Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

Selling Gold

With the price of gold at an all-time high, lots of people have decided to cash in some of their out dated gold jewelry. Prior to selling your gold to an on-line gold buyer, you must have the proper expectation. Here are a couple things to always remember whenever setting up your expectation for payment:

1) Cash payments from your precious metal buyer will not reflect retail cost.
The cost to you for jewelry is actually a blend of a couple of things, first gold prices and the second is the artistic worth of the jewelry. Stores have been known to mark up retail prices by three, ten and in some cases twenty times the price of the metals. Even when some gold jewelry was purchased on sale,it will always be priced much higher than the actual intrinsic price of the gold.

Precious metal buyers hardly ever look at the artistic value of the item, but rather only evaluate the price of precious metal, the purity and the mass when analyzing the value of a item of jewelry.

2) Insurance valuations will be for "retail price replacement value."
A coverage evaluation of your gold jewelry will not equal the price of the metal. Insurance coverage valuations establish the price for you to replace a lost or stolen piece at retail value. The fine print of many insurance valuations say, "Not an offer to buy". The main thing, policy appraisals indicate what you can purchase the gold jewelry for, never what you might sell it for.

3) Jewelers employ appraisals as a marketing tool.
Jewelry retailers may offer you a lot more for your merchandise for trade-in only. You'd be acquiring "more" for your piece, but only in exchange for a different piece which has been marked up by the retailer.

4) Not every identifying markings will be accurate.
In some cases a piece could have been purposely inaccurately stamped by the vendor to defraud the consumer. Gold buyers make use of state-of-the art screening technology to be able to test the precious metal we get. Although stamps are found on most items in order to indicate its karat or precious metal purity level, not all hallmarks or distinguishing marks are accurate.

Most nations around the world do not require an independent third party to confirm jewelry's precious metal content, therefore some deceitful vendors stamp jewelry improperly in order to misrepresent the quality and to make consumers think they're getting a fair bargain

Alternatively, the opposite may also be true. Occasionally jewelry will have no stamp whatsoever, even though it is genuine gold. This is especially the case with older pieces or foreign items.

  4. QUESTION:
Can I make real money selling Gold or High Level Characters in World of Warcraft?
I am thinking about getting World of Warcraft because I have heard people can make real money as much as a full-time job just gold farming and selling high level characters in the game. I've heard people can make up to 0 per day just doing this? Is there any REAL guides out there on how to pursue this? Is it legal to sell your gold or characters on eBay? Any help would be great!

    • ANSWER:
What you have heard is wrong, Maybe a gold farming company with a few chinese gold farmers working can make 200$ a day. But as a lone player you couldn't possibly farm enough gold a day without going crazy to sell that much. As well as players go to well known gold farming companies to buy gold as they are trustworthy. Not to say you aren't trustworthy but you would need to get your name out there. As for leveling and selling characters it takes atleast 6-10 play time on average to hit level 70 depending on the class and you will have terrible gear and an average mount just hitting 70 so you won't be able to sell your character for much at all. So personaly with the amount of time you consume i do not think it is worth it.

  5. QUESTION:
What are your experiences selling gold?
I keep seeing the Cash 4 Gold commercials on tv, plus local jewelers are advertising that they will buy scrap gold. I was wondering if anyone had specific examples of selling gold and how much they got. I have some pieces and I don't know if I should sell online (and which companies to avoid) go to a jeweler or if I should just pawn them. They don't have stones or anything in them so I would just want the gold worth. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Stay away from that Cash 4 Gold. I heard of a person who used them for cashing in 2 US per 1933 Gold Pieces. She received 0 cash for both. This was about 2 weeks ago. Problem is the dealer she bought them from 10 years ago would have given her 00 for both of those coins. Basically she got 1/3 of the total value. Cash 4 Gold is a scam pure and simple. Keep your gold. You may need it in the near future.

  6. QUESTION:

I inherited some gold coins last year, and after a while thinking about what to do with them, I decided to dispose them.
So my question is, can someone tell me a good site for selling gold coins online?

    • ANSWER:
We were selling gold coins and other gold jewelry a few month back.

At the end, we sold our gold at the website below and I'm really satisfied with the result.

  8. QUESTION:
What is the best way to go about selling gold?
I have some gold I would like to sell during this high time but have never done it and am worried about scams and sharks out there.

What method would give me the most money for my gold?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
If the gold is worth 10 grand or more it would be risky to walk in the street alone. (I would ask a gold jewelry store that don't rip off people much and tells them you know someone that want to sell gold you tell the person you think how much it's worth. After that bring someone alone with you for safety/witnesses, stay there so the buyer would not steal or ripoff you.

  13. QUESTION:
What is a good "margin" for buying and selling gold coins?
I bought American Eagle one ounce coins about 2 years ago for "margin".

I could probably sell them now for margin.

Is this fair price to buy and sell gold coins?

    They are not collector coins.

