      I weighed a small amount of gold in about a year ago along with some platinum.... I acquired this metal due to the work that I do and the equipment I took it off is now obsolete and the metals were used as electrodes in old instrumentation. The Jeweller that bought it off me was almost ecstatic and gave me a great price - more than twice as much as if I had sold it a year before. He told me that due to the credit crunch and the recession, organisations are looking to buy precious metals simply because the investment would always be a 'safe' bet and would always give a good return on buying it - as opposed to putting money into shares and banking. Even when the price of gold crashes, it soon picks up again. It's always going to be around and it seems it's always going to be needed. Many people believe that it was the worst thing that Brown ever did as Chancellor.       You should look to sell direct to gold refiners, not a middleman. They melt it down in a furnace, to purify it. Do an internet search to find a suitable company. I used to work for a company that did this. They bought pure, and sold scrap, to Johnson Matthey, or Engelhard.

    DOn't get me wrong though people I do agree with some of the things you are saying.....but what alot of people don't is that mark up for lets say Bahrain or UAE to the USA for gold and jewerly is 350 percent be the time we see it...and thus we base are value on that because most of us don't have the oppertunity to go to the source and but it.....se we pay what we think is fair.....But I would say the amount of gold I bought while overseas exceeded the 1 oz mark....and I paid aorund 0.00 for it.....gold was about 400.00 or higher per 1oz at the time I think.....my wife ring I paid $ 1068.00 dollars and a couple shell casing from some of the larger guns off my ship....So after my experience I can never ever believe that a better deal is not out there.....If worse comes to worst....after med school i will just have to fly out to the places I have mentiond and buy there before it gets here

      First, you can buy like a dealer in many ways. If you wish to advertise and buy coins directly from the public at dealer prices, feel free to do so. BUT, you then have advertising costs, so your true costs are higher, (something people don't think about). If you wish to buy in bulk, you can get dealer pricing. Go to a coin show and tell the dealers you are interested in buying 10 gold pieces, they will give you wholesale pricing. The only reason dealers get wholesale pricing from mints is that they agree to buy ,000 or ,000 worth of coins at a time. If you have the money, apply to the mint to become an authorized distributor. The true "value" a dealer adds is buying in bulk and redistributing in smaller quantities, and buying everything offered to him, two things most collectors aren't interested in doing.

      Now, I understand your point about the gold in the middle east and elsewhere. I actually have good friends in Thailand who own gold shops there, and are STUNNED that we in America pay so much for jewelry, and most don't even know how much gold is in our jewelry. In most countries, when you buy gold, you start with what the gold is worth, and then negotiate for the premium you will pay over that since it is in a ring, necklace, etc. When you sell, you sell for what the gold is worth. Simple as that. Don't ever be fooled, though, that you can buy the jewelry cheaper than what the gold is worth. Gold is international, and is always worth what the international price is. Be very careful of the middle east, as they can be sharks, and most forged gold jewelry and coins come from there.

      I believe the trend long term will be up. There are many reasons for this, the main one being inflation. I believe that the gold to the DOW ratio will be 1 for 1. Currently its just over 7 ounces of gold to 1 share of the DOW. This ratio has only happened 2 other times in US financial history. I believe that both the DOW will go lower and gold will rise until they are at par with each other. I think somewhere around 3000 to 4000. If you factor in inflation then golds peak in 1980 in today's dollars would be almost 00. In inflation adjusted terms gold is only 30% of where it was in 1980. It has a long way to go. Also there are many similarities between what occurred in Japan in their marks both real estate and stock markets that we are seeing in the US. Also the similarities in the banking system are too great to ignore. We seem to be following the Japan model of propping up zombie banks and companies. If we are in fact paralleling what happened in Japan then that would put the DOW around 2800 to the bottom. Japan had their stock market index at 39,000 and they bottomed out at 7,000. That about an 80% decline. If we follow the same percentage drop then the DOW would bottom out at 2800 to 3000. Gold would have to rise as people flock out of the stock market. Also the PHYSICAL supply of gold demanded by investors is being squeezed. There is no physical product available for the retail investor. The US Mint is basically shut off and has shut out the average working person from its gold and silver eagle program. The US gold market on the lower end is at 75 per coin. That market has had a 0 move in the price in less then a month. This is going to go on for a very long time. Paper gold may not have as large of a moove due to the supression but the PHYSICAL gold market will rise even further then it has and will continue to outpace paper gold and all other asset classes as it has done for the last 10 years.

      The US is in a major depression and some sort of hyperinflation is going to happen. Gold and silver will be the currency of last resort as Greenspan has called it. It is the protector of property rights and cant be debased like paper can. Therefore gold will coninue to rise as more and more people relearn history and why gold has value. People will demand it more and more. I just dont see paper continuing to be a store of value in this situation we are in.

    A few years back I bought a Gold ring for a now EX girlfriend, at a Jared store. I paid a little over 0 for the ring, and its 14k. When I got it,there was a diamond between two K's which stood for our first names. So now its a K, a hole, and another K.. I paid off the ring,but had to return the diamond because I didnt want to keep making payments for a ring i took back. I know Gold prices are high right now,and I want to get rid of it. I just dont want to be ripped off. Over a year ago I tried turning it in and they wanted to give me 30-50 bucks for it. This was back in 2007 or 2008 so I am guessing I would get more for it now since gold prices have sky rocketed. Let me know what a good estimate is.       I have Silver, but i tried Crystal one time. it's so much better!! they added a lot of things, that's why there's a separate manual game guide to it, than silver or gold. one different thing is that when you encounter a pokemon, it'll do the move, thing. like with a Magnemite (i think) the screws pop out and pop in.

      If you buy new from a shop you are probably going to get a 9ct chain weighing about 15- 20 grams. (Approx £10/gram upwards)

      The carat refers to the fineness of the gold. The hallamark also relates to this. For example: -

      A 9ct gold piece is actually 9 24ths gold. So, if you divide 9 by 24 you get 37.5. This means the gold is 37.5% pure gold (the rest is made up of alloys). The hallmark relates to this figure and the hallmark for 9ct is 375. Likewise 18ct is 75% pure and the hallmark is 750.

      As you get purer gold, the metal gets softer. This will have an effect on which type of chain you are buying. If you want a curb chain, then don't go for anything above 14ct as they are not hard wearing enough (and for this reason are rarely produced) and become damaged easily.

      Your best bet would be to buy 2nd hand for better value but you need to be sure that the gold is genuine. I have included a hallmark table with the signs to look for for genuine gold. Best bet is probably ebay, or I can put you in touch with a trader in Hatton Garden if you like.

      You mail in your gold and you get about 1/3 to 1/4th of the value you would get at any pawn shop or local jewelry buyer.

      Leave it for the dummies to mail in their gold and accept whatever offer they get - they will never know if they got a good price or not.
