   I have a few really nice pieces of gold plated jewelry, mainly necklaces with pendants and some earrings/bracelets.. A couple have a beautiful heart shaped swarovski crystal.      In most cases, they have a look-up table that tells them what to pay per gram for 10K, 12K, 14K, 18K, and so on. Most of them aren't knowledgeable enough to deviate from that look-up table.

     The gold and jewelry district in New York is based on West 47 Street, between 6th and 5th Avenue. Lots of small jewelry stores. You can't walk down the street without being approached by a hawker (some may be con men), asking "Have any jewelry to sell?"

     Here's an article about the area. I can't say whether they provide the best prices or whether all of them are honest, but at least there are a large concentration of potential buyers there.

   Why so many 'sell your gold' adverts on TV at the moment?
   I'm in the UK, and all of a sudden I'm seeing multiple versions of these 'do you have unwanted gold in your house? Send it to us and we'll give you loads of money..' etc etc.

   Why all of a sudden, are all of these adverts appearing?

     Because we're in the middle of a recession. Companies like these generally prey on individuals who are having financial problems; if you notice, the commercials make it sound like you send them a necklace, they send you serious money. Well, Good Morning America did a feature on the industry about 2 months ago; they had gold valued by a reputable appraiser. Sent it to the top 3 "buy your gold" advertisers; in one case, the amount offered was only about 1/4 of its actual worth. It's just another con artist game.

     Not to the pawn shop, they offer slightly lower price, whereby they will sell the items as second hand goods to make profit in the case of no redemption.
     A goldsmith or jewellery store may be a better alternative, they have the resource to recycle the gold into new items for better price.

    Where is the best place to sell your gold jewelry? Or to sell gold?

      I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

      Personally i dont think you should be selling gold through the mail. Do it in person with a reliable goldsmith.

    • ANSWER:
      If you are makng a good profit and you have got a lot then you could just top slice 10-20%.
      What with problems of sovereign debt, inflation etc. and buying by China, India etc. it is probably still worth having gold. At some stage the gold price will be running ahead of these factors (after all they are all known facts) and I suspect this is why Warren Buffet reportedly sold all his gold.
      If you sell gold then where do you reinvest?
      Also I think you should have other investments other than gold. You could look at mining- a company might be producing gold AND other metals as well, like Rio Tinto.
      Because the market has recently been down there are some good companies that have been affected, maybe unfairly and trading on discounted cash flow ratios of one. Most of the gold companies use a gold valuation of somewhere around 0 so shouldn't be too affected by a lower gold price. I have bought Hillgrove (HGO.AX) and GGG.L
      Don't forget if you are long of gold you are also, effectively, long of USD (not so good).

      Definitively cash4gold. They are the biggest and most dedicated to customer satisfaction.

    What's a fair price to sell your 14k and 18k gold per gram to dealer?
    I have some 14k gold to sell. One dealer offered 16.00 per gram. Is this a fair price based on current value of gold, or am I being taken?

      a gram for 14k is pretty damn good. I know in vegas right now alot of places are offering between and a gram for 14k. If you wanna know what the total worth per gram is you just have to do some basic math.

      Goto monex.com and look at live prices, as I write this now its at ,113 per ounce. Now to figure out the per gram price we have to take 1113 / 31.103 X the purity of gold(31.103 is a troy ounce, which is whats used in gold trading), which in this case is 14k so the purity is .585 which comes out to .93. Now may seem cheap when compared to but they must make some money also.

      If your dealing with a pawn shop then they will resell the gold to a company that melts it down. They get anywhere between 90% and 98% of the .93(or whatever the price is that day) from the melt down company.

      If you wanna do the math on your 18k pieces then the purity is .750 instead of the .585 of 14k.

      It's just the same old men is suits who pop up around times where people are low on cash. They're just pigs who are trying to cash in on others peoples lack of money and desire to make some fast. Not to mention those adverts are such crap quality i wouldn't be surprised if the mafia ran the whole thing.

      Any potential buyer will evaluate your jewelry for gold content, then offer you somewhat less that the spot value of the gold in your jewelry.

      You might get an appraisal at a jeweler so you have some idea of the value.

      Depending on the jewelry go to am antiques store, a jeweler or a coin dealer that deals with metals also.

Aim to get about 85 percent of what you calculated it’s worth. "

    I was watching a story on A Current Affair a couple of months ago and it was about being able to sell your old gold. I can't quite remember the company it mentioned where you can sell your gold. Any ideas?

      Yeah I think the place is in Sydney. The only reason I remembered it is because its just a few meters away form my office.

      Its on Castlereagh Street entrance to Picadilly Shpping center. there are two entrances, the one im refering to is the southern one. The shop is just before you walk inside the center. It looks more like a place wher you get alterations done but its realer a gold dealer. After the TV exposure I have seen scores of people waiting in line outside the place. I will try and get a name and number for you when I go out for a walk...but today is the RED day in sydney and its hard to breath outside.

    I've seen those slick advertised gold buyers with pretty women offering to buy your gold for a large sum. It sounds too good to be true and more like mafia style advertising. Did anyone get ripped off by sending their gold in the mail?

