Selling Jewelry

With the correct preparation and marketing tools, you can sell your jewelry collection through home parties. And the best way to promote your home parties and your jewelry collection is through a quality the host and the attendee may get from home parties. Here are some tips to consider for successful jewelry home parties.

Top Five Tips for a Successful Jewelry Home Party

1. Choose unique, well-designed quality made printed brochures. A quality made, uniquely designed brochure is your first consideration in promoting and providing a summary of the benefits your host and her attendees will get from your home party. A uniquely designed brochure creates customer retention.

2. Brief your host. Discuss the benefits home parties bring for the attendees and the incentives and rewards your host may get. Provide brochures for distribution including invitations for the party. Visit her house three days before the event so you can discuss the physical arrangement and the profile of the attendees so, you know which of your jewelry collection you will bring. Ensure that your host calls her attendees a day before the event. You can offer help if needed so visitors would know the appointed time and place. This is the best time to encourage the attendees to attend and offer them a summary of what is in store for them during the party.

3. Arrive on time. You should be at the party at least two hours before the actual start to arrange the collection, last minute briefing with the host and receive guests. Ensure that there is a registration area with contact numbers, emails, or addresses for your client database.

4. Make your party fun and interesting. Make your party fun, lively and interesting by conducting games and promotions. You may choose to offer a gift for purchases totaling to a certain amount or have a counter with items for less than when bought today or a further discount for outright orders. There are many ways to make your party fun and interesting. Give them irresistible offers.

5. Network with friends and stay in touch. While attendees are busy checking on your collection, give out your brochures to those who do not have and your business cards to all visitors. Make sure that you were able to explain the benefits of the party to the attendees and to the host so they will be encouraged to host parties, too! Ensure that you follow through with the attendees after a week for buyers and another home party.

With the above tips, your party will surely be a blast! For quality made printing brochures, check out UPrinting.com. They sure are a reliable online printing company that offers readymade templates and customize designs.

How do I get the most money selling a few pieces of jewelry? Meaning, how can I avoid getting scammed?
I've already been told that the appraised value really means nothing when it comes to selling jewelry.

    • ANSWER:
The appraised value is what you would insure it for, and is usually more than the selling price.

If they're really valuable, try going through an auction house. They'll take a cut, but you'll get the highest price. Butterfields is good.

If not so valuable, check out auction sites to see what kind of prices similar pieces are getting.

  4. QUESTION:
How much do you make selling jewelry?
I'm considering getting a business license to sell jewelry, most likely online. I'm curious as to how much per month I'm looking at making. I would be making and selling the jewelry by myself. Watches, necklaces, earrings, keychains, etc. I know it depends on how much I actually make and sell per month, but I'm curious about what's realistic. Anyone have a similar business who'd be willing to share how much profit they turn? I'd appreciate the info to give me (and my hubby) and idea of how much I'll be bringing in. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It's totally depends on the materials you used to make the jewelry and also of course the design of the jewelry. The quality of the jewelry also can attract people to buy your jewelry.

  5. QUESTION:
What should I know before selling jewelry?
I am selling a diamond ring.
I have the receipt for it, specifying the weight, quality etc
I will also have, in hand, a copy of the current prices of gems and precious metals.
I am taking to a jewelry buyer.
Do you have any advice to offer?

    • ANSWER:
First I would check different potential buyer markets to get a comparison of prices offered. Some potential markets would be eBay, Craig's List, and diamond ring websites. Secondly I would search google for "how to sell a diamond ring". Lastly I would set a price that you are willing to take for the ring and stick to the price knowing the buyer will lowball you on an offer. Counter their offer by presenting your findings to the buyer. Take only cash with a NO return deal. If you do not know the buyer they might switch the stone and then ask to return it for refund.

  11. QUESTION:
How to not get ripped off selling jewelry?
My Grandmother recently passed and left me a bunch of her old jewelry, she said sell it because its worth a lot, but i don't know how much its worth, how to tell how much its worth or where to take it? And im low on cash so i couldn't pay for an appraiser.

    any help guys? much appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Take it to EVERY local jewelry store and ask them. Do NOT leave the jewelry there, even if you get a receipt. If they can't give you an estimate right then, leave and don't go back.

Take it to EVERY pawn shop and ask them. Do NOT leave the jewelry there for them to decide later if they want to purchase it, even if you get a receipt. If they can't give you an estimate right then, leave and don't go back.

