Turn Your Old Gold Into Cash!

Where To Sell Gold Jewelry

When looking for where to sell gold jewelry, we are very fortunate to have several options these days. More and more of us are finding ourselves trying to make ends meet, or we may be looking for a little extra cash to put in our pockets. Having a little extra money is just not a luxury that very many of us have these days. Whatever your case may be, we all want to get the most money when trying to sell unwanted or broken gold jewelry. Now let's take a close look at your different options.

The Worst Places to Sell Your Gold Jewelry

When I use the term worst, I am speaking in relative terms here. These worst places to sell your gold that I am talking about are generally very reputable and very safe. They just have one major flaw.

Gold Parties

Gold parties are a choice that you will run across when you are finding out where to sell gold jewelry. You don't hear as much about them as you did about a year ago, but they are very real and are probably happening on a regular basis in your neighborhood without you even knowing about it. So what exactly is a gold party? Remember the Tupperware parties that your mom made you go to in the and 80's, yep that's the same business model here.

Except you leave with money for your gold instead of leaving with plastic kitchen ware. You go to someone's house with your unwanted gold. A representative evaluates your gold, makes you and offer, and you leave with a check if you are happy with the amount. The host family makes a percentage of the total amount paid out to everyone that shows up. The gold party representative sends the old and unwanted gold to a refinery and makes a nice profit also. Everybody wins and it's a fun time, right? Not so fast, the major flaw will surprise you.

Brick and Mortar Businesses

Brick and mortar businesses like pawn shops and jewelry stores are also popular choices when finding out where to sell gold jewelry. You take your unwanted gold into the pawn shop or jewelry store, your gold is evaluated and you are made an offer for you unwanted gold. This is a very real and safe process. These types of business are trustworthy and they make these types of transactions every day, but they too have a major flaw.

So What's the Major Flaw?

Gold parties, pawn shops and jewelry stores simply don't pay you the most money for your gold. Yep, it's as simple as that. Nobody is robbing or stealing from you. They just cannot offer you as much for your gold because they are only "middle-men". Now here comes the most important information that you will find in your search for where to sell jewelry.

The Best Place to Sell Your Gold

Online gold buyers are simply the best choice if you decide to sell your unwanted gold. They can offer the most cash for your gold so you can maximize your profits and put some cash back into your pocket, quickly and safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where should I sell my gold jewelry?
I hear that the best places to sell gold jewelry are brokerage firms or estate jewelry houses. Where should I sell my gold to get the best price? And what are any tips for negotiating the best price when I am selling? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
It all depends on what you have. If your jewelry is in nice shape and at least 14kt or 18kt gold, many estate jewelry buyers will express interest and pay a bit better.

If the jewelry is damaged, or common pieces you still see in chain stores, you might as well sell it for gold weight...and in that case watch the gold markets for a nice gold spike because gold is paid on closing price.

Also, look into some private jewelry stores. Sometimes they do consignment for a percentage and you could maximize your dollar out of that.

      Hope that helps...

  2. QUESTION:
Where do we sell gold Jewelry stores give you peanuts compared to what it's worth?
It travels along a long path till someone makes a lot of money. I would like to be at the end of the line where the money is made. Any suggestions !

    • ANSWER:
Consumer Reports has some good advice on selling gold:

"The Consumer Reports Money Adviser compared what one of the television companies offered for a gold band a couple of years ago with what a local jeweler and an on-line gold buyer would pay, the TV company paid a much lower price. Instead, take your gold to a reputable jeweler in your area for an appraisal. Note the carat of the metal, and ask the jeweler to tell you the weight in pennyweights or troy ounces. Use this online calculator to figure out the value based on the price of gold that day. Then quickly (because prices fluctuate) call several jewelry or coin stores and ask how much they pay for gold. Aim to get about 85 percent of what you calculated it’s worth. "

  8. QUESTION:
WHERE CAN I SELL MY UNWANTED GOLD JEWELRY WITHOUT THE MIDDLEGUY?
I have heard of alot of people going around and buying up old jewelry for prices that are less then current market value and taking it to a location that offers a little more for it. I live in the Bay Area and would like to find out where I can take my gold to sell without the middle man.

    Any suggestions???

    • ANSWER:
There are at least three options that are available to sell your gold jewelry.

      1. At a pawn shop - Yuck!
      2. At a jewelry store - Better
      3. Online to a Cash for Gold Buyer

I have researched and found more than 200+ online gold buyers and there are three top, honest companies that I send all of my family and friends to. The top three on GoldVox.com have at least an "A" rating with the BBB. That means they resolve every customers concern, and have had minimal to zero complaints.

