QUESTION:
How can I get the best yeild from selling old gold jewelry?
I have several pieces of mostly 14K gold that was given to me by a family member (for the purpose of selling). What is the best way to go about getting actual (or close to) value for these?-
ANSWER:
You need to find out what the value of the pieces are from an appraiser if you want to keep the jewelry intact. If you want to separate the gold from the other metals that make up the jewelry, then you need to do some chemistry work. Gold will dissolve in either Aquia Regia, which is a combination of acids, from which the gold can be extracted in it's pure form. Gold can also be changed into Gold Chloride by dissolving it in a solution of water, calcium chloride, and some acid, such as sulfuric acid. The gold can then be selectively precipitated out of solution. It all depends on how you want to sell the jewelry, as is, for what somebody would pay for it, or as separate metal for the market value of the gold itself.

QUESTION:
There are so many ads for selling your old gold jewlery? What is the price you can expect?-
ANSWER:
You can calculate the spot value of a piece with a scale and a calculator.First look up the spot price of 24k gold:
http://www.kitco.com/market/us_charts.html
As I write this it is about US/gram.
For each piece, inspect it carefully for a "K" mark. To prevent disappointment, check for signs that it is gold plated or gold filled, instead of solid gold. If it is not solid gold, this method does not work, stop here. If it is solid gold, weigh it in grams.
Multiply the weight in grams by the "K" rating of the piece, and then divide that number by 24.
Multiply the adjusted weight in grams by the spot price (currently US/gram)This is the value of the gold in the piece at current spot price.
You cannot necessarily expect to sell at spot price, although you may. Most of those places offer you less than spot value for your gold, they are in business to make money. Nobody is likely to offer you more than spot value.
You will probably get teh pest prices on a private sale.

QUESTION:
I heard the price of gold is up right now. How do I go about selling some old gold jewelry?-
ANSWER:
You can take it to a local jewelry shop advertising in the paper. You won't get as much as if you send it to a refinery.I've just sold scrap gold and silver to Midwest refineries and received a check for 00.00. They pay 94%of current market rate. Thus if one troy ounce of 24 karat gold is selling on market for 00 you would receive 0.I'm going to list some links below to help you figure if your getting the best value for what you sell.If you have gold coins you can sell them outright to kitco and they will lock in the price so you know exactly what your getting.Midwest pays you for what they refine on the day of refining. Some offers you see on TV are ripoffs so beware.Silver is market value minus 12%.Remember also the karat of the gold will dictate what you recieve.24 karat pays the most.10 and 14 karat are usually what chains and such are the most common..If you need help or more information e mail me. I'll be glad to help. .Remember too. If you sell locally the person your selling to has to make a profit. So you end up getting less for your jewelry.By sending it directley to a refinery you cut out the middle man.Like I said I use Midwest but you can do a google search and find more.I would not deal with anyone who will not tell you what percentages they will pay upfront.Kitco is a real site but very hard to get into sometimes because of buying frenzies. Just keep trying.http://www.classicgoldsmith.com-a.googlepages.com/karatgoldpercentages

ANSWER:
I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

QUESTION:
15 year old selling gold?
Alright, I have two questions: Alright, my dad and I were in the car and I asked him how much can I sell an ounce of gold for at a jewlery store with a sign outside that says "WE BUY GOLD". My dad said he didn't know how much they would buy it for but he said that because I'm 15 and im trying to sell gold, they will think I stole it and most likley call the cops. (I was at that jewlery store earlier that day wuth a friend and I asked her if she would buy gold from me, even though i didnt have any to sell that day. But now i do) So would I get questioned and have the polive called on me if i sell them a few gold necklaces and also, how much does an ounce of average gold sell for?-
ANSWER:
a pure ounce of gold is usually within the 850-950 range but you lose a premium when you sell it. try ebay or let your dad sell it

QUESTION:
I understand the price of gold is about 0/ounce. How do I go about selling some of my old gold jewelry?-
ANSWER:
Your best bet is to sell on sites like Ebay. Those places that have you mail it in will disappoint you. That 900 bucks is for bullion which is nearly pure. Jewelry is always an alloy, the lower the number, the lower the percentage of gold content. 24 karat is pure, 14 karat is only about 60% pure. The price is also in "troy" ounces which are 31 grams, not 28 grams.
So if you have 2 oz. of 14k to scrap you think 1800 bucks.
Really =1.8 ozt
14 k =1.09 ozt=981 bucks
They give 75%spot (generous)=735 bucks
If there are any gemstones, the weight is reduced and they keep the stones free.Quite a big difference wouldn't you say?
Ebay buyers regularly pay above the spot for a well-written ad.They are making a TON of money by scamming the public, I researched three different companies and they all had the SAME phone number.

