since it costs more when buying jewelry?
When buying jewelry, white gold is higher priced than yellow gold. So, why isn't it worth more when selling it to be melted down into other jewelry? Why do these places that buy gold only look at the karet count of the gold, and not if it is white or yellow gold?

    • ANSWER:
White gold is actually yellow gold covered in rhodium plating. So it is more expensive to buy because it has a few extra steps along the way. The rhodium gives it the white appeareance. When you sell it back, they are melting it down and separating the metals so they only want to know how much actual gold is in the jewelry (karatage) and they want to separate it from the alloy metals.

Is it worth having a white gold ring dipped before selling on ebay?
I have a white gold diamond ring from a previous relationship that I would like to sell. I know it was £160 when it was purchased 6 years ago but it has lost its "whiteness" a bit and I was wondering if it was worth having it dipped before selling on ebay in terms of the value added and likelihood of selling? It would cost you more to have them dipped, than the price you'll get from buyers.

  34. QUESTION:
How muchh money will i get if i sell my gold?
Okay, i have a 14k gold necklace, 14k gold bracelet, and a white gold necklace. At the mall, there's a place that buys scrap gold. How much money do you think i will get if i sell those three pieces of jewelry?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you can go there and get a quote. Secondly, Craigslist is a wonderful media for selling things in your area. Remember, whatever price they quote you has to leave room for profit. You might want to sell it on your own before you accept their gold quote. Don't let them push you in to it. Tell them you need to think about and talk to your mom/friend/uncle or whoever to give you an excuse as to why you can't answer them right away. Then try to sell them on your own.

  43. QUESTION:
How much money should you get if you sell 19 grams of 18k gold?
I have 3 bracelets I bought from a asian jewelry store and they are 18k gold I am trying to sell them so I can buy some white gold ones. how much should I get for them if they are about 19 grams of 18k gold.

    • ANSWER:
      24k gold is 100% gold so 18/24 = 75%,
Gold is priced in ounces so 19 grams = .67 ounces,
The current price of gold is 8.9 per ounce

So 75% of the .67 ounces of bracelets you have is .5 ounces of pure gold, so .5 x 628.9 = 4.45

So the value of the gold in the bracelets is worth about 4.45, but the design of the bracelets will add or decrease the value, plus the price of gold changes just like stock prices change, so the value of the gold in your bracelects will continually change.

  47. QUESTION:
Can you plate a yellow gold ring in white gold?
I am trying to buy my engagement ring but the one I want the company went under and they are no longer making the rings. Everyone I have tried has them in yellow gold (which I hate) and is sold out of the white gold. Does anyone know if it would be possible to buy a yellow gold ring and have it plated in white gold? Would it ruin the ring? Would it hold up? And would it look good?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, a yellow gold ring could be plated with white gold. However, most white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium--a member of the platinum family--to achieve that shiny white finish we all so love in the jewelry store window. White gold is actually a grayish color.

The plating process is simple and relatively inexpensive.

However, the plating will wear off and you will need to replate the ring relatively often. Plating is considered a temporary finish for jewelry. Any spot that the rhodium plating is wearing off on a yellow gold ring will be very apparent because of the the color contrast.

If you have your heart set on a particular style of ring in white gold and it is no longer being made because the company has gone out of business, I would find a jeweler who does custom work and would be willing to make the ring in white gold for you.

      Good luck.

  49. QUESTION:
I would like to know the current cost of 18k white gold per gram in US dollars?
And what is the price diffrence between selling and buying 18k white gold per gram?

    • ANSWER:
For 1 ounce of 24k gold people ask 6.80 (04/22/2009 06:18) as Em Kher said.
So price of 18k gold = 75% from price of 24k gold
      18k gold cost ~ 75% * 6.80 = 5.1 per ounce

      1 gram = 0.0352739619 ounces

      Then price for 18k gold per gram cost 5.1 * 0.0352739619 = .46

Answer: 18k white gold cost .46 per gram

  50. QUESTION:
How much are these 14K white gold cubic zirconia earrings worth?
I have these 14K white gold cubic zirconia 0.5 carat stud ear rings from Macy's. I'm selling them on eBay. They retail at 5. They still come in the original box and have label on them. Basically, they're brand new. I just want to know a realistic price to sell them at because I know retail prices are always exaggerated. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I work for a major jewelery brand so I get this question a lot. I would say between and dollars. Check prices online for brand new earrings like that on clearance sites. That's a pretty fair price for used, which they are even if you never wore them.
