where can I sell my silver coins?
I have a bunch of non-collectible silver coins and I want to sell them but not to one of the places like cash4gold. How do you find a reputable company to sell silver to?

    • ANSWER:
While all the answers so far are good (with the possible exception of Steve Erkel, hopefully), you should definitely make a trip to all of them and see who is giving the best price. Also look for people who make custom jewelry. They may give a slightly higher price than someone who is going to buy it and sell it for a profit to someone else who is hoping to make a profit. Remember that most coins are not the 99.99% silver ones, and the extra non-silver component is not generally paid for.

If you can melt them and make silver bullets, maybe there is a market for that... ;)

    • ANSWER:
I would try the Silver and Gold Exchange. They are one of those mail-in buyers of gold and silver, but they will sell silver and gold bullion, coins, etc. They do not advertise this fact, I guess because the demand would probably outstrip supply if they did. I know they sell below retail because I buy from them from time to time. I have never found a better price anywhere else. You'll have to find their number on their website. http://SIlverAndGoldExchange.com

  13. QUESTION:
Would it be worth it to sell my silver coins to a place where a convention is at that buys gold & silver or?
would it be better to just keep the coins ?

    • ANSWER:
If the place you're looking at is anything like the ones I've seen advertised locally, I certainly wouldn't sell it there. One of the ads shows that they pay " and up" for US silver dollars minted before 1936. The problem is that at the current silver price, there is about worth of silver in them.

If you really want to sell, and what you've got is coins and bars, I'd go to the nearest coin dealer and see what you'd get for them

Best way to sell bulk silver coins? I would, of course, rather get the price per ounce for it.Anybody?
I also have commemorative 1/4 pound silver coins. Where could I see these?

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

  21. QUESTION:
I have some silver coins that dont have intrinsic value....where is the best place to sell coins/bullion?
    I live in Indiana.....

    • ANSWER:
Actually all these coins have ONLY intrinsic value, which is the value when you sell them as scrap silver coins or bullion coins, rather than as numismatic coins. Your best bet is a local coin dealer, but if he offers you substantially less than the current silver spot price, then I would try eBay. Here are some current auctions and offers:

  23. QUESTION:
Where is the best place to sell gold and silver coins?

    • ANSWER:
You could try your local coin shop. Stay away from pawn shops. You need to get a 2007 Red Book so you can have some ideas of the coins values. You could also try to sell a few coins on Ebay to see how it goes. You should really think about why you are trying to sell right now considering the way the market is. If you hold on a little longer, maybe by next summer, your gold and silver will be much more valuable, possibly two or three times more.

  24. QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell some silver coins, getting the most for my money?
I have alot of dimes and silver quarters..Where is best place to get highest price for them as I know silver is at a high now.Do I have to go to a dealer or is there any place I can go direct to cash

    • ANSWER:
you could go to a dealer, but s/he would buy them likely at a steep discount.

otherwise, you could just as well sell to a private person and you could probably agree to the current silver price.

if you were located in NYC, where i live, i'd offer to buy them from you myself, as i am always in the market (disclaimer: i am not a dealer, just a buyer able and willing to pay current spot prices.).

PS - you could look into ebay.

  25. QUESTION:
Where to sell collectible golden coins?
I am looking for a reliable place where to offer my grand dads coins. Most of them are European, gold or silver coins. I do not know the current value, but I know that they were not cheap to buy a few decades ago already.

    Anybody with suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Most coin dealers would not give you their true value (especially the silver). Please search this link for coin dealers specializing in world coins and/or world gold, and you should get more than one opinion. I hope that helps.

  26. QUESTION:
Where can you SELL silver at actual spot price? Coin dealers will sell but when the price goes up (say 4xs) ?
coin dealers are willing to sell you Silver Eagles at when spot is but if spot goes to 0 where are you going to sell them? i overheard the coin dealer offering to buy a Eagle at when spot was . So ok they make a profit - but if it goes way up and I want to sell several thousand dollars worth why should they buy it? I mean I am a store owner, I sell a product, I would just sit out the highs...I mean why would i buy your silver coin at spot and tie up my money (say ,000 +) to wait to sell it just to make or so dollars per sale - I mean geez how long would that take? Would I really want to tie up my money like that? I don't know - I'm new at this - I don't get what I am going to do with silver eagles when I feel it time to exit the market?

