   For example if the market value of a ring is 00 because of the diamond and gold on it, how can a jewelry store sell it on sale for sale 00?

   Thinking about Kay Jewelers compared to a local jeweler. Kay Jewelers has an anniversary sale so I wonder if its a deal or is the Kay Jewelers stuff a lower quality?

     Most jewelry in jewelry stores is marked up about 200%- or more. Therefore, they can take off quite a bit and still make a profit.

     Diamonds are hard when it comes to pricing. The value has to do with the color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Unless you are an expert, it would be difficult to determine if one diamond is worth more than another. A one carat diamond could be less valuable than a 1/2 carat diamond of a much higher quality.

     Then there is the price of gold. It has gone up recently so if the gold was purchased a few years ago, the jeweler paid a lot less than current price for it.

     This is really a job for an expert - or a jeweler that you really trust.

   Is it worth having a white gold ring dipped before selling on ebay?
   I have a white gold diamond ring from a previous relationship that I would like to sell. I know it was £160 when it was purchased 6 years ago but it has lost its "whiteness" a bit and I was wondering if it was worth having it dipped before selling on ebay in terms of the value added and likelihood of selling? I am also unsure how much to put it on as a starting price.

     It would cost you more to have them dipped, than the price you'll get from buyers.

     You are going to get what the store is willing to pay for it.
     Unless you gold is 100% most jewelry will only be 24 ct gold you can't quote what gold is going for by the ounce and weigh the jewerly.

     If you have old jewelry take it to a couple of stores and go with the best price.

    Best Way to sell 14k Gold rings?
    I have just came upon some 14k gold rings which are fairly new, almost like a collection of rings. When i researched the price for gold on some websites i got that i could sell it for around £13 per gram. I have around 100 grams, which is still good money but recently i read a daily mail article about the sites which i was looking at saying that they were HUGE rip offs and were selling for around triple that price. I have also checked some jewellers but they are offering poor amounts of money. Does anyone know the best way to sell these rings successfully?

      Please remember that gold is not weighed in the normal way - one 'Troy Ounce' weighs approx 31 grammes, a normal ounce weighs 28g.

12. QUESTION:
    Thinking about selling my rings, how do I find out their worth and how should I go about selling them?
    I have 3 gold rings (one emerald, one jade and the other I am not sure). I am wanting to find out not only what the mistery stone is but how much they are worth. I am not sure I want to fork out a chunk of change to get them officially appraised, especially if they aren't worth much...

      Take them to a family jeweler or someone who appraises antiques. A pawn shop could give you an estimate, but probably only for the worth of the gold weight. They also may not be able to identify your mystery stone.

      If you don't have a family jeweler, ask a fine jewelry counter associate the next time you're in a department, but make sure they're not waiting on someone else and aren't too busy.

      Unless you sell to a private buyer you will not get as much as you would probably like... Diamonds can add to the cost, depending on their size and quality... A few years ago it was .00 per point on a diamond... Gold in almost any jewelry store will be bought for maybe 60% of the actual gold weight.... not the total weight of ring. Someone's idea of ebay is good, but if this is a high ticket item you should have it appraised by a jewelery appraiser. People are cautious when they can't actually see the piece... But if you hve papers to back up your statements that might help...Good Luck

      He's right. Jewelers have huge markups, you pay for that store full of shiny stuff every time you buy a ring.

      10K gold is worth .44/gram right now, I don't know much about diamonds. Jewelers would be the only ones that would buy unset diamonds, not much market for them on the street.

      If it's worth a good chunk of change, you might take it to Bonham & Butterfield's. They do auctions about four times a year.

      Get it appraised somewhere, but tell them it's not for insurance purposes (which is always a good deal higher) so you can get a better idea of its worth.

      I don't know of stores that buy outright, but be aware that they would not give you retail price.

    How can I sell gold (wedding) rings and get some semblence of our money back?
    My ring needs resized and I want a different style, and my husband's also needs to be made a smaller size. But we have in all five gold rings, three 10 carat and two 14 carat. Our local jeweler would only offer -75 for the whole lot. That seems extremely low to me. I'd like to get at least half our money back so that we can just buy my other ring and resize his.     Without going to a pawn shop which would come nowhere near the value of what gold is worth on the market these days. I saw on the news people were taking chains and rings in but not to pawnshops. I am now divotrced and will never wear the gold he gave me. Both yellow and white gold.

      Gold can be re-melted and used again and again. And, gold works for everyone. The gold price is based on pure gold, but most jewelry isn't pure and is often between 10 and 18 karats, which reduces the price by 40% to 70%. Shops who purchase gold jewelry also take a percentage.

      Independant Jewellers do purchase gold jewelry as a trade in on new purchases. I would give them a call to find out who does buy without having to trade it in on new.

      Iron Cross Antiques & Jewellery Ltd (780) 952-2900 in Alberta Avenue purchase gold along with antiques. They even make house calls.

      The other options are selling them privately. Most purchasers want an appraisal with it though. You could try selling them by any of the following methods:
      Advertising in the Edmonton Journal, Sun or Examiner
      Online at www.Kijiji.ca
      Or selling them on consignment at some of the jewelers. They will of course take a percentage of the selling price but it may be the next best thing to outright selling to a shop and less hassle then advertising and selling yourself.

Before selling to anyone make sure you know the approximate value of your items ( especially since gold prices have gone up dramatically in the last little while) May I suggest one more thing - many people who divorce and have jewelry have had them made into custom made new jewelry.

      100% absolutely DON'T send it to one of the tv gold advertising companies...they will not give you a good price at all.

      i would try selling privately....but without the diamond weight & clarity etc...it is hard to put a price on it. if they are small diamonds & there are 5 of them...perhaps it is 1/4 - 1/2 carat....so on this basis...i would start my price at around £150. 18K gold is the best for jewellery so that is good your ring is 18K.

      if you have no luck....try Ebay as somebody else said & put a reserve of £100 on it & see how you go. jewellers wouldn't buy it back...they are only happy to sell to you at extortionate prices with their 1000% mark up - so i doubt you will be lucky there.

      Try to sell it to a jeweler. Even ebay would be better than the cash4gold types.

      Jewelry is sold at incredible markups, far more than the stones and metal are worth. The stones should be worth more than the small amount of gold, so a gold-only offer is a huge ripoff.

      The pawn shop will give you a price for what they will pay you for it. Often, they will give you a little more for it if you say you want a loan on it and they think you'll be returning to buy it back. Have you checked into any scrap gold dealers or though about craigslist or ebay? It is possible to have the ring altered for another person(new stone, high school and such).

    Every time I look to sell some of my gold jewellery Trevor-D is the name people say. Why does he pay such a high price for used engagement rings etc???

      He has paid me the highest prices I have ever been stated for some of my estate jewellery that I had left to me in a will!