Do NOT send it in to those "cash for gold" websites, they pay pennies on the dollar, if you are lucky.

If you decide to post it on craigslist, ebay or any other site, take lots of high-res pictures. Then be EXTREMELY cautious of buyers. Scammers love to steal jewelry from victims.

      A fake buyer will:
      1) call your jewelry "item" instead of using the word ring, bracelet, necklace
      2) demand you pull the ad
      3) offer to pay shipping
      4) will send a fake "paypal" email saying "kindly send the tracking number and we will release the funds"
      5) will demand you send the jewelry via trackable means (UPS, FedEx, post office)
      6) will insist you use some third party escrow service such as "yahoo buyers protection plan" or "ebay escrow service", neither of which exists like the scammer will want you to believe
      7) will say they are out of town or out of the country
      8) will say the purchase is a gift for a friend/relative
      9) will want you to ship it overseas (at your expense, of course)
      10) won't ask any questions about the condition, age, quality
Any one from the above list is HIGHLY suspicious, any more and you definitely have a scammer, no exceptions, ever, for any reason.

When you have responded to a scammer posing as a fake buyer, you are on his 'potential sucker' list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of being the perfect buyer, great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

  16. QUESTION:
I want to start selling the jewelry only thing is I am low on the funds?
I want to start selling the jewelry I make but I don't know where to start, any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
      3 ideas:

      1) do you have friends/acquaintances/coworkers who also create handmade items (pottery, fabric arts, other metal arts, glass arts, paper arts, photography, etc.)? if so, you plan an event where all of you show your work and invite everyone you know. you can have this event in someone's home and use email to get the word out. have a little food and drink and make it a fun event for people. be sure to have a mailing list so people can sign up to increase the number of people who come to your events. plan to have at least four events in the year. i have friends who have been doing this for a number of years and they've gotten so successful they now have a store.

      2) does your city/town have a "first friday" arts event? this is where the gallery district of your town hosts an event where all the galleries stay open late and serve food and drink. the idea is to bring people into the district for a party atmosphere. where i live there are a number of these events in different districts (and of course not all on friday, but that's the tradition in the arts world). many of the gallery owners will allow artists to set up tables on their front lawns for free to attract more customers. see if there's a place for you at such an event.

      3) know anyone who does "direct marketing" parties? you know, those events where people get together and learn all about and buy candles, or kitchenware, or lingerie, or vitamins. there are parties for clothing - you can find them in just about any city. find the ones in your city and attend them. get to know the host of the party and ask if you can bring your jewelry to their events to enhance the appeal of the event and to bring in more people (from your list of friends/acquaintances/coworkers). this technique is now quite common - various direct marketing sellers combine their products in one event. they get a whole lot more people (multiple mailing lists) and they get more interest because people may have already seen one of the offerings, but not the others.

  17. QUESTION:
What is a good website to start selling jewelry online?
My mother makes these beautiful necklaces and bracelets and such, and i was wondering if she can make a profit out of this. We have never sold anything online, and we want something easy. So, i ask, what websites are available to begin selling stuff?
I've also heard of etsy... is it any good?

    • ANSWER:
There are a couple of ways that she can do this. One is to find a website that provides information about the kind of jewelry that she makes and add a page of her own with her stuff; Another is to create a website and start marketing her stuff as a business of her own; Another is to start selling her stuff on some auction type sites and see if it sells or what sells best. To find out if there is a real market before making that kind of investment though she may want to start out selling locally at craft fairs and at some of the local boutiques. Then she can get a feel for what stuff sells best and how much to charge. Selling online will cost her an investment that she might avoid if she starts out locally first.

Since they're diamond, agree to meet up in a public place. Given a sour economy, you don't want strangers coming to your house to examine a 00+ fencing-price item. Never know... might get robbed.

  26. QUESTION:
How do I start approaching local stores about selling my jewelry to them?
A few months ago I started making jewelry as a hobby. Now I have a couple of potential jewelry parties lined up in the next few weeks, but I wanted to look into expanding my potential for income. In my situation, I'm not looking to make a living, but rather just make myself some extra spending money.