QUESTION:
Selling my old gold jewelery -?
How much per ounce can I realistically get from a local reputible jeweler? Do they consider the carat of the gold, or just lump it all together?-
ANSWER:
I dunno what price you'll get for it, but a fair price would be 90%+ of the spot price (currently 915 per troy oz or something close to it, it's fluctuating rapidly). The carat will matter, higher carat is higher purity ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carat_(purity) ).you might want to look at midwest refineries ( http://www.a-buyer-for-your-scrap-gold-jewelry.com/ ), you'll get 94% of spot from them.

QUESTION:
How much per gram or ounce do gold buyers pay for old gold?
I know the price of gold is over 00.00 per ounce right now, but I'm wondering what jewelers and pawn brokers pay for your unwanted old gold. Has anyone sold their old gold and know exactly what they were paid per ounce or gram?-
ANSWER:
The quoted price of gold (,100 plus per ounce) is for pure gold (24 carats). Most reputed jewellers will pay you the current market price for the pure gold portion of the jewellery. However, since most jewellery in North America is made from lower quality gold (often 18 carats or less), you will get less than ,100/ounce. As for pawn brokers, they may pay whatever they can get away with. I would advise you to talk to more than one jeweller before selling your jewellery.

QUESTION:
If you sell old gold jewelry what do they do with the stones? Do they pay you only for the gold?
I live in the United States-
ANSWER:
When you sell gold jewelry you are paid by the weight of the gold at the going market rate for gold. For the most part, you will be paid very little or nothing for the stones, unless it is a diamond that is at least a .25 carat or above of good quality and then you will probably be offered 1/4 of what you paid for the diamond retail.

QUESTION:
where can i sell my old gold jewelry in Nashville,Tn?
i have some old jewelry to sale and don't know where to take it.-
ANSWER:
If you're selling off stuff you don't wear anymore, your best bet is to use an refiner that will take your gold. You can compare how much you can get between the two, but if you want to avoid the hassle of driving all over the place then the refiner is the best way to go. Here is a review of one of the better refiners that will take your gold jewelry.

QUESTION:
How do I go about selling old coins?
Of course I'd like to get the most money I can out of them. They are old silver and a couple old gold coins. Are there honest dealers or collectors that will pay a fair price? Is it best to value them by weight or by collectability? Thanks for any information.
Weight or collectability.....we'll check for collectables first then weight! But am wondering about how to find a dealer or collector. Thank you-
ANSWER:
Coin values are a combination of rarity, condition, and collector interest. Please EDIT your question to provide more info on your coins.Country, denomination, date, mint mark (if any, or if you do not know what to look for).
If a coin is common (large number minted) and heavily worn, it might only be worth gold or silver value. That is based on purity and weight, which is easily determined.
If a coin is rare, then it is worth selling to a coin dealer. If very rare, perhaps worth auctioning. You need to learn more before having any idea of the best way to sell.
For US coins, you can get a rough idea of how a collector would grade a coin from the site below.

QUESTION:
Where can I sell my old gold rings?
They are barely used and I want to get top dollar for them. I went to a family friend who owns a Hannoush Jewellers and he said that they usually take the ring(s), take the diamonds out, and melt the gold so he'll only give like 50$ or so tops for a 10 Karat ring. This doesn't sound right and I paid good money for these awhile back and don't want to lose money- I want to at least break even.. any ideas?-
ANSWER:
He's right. Jewelers have huge markups, you pay for that store full of shiny stuff every time you buy a ring.10K gold is worth .44/gram right now, I don't know much about diamonds. Jewelers would be the only ones that would buy unset diamonds, not much market for them on the street.