    • ANSWER:
Large dealers are brokers. They turn a profit by trading, just like a stockbroker. They will buy at spot less commission to have inventory to sell at spot plus commission. No inventory, no commission. ALWAYS take possession yourself of your coins and use your own vault, safe deposit box, etc. Years ago a bullion broker charged to store the gold for people and sold it in a ponzi type scheme. People lost everything.

  27. QUESTION:
If it is illegal to melt old silver coins, why would anyone buy them for silver value rather then their old.?
I know it is illegal to melt American currency, so why would anyone buy silver coins for their weight rather then their worth, such as a 1921 silver dollar? It is worth more in silver then it's age. And could anyone tell me where I could sell silver coins for their weight? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
It is not illegal to melt US silver coins. It's done all the time. In fact, it wasn't illegal to melt any US coin until the December, 2006 legislation that made it illegal to melt, or export out of the US, cents and nickels. This was being done because the value of the metal exceeded that face value of the coin, and because they are both still in circulation, the US government feared that if too many were to disappear to melting, it would cost them a ton of money to replace them. This isn't an issue with silver coins, which continued to circulate for a few years after they were no longer minted.

  28. QUESTION:
Where do junk silver coins come from?
Where do the junk silver coins that can be bought from shops or online come from? How do they find bags of them to sell?

    • ANSWER:
Junk silver coins are just well worn specimens. They came from the mint like all other US coins but they have been well used by people and have little or no collector value. The mint made millions of these coins each year up to 1964. Then when they quit making 90% silver coinage in 1965 people started hoarding the older pieces. As time goes by people started gathering a small bunch here and a small bunch there ... now you have bags you can sell.

  29. QUESTION:
how do i sell silver coins?
a few days ago, i was trolling around my bedroom and found an old box. inside were 15 or 20 mercury dimes and some older assorted coins. I asked my dad what they were, and he went through and told me that the brunt, besides some worn-out buffalo nickles, were partially made with silver. I immediately went on the internet and found out how to tell, which lead me to have quite a little collection.

My father told me I could hold onto them, sell them, put them back, whatever I wanted. Now, I know there are shops that sell collectible coins, and since researching, I know of the grading system they use to say how 'mint' the coin is. The college student in me would like to sell them. Anyone out there know where I could possibly get the best deal or how I would go about selling them? The only thing I wouldn't be willing to do is go to a convention. I'd wanna move them ASAP, selling for their 'melt' value (that's what i'm guessing it's called)
In the end, i don't care if i'm turning a profit of or , I just want to know how to sell them. If you need amounts, i can send them. I Currently have the coins in plastic sleeves here for safe keeping
In the end, i don't care if i'm turning a profit of or , I just want to know how to sell them. If you need amounts, i can send them. I Currently have the coins in plastic sleeves here for safe keeping

    • ANSWER:
Easiest thing is to find a local coin dealer, and ask what they're paying for "junk" silver. They'll probably tell you something like "22 times face value". Then, all you have to do is figure the face value of the silver, multiply by (in this case) 22, and you know how much you'll get for the silver. However, if you have some better priced coins, you'll want to sell those separately from the junk silver.

The Buffs and any non silver are a little harder to figure, because their value is going to depend on the year, the condition, and where they were minted. As a rule with the Buffaloes, if the date is worn off (a common problem) a dealer will probably give you $.15 to $.20 each for them.

Really, the easiest way is to sell them to a dealer. No fees, and no waiting for your money. Walk in with coins, walk out with cash.

  32. QUESTION:
Silver coins and collecting, is it time to sell? Or do you think silver might go back up?
When I sell silver coins, should I get more money for proof sets than just melt value? Silver dropped today?

I have; which isn't much, but I'm very young and a novice

    4 uncirculated pre-1964 Quarters ( 1959-P , 1961-D , 1962-D , 1964-D )

1 circulated 1951 No Mint Mark? Where is it from?

1 circulated Mercury Dime (Cant find a mint mark, I thought mint mark was on the obverse)

1 1964 Unopened Silver Proof Mint Set that has never been open (Still in the original envelope from the United States Treasury Department from Philadelphia. Still sealed in original envelope

1 1963 Silver Proof Coin Set - The envelope from the treasury department has been opened, but all coins are still in the plastic seal and has Certificate from the Philadelphia Mint.