That said, for those who have successfully sold to local retailers (as opposed to online), how did you get started? Any advice and insight is appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
I suggest you approach privately owned shops. The chains stores have central buyers and do not have the built in system for other stocking methods.
Chose craft shops or boutiques where your jewellery could be sold as an accessory to stock already in store.
Be persistent. If phoning to make an appointment doesn't work. Just turn up with some of your stock so the sight of it is irresistable. Chose a quiet time on a Monday not a busy Saturday when the owner is busy with customers.

  27. QUESTION:
So I'm about to go into business in selling pearl jewelry online, any tips?
Selling Pearl Jewelry from China, cultured.
Any marketing tips in the jewelry world?
    Or, just plain marketing tips.
Also wondering where I could get some good
custom gift boxes and packaging done for the products.
    Thanks, t.

    • ANSWER:
Well first of all I can tell you based on myself trying to sell my pearls to jewelry brokers, pearls are not wanted by sellers anymore. They all have told me the same thing when I asked why they won't buy it: "We don't take pearls anymore because they are not in style. Customers don't shop for pearls anymore. It's now gold or real silver jewelry, stones or diamonds. You will be lucky if you find anyone to purchase your pearls." Truth is, I have not and no one will. Why don't you look around at your local jewelers and see what they are selling. You want to be in the now when it comes to selling product in this economy. You want to be in style or yes you will find yourself having a stock of jewelry that is not moving. Unless of course if this is just a hobby or part time thing you are doing aside from a full time job, then by all means go for it. However, have other items beside pearl jewelry so you do not get stuck wasting $$ being put into the business and not have purchases. Mix it up in your collection.
      Custom gift boxes:
google search custom jewelry boxes or gift boxes and tons of companies come up who do this:

here is one I found that is good for this stuff and they also provide packaging =) :
      http://www.800giftbox.com/

      Hope I helped

  33. QUESTION:
is making and selling jewelry a good idea?
my friend and I want to make jewelry to make some money on the side, would you buy good jewelry for a low price off the internet? it would be completely legitimate. and I think we could do it quite well.

    • ANSWER:
I'd recommend a site called Etsy.com that I use for the exact same purposes. Handmade jewelry is on the rise right now, so there are a LOT of people doing this, but it is a fun way to express yourself and make a little money. Etsy helps make it easy to expand your customer base beyond the local. Though I would recommend doing as much local as you can - it's always better to look at your customers eye-to-eye at something like a jewelry show, farmers market, or flea market - anywhere you can go set up and show off!

      Good luck!

  35. QUESTION:
How much can you make selling candles and jewelry at a flea market?
I was thinking of selling at the flea market on the weekends and selling on ebay also. probably girly stuff like candles, jewelry, maybe purses maybe hippie chick skirts what do you think? anyone with experience doing this themselves?

    • ANSWER:
Approach your friends who already have businesses that you will sell their products on consignment. When you sell at a flea market. You end up selling different collections of items. A few will be saleable so concentrate the volume on those. A few will never move off the table so of course, keep the inventory to zero.
Food seems to always sell but you need helpers.
TFlea market selling is an ongoing thing, so try your products on the first few times you rent a table.

  36. QUESTION:
How can I best go about selling a large amount of new fine jewelry, meant for a store that never opened?
I was left a large amount of jewelry and loose stones that was originally supposed to be the inventory for a new jewelry store. I'm overwhelmed by the amount and value of these items. Please don't say to go to eBay; it makes my head spin! The eBay 'sellers' take 30% or more and don't like to sell jewelry anyway. I'm responsible for handling this wisely but I don't feel very wise. There are diamond rings, bracelets, earrings, watches, etc. plus more gemstones than I can name in addition to the more common ones, like ruby, sapphire, emerald, etc. I know a lot of items are rare. I thought I should look for someone who wants to open a store but I don't know where to look or who to trust. Does anyone have experience in this area? Your advice will be welcome and very much appreciated. This has been stressing me so much for almost six months and now "the natives are getting restless." Please help! Thank You in advance...

    • ANSWER:
You might try finding someone looking to open a store as you suggest doing. They are not likely to pay what you think the value is as they will have to make a profit when they sell. If the items sell for what they are worth and were purchased at reasonable wholesale price, even giving 30% to an eBay seller should give you some profit. There are always pawn shops but they too are looking to make a profit and are usually shopped at by individuals looking for a good deal so again, you are not going to come out ahead of an eBay seller. You can always learn how to sell on eBay and market the items yourself. Hopefully you have the appropriate credentials to accuratly appraise the items or they have come with appraisals done by a qualified agency.

