The difference between jewelry that gets a second look or even purchased and jewelry that doesn't is often in the way it is displayed. Many jewelers overlook the importance of displaying their art correctly and feel the work will sell itself. This isn't always so. So what makes a good jewelry display?
Effective jewelry displays require balance between style and restraint. While there is no perfectly right or perfectly wrong way to show your jewelry, there are a few things to consider.
One feature of a good jewelry display is that it reflects the style and personality of the jewelry line and the taste of the targeted customer. Be as creative with your display props, backgrounds, and textures as you are when creating your jewelry. For ideas, flip through catalogs that feature women's fashions and jewelry. The idea is not to copy the way the catalogs display jewelry, but to use their settings as a springboard to a great new display of your own.
Of course one can get carried away and put too much into their jewelry display cabinet, which can communicate the wrong message. Picture an entire table filled with bamboo stalks, tiger-print fabric, and driftwood under and behind every piece of jewelry. This is far too busy and cluttered, even if those elements do communicate the style of the jewelry line.
Jewelry should show up against whatever props and background materials you use. A clear crystal quartz pendant would be practically invisible on a leopard print silk scarf, but a chunky silver cuff bracelet on the same scarf would stand out nicely.
A background that contrasts visually with the jewelry will help the jewelry stand nicely. Choose no more than three colors for your display elements and tablecloths - for example gray, white, and blue. Each item you use for your jewelry displays would be one of your three colors. Also choose no more than three textures - for example stone, lace, and linen; each display element would be one of these textures.
When laying our your jewelry display, take proportion and height into consideration. You can use all kinds of things to vary your heights in your jewelry displays, so experiment.
Other ideas for visual interest are to put things at unusual angles, and set props at a diagonal. Diagonals are always dynamic.
Lighting is another critical aspect of showing your jewelry. All jewelry looks best when it is well lit. Whether you are showing your jewelry in a store, at a show or on the street, you can't count of the lighting to be of the quality you want, so be sure to purchase the right type of lighting equipment to correctly light your works.
Now for practical matters. Be sure all of your jewelry is cleaned and shining. You don't want to show dusty jewelry or work that has been tarnished. Also, avoid clutter at all cost. Clutter creates confusion in the mind of your customer, which will decrease your chance of making a sale. Keep your display as streamlined as possible without sacrificing interest and originality.
Last, be sure customers can touch your jewelry. While you may be a bit hesitant due to shoplifting, keep in mind that studies have shown that customers are four times more likely to buy something they have touched or tried it on.
Will your jewelry sell or attract customers? This could be entirely up to you and the way you have put consideration into your display.

QUESTION:
what is the right way to sell your jewelry?
i want to sell somthing on ebay but im not sure how to sell it.
what would be the right way to sell my jewelry.-
ANSWER:
eBay is one way to go, but you might also just try setting up your own website. It's free and easy to do with Microsoft Office Live, and you can even accept payments with paypal. With your own site, you can give your store the look you want. It's challenging to drive traffic to your site at first, but if you get some good links, get listed in directories like indie friendly and bust girl wide web, you should start getting hits. Plus you can tell all your friends and family to help spread the word, too!
You could also open a shop at etsy.com, where traffic is already high, but they charge for listing as well as selling your items.
hope this helps!

QUESTION:
What are the best ways to sell your jewelry?
Say I make jewelry and I want to do more than just give it away to family as I have been doing for years. What are some of the best ways to get some attention?-
ANSWER:
Beyond ebay and the other obvious answers, you can also sell it on Amazon as well. There are also other online marketplaces where you can place your items in virtual consignment, as it were. There are also a huge number of auction places beyond eBay. There's Auctions.com, Yahoo auctions, there's auctions for Christians, auctions for Pagans, auctions for collectors of every kind. Google 'auctions'. You'll see what I mean.Another way to get attention is to blog about it. Get yourself an eBay or Yahoo Auctions account and then create a blog account and link the two. Visit other people's blogs and start chatting and commenting. Go to forums about what you craft and start answering questions and if the moderators will allow, promote yourself shamelessly. Keep at it and be tenacious. Eventually, you will be able to afford your own website and you can go from there.
A more traditional way is to start attending shows as a seller. Start with smaller non-juried shows and work your way up. There is an entire market structure for wholesale crafters available. There are craft associations you can join. Go here. http://www.craftassoc.com/sbmkt.html. There may be local craft associations in your city, county or state you can join. You will need at least a resale license. Check with your state dept of Taxation.