      Use a local company if you want to sell your gold. Look in the newspaper, there are a lot of ads. Don't use the TV morons. You don't know what your gold weighs and you have no way of knowing if the weight they give you is correct. If you decline their offer, you are charged postage and insurance on the shipment - both ways.

      The complaints are numerous.
      Even Clark Howard in CNN had a segment on this borderline scam.
      You send in your gold, get pennies for it, if you complain, you are stuck.
      Clark said that you would be lucky to get 1/3 of what you should get.

      Take it 3 of your local pawn shops, or looking in the yello pages for jewly or gold buyers.
      Get 3 estimates, and tell each shop what you are doing, so they know you are shopping around and give you the best price.

      Don't get taken every time - just about every TV commerical is a scam.

    There's a legit jewelry store in the NICE side of town that is buying gold jewelry. When I called today she encouraged me to come in. I asked about that and she said they weren't buying gems right now. So I asked if they would take them back and give them to me.... she hesitated and said they COULD take them out, but there might be a charge for it depending on the degree of difficulty on getting the stone out.       Weird. There are tons of jewelers who buy gold here. In fact I recently had a gold buying party. And my husband sold his class ring. He had a ruby in it and we asked if they could take it out and they said yes and did not charge me for it. I made 0+ dollars from selling all my gold at that party and I made another 0+ from the 10% I got off the other gold that was sold at my party. I highly suggest it if you don't use it anymore.

    If you want to sell your scrap gold, how can you know you're getting a fair price?

    • ANSWER:
      24 Karat is 1/24 pure gold by weight. Thus, 24K is considered pure gold.

      If 24K is pure gold, then 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58% gold etc. Given an approx spot gold price of 00/oz., scrap value of One (1) gram of gold is as follows:

      10K .67 per gram.
      14K .49 per gram
      18K .64 per gram
      24K .93 per gram

      I checked a few things selling on ebay. They are going for roughly about the same prices as shown in the above table.

      So you need to weigh the item first, then do the math using the table above.

      Yup...it is all called S C A M....They buy your gold for 10 cents on the dollar, if you are lucky--highway robbery. The structured settlements, will pay you MAYBE 15 cents on the final dollar amount of your annuity--so if your annuity would pay out a Million dollars over 40 years, they will give you 0,000 now (which you have to pay taxes on!). HOW generous! Don't even get me STARTED on reverse mortgages! Sure, you get to put up to 50% of the value of your home in your bank account to help you live out your retirement years--but then when you die, your house is seized by the lending institution and sold. NO CHANCE for the family to redeem the amount given out on it years before....

      Stay away from that Cash 4 Gold. I heard of a person who used them for cashing in 2 US per 1933 Gold Pieces. She received 0 cash for both. This was about 2 weeks ago. Problem is the dealer she bought them from 10 years ago would have given her 00 for both of those coins. Basically she got 1/3 of the total value. Cash 4 Gold is a scam pure and simple. Keep your gold. You may need it in the near future.

      What you have heard is wrong, Maybe a gold farming company with a few chinese gold farmers working can make 200$ a day. But as a lone player you couldn't possibly farm enough gold a day without going crazy to sell that much. As well as players go to well known gold farming companies to buy gold as they are trustworthy. Not to say you aren't trustworthy but you would need to get your name out there. As for leveling and selling characters it takes atleast 6-10 play time on average to hit level 70 depending on the class and you will have terrible gear and an average mount just hitting 70 so you won't be able to sell your character for much at all. So personaly with the amount of time you consume i do not think it is worth it.

If you have followed this link, scan your computer and remove any viruses immediately, then change your password.

    They are currently in a self directed IRA, so I have no problems with selling them.

      That is risky right now. As you're propbably aware, Gold dropped huge yesterday. However, it's a bargain right now.

      I sold a mutual fund a few weeks ago and bought gold. And don't listen to the guys who say you have to pay 10% penalty for selling, etc. If you want gold in your IRA, buy a gold fund such as Fidelity Select Gold (FSAGX) or a gold exchange traded fund. it can stay in your IRA portfolio without incurring any penalties.

      Gold is risky right now, nobody knows which direction it will go. Personally, I think it will be good for the short term while the dollar stays weak. But keep a CLOSE eye on the market. As soon as the dollar shows signs of recovery, dump it quick.

      If you're unsure, don't do it. As I said, it's risky. The market is experiencing unprecedented turmoil, and not even Gold is a safe bet.

      You should go to more than one pawn shops and ask how much they'd give you for the gold so you don't get ripped off. But if you look 14, maybe it'll be better if you go with an adult.

      honestly, no.

      like,omg, i have been playing WoW for 5 and 1/years, and it used to be WAAAAAAAAAAYYYY worse. literally every five minutes you would get whispered by a spammer. it got so bad i had an "anti-spam macro" and any time i got spammed i would spam them back 50 times worse. i actually spammed a few of them so hard i got them to log off. then on top of the whispers they were in ALL the channels in EVERY zone. it sucked so hard

      now i see them in trade channel and general, in the cities, and thats it. and if i see them, its MAYBE once an hour. then i report them, and blizz does work

      like, ok, it is a LITTLE bit annoying, but trust me dude, it used to be way way wayyyyyyyyyyy worse.