  39. QUESTION:
Selling jewelry in a beauty salon. How much mark up?
I have a small business making jewelry. I have gone into a salon in Indianapolis, and the purchase from me wholesale and triple the price and then complain that people aren't buying because of the prices. They want me to come down on my wholesale prices to 15.00 - 20.00 per piece so they can triple. Is this normal?

    • ANSWER:
If you make the jewelry, it's retail price should be 10 to 20 times the cost of your materials and labor.

If it costs you 0 to make, it then the retail should be at least ,000, or, even better ,000.

      Jewelry has artistic value.

This is how jewelry stores work. Jewelry is a luxury, not a necessity. This is how they can buy jewelry from manufacturers, and have 75% off sales 48 weeks out of the year.

If it costs you 0 to make it, and your retail price is ,000, then your retailer can buy it for 6.67 and triple the price like they want.

      At those figures:
Their profit margin will be 67%.
Your profit margin will be 85%.

You can have a 50% off sale and still make profit, so can they.

And, people won't treat your jewelry like it is cheap junk made in China.

FYI: I noticed that S**rs Jewelry, is selling stainless steel rings, for .99. Their cost is about .00 each. probably less, we are talking about stainless steel, not even silver or vermiel. .00 times 20 = 0.00.

PS: I might be interested in retailing your jewelry also. contact me at arc2051@hotmail.com.

  40. QUESTION:
I am starting a home business selling jewelry and am HORRIBLE at math. How do I compute sales tax on an item ?
For example an Item is 18.00$ and CA sales tax is 8.25% how do I do that using a calculator

    • ANSWER:
It is really just simple math - .00 x 8.25% = 1.485. That would give you a tax of .49. Any time the last (3rd) number in the cents column is 5 or over you go to the next number. Another words instead of charging the .48 cents the five at the end makes it .49 cents. So just take your total times your tax and round it up if last number over 5. If last number under five then keep it to the original first 2 in the cents column.

How could I start selling hand-made jewelry?
I like to make jewelry. Friendship bracelets, and from things i fond around the house, other old jewelry and beads and things from the craft store. Its good looking stuff and I want to sell it to make some spending money, but I dot know how to go about it. I am a 17 year old college freshman =)

    • ANSWER:
do not listen to those people. plain and simple. Find a few local established small businesses and let them sell it for you. give them a cut probably around 40% just mark it up and play on the hand made aspect. keep prices firm and have a good name very catchy. I would put it in beauty shops or very clean retail. maybe 3 close towns with 3-5 locations to sell. Be ready though it might blow up and you might need help when you are selling 20-30 pieceses a week.

  48. QUESTION:
How do I start selling my jewelry and buying supplies at wholesale?
Is there a difference between a wholesale license & resale license? I live in SF Bay Area in California, so how do I go about buying supllies at wholesale price and selling my stuff?

    • ANSWER:
You will need a resale license from the state and possibly a permit from your city depending on where you will be selling your jewelry. The resale license sets you up so that you can collect sales tax for the state when you sell your product.

There is a big gift and jewelry show in SF a couple of times a year- you should start there.

  49. QUESTION:
Im Thinking about selling the jewelry i make, what do I need to do to start my own business???
I make My own jewelry and I need to start selling some of it to support my expensive hobby :) I dont know how to go about getting stores to carry my stuff or how to run my "business". HELP!!

    • ANSWER:
You might want to sell the stuff on Ebay. Take a picture and post a price. You will not have to try to sell it to stores.

You could also try to put an ad in Craig list. Craig's list is free.

Also if all else fails put an ad in the local classified ads paper (Greensheet, Pennysaver, etc...). The ad may be less than per week depending on the number of words in your ad.

  50. QUESTION:
How would I go about selling my jewelry?
I know it seems simple enough, but I feel like I'm going to get ripped off no matter what I do. I have a white gold chain and pendant with diamonds in it which I paid 00 for. Basically what I'm looking for is some tips/advice on the best way to go about selling it, and getting fair value in return. There's nothing wrong with it, I just feel like I'm a little too old to be wearing a chain anymore.

    • ANSWER:
For something that valuable I would go see a jeweler. You could use ebay or trademe, but I would suggest that you go and get it valued with a certificate to authenticate its value. It may cost you a little but would more likely insure you get what its worth. At the end of the day, be prepared to not get what you paid for it.