QUESTION:
is it worth it to sell your jewelry for some money?
I am in a touch economical situation..so i was thinking of selling some jewelry. I dont really use them nor care about them.-
ANSWER:
Be very careful. Get at least 3 bids from reputable jewelers. Do not go to Pawn shops. If it is high quality get it appraised. You should get at least half of appraised price when selling. Don't let the jeweler that does the appraisal know that you are looking to sell it. If it is gold get the gram weight. That pretty much determines the value.

QUESTION:
what is the best to sell your gold jewelry in new york and new jersey area?
it's recession. not finding job to trying to sell my jewelry to bring food on the table.-
ANSWER:
The gold and jewelry district in New York is based on West 47 Street, between 6th and 5th Avenue. Lots of small jewelry stores. You can't walk down the street without being approached by a hawker (some may be con men), asking "Have any jewelry to sell?"Here's an article about the area. I can't say whether they provide the best prices or whether all of them are honest, but at least there are a large concentration of potential buyers there.

Better bring proof of ownership, or they might not want to deal with you, thinking that you might have stolen merchandise.

QUESTION:
What is the best jewelry store to sell your unwanted jewelry?
I'm trying to sell some unwanted jewelry, but I have no idea which place is the best to sell them at. Is there a place near me (Union City, CA) that's good and does it have a website?-
ANSWER:
The best thing would be to sell it/ them to other people not to a store. The store is looking to make a profit. They are not going to give you what you paid for them, a retail price. The store has to sell the piece with their mark up attached to make that profit. So they will offer on average 30-40% of the price you are thinking that it is worth. Also keep in mind that they by law can not sell these items as new pieces, and as such most buyers expect a price cut for that fact. The person(s) that might buy used jewelry from another person outside of a store is most often going to pay closer to the price of what the piece is worth. They are also looking for a deal but they are not trying to turn that profit that the store is. With all that being said if you get 50-70% of retail you did/ will do well. Other options would be to scrap the items and trade them in for the refining money. You will take a bigger hit in how much you get than selling it out right. The same for selling to a pawn shop. Most pawn shops are used to people who are desperate for the money and try to give you as little as possible. Think closer to 10-20% of retail.

QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell your old jewelry?
I inherited some jewelry that has no sentimental value and would like to sell it. Any suggestions?-
ANSWER:
Be smart....take the jewelry to a jewelry shop and ask someone who has the knowledge in it to tell you what you have....and how much money is involved......Don't take it to a pawn shop...or gold exchange...they will weigh each item and tell you the price of the Yellow gold or White gold price is...but not the stones.....you will be giving it to them.........sorry but true
Take a minute to clean the pieces you have.......a soft tooth brush and warm water with a dab of toot paste on it and brush each piece clean top......bottom......sides.....and look at what you really have........If you have sons or daughters....maybe you would like them to have something........Give friends a chance to see if they want to buy some of it.....or family~
List it on ebay...let someone list it for you
put add in news paper
List what you have here ......if you know what you have....add pics and let those on yahoo answers look at it.....You might get people here interested

QUESTION:
ATTENTION Jewelry makers: how do you sell your jewelry on the internet?or any other way, not on the internet
please help!!!!!!!!!!!-
ANSWER:
Your question is very broad, because you didn't specify what sort of jewelry you want to sell, your audience target, location, inventory level and so on, but for start ( regardless of the project size) you will need:1. Good understanding of how e-commerce work in general.
2. Decent website with custom made backend to handle, manage and present your jewelry inventory.
3. Good understanding of the macro photography and/or 3D rendering ( for the jewelry item presentation)
4. Cash for the promotion ( Goodle Ad words)
5. Web development studio/agency/company which understands gemstone/jewelery e-business.There are only few decent jewelry websites which actually sale something and profitable. For example mondera.com and bluenile.com, but they cost millions in development charges and advertising. Mondera spent about 40 mil dollars just on website development alone.
Then there are rare cool jewelry websites, like http://www.fameo.co.uk/ (check their jewelry pictures and specifications, it's amazing), but I have no idea how they can possibly put something like that together without spending at least 200-300 USD per item-entry.
Then, there are bunch of expensive, but useless Flash jewelry websites, for example http://www.theofennell.com/. They sell nothing and serve "e-pin" purpose only.
And finally, there thousands of ugly jewelry-home-pages, which is nothing but Internet pollution.
So basically you are looking at about 20-30.000 USD start-up costs for the small jewelry e-commerce website and about 2500-5000 USD per month in management and advertising charges.