I know that what I have isn't a lot, But the dealer wants to give me melt value for everything. I thought at the very least I should get alittle more money for the proof sets. Especially the 1964 because it has never been opened from it's envelope. I thought that would increase the value. I know the chances are rare but there could be a cameo, or some kind of error in that set making it more valuable.

I'm new at this, but I love it. I love looking through coins. Silver dropped today, is it time to sell?
I'm young and I think I found a new hobby, I enjoy it so much.

Like I said above, should I sell everything for only melt value? That doesn't seem right to me

any suggestions or advice for this novice collector would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoy all this and the more I know the better. I thought when inflation went up, silver and gold goes up, am I wrong?

Sorry, but one more question...Does anyone know any good books to read about coins and collecting?

    • ANSWER:
The four quarters, unless they are _extremely_ nice uncirculated examples, are probably going to sell for melt. There were just too many of them made and saved in nice condition for them to have much of a premium.

Same situation with the 1951. No mintmark would mean it was made in Philadelphia, but the mintmark wasn't in the same place as it is now. Back then, it was on the reverse, between the bottom of the wreath and where it says "Quarter Dollar".

The dime could be worth melt, or it could be worth a lot of money. Without knowing the year and the condition, it's impossible to say. The mintmark on Mercs was also on the reverse, to the right of the word "ONE". Again, no mintmark means Philadelphia.

The '63 and '64 proof sets are also not worth a huge premium, unless there is something special about the coins. If any of the coins are cameos, of course those are worth more, depending on how strong the effect is. Also, in 1964, some of the early Kennedy half-dollar proofs are a variety called "accented hair"--there was more detail in Kennedy's hair than on proofs made later. Those have a premium, but not a large one.

I've never been a big fan of the unopened envelope proof set craze. First, it is possible to steam open and reseal the envelopes, and it's even possible to buy reproduction envelopes, and seal the coins in them, which means it's possible that it's not actually an "unopened" set at all. The coins are protected in the plastic, so it's not like they'll tarnish if the envelope is opened. Second, I really like to see what I'm buying, so I'd rather look at them and see whether they're gorgeous coins, or dogs.

A good book to start with would be the Red Book--or it's official name "A Guide Book of United States Coins". You'll be able to go to any coin dealer and ask for a Red Book, and they'll know what you mean. You can also find it on Amazon.

any suggestions or advice for this novice collector would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoy all this and the more I know the better.

Sorry, but one more question...Does anyone know any good books to read about coins and collecting?

    • ANSWER:
The 4 uncirculated quarters are worth a little more than melt if they are truly uncirculated. The mint mark on the winged liberty (mercury) dime is on the reverse below the E in ONE. The proof sets are selling for around .95 each. Being sealed does not increase the value of proof sets most of the time. Silver dropping is not uncommon and is not much. The so-called experts expect silver and gold to go up even more next year. If you don't need the money hold onto your coins. Right now proof sets are down in value and that too may turn around when the economy starts to get better. As for books get a Red Book A Guide Book of US Coins. The book has important info such as where mint marks are, a guide to grading each series, lots of history and of course a retail price guide that is to be taken as a guide only. Monthly price guides are more up to date on values. Most series of coins have books on them. In the end books can cost more than coins. I have collected for a log time and have a lot of interests so have shelves of books on coins, medals and tokens of the US and the world. I allow email through Yahoo answers and would be glad to help you if you like. I always recommend going to more than one coin dealer when selling or even buying. Hope this helps

  34. QUESTION:
does every bank sell gold/silver coins?
i was thinking of buying some gold or silver coins or just gold/silver period to have for a investment, how much do gold or silver coins cost? and where can i get them? banks? coin shops? and is it true they go up in value?

    • ANSWER:
In some countries, the current bullion coins are sometimes available at banks or post offices, but the US isn't one of those countries.

Probably your best bet would be a coin shop. If you're looking toward just having some precious metal, and don't care about any numismatic value, you're going to want to look at "bullion" coins. The price is going to vary based on the "spot" price for gold and silver. Right now, that's 67 and .55 per troy ounce.

If the value of gold and silver go up, then the value of the coins goes up. If it goes down, then so does the value of the coins.