QUESTION:
Where can i sell my old gold/diamonds??
does anyone know where i can sell my old gold/diamonds for cash? preferably in brampton, ontario? if not, then missisauga or toronto as my last resort??-
ANSWER:
The Pawn shop! In all states they have one, if there isn't one in your state, that'd be weird. You can give them your gold/diamonds and they give you you're money and put it in their shop so other people can buy it! Also, you can give them anything else and they'll exchange it for money. For example, my local Pawn shop has everything from lawn mowers to TV sets to game systems! It's cool, but for most Pawn Shops, you have to be at least 18 to exchange your item for cash:P

QUESTION:
How much money can i actually get when I sell broken gold?
I have lots of unwanted & broken gold. And want to sell some old gold pieces. And I know that the places to sell gold is endless....And, know that gold is trading at an all time high, I think its over 0.00 an ounce. How much can I expect to get from a dealer if I have an ounce of gold? Should I take it to a pawn shop or an independent dealer? OR should I sell them online?? Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Never sell your gold to a pawn shop or jeweler. They are just going to turn around and sell what they bought from you to a precious metals refinery for more money than they paid you. I would recommend sending your gold straight to the source. Many precious metals refineries out there are buying gold directly from the public and paying way more than a pawn shop or jeweler. Shop around for refineries posting their prices for individuals. I would recommend looking at Metallix Direct Gold. The have their prices posted daily and offer free shipping and insurance.

QUESTION:
How much money do you actually get when you sell broken gold?
I want to sell some old gold pieces. The places to sell gold is endless....And, know that gold is trading at an all time high, I think its over 0.00 an ounce. How much can I expect to get from a dealer if I have an ounce of gold? Should I take it to a pawn shop or an independent dealer? Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Well It depends on whom you sell it to. If you sell it to a pawn shop or jewelry store, all they want to do with it is resell it to someone else. So if it is broken or chipped or dirty or messed up in some way then they wont give you as much for it cause there is a smaller chance of someone buying it from them. If it has a lot of gold in it you can sell it to a jewelry maker or a factory that sells gold and they will melt it down and give you money for whatever amount of actual gold is there, cause they can then make whatever they want out of it.

QUESTION:
Where's the best place to sell old gold jewlry?
I have random gold chains and ropes in my jewlry box. They have no sentimental value, and I could use the money for school to be honest. They have no papers or anything... so what's the best way to go around selling them? Do I need to pay and get them appraised, or can I just go somewhere where they'll tell me the value? (I have no idea about gold, so I want some knowledge first.) I don't want to pawn them... I hear they rip you off. I do not know the karats or anything. Right now it's in a jewlry box at my boyfriend's place. (I am moving between apartments, so he kept my valuables.) Help?
I've hear cash4gold places rip you off more than pawn shops, and Ebay is a good place to sell it...
Thanks for that... sorry missed the "e" key... I'm looking for real help, not a spelling lesson.
I've heard from other answers on here, and other forms. So many people sell their gold to places like cash 4 gold, only to find they got like half the price they shouls have. Some people never even get their gold back when they decide they don't like the price.-

QUESTION:
would you recommend using money4gold web site to sell your old gold?-
ANSWER:
The complaints are numerous.
Even Clark Howard in CNN had a segment on this borderline scam.
You send in your gold, get pennies for it, if you complain, you are stuck.
Clark said that you would be lucky to get 1/3 of what you should get.Take it 3 of your local pawn shops, or looking in the yello pages for jewly or gold buyers.
Get 3 estimates, and tell each shop what you are doing, so they know you are shopping around and give you the best price.Don't get taken every time - just about every TV commerical is a scam.

QUESTION:
Has anyone ever used American Gold & Silver Exchange to sell old gold jewelry?
I have several items from an ex boyfriend that should be worth something. I don't want the items any more and I know that if I take the pieces to a jewelry exchange store, I can get a good deal for them but the closest store is an hour drive without traffic. Has anyone used AGSE? This is listed on Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange website as an alternate to driving to the location but I'm afraid if I don't like what they offer me, I'm stuck with it. And I know I can list them on E-bay but I know I won't get what a jewelry dealer would give me so I will either drive to the location or use AGSE-
ANSWER:
I don't think the AGSE deals with that kind of stuff... they deal with gold bars, gold coins, you know... real significant amounts of gold trade. If you're selling scrap gold there's no better place then to sell it to a refiner. You can request a kit from http://www.goldintomoney.com