Check out http://www.goldvox.com and read some of the customer reviews and BBB ratings for several companies. They all buy gold through the mail and the top buyers pay very close to market price. It sounds unsafe to even consider mailing your gold but a lot of people have had great success with the programs.

Good luck and I hope you find a good deal! Gold is paying great these days!

  9. QUESTION:
Where is the best place to sell broken gold jewelry?
I have a broken gold necklace and want to sell it. However, I have seen in many news stories that those gold buyers in the mall, and on TV, are scammers and only give you a fraction of the gold's actual worth. Who should I look to sell to? Jewelry store?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, do not go to one of the places that pay you a portion of what ever gold is selling for via the stock market. The "Cash for Gold" places will scam you for as little as 30% of what the true price of gold is that day.

Every city has one place in town that pays what ever the stock market (or very very close to what the stock market is that day) is at that day. So if you have an ounce of gold, and gold is at 1,100, they will give you 1,100. They then sell sell it to a guy who melts it down and makes it into rings, and triples the price and resales it at places like Kay Jewelers (huge scam btw).

So what you need to do is call around to each place in town that buys gold and ask them how much they pay. Usually the best one is just called "Gold and Silver" and is not a pawn shop. A pawn shop will give you about 40-60% on gold. Make some calls. And do not look on Craigslist for a private buyer, they pay about 80% of the true price--all they do is run to the gold shop and make 20% off what you just sold.

      Hope this helps.

  12. QUESTION:
I want to sell my gold jewelry, where is a reputable place to go.?
I recently had a milestone birthday and noticed that my sense of fashion must-haves is changing (for the good). It's not about what materialistic things you have, but more about life experiences. Bottom-line, I've grown out of the gold necklaces and a few gold rings and would like to get rid of it and help one of my daughters purchase a car to get back and forward to work. I would of course keep a few rings for the girls to inherit, but their style is different or they just don't care for it. So where do I go for a reputable and quality sell?

    • ANSWER:
First of all you'll have to find out if you have real gold? All pure Gold items have a Hall Mark on them somewhere.Take them to a Jeweller in your town. They can value the pieces. If by any chance they are not marked, then unless the piece is very old, they won't be worth much.

Dont go to pawn shops, they DO rip you off. Trust me i've seen my own family members get ripped off by them.

They've gotten me out of a lot of tight spots. They gave me money for a rusty gold watch of mine. All you have to do is order a free kit from them.

As for furniture, contact some of your local thrift stores and see if they'll buy it from you.

Where is the best place to sell gold jewelry for a good price in southern California? Los Angeles, area.?

    • ANSWER:
If you do not find something in your area, I can suggest a great online site. I am not familiar with the area you live in.
A great online site I know of is http://www.mycashforgold.info
My friend sold her gold to them, and she was thrilled with their service. She did a ton of research on different companies. She did a thorough check, and found that they are members of the BBB. They have also been featured on USA Today, and numerous networks. They have a great website with a lot of information if you would like to check it out.
I hope you make a lot of money!

  22. QUESTION:
Where can I go to sell my gold jewelry and watches?
I don't want to go to unreputable companies or pawn shops

    • ANSWER:
You will get more money if you can find a jeweler in your area that sells estate jewelry on consignment. However, if you need to sell your jewelry immediately I would also recommend jewelers who deal with estate jewelry as well. You would get less by outright selling your jewelry, but the offset is that you would get paid more quickly. Be sure to shop around as you may find some jewelers willing/able to pay more for your pieces. If you have appraisals for the jewelry, be sure to bring those as well, as jewelry with an established appraisal usually will bring more money.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use those companies on TV that have you send them your jewelry and send you a check in return. You will actually get a whole lot less from them than you would a pawn shop!

    • ANSWER:
I would strongly suggest checking out the Silver and Gold Exchange before selling gold or silver to ANYONE. I did a great deal of research, online and offline, and learned a lot about this business. I checked pawn shops, jewelers, "gold parties", hotel "buying events as well as the online buyers, including the "as seen on tv" guys. I found that the Silver and Gold Exchange paid more than anyone else I could find. I liked the fact that they post the prices they pay per gram (beware of the places that quote in pennyweight/DWT) on a live price chart at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com I also checked out their Better Business Bureau report and found they have never had a single complaint as opposed to HUNDREDS of complaints some other companies have! I recommend them 100%

I never wear gold jewelry but I have some expensive and nice gold chains, rings with diamond and other gems, and watches. Since I really only wear white gold or silver I want to make some cash from my jewelry. It is not broken, scratched or worn.

Where would be the best place to go to sell it? Online, local store, or other suggestions!
Also, is this a good time to sell gold?