QUESTION:
Does anyone know the best way to sell your old jewelry and get the most for it?
I've got and old engagement ring/ wedding band set that I want to sell. It was my mothers before she and my father got divorced and she gave it to me to sell to get more money for the engagement ring I'm going to buy my girlfriend. I'm worried about getting what its actually worth and not getting hosed.Do jewelry stores at the mall purchase old jewelry?
-
ANSWER:
There is a huge mark up on jewelry. So, the best thing to do is search similar rings on Ebay. See what they are selling for.
Be realistic at what you can get for it before setting your price.I would sell it on Ebay because you have that many more people looking at it then if you sell it locally or want a jeweller to buy it (which they will give you nothing for it~ Same with a pawn shop).
If it's worth it, you can always get the ring appraised before you try to sell it, so that you know how big the stones are, quality, etc... and what they think it's worth.

QUESTION:
Would you sell your jewelry and your spouses jewelry to get money to get out of debt???
We have a credit card that we're trying to pay off, but we're barely making it with our other bills, so I'm considering on selling my jewelry like earrings, rings which he gave me, and pendants, to get some money. I also want to sell a ring which I bought for him which costed me about 800 dollars, and it I sell it I'll at least get about half of what I paid for it. If I were to sell all these items, I would pay almost the full amount of the credit card. I have second thoughts, because I don't want to tell my husband, but I also want us to get out of debt. What should I do??
All the jewelry that I plan to sell were given to me only...jewelry isn't important to me. I just want us to be better....without this debt we can save money to buy a home...etc. He does know about this credit card debt, it's just that there's not much money we can send....the jewelry that would help us the most is the ring I bought for him. I can buy him one later, but with my own money....I love my partner, but he just won't see this idea as I do.-
ANSWER:
First before you sell anything cut those credit cards up and stop using them now. That is how so many people get into debit in the first place, if you don't have the money to pay for it than you really don't need it right?? Second you are thinking of these rings and stuff as objects, which they are but do they not hold memories of the times that you and your husband spent together, the reason that the ring was given. It maybe just jewelry, but look past and see what they really mean. Try before that to get help with your debit, call and see if you can consolidate your bills, they now have debit councilors to help people like yourself, but remember get rid of those cards and that will start you on the right road. Good Luck and please don't do it behind your husbands back that could hurt more than your credit, it could hurt your marriage. Talk to him if that is the way that you think that you need to go.

QUESTION:
Can pawn shops sell your jewelry without any notice?
(sorry for rambling, but please read it all!) I have been paying for the last 6 months on my jewelry that I pawned for a loan. It was my wedding rings and other very special rings from when my children were born. (I wish I never did this, our house was going to foreclose and I was desperate. We still lost the house.)
We were living in Texas at the time and moved in December. I talked with the manager of the shop and he understood and we were mailing the monthly payments and they were going to be a few days late each month because of when my husband was getting paid. He said it was fine. So since then we have been paying every month. Today I called to tell them I can pay off the whole thing and to mail me back the jewelry. They said back in January they changed management. They had received my payment a little late and put my jewelry up for sale. No one ever contacted me. I still paid February. No one contacted me. I paid March. No one contacted me. So now its today and they said all but one ring is gone, sold. They said they didn't have a number to contact me and they just put the money orders in a safe that they had pulled out this morning, coincidentally. They had both my addresses and Im pretty dang sure I gave them my number before I left.
Now all my jewelry is gone except one ring, of course the least special one to me. I can't believe it. Ive been crying all day.
The guy felt so bad on the phone and was going to try and contact anyone who bought the jewelry, if they have their info, which they should.
Can they do this? What are your thoughts???
I remembered a detail that I forgot to put in here. In January we sent them a check, ON TIME, but it was a personal check and my husband wasn't aware of it needing to be a money order. The manager called ME and said we cant accept this, could you send me a money order asap. So I went right away to and got it, sent it over night to him which would have gotten to him before they put my jewelry on sale.
I talked with the new store manager and he said that it sounds messed up and he called his area supervisor. He has to call me back tomorrow because he couldnt get ahold of her. I talked with a lawyer and he IS going to help because this was not done legally because they would have had that money that day in their hands. And he still neglected to let me know anything further, and let me continue to send them my money.-
ANSWER:
You had a verbal contract with the first manager. You had a written contract with the pawn shop. The bottom line is the written contract is what counts. It says in all pawn contracts when payment is due. You did not pay on time. You just got lucky that a nice manager gave you a break for a few months. Yes, they can sell your jewelry if you do not pay on time. You can pay on the transaction for ten years and if you are late one payment still lose your merchandise. They are actually doing a huge favor to you if they are trying to hunt down your jewelry. Most shops wouldn't bother. I worked in the pawn business for several years and got a few promotions for one of the nation's largest pawn chains. Unfortunately, sentimental value is meaningless in the pawn business. It is all about loans and collateral.
Edit: You can not sue. Good faith doesn't count. They have no legal requirement to call you before selling your merchandise. The only legal requirement they have is to honor the terms of the written contract which they did.