    • ANSWER:
Do you mean the difference between the buy and sell price.? If so it seems too wide.

  14. QUESTION:
When selling gold, why isn't white gold worth more htan yellow gold since it costs more when buying jewelry?
When buying jewelry, white gold is higher priced than yellow gold. So, why isn't it worth more when selling it to be melted down into other jewelry? Why do these places that buy gold only look at the karet count of the gold, and not if it is white or yellow gold?

    • ANSWER:
White gold is actually yellow gold covered in rhodium plating. So it is more expensive to buy because it has a few extra steps along the way. The rhodium gives it the white appeareance. When you sell it back, they are melting it down and separating the metals so they only want to know how much actual gold is in the jewelry (karatage) and they want to separate it from the alloy metals.

  15. QUESTION:
How much is gold selling for per ounce?
I'm going to sell my gold jewelry that I do not wear. I would like to find the rate that gold is selling for now.

    • ANSWER:
It is currently hovering between 70 and 60 per ounce for the pure gold.

You could send your old jewelery to www.kitco.com they have a buy back service and their margins are fairly low.

The scrap value for 10 ct gold would be about 0 per oz, less refining cost. 18 ct would be about 0 per oz.

It could be more beneficial to sell the jewelery intact on ebay, or to a jewellery buyer, you could realize a greater than scrap value.

If you think that the world economy is going to improve and the US$ is going to increase in value then it would be a time to sell gold.

But if you believe that the US$ is going down the drain then it would not be advisable to sell gold unless you had to.

But in all markets there are short term fluctuations that allow for a profit in either camp.

If you have a good need for the funds then go ahead and sell as you will have gained a considerable increase over the last year in the value.

      Good luck

  16. QUESTION:
How much can i get selling gold coins?
I have a bunch of the American Gold Eagle .25 ounce coins. How much money can i expect to gain per coin sold to a coin shop? or is there a better place to sell the gold coin to where i can get more money for it?

    • ANSWER:
A coin dealer will charge a 5% fee on average, so you can expect to sell your 1/4 ounce gold coins (if in like new condition) for about 0US right now. You might get 0US per coin on eBay, but don't forget those fees. I hope that helps.

  17. QUESTION:

Every advert is to sell your 'unwanted gold' i never saw all these adverts before whats going on best answer 10 points x

  18. QUESTION:
do you need to pay tax wen buying and selling gold coins?
I was told that the companies like Monex do not report when you buy/sell gold coins, but do report when you buy gold bullion. Is this legal and is this true?
To clarify, the point I'm making is that if you purchase coins you do not need to pay capital gains tax if there is a profit whereas on bars you do need to pay capital gains on profits. I was wondering if anyone can verify this.

    • ANSWER:
You only pay tax if you sell them for more than you paid.

  19. QUESTION:
Which gold selling site has the highest payout?
There are so many companies and sites out there where people can sell gold jewelry for cash. Has anyone had a good experience with one of these companies?

    • ANSWER:
I was recently hired to find out which gold selling site pays the most for gold, for a market research project on internet marketing and the power of the net. I mailed bent rings (all the same weight and gold content) to 9 different "sell you gold for cash" type sites. The results were pretty dramatic. The checks received varied from to 0. The three lowest paying sites were goldkit (), brokengold () and cash4gold (). The top site was http://www.USGoldRefining.com (0). I went to a pawn shop and found that they would pay 0.

  20. QUESTION:
How can I get the best yeild from selling old gold jewelry?
I have several pieces of mostly 14K gold that was given to me by a family member (for the purpose of selling). What is the best way to go about getting actual (or close to) value for these?

    • ANSWER:
You need to find out what the value of the pieces are from an appraiser if you want to keep the jewelry intact. If you want to separate the gold from the other metals that make up the jewelry, then you need to do some chemistry work. Gold will dissolve in either Aquia Regia, which is a combination of acids, from which the gold can be extracted in it's pure form. Gold can also be changed into Gold Chloride by dissolving it in a solution of water, calcium chloride, and some acid, such as sulfuric acid. The gold can then be selectively precipitated out of solution. It all depends on how you want to sell the jewelry, as is, for what somebody would pay for it, or as separate metal for the market value of the gold itself.

  21. QUESTION:
What should I know about selling a gold coin on eBay?
I have bought and sold many times on eBay, but what should I know about selling a gold piece worth 00? Is it enough to set a high starting bid, require PayPal, and supply big, sharp photographs of the coin? Is it worth the expense to have the coin professionally graded, sealed, and certified first? What ripoffs should I be aware of?

    • ANSWER:
Certified coins tend to bring more in the coin market, including eBay. There are two services I recommend: 1) PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and 2) NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation).

Good closeup photos that you can take with a digital camera are a must. Be sure to use the "macro" setting and no flash when you take the pics. Position your light source (a lamp is fine) off to the side somewhat of the coin.