Before selling your jewelry make sure that you do research on the company before you choose to go with them. There are a lot of scams out there and even more places that will rip you off. One of the most reputable and honest companies I have ever come across is Empire Gold Buyers and I would highly recommend that you check them out. I know many people, including myself, that have used them and I have always heard great things. Best of luck

  30. QUESTION:
Best way to sell gold jewelry?
I have a lot of gold jewelry, some of which is damaged but suspect that it is worth more melted down than in its current form. Where does one go to sell gold like this without being ripped off? If your advice is to use Cash4Gold, then please don't bother responding.

    • ANSWER:
You are never going to get market value for your gold. A lot of people forget that it is a business and there are expenses. About 2% of the gold immediately evaporates upon melting, market price may drop, rent, assay fees, permits, labor, taxes, etc etc. Also market prices are based on 1,000 ounces of bullion (bars, coins etc) on a trading level.

If you have one ounce of jewelry, and gold is ,000 a ounce you don't get ,000 for that jewelry. Most jewelry is 14k gold and that is only 58.5% pure gold.

      10k- 41.7% Gold
      14k- 58.5% Gold
      18k- 75% Gold
      22k- 91.7% Gold

I am a refiner and diamond buyer in Florida, and will give you the information you need to sell your items without getting ripped off.

Gold (Based on todays price of 3/oz)- 10k- gram, 14k- gram, 18k- gram.

      Silver- 925/Sterling- a ounce.

This is the absolute least you should get per gram. A lot of place buy it according to pennyweight (DWT) to convert grams to pennyweight just multiply the gram price by 1.55.

I pay around 6% more than the numbers I listed above for 100 grams of gold OR LESS, if you 100-200 grams I pay 10% more than the prices above, 200 grams or more 12% more than the prices above.

I buy from jewelers, dealers, pawn shops, and the public all over the country. If you know the approx weight and karat of the gold I will pay you PRIOR to you shipping your items using paypal. If you dont have a scale I send them to customers FREE OF CHARGE! If that sounds like something you would be interested in doing call me anytime. My number is tollfree. (877) 487-1386. Either way I hope you get a fair price no matter who you sell it too. Just Do YOUR RESEARCH!!!

A few last things. If you have any gold or silver coins or bars (bullion) you should get about 1%-2% below market value if they are pure gold (most are) since they do not need to be melted.

Also now is NOT the time to sell anything but gold, silver or platinum. If you have diamonds (larger than a 1/2ct), or a high end watch, KEEP THEM IT!! Wait until the economy rebounds a little. You would get half of what you would of got 6 months ago for them!!

      Hope this helped.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

  34. QUESTION:
where is the best place to sell gold jewelry? Im in chicago?

    • ANSWER:
If you're selling scrap gold and jewelry... like things you don't wear anymore, then your best bet is to sell it to an refiner online. You ship off your gold and they'll send you a check very quickly. http://www.goldintomoney.com has more information. Avoid pawn shops because they skim a bit off the top, and your gold ends up in the same place anyway

If it's a rare piece or antique, then you're better off shopping it around to a few jewelry stores.

My friend wanted to do the same thing.
She did a lot of research, and she found a great place online. I will provide the link for you below if you are interested.
She compared a lot of places. She felt good about this one because it was featured in USA Today, and she liked the fact that they are members of the BBB.

    • ANSWER:
Pawn shops or places where they sell old jewelry, but they may have to melt them down no matter how precious yours are. Others will sell them as is, if they're in tip top shape and are antique.

Ex: 0 you will be lucky to get cash. Don't send them out by mail, you'll never see your cash money.

Also put an ad on craigslist, but have someone WITH YOU go meet them in a restaurant or someplace public, for collectors, you could get lucky!

Where and how can I sell my old jewelry?
I'm going to uni in 2012 (hopefully)and I need some money for it as I live in England and I want to go to America. I have decided to sell my jewelry and some are worth at least £1000. Where can I sell my jewelry? I have gold, platinum and diamond stuff. Could I go to a local jewelry shop? I'm not sure how much my stuff are worth.

    • ANSWER:
The jewlery shop. That's where is sell mine, anyway.
They will tell you is is worth anything and how much are they willing to give for it. Don't be lazy and go to several shops and then sell it to the one that will give you the most. (: Some shops don't buy old jewlery but there are ones that do so just rome around the town.

If that doesn't go well, you allways have internet.

    • ANSWER:
You should try shopping around to local jewelers first. If that doesn't work you can use an online gold buyer that pays very competitive prices, like this one: http://www.goldintomoney.com/company-reviews/business-is-booming-for-gold-buyers-like-cash4gold