QUESTION:
Is it better to pawn your gold jewelry or sell it to a cash for gold place?
I need some extra cash and wanted to get rid of some gold jewelry I never wear. I don't know which would be more profitable... Pawn Shop or Cash for Gold store.-
ANSWER:
Neither, Consumer Reports has some good advice on selling gold:"The Consumer Reports Money Adviser compared what one of the television companies offered for a gold band a couple of years ago with what a local jeweler and an on-line gold buyer would pay, the TV company paid a much lower price. Instead, take your gold to a reputable jeweler in your area for an appraisal. Note the carat of the metal, and ask the jeweler to tell you the weight in pennyweights or troy ounces. Use this online calculator to figure out the value based on the price of gold that day. Then quickly (because prices fluctuate) call several jewelry or coin stores and ask how much they pay for gold. Aim to get about 85 percent of what you calculated it’s worth. "

Where is the best place to sell your gold jewelry? Or to sell gold?-

I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

QUESTION:
Is "Cash4Gold" a good place to sell your old jewelry?-
ANSWER:
Any business that outright lies in their commercials, I would not trust !
Example, one female states in the commercial " I sent in my old wedding rings from a previous marriage, and got my money the very next day".
Just where in this country can anyone send any mail and get the reply the very next day ?
Next thing to consider, is, how do they figure a fair amount for your gold, and how can you be sure they are in fact truthful about the weight and quality they are paying you for?
And how can you reclaim your jewelry if not satisfied?
Never deal such transactions over or through the mail.
But of course, these are my personal opinions, and since it's your jewelry, it's also your choice, so good luck and beware.

QUESTION:
Would you sell your old gold jewelry....?
There's a legit jewelry store in the NICE side of town that is buying gold jewelry. When I called today she encouraged me to come in. I have lots of old rings, bracelets, and necklaces that I don't wear and don't want to wear anymore. The only problem is that some of them have stones in them. I asked about that and she said they weren't buying gems right now. So I asked if they would take them back and give them to me.... she hesitated and said they COULD take them out, but there might be a charge for it depending on the degree of difficulty on getting the stone out. Well, in other words, they just keep the stones for free and then probably turn around and use them? Is this standard practice?Would you sell your old jewelry?
-
ANSWER:
Weird. There are tons of jewelers who buy gold here. In fact I recently had a gold buying party. And my husband sold his class ring. He had a ruby in it and we asked if they could take it out and they said yes and did not charge me for it. I made 0+ dollars from selling all my gold at that party and I made another 0+ from the 10% I got off the other gold that was sold at my party. I highly suggest it if you don't use it anymore.

Can you sell Your own gold to a jewelry store?
I might sell my gold and idk if ifngood to sell it there or the pawn shop??-
ANSWER:
Not to the pawn shop, they offer slightly lower price, whereby they will sell the items as second hand goods to make profit in the case of no redemption.
A goldsmith or jewellery store may be a better alternative, they have the resource to recycle the gold into new items for better price.

QUESTION:
How do you best price your handmade jewelry for a fast sell and profit?
all handmade by me, materials, price of, and time spent on vary greatly. also, there is transportation and display costs. an example of what i sell is : 16 inch onyx and black agate necklace with a teardrop mother of pearl pendant, 18 inch 3 strand turquoise colored seed beaded necklace with a handmade one of a kind 30mm sterling silver dolphin and hoop pendant. both took about 2.4 hours to make.-
ANSWER:
Normally, price is associated with quality, especially when it comes to handmade jewelry. You don't want to price your jewelry too low because people will think maybe something's wrong with it. Fast sell and good profit are almost like oxymorons when it comes to jewelry. A lot of time and money goes into making it, so don't underprice your jewelry. Of course, this means it might not sell as fast. You can calculate both wholesale and retail price. Labor is the amount you want to pay yourself per hour. Depending on your experience it can be anywhere from and up per hour. A common pricing formula is the following.
Wholesale price = (Materials X 2) + (labor X # of hours)
Retail price = wholesale price X 1.50(50% markup)The markup over the wholesale price can be as high or as low as you want but 50% is pretty common. The display and transportation costs cannot be part of the price since those are business expenses. You have to markup your jewelry to the extent that the price will cover all your expenses plus leave you with a decent profit.