  35. QUESTION:
New Silver Coins: I need information about where to buy them?
I am interested in collecting NEW silver coins (latest dates, ie. 2006, 2007, 2008) that are issued by the US government. Can anyone of you suggest a online site or any place around Philadelphia where i can buy new silver coins without paying too much above the listed price for silver? I heard some sites and shops sell for a hefty commission (profit) but I dont want to pay too much above the listed price of silver for that day.
    I would appreciate your responses.
    thank you.

(US) If the collapse never happens, which I pray it doesn't, I wound just pass them on to my children. Can anyone recommend a reputable seller of these coins? And also one that will sell me the amount I want to buy and not the amount they want to sell?
    Thanks!

I've been trading silver through Apmex for several years. They give the current quote and mark it up a little. And they deliver right to your front door.

      http://apmex.com/

I gave away 5 oz bars/coins of silver at Christmas two years ago to family members, and last Christmas they were almost double the price. The gift that keeps on giving.

You instinctively already know that holding a paper ETF is not the same as holding physical gold. Until the Flash Crash a couple of weeks ago, nobody realized that ETF's could freeze up and lock you out of trading or redeeming the underlying. If one of the reasons you're buying gold is to protect against a crash in the system, then that very reason may be why you're left holding the bag (paper ETF instead of physical gold) in the event of a crash.

Read this article how GLD/SLV ETF's may not be redeemable:

  37. QUESTION:
If I have a bunch of coins that arent mint, but have silver and nickel content where can I take them to sell?
and get an honest price? I dont want to go through the effort of pricing each for it's precious metal content. Where can I go?

    • ANSWER:
If you just want to dump them see a couple of coin dealers, they at least will be able to spot a scarce date if you have any. It is always wise to do some leg work yourself to get the best deal. Nickel is not rare anyway and dealers will not buy it for the metal due to new laws that are in effect. You should get a price guide and go over it to see if you do have any rare coins. lazy or unprepared people lose in the end.

  40. QUESTION:
where to sell valued coins and how much are they worth?
I have inharrited some coins recently and the ones that I dont have centimental value to me i want to sell. I have a mint set of 5 John F Kennedy Collection coins in original mint box with JFK picture on front and back has the story of how much silver is in each coin. The coins date from 1964-1965. Never touched by anyone since they are still in original casing. I also have a 1820-1920 Main Centennial coin in cerculated condition, an 1877 Trade Coin. I have others im not sure of what the value is, but they have more centimental value, so i dont think i should sell those. Does anyone happen to know values and where to sell them if they have value?

    • ANSWER:
Your descriptions are not very specific.

The Kennedy Half Dollars are likely worth less than US apiece.

If you mean an 1877 Trade Dollar, a genuine coin could be worth very much though there are numerous counterfeits out there. It might also have a mint mark (plain, Philadelphia; CC, Carson City; S, San Francisco).

A 1920 Commemorative Maine Centennial Half Dollar had a limited mintage and very few of these were well struck, so you might have another valuable coin.

I strongly recommend you search for at least two coin dealers for a comparison of opinions, so you might find out exactly what you have. Please check the links below. I hope that helps.

  41. QUESTION:
where is the safest place to sell precious metal (gold, silver, ect.)?
i am looking to sell my gold and silver coins and was wondering what is a safe company that will actually give me a descent price on them without trying to rip me off. any ideas? please list the websites so that i can visit them. thanks!!!!

    • ANSWER:
With silver near -/oz right now, you can get the highest prices on eBay. I sold my many kilos of silver eagles on eBay when it was around /oz, and I was actually getting about -/oz (depending upon the coin and distinguishing features)...and I was one of the top 5 cheapest sellers on eBay! Many people were charging almost -/oz even then! So now, you can probably rake in a big spread. The only downside to eBay is that it takes some time (especially when you're new with no business rep) and eBay double dips in your money with their fees...they charge you for using eBay AND PayPal, which really sucks...but you still make more money.