Before you set your starting bid, see what coins like yours have sold for recently. Use the "Completed Listings" check box located on the left panel of the listings. Prices that show in green are for items that actually sold at those prices.

One more thing... Give some thought to your write-up. A gold coin is special. Learn something of the history behind these coins. Your twenty dollar gold piece, also known as a "double eagle", is much more interesting than a mere bullion coin. It doesn't hurt to romance the sale a bit! 22. QUESTION:
What do I need to know before I start selling scrap gold?
I want to start selling scrap gold, but I want to know who pays the most, and how safe it is.

    • ANSWER:
I found this blog that constantly updates with the current highest paying gold buyer. That is where I go to find today's highest buyer.

      Here is an excerpt:

"Selling scrap gold is a lot different than selling gold bars. Gold bars are the standard for gold trading today. Selling scrap gold is not quite the same though.

What is the different between selling scrap gold and selling gold bars?

Well, when you begin selling scrap gold, you will find that lots of people are willing to buy it. Why is that? Because they are wanting to pay you a very small amount to get your gold. They are profiting big time from this, when it is really you that should be profiting."

  23. QUESTION:
Since Obama's election, the talk show hosts like Beck and Handjob have been selling gold, playing on the fear?
of financial collapse, inflation and the collapse of the dollar, none of which have happened.

Does anyone see the connection between their constant fearmongering and gold companies for which they advertise?

See the connection yet? They sucker you with their rhetoric and then offer to sell you the cure for their contrived sales pitches.

They could have been selling glass marbles as well, or voodoo dolls.

In fact, the US Dollar has strengthened since Obama took office and inflation is non existent.

    • ANSWER:
It is interesting to me that you are not concerned about governments increasing spending. Do you have any idea how much we owe and who will pay for it?

It is easy for you to listen to soundbites and think you are informed, but it seems you are not. Wake up. These criminals have spent so much money on your behalf that that every man woman and child in this country owes about 0,000 each. You are not worried about that? Rather than asking uninformed questions, you should become informed. Has it ever occurred to you that people that lie to you may not have your best interest at heart? Hey I could be wrong, but what if I am not? But if there is a collapse, I want you to remember I will have food. If not...I will still have food.

Look at the bottom line of this chart and ask yourself where you are going to come up with your share of the debt, which by the way is growing. Your government doesn't want you to know how much you owe and are proping up a failing economy for as long as they can.

You think the dollar as strengthened. Well if I had 00 in gold or silver in 1963, it would be worth around 0,000 today. this is because your government has devalued the dollar. If you try to retire, the inflation will eat your savings and you will die poor. This is the cruelty of your government. If you are not concerned about the dollar as many ecomomists are...the same ones that warned about the housing collapse...then you are uninformed. You can cure that by learning the facts.

I am sick of those that play republican against democrat. It is childish at best. It is government against the people and many are to shallow to see it.

  44. QUESTION:
Does anyone know anything about selling gold to a pawnshop?
How much do you think I can get for a gold necklace? It's a nice size. Pure gold. I'm just curious. I've never done this before....

    • ANSWER:
Pawnshops and online gold buyers are in business to make money, and they offer very low prices to desperate sellers. Then again, sellers often have an unrealistic idea of the jewelry's value. I don't know how much you paid for the necklace, but it's safe to say the gold in it is only worth a fraction of what you paid.

If you really want to know how a buyer looks at your necklace, weigh it (in grams), look up the purity (it is almost certainly not 24K) and check the price of gold:

      http://www.kitco.com

If you know the price of an ounce of gold, divide it by 31.1 to find the approximate price of a gram of gold. If your gold is not 24K, multiply the gram price by the K number and then divide it by 24. Multiply that price by the weight of your necklace in grams. This price represents the value of the gold in your necklace. If you take it to a pawn shop, they will almost certainly offer you less,. but they will never off you more.

Of all the online gold buyers, as far as I know only GoldFellow posts the prices they are paying:

      http://www.GoldFellow.com

And you can always list it on E-bay and see what you can get for it.

  49. QUESTION:
Selling gold, where would give us the best price?
Does anyone have any insight as to where, and how, to get the most for selling my gold at? The wife and I have some we want to unload, and we'd like a decent price to pay down on a couple debts we have.
The wife says a pawn shop, but I think that a jewler or cashforgold.come type thing might give a better price.

    Advice?

    • ANSWER:
      The answer is...neither one.
If you check around, you will probably find that your local coin shop pays better than any of the places you mentioned. A pawn shop will pay perhaps 50% of the value of the gold (They are in business to loan you money, and what you are pawning is collateral for the loan. If you are selling,a pawn shop is not the place to do it.). Jewelers generally pay a little better, but most coin shops will pay 80 - 90% of the value of the gold. Selling by mail is always a terrible idea. Unless you have several ounces of gold, they pay the least of all, plus since you are not dealing in person, you don't have the option of asking questions.