QUESTION:
To sell handmade jewelry: besides Ebay & your own website, what are some good places online to sell?
I create my own handmade jewelry:
http://www.sentimentaljewelrycreations.comI have been selling some pieces on Ebay and my website primarily serves as an online catalog. I need to add more though !
I am looking for some more profitable places that aren't high cost to sell my jewelry. Im also looking for a way to "break into the retail world" with my jewelry. I would love to be able to sell it to other online shops, or other shops around the U.S. I have it in one small craft shop in my hometown-but i live in a VERY small town-about 2100 to be exact and theres not alot of places there to sell it in.
So im looking for more places online and around the country to sell in or to approach with my jewelry. One day--i would like this to be my own business and to not have to work full time for somebody else
--its always been one of my dreams to have my own business--or to even have my own little shop--selling my jewelry
....Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks..-
ANSWER:
A better place to sell handmade jewelry is Etsy.com http://www.etsy.com , which sells everything handmade. If you do handmade products, this is the place to go.Selling fees are WAAAYYYY cheaper than ebay. They may not have the avalanche of buyers that ebay has, but it can save you tons in listing fees. What's a good site for selling your own jewelry, or stuff that's nicer than Craigslist, and FREE?
That about sums it up. I want to be able to post pics, negotiate the sale, and accept credit cards. FREE is an important criterion, so if there's a third party, or even a SEPARATE third party you know of that can handle the credit card transaction for free, as well as the listing site, that would be fabby! Thanks!

QUESTION:
Is there any place you can sell jewelry?
Can you sell your diamond rings and necklace for a little under appraisal? If so where?-
ANSWER:
The appraisal is normally a very inflated price, for insurance purposes only. It would give you enough to replace the piece at nearly any jewelry store. No one (in their right mind anyway) would pay appraisal price, or anything close to it for a piece bought from a private party.Example is that a ring I bought my wife appraised at nearly three times the purchase price, but I worked my ass off to find it. Doubling is easy and can be done at many large jewelry discounters. And remember that is for a new piece, of a specific style chosen by the individual, that would need to be replaced.
In just a few words: YA CAN'T DO IT
Sorry!

QUESTION:
Can u sell your handmade jewlry thru ebay?
I want to sell jewelry that I make on etsy but if that doesn't work out, I'd like to do it on ebay-can I do that-sell my work on there? or is ebay strictly for reselling stuff?-
ANSWER:
Yes you can but honestly you would fair better selling your handmade products on Etsy.com. The site is devoted strictly to handmade artists and its very popular. Its the ideal site for you because the fees are low so you don't have to worry about having to overprice your items to circumvent the astronomical fees that EBay charges. I would highly recommend that you check them out.

QUESTION:
Can I sell this jewelry on my own website if I did not make it?
I was wondering...you no those websites and catalogs that sell stores wholesale? For example: when a website makes jewelry, and they are selling 20 bracelets all together for real cheap-and they say it can be sold for resale...does that mean you can resell it wherever you want? Can you make your own website and sell this jewelry, if you bought it from this wholesale catalog?-
ANSWER:
Yes, you can resell it. You just shouldn't say you made it yourself. Before you do that, though, consider the cost of a website, the time needed to keep your website up to date, how you will collect payments, paying sales taxes and inventory taxes, keeping track of profits and losses for income taxes. That list will do for a start.Good luck!

QUESTION:
We see lots of places willing to buy our gold jewelry for lots of cash. Who is buying the gold from them?
If you sell your gold jewelry at one of those places that buys your gold, who buys the gold from them? It looks like there is a demand for the gold and we just don't know about it and seem to be selling our gold jewelry at these places. The value of the dollar is declining and it's no longer backed by gold. What happens if the dollar collapses?-
ANSWER:
They are hoarding it. They will not pay you a fair price either. You are better off selling at a garage sale, online, or to a person. The ones that are buying it up now are speculating that the price will go sky high and it will. Keep it if you don't really need to sell it.