But if you want to sell all of your stuff right away at market price, you need to go to a reputable coin dealer. Avoid those new "We Buy Gold!" stores on the street corner in the hood -- they are generally rip-offs who prey on ignorant people and people with stolen jewelry and coins. For instance, there is a new one in my area, and what they're doing is pathetic. They are buying people's 1oz silver coins for , and then charging an 8% fee! So they're basically taking dumb people's coins for far less than half of what they're worth, then selling them to idiots with money for almost double what they're worth. Their gold prices are also pathetic. They offered me (when I visited to check them out) a measly for my coins which are worth over 5 just by their weight in gold -- I can sell them on eBay for over 0-200 due to their gold value and rarity. I laughed at them. They're making a killing from robbing people though -- they were speechless when I was in there talking about things like bid/ask spread, "[...] there's 31.1g per troy oz...", "[...] your competitors buy at spot...", etc. I know why though. I'm not trying to be offensive, but their typical client is an uneducated/unemployed black person who hasn't got a clue about precious metals, supplemented by ignorant, lower-class whites and the occasional junkie. They're basically making a living by preying upon the lower-class who have a little bit of metal, need money and have no idea what their stuff is worth. So be VERY skeptical of these little fly-by-night "dealers" on the street corner. It's ok to go check them out (you can't judge a book by its cover, and they may be a great place to sell), but you should REFUSE to part with your metals for anything significantly less than the market price (spot). If the spot price is .50/oz, and they offer you or , that's understandable...just check with other places and choose the highest bidder. But if they offer you something less, like , or God forbid, .50, you just laugh and walk away. Don't listen if they say that's the best you can get and all dealers charge that much...it's a total lie. You could mail your stuff to Northwest Territorial Mint and get at least a dollar or two under spot. So you've been forewarned! Don't let some stupid pawn shop or ripoff dealer rob you blind.

When I need to sell silver in bulk, I visit a nearby coin shop which has been around over 15 years. He actually pays me up 50-cents ABOVE spot price. There is surely a good place like this somewhere within your driving distance. You just have to shop around. But NEVER EVER accept much less than spot, and don't accept anything less unless you've exhausted all options and are desperate. If time is on your side, go to eBay and charge a little premium for individual coins -- collectors will eat them up fast!

  42. QUESTION:
where can i buy silver coins?
im thinking of investing in silver and i want to get coins, do the banks sell them

    • ANSWER:

  43. QUESTION:
How do you know when you are buying gold or silver coins bars or nuggets that what you are buying is real tthe
And when you do buy gold or silver where do you go to sell it .They say if you buy gold bars the goverment can take them from you at the going rate at the time of confication. Is this true. And do you have to pay taxes on gold.

    • ANSWER:
You only buy from a reputable dealer. I buy my S African Kruggerands (1 oz gold) & silver bars from a local coin dealer. Buy from someone who is a known: U.S. Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, S African Kruggerands. My silver bars are from Handy & Harmons. They have serial numbers stamped into them.

As far as I know, there is no national database of those that own gold. So how is the government going to confiscate these (gold & silver) if they don't know about them??

You want to sell your gold & silver, just go back to the same person/dealer that you bought them from. I suspect you do pay taxes on any profits (of the sale).

  44. QUESTION:
Where can I sell about 50 Morgan silver dollars in Northern California?
I am pretty sure there is no numismatic value and their value is in the silver content. I am guessing they are in pretty average condition from 1880's to 1900. No Carson City mint coins. I'd like to know what the spread is between buying and selling in this market.
I would like to find a reputable dealer within driving distance of the east bay but, may do a couple hundred miles for a good price.

  45. QUESTION:
Where do I sell my silver bars?
I want to get the most amount of money and the coin/jewlery dealers are trying to give me a lot less than the market price. How do I get the market price for my silver?

    • ANSWER:
Coin dealers are not paying a reasonable price? The ones around here (San Diego) pay about 90% of spot price. Since they usually sell for .00 or so over spot, that isn't that much of a profit margin. I don't think you will do much better unless you are selling to a private party.

    many thanks!
vergina; well if see your coin on electa you can get an approximate value of what its worth. you can also check ebay to see what theyre going for. if all else fails, weigh them (assuming theyre 24K gold)...at 00 an ounce (31.1 grams), you'll know what AT LEAST the gold in them is worth.

    • ANSWER:
Coins apart from their face value have an added value depending on the number cut, on the theme they represent and their availability.
Euro coins are easy to find in different collectors offers. The same applies for Drachma coins.

However, there were very few coins minted in silver and almost none in gold. At least of the modern coins. And those are commemorative. So their numbers are limited.

Ancient coins are illegal to trade in any form.

In e-Bay there are some for sale but I wonder how original and not fake they may be.
